Decoupled interband pairing in a bilayer iron-based superconductor evidenced by ultrahigh-resolution ARPES

We present direct experimental evidence of a weakly coupled multiband superconducting state in the bilayer iron-based superconductor ACa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ (A = K, Cs) via ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Remarkably, the K-containing compound exhibits two distinct transition temperatures, corresponding to two separate sets of bilayer-split bands, as evidenced by temperature-dependent superconducting gap and spectral weight near the Fermi energy, while its Cs counterpart displays conventional single transition behavior. These experimental observations are well described by the weakly coupled two-band model of Eilenberger theory, which identifies suppressed interband pairing interactions between the bilayer-split bands as the key mechanism. By exploring quantum phenomena in the weak-coupling limit within a multiband system, our findings pave the way for engineering exotic superconductivity via band-selective pairing control.

Observation of spin-valley locked nodal lines in a quasi-2D altermagnet

The interplay among quantum degrees of freedom-spin, orbital and momentum-has emerged as a fertile ground for realizing magnetic quantum states with transformative potential for electronic and spintronic technologies. Prominent examples include ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals and antiferromagnetic axion insulators. Recently, altermagnets(AMs) have been identified as a distinct spin-splitting class of collinear antiferromagnets(AFMs), characterized by crystal symmetry that connects magnetic sublattices in real space and enforces C-paired spin-momentum locking in reciprocal space. These materials combine the advantages of nonrelativistic spin-polarization akin to FMs and vanished net-magnetization as AFMs, making them highly promising for spintronic applications. Furthermore, they introduce nontrivial spin-momentum locking spin texture as an additional degree of freedom for realizing novel quantum phases. In this work, we report the discovery of a new type of spin-valley-locked nodal line phase in the layered AM Rb-intercalated V{_2}Te{_2}O. By combining high-resolution spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with first-principles calculations, we observe the coexistence of both spinless and spinful nodal lines near the Fermi level. Remarkably, the spinful nodal lines exhibit uniform spin polarization within each valley, while displaying opposite spin polarizations across symmetry-paired valleys-a unique feature we term spin-valley-locked nodal lines, which is exclusive to AMs. Direct measurements of out-of-plane band dispersion using a side-cleaving technique reveal the two-dimensional nature of these nodal lines. Our findings not only unveil a previously unexplored topological phase in AMs where valley-locked spin as an additional quantum character but also establish RbV{_2}Te{_2}O as a promising platform for spintronics, valleytronics, and moire-engineered quantum devices.

ConfPred: A layered intergrowth structure prediction model based on confinement self-assembly in two-dimensional interlayer space

We constructed a simple but effective model to predict the layered intergrowth structures by combining the self-assembly phenomenon in confined space and the sandwich configuration of layered materials. In this model, a two-dimensional confined space is constructed by two known block layers, such as the Fe$_2$As$_2$ block of iron-based superconductors. Then, the crystal structure prediction is carried out only inside the confined space to search for brand-new block layers. We realized this model on the basis of the USPEX9.4 code. In the test, the already existing iron-based superconductors can be always successfully found, such as Ba$_2$Ti$_2$Fe$_2$As$_4$O, Sr$_3$Sc$_2$Fe$_2$As$_2$O$_5$, Sr$_4$V$_2$Fe$_2$As$_2$O$_6$, and so on. The comparison test suggests that our model has remarkable advantages in searching for intergrowth structures. With this space confinement prediction model, a structure prediction of layered intergrowth materials even with up to six elements can be performed with an acceptable machine time consumption. So far, we have done some multi-composition crystal structure predictions of iron-based superconductor, and found several stable and metastable structures, such as Ba$_2$Fe$_2$As$_3$, Eu$_2$Fe$_2$As$_3$, La$_2$O$_2$ClFeAs, LiOMn$_2$As,Li$_4$OFe$_2$As$_2$.

NMR and NQR studies on transition-metal arsenide superconductors LaRu2As2, KCa2Fe4As4F2, and A2Cr3As3

We report 75As-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on transition-metal arsenides LaRu2As2, KCa2Fe4As4F2, and A2Cr3As3. In the superconducting state of LaRu2As2, a Hebel- Slichter coherence peak is found in the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate-1/T1 just below Tc, which indicates that LaRu2As2 is a full-gap superperconducor. For KCa2Fe4As4F2, antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are observed in the normal state. We further find that the anisotropy rate RAF = Tc1/Tab1 is small and temperature independent, implying that the low energy spin fluctuations are isotropic in spin space. Our results indicate that KCa2Fe4As4F2 is a moderately overdoped iron-arsenide high-temperature superconductor with a stoichiometric composition. For A2Cr3As3, we calculate the electric field gradient by first-principle method and assign the 75As-NQR peaks with two crystallographically different As sites, paving the way for further NMR investigation.

