Spatial optical mode demultiplexing as a practical tool for optimal transverse distance estimation

We present the experimental implementation of simultaneous spatial multimode demultiplexing as a distance measurement tool. We first show a simple and intuitive derivation of the Fisher information in the presence of Poissonian noise. We then estimate the distance between two incoherent beams in both directions of the transverse plane, and find a perfect accordance with theoretical prediction, given a proper calibration of the demultiplexer. We find that, even though sensitivity is limited by the cross-talks between channels, we can perform measurements in 2 dimensions much beyond Rayleigh limit with a large dynamic.

Efficient and mode selective spatial mode multiplexer based on Multi-Plane Light Conversion

We designed and built a new type of spatial mode multiplexer, based on Multi-Plane Light Conversion (MPLC), with very low intrinsic loss and high mode selectivity. In this first demonstration we show that a typical 3-mode multiplexer achieves a mode selectivity better than -23 dB and a total insertion efficiency of -4.1 dB (optical coating improvements could increase efficiency to -2.4 dB), across the full C-band. Moreover this multiplexer is able to perform any mode conversion, and we demonstrate its performance for the first 6 eigenmodes of a few-mode fiber: LP$_{01}$, LP$_{11\mathrm{a}}$, LP$_{11\mathrm{b}}$, LP$_{02}$, LP$_{21\mathrm{a}}$ and LP$_{21\mathrm{b}}$.

Pulse shaping with birefringent crystals: a tool for quantum metrology

A method for time differentiation based on a Babinet-Soleil-Bravais compensator is introduced. The complex transfer function of the device is measured using polarization spectral interferometry. Time differentiation of both the pulse field and pulse envelope are demonstrated over a spectral width of about 100 THz with a measured overlap with the objective mode greater than 99.8%. This pulse shaping technique is shown to be perfectly suited to time metrology at the quantum limit.