Superconductivity in hexagonal Nb-Mo-Ru-Rh-Pd high-entropy alloys

We report the superconducting properties of new hexagonal Nb$_{10+2x}$Mo$_{35-x}$Ru$_{35-x}$Rh$_{10}$Pd$_{10}$ high-entropy alloys (HEAs) (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 5). With increasing $x$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ shows a maximum of 6.19 K at $x$ = 2.5, while the zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) increases monotonically, reaching 8.3 T at $x$ = 5. For all $x$ values, the specific heat jump deviates from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schreiffer behavior. In addition, we show that $T_{\rm c}$ of these HEAs is not determined mainly by the density of states at the Fermi level and would be enhanced by lowering the valence electron concentration.

$^{133}$Cs and $^{75}$As NMR investigation of the normal metallic state of the quasi-one-dimensional Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$

We report $^{133}$Cs NMR and $^{75}$As Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) measurements on the normal metallic state above $T_c$ of a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ ($T_c < 1.6$~K). From the $^{133}$Cs NMR Knight shift $^{133}K$ measured at the Cs1 site, we show that the uniform spin susceptibility $χ_{spin}$ increases from 295~K to $\sim$ 60~K, followed by a mild suppression; $χ_{spin}$ then levels off below $\sim$10~K. In contrast, a vanishingly small magnitude of $^{133}K$ indicates that Cs2 sites contribute very little to electrical conduction and the exchange interactions between 3d electrons at Cr sites. Low frequency Cr spin dynamics, reflected on $^{75}$As $1/T_1T$ (the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ divided by temperature $T$), shows an analogous trend as $χ_{spin}$. Comparison with the results of $1/T_1T$ near $T_c$ with Rb$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ ($T_c=6.1$~K) and Rb$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ ($T_c=4.8$~K) establishes a systematic trend that substitution of K$^{+}$ ions with larger alkali ions progressively suppresses Cr spin fluctuations together with $T_c$.

Correlation between non-centrosymmetry and superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional compounds A2Cr3As3 (A=K, Rb)

Non-centrosymmetric superconductors, whose crystal structure is absent of inversion symmetry, have recently received special attentions due to the expectation of unconventional pairings and exotic physics associated with such pairings. The newly discovered superconductors A2Cr3As3 (A=K, Rb), featured by the quasi-one dimensional structure with conducting CrAs chains, belongs to such kind of superconductor. In this study, we are the first to report the finding that the superconductivity of A2Cr3As3 (A=K, Rb) has a positive correlation with the extent of non-centrosymmetry. Our in-situ high pressure ac susceptibility and synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the larger bond angle of As-Cr-As in the CrAs chains can be taken as a key factor controlling superconductivity. While the smaller bond angle and the distance between the CrAs chains also affect the superconductivity due to their structural connections with the angle. We find that the larger value of the difference between the larger and samller angles, which is associated with the extent of the non-centrosymmetry of the lattice structure, is in favor of superconductivity. These results are expected to shed a new light on the underlying mechanism of the superconductivity in these Q1D superconductors and also to provide new perspective in understanding other non-centrosymmetric superconductors.

Reversible tuning of superconductivity in pressurized qausi-one-dimensional A2Cr3As3 (A=K and Rb)

In-situ hydrostatic and uniaxial high pressure studies were performed on recently discovered CrAs-based qausi-one-dimensional superconductors A2Cr3As3 (A=K and Rb). The established Pressure-Temperature phase diagram in this study clearly demonstrates that either hydrostatic pressure or uniaxial pressure globally suppresses the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), and the latter is more effective than the former. Interestingly, in the same hydrostatic pressure environment, the suppressing rate of Tc in Rb2Cr3As3 is nearly twice as that of K2Cr3As3. Significantly, the reduced Tc in these superconductors can fully recover to its ambient-pressure value after the applied pressure is entirely released. Our results suggest that the bonding distance and angle between Cr-Cr in the Cr3As3 chains are the key factor in determining Tc and that the optimal lattice for superconductivity is hosted in the pristine K2Cr3As3.

Coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2

Through the combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and the heat capacity measurements, we studied the effect of Ce doping in the newly discovered SrFBiS${2}$ system. It is found that Sr${0.5}$Ce${0.5}$FBiS${2}$ undergoes a second-order transition below $7.5 K, followed by a superconducting transition with the critical temperature Tc=2.8 K. Our transport, specific heat and DC-magnetization results suggest the presence of bulk ferromagneticcorrelation of Ce ion below 7.5 K that coexist with superconductivity when the temperature is further lowered below 2.8 K.

Electronic structure of quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ from first-principles calculations

The electronic structure of quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ is studied through systematic first-principles calculations. The ground state of K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ is paramagnetic but very close to a ferromagnetic instability. Close to the Fermi level, the Cr-3d$_{z^2}$, d$_{xy}$, and d$_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals dominate the electronic states, and three bands cross $E_F$ to form one 3D Fermi surface sheet and two quasi-1D sheets. The electron DOS at $E_F$ is less than 1/3 of the experimental value, indicating an intermediate electron renormalization factor around $E_F$. Despite of the relatively small atomic numbers, the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling splitting is sizable ($\approx$ 60 meV) on the 3D Fermi surface sheet as well as on one of the quasi-1D sheets. Finally, the imaginary part of bare electron susceptibility shows large peaks at $Γ$, suggesting the existence of large ferromagnetic spin fluctuation in the compound.

Quasi-linear magnetoresistance and the violation of Kohler's rule in the quasi-one-dimensional Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ superconductor

We report on the quasi-linear in field intrachain magnetoresistance in the normal state of a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ ($T_c$$\sim$4.6 K). Both the longitudinal and transverse in-chain magnetoresistance shows a power-law dependence, $Δρ$$\propto$B$^α$, with the exponent $α$ close to 1 over a wide temperature and field range. The magnetoresistance shows no sign of saturation up to 50 tesla studied. The linear magnetoresistance observed in Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ is found to be overall inconsistent with the interpretations based on the Dirac fermions in the quantum limit, charge conductivity fluctuations as well as quantum electron-electron interference. Moreover, it is observed that the Kohler's rule, regardless of the field orientations, is violated in its normal state. This result suggests the loss of charge carriers in the normal state of this chain-containing compound, due presumably to the charge-density-wave fluctuations.

Correlation-induced self-doping in intercalated iron-pnictide superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O

The electronic structure of the intercalated iron-based superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O (Tc - 21.5 K) has been investigated by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and combined local density approximation and dynamical mean field theory calculations. The electronic states near the Fermi level are dominated by both the Fe 3d and Ti 3d orbitals, indicating that the spacing layers separating different FeAs layers are also metallic. By counting the enclosed volumes of the Fermi surface sheets, we observe a large self-doping effect, i.e. 0.25 electrons per unit cell are transferred from the FeAs layer to the Ti2As2O layer, leaving the FeAs layer in a hole-doped state. This exotic behavior is successfully reproduced by our dynamical mean field calculations, in which the self-doping effect is attributed to the electronic correlations in the Fe 3d shell. Our work provides an alternative route of effective doping without element substitution for iron-based superconductors.

Electronic Nematicity Revealed by Torque Magnetometry in Iron Arsenide EuFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

Electronic nematics, an electron orientational order which breaks the underlying rotational symmetry, have been observed in iron pnictide superconductors several years after their discovery. However, the universality of the doping dependence of this phase and its relation to other symmetry-breaking orders (such as superconductivity) in distinct families of iron pnictides, remain outstanding questions. Here we use torque magnetometry as a probe to study the rotational symmetry breaking in EuFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ without introducing external pressure. The nematic phase is found to proliferate well above the structural transition and to persist into the superconducting regime at optimal doping, after which it becomes absent or very weak, in sharp contrast to the behaviour observed in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. These measurements suggest a putative quantum nematic transition near optimal doping under the superconducting dome.

Electronic phase diagram in the new BiS2-based Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 system

In this paper, we systematically study the electron doping effect in a new BiS2-based system Sr1-xLaxFBiS2(0<x<0.7) through multiple techniques of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and Hall effect measurements. The parent compound SrFBiS2 is found to possess a semiconducting-like ground state, with thermally activation energy Eg=38 meV. By the partial substitution of La for Sr, superconductivity emerges when x > 0.3, reaching its maximal superconducting transition temperature Tc=3.5 K at x=0.55. In the normal state of superconducting samples, it is clearly seen that there exists a crossover from metallic to semiconducting state below a temperature Tmin, which shifts to lower temperatures with increasing La content. Based on these measurements, the associated electronic phase diagram of Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 system has thus been established.

Heavy Fermion Quantum Criticality and Destruction of the Kondo Effect in a Nickel Oxypnictide

A quantum critical point arises at a continuous transformation between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Studies in antiferromagnetic heavy fermion materials have revealed that quantum criticality has several classes, with an unconventional type that involves a critical destruction of the Kondo entanglement. In order to understand such varieties, it is important to extend the materials basis beyond the usual setting of intermetallic compounds. Here we show that a nickel oxypnictide, CeNiAsO, displays a heavy-fermion antiferromagnetic quantum critical point as a function of either pressure or P/As substitution. At the quantum critical point, non-Fermi liquid behavior appears, which is accompanied by a divergent effective carrier mass. Across the quantum critical point, the low-temperature Hall coefficient undergoes a rapid sign change, suggesting a sudden jump of the Fermi surface and a destruction of the Kondo effect. Our results imply that the enormous materials basis for the oxypnictides, which has been so crucial to the search for high temperature superconductivity, will also play a vital role in the effort to establish the universality classes of quantum criticality in strongly correlated electron systems.

Sr$_{0.9}$K$_{0.1}$Zn$_{1.8}$Mn$_{0.2}$As$_{2}$: a ferromagnetic semiconductor with colossal magnetoresistance

A bulk diluted magnetic semiconductor (Sr,K)(Zn,Mn)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ was synthesized with decoupled charge and spin doping. It has a hexagonal CaAl$_{2}$Si$_{2}$-type structure with the (Zn,Mn)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ layer forming a honeycomb-like network. Magnetization measurements show that the sample undergoes a ferromagnetic transition with a Curie temperature of 12 K and \revision{magnetic moment reaches about 1.5 $μ_{B}$/Mn under $μ_0H$ = 5 T and $T$ = 2 K}. Surprisingly, a colossal negative magnetoresistance, defined as $[ρ(H)-ρ(0)]/ρ(0)$, up to $-$38\% under a low field of $μ_0H$ = 0.1 T and to $-$99.8\% under $μ_0H$ = 5 T, was observed at $T$ = 2 K. The colossal magnetoresistance can be explained based on the Anderson localization theory.

Evidence for two energy gaps and Fermi liquid behavior in SrPt$_2$As$_2$ superconductor

We report a detailed calorimetric study on single crystals of the 5$d$-transition metal pnictide SrPt2As2 with a superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ $\sim$5K. The peculiar field dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ can be decomposed into two linear components. Moreover, the temperature evolution of the electronic specific heat below $T_c$ is best described by a two-gap model. These findings suggest that two energy gaps are associated with the superconductivity. In parallel, we show that the spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1$, through nuclear magnetic resonance measurement, obeys the so-called Korringa relation well. This, along with the $T^2$ dependence of resistivity at low temperatures, points to a Fermi liquid ground state in this material.

K and Mn co-doped BaCd2As2: a hexagonal structured bulk diluted magnetic semiconductor with large magnetoresistance

A bulk diluted magnetic semiconductor was found in the K and Mn co-doped BaCd2As2 system. Different from recently reported tetragonal ThCr2Si2-structured II-II-V based(Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2, the Ba1-yKyCd2-xMnxAs2 system has a hexagonal CaAl2Si2-type structure with the Cd2As2 layer forming a honeycomb-like network. The Mn concentration reaches up to its x ? 0.4. Magnetization measurements show that the samples undergo ferromagnetic transitions with Curie temperature up to 16 K. With low coercive field less than 10 Oe and large magnetoresistence of about -70%, the hexagonal structured Ba1-yKyCd2-xMnxAs2 can be served as a promising candidate for spin manipulations.

Li$_2$RhO$_3$: A spin-glassy relativistic Mott insulator

Motivated by the rich interplay among electronic correlation, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), crystal-field splitting, and geometric frustrations in the honeycomb-like lattice, we systematically investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of Li$_2$RhO$_3$. The material is semiconducting with a narrow band gap of $Δ\sim$78 meV, and its temperature dependence of resistivity conforms to 3D variable range hopping mechanism. No long-range magnetic ordering was found down to 0.5 K, due to the geometric frustrations. Instead, single atomic spin-glass behavior below the spin-freezing temperature ($\sim$6 K) was observed and its spin dynamics obeys the universal critical slowing down scaling law. First principle calculations suggested it to be a relativistic Mott insulator mediated by both electronic correlation and SOC. With moderate strength of electronic correlation and SOC, our results shed new light to the research of Heisenberg-Kitaev model in realistic materials.

Superconductivity induced by La doping in Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 system

Through a combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements, we report the effect of La doping on Sr in the newly discovered SrFBiS2 system. Superconducting transition with critical temperature Tc of 2.8 K, developed from a semiconducting-like normal state, was found in Sr0.5La0.5FBiS2. A strong diamagnetic signal and a clear specific heat anomaly associated with this transition were observed, confirming bulk superconductivity. The upper critical field Hc2(0) was estimated to be 1 Tesla by using the Ginzburg-Landau approach. Our experiments therefore demonstrate that bulk superconductivity can be achieved by electron doping in the SrFBiS2 system.

Magnetic property and crystalline electric field effect in ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type CeNi$_2$As$_2$

Millimeter sized ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type CeNi$_2$As$_2$ single crystal was synthesized by NaAs flux method and its physical properties were investigated by magnetization, transport and specific heat measurements. In contrast to the previously reported CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type CeNi$_2$As$_2$, the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type CeNi$_2$As$_2$ is a highly anisotropic uniaxial antiferromagnet with the transition temperature $T_N$=4.8 K. A field induced spin flop transition was seen below $T_N$ when the applied $\textbf{B}$ is parallel to the $\textbf{c}$-axis, the magnetic easy axis, together with a huge frustration parameter $f=θ_W/T_N$. A pronounced Schottky-like anomaly in specific heat was also found around 160 K, which could be attributed to the crystalline electric field effect with the excitation energies being fitted to $Δ_1=$325 K and $Δ_2=$520 K, respectively. Moreover, the in-plane resistivity anisotropy and low temperature X-ray diffractions suggest that this compound is a rare example exhibiting a possible structure distortion induced by the $4f$-electron magnetic frustration.

Anisotropic paramagnetism of monoclinic Nd2Ti2O7 single crystals

The anisotropic paramagnetism and specific heat in Nd2Ti2O7 single crystals are investigated. Angular dependence of the magnetization and Weiss temperatures show the dominant role of the crystal field effect in the magnetization. By incorporating the results from the diluted samples, contributions to Weiss temperature from exchange interactions and crystal field interactions are isolated. The exchange interactions are found to be ferromagnetic, while the crystal field contributes a large negative part to the Weiss temperature, along all three crystallographic directions. The specific heat under magnetic field reveals a two-level Schottky ground state scheme, due to the Zeeman splitting of the ground state doublet, and the g-factors are thus determined. These observations provide solid foundations for further investigations of Nd2Ti2O7.

CeNiAsO: an antiferromagnetic dense Kondo lattice

A cerium containing pnictide, CeNiAsO, crystallized in the ZrCuSiAs type structure, has been investigated by measuring transport and magnetic properties, as well as specific heat. We found that CeNiAsO is an antiferromagnetic dense Kondo lattice metallic compound with Kondo scale $T_K \sim$ 15 K and shows an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient of $γ_0 \sim$ 203 mJ/mol$\cdot$K$^{2}$. While no superconductivity can been observed down to 30 mK, Ce ions exhibit two successive antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions. We propose that the magnetic moment of Ce ion could align in the G type AFM order below the first transition at $T_{N1}$=9.3 K, and it might be modified into the C type AFM order below a lower transition at $T_{N2}$=7.3 K. Our results indicate that the 3$d-4f$ interlayer Kondo interactions play an important role in Ni-based Ce-containing pnictide.

Insulator-to-metal transition and large thermoelectric effect in La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnAsO

We report the Sr substitution effect in an antiferromagnetic insulator LaMnAsO. The Sr doping limit is $x\sim$ 0.10 under the synthesis conditions, as revealed by x-ray diffractions indicate. Upon Sr doping, the room-temperature resistivity drops by five orders of magnitude down to $\sim$0.01 $Ω\cdot$cm, and the temperature dependence of resistivity shows essentially metallic behavior for $x\geq$0.08. Hall and Seebeck measurements confirm consistently that the insulator-to-metal transition is due to hole doping. Strikingly, the room-temperature Seebeck coefficient for the metallic samples is as high as $\sim240 μ$V/K, making the system as a possible candidate for thermoelectric applications.

Superconductivity and ferromagnetism in EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$

Superconductivity and ferromagnetism are two antagonistic cooperative phenomena, which makes it difficult for them to coexist. Here we demonstrate experimentally that they do coexist in EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ with $0.2\leq x\leq0.4$, in which superconductivity is associated with Fe-3$d$ electrons and ferromagnetism comes from the long-range ordering of Eu-4$f$ moments via Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions. The coexistence is featured by large saturated ferromagnetic moments, high and comparable superconducting and magnetic transition temperatures, and broad coexistence ranges in temperature and field. We ascribe this unusual phenomenon to the robustness of superconductivity as well as the multi-orbital characters of iron pnictides.

Comparative study on the thermoelectric effect of parent oxypnictides La$T$AsO ($T$ = Fe, Ni)

The thermopower and Nernst effect were investigated for undoped parent compounds LaFeAsO and LaNiAsO. Both thermopower and Nernst signal in iron-based LaFeAsO are significantly larger than those in nickel-based LaNiAsO. Furthermore, abrupt changes in both thermopower and Nernst effect are observed below the structural phase transition temperature and spin-density wave (SDW) type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order temperature in Fe-based LaFeAsO. On the other hand, Nernst effect is very small in the Ni-based LaNiAsO and it is weakly temperature-dependent, reminiscent of the case in normal metals. We suggest that the effect of SDW order on the spin scattering rate should play an important role in the anomalous temperature dependence of Hall effect and Nernst effect in LaFeAsO. The contrast behavior between the LaFeAsO and LaNiAsO systems implies that the LaFeAsO system is fundamentally different from the LaNiAsO system and this may provide clues to the mechanism of high $T_c$ superconductivity in the Fe-based systems.

Effect of a Zn impurity on T_c and its implication to pairing symmetry in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$

The effect of non-magnetic Zn impurity on superconductivity in LaFe$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$AsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ system is studied systematically. In the presence of Zn impurity, the superconducting transition temperature increases in the under-doped regime, remains unchanged in the optimally doped regime, and is severely suppressed in the over-doped regime. Our results suggest a switch of the symmetry of the superconducting order parameters from a $s$-wave to $s_{\pm}$ or $d$-wave states as the charge carrier doping increases in FeAs-based superconductors.

Magnetic ordering and dense Kondo behaviour in EuFe$_{2}$P$_{2}$

Ternary iron phosphide EuFe$_2$P$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure has been systematically studied by the measurements of crystal structure, magnetization, Mössbauer effect, transport properties and specific heat. The structural refinement result confirms no direct P-P covalent bonding. The Mössbauer spectra indicate no magnetic moment for the Fe atoms and, that the Eu ions are divalent in the whole temperatures, carrying local moments of $S$=7/2. The Eu$^{2+}$ spins order ferromagnetically at $T_C$=29.5 K, followed by a possible helimagnetic ordering below $T_{HM}$=26 K, where the Eu$^{2+}$ moments tilt a little from the c-axis. External magnetic field increases $T_C$ gradually, but suppresses $T_{HM}$ rapidly. (Magneto)resistivity data indicate characteristic dense Kondo behaviour above the Curie temperature. The result is discussed in terms of the interplay between intersite RKKY and intrasite Kondo interactions.

Phase diagram of CeFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$O obtained from electric resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements

We performed a systematic study on the properties of CeFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$O ($0\leq x\leq 1$) by electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements. The c-axis lattice constant decreases significantly with increasing P content, suggesting a remarkable chemical pressure. The Fe-3d electrons show the enhanced metallic behavior upon P-doping and undergo a magnetic quantum phase transition around $x \approx 0.4$. Meanwhile, the Ce-4f electrons develop a ferromagnetic order near the same doping level. The ferromagnetic order is vanishingly small around $x=0.9$. The data suggest a heavy-fermion-like behavior as $x\geq 0.95$. No superconductivity is observed down to 2 K. Our results show the ferromagnetic ordered state as an intermediate phase intruding between the antiferromagnetic bad metal and the nonmagnetic heavy fermion metal and support the cerium-containing iron pnictides as a unique layered Kondo lattice system.

Self doping effect and successive magnetic transitions in superconducting Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_3$

We have studied a quinary Fe-based superconductor Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_3$ by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, Mössbauer spectrum, resistivity, magnetization and specific heat. This apparently undoped oxyarsenide is shown to be self doped via electron transfer from the V$^{3+}$ ions. We observed successive magnetic transitions within the VO$_2$ layers: an antiferromagnetic transition at 150 K followed by a weak ferromagnetic transition at 55 K. The spin orderings within the VO$_2$ planes are discussed based on mixed valence of V$^{3+}$ and V$^{4+}$.

Structural and superconducting properties in LaFeAs1-xSbxO1-yFy

We report the antimony (Sb) doping effect in a prototype system of iron-based supercon-ductors LaFeAsO1-yFy (y=0, 0.1, 0.15). X-ray powder diffraction indicates that the lattice pa-rameters increase with Sb content within the doping limit. Rietveld structural refinements show that, with the partial substitution of Sb for As, while the thickness of the Fe2As2 layers increases significantly, that of the La2O2 layers shrinks simultaneously. So a negative chemical pressure is indeed "applied" to the superconducting-active Fe2As2 layers, in con-trast to the effect of positive chemical pressure by the phosphorus doping. Electrical resis-tance and magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that, while the Sb doping hardly influences the SDW anomaly in LaFeAsO, it recovers SDW order for the optimally-doped sample of y=0.1. In the meantime, the superconducting transition temperature can be raised up to 30 K in LaFeAs1-xSbxO1-yFy with x=0.1 and y=0.15. The Sb doping effects are discussed in term of both J1-J2 model and Fermi Surface (FS) nesting scenario.

Suppression of $T_c$ by Zn impurity in the electron-type LaFe$_{0.925-y}$Co$_{0.075}$Zn$_y$AsO system

The effect of non-magnetic Zn impurity on superconductivity in electron-type pnictide superconductor LaFe$_{0.925-y}$Co$_{0.075}$Zn$_y$AsO is studied systematically. The optimally doped LaFe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$AsO without Zn impurity exhibits superconductivity at $T_c^{mid}$ of 13.2 K, where $T_c^{mid}$ is defiend as the mid-point in the resistive transition. In the presence of Zn impurity, the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c^{mid}$, is severely suppressed. The result is consistent with the theoretic prediction on the effect of non-magnetic impurity in the scenario of $s_{\pm}$ pairing, but it is in sharp contrast to the previous report on the effect of Zn impurity in the F-doped systems. The possible interpretation of the different effects of Zn impurity on superconductivity in different systems is discussed.

Evidence of Magnetically Driven Structural Phase Transition in Parent Compounds RFeAsO (R = La, Sm, Gd, Tb): study of low-temperature X-ray diffraction

We report measurements of structural phase transition of four parent compounds $R$FeAsO ($R$ = La, Sm, Gd, and Tb) by means of low-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD). Magnetic transition temperatures associated with Fe ions ($T_{N1}$) are also determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity. As $R$ is changed from La, through Sm and Gd, to Tb, both the c-axis and a-axis lattice constants decrease significantly. Meanwhile both the structural phase transition temperature ($T_S$) and $T_{N1}$ decrease monotonously. It is also found that the temperature gap between $T_S$ and $T_{N1}$ becomes smaller when the distance between FeAs layer becomes shorter. This result is consistent with magnetically driven structural phase transition and suggests that the dimensionality have an important effect on the AFM ordering.

Spin gap and magnetic resonance in superconducting BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$%_{0.1}$As$_{2}$

We use neutron spectroscopy to determine the nature of the magnetic excitations in superconducting BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{c}=20$ K). Above $T_{c}$ the excitations are gapless and centered at the commensurate antiferromagnetic wave vector of the parent compound, while the intensity exhibits a sinusoidal modulation along the c-axis. As the superconducting state is entered a spin gap gradually opens, whose magnitude tracks the $T$-dependence of the superconducting gap observed by angle resolved photoemission. Both the spin gap and magnetic resonance energies are temperature \textit{and} wave vector dependent, but their ratio is the same within uncertainties. These results suggest that the spin resonance is a singlet-triplet excitation related to electron pairing and superconductivity.
