Giant Linear Magneto-resistance in Nonmagnetic PtBi2

We synthesized nonmagnetic PtBi$_2$ single crystals and observed a giant linear magneto-resistance (MR) up to 684\% under a magnetic field $μ_0H$ = 15 T at $T$ = 2 K. The linear MR decreases with increasing temperature, but it is still as large as 61\% under $μ_0H$ of 15 T at room temperature. Such a giant linear MR is unlikely to be described by the quantum model as the quantum condition is not satisfied. Instead, we found that the slope of MR scales with the Hall mobility, and it can be well explained by a classical disorder model.

Helicity protected ultrahigh mobility Weyl fermions in NbP

Non-centrosymmetric transition metal monopnictides, including TaAs, TaP, NbAs, and NbP, are emergent topological Weyl semimetals (WSMs) hosting exotic relativistic Weyl fermions. In this letter, we elucidate the physical origin of the unprecedented charge carrier mobility of NbP, which can reach $1\times10^{7}$ cm $^{2}$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ at 1.5 K. Angle- and temperature-dependent quantum oscillations, supported by density function theory calculations, reveal that NbP has the coexistence of p- and n-type WSM pockets in the $k_{z}$=1.16$π$/c plane (W1-WSM) and in the $k_{z}$=0 plane near the high symmetry points $Σ$ (W2-WSM), respectively. Uniquely, each W2-WSM pocket forms a large dumbbell-shaped Fermi surface (FS) enclosing two neighboring Weyl nodes with the opposite chirality. The magneto-transport in NbP is dominated by these highly anisotropic W2-WSM pockets, in which Weyl fermions are well protected from defect backscattering by real spin conservation associated to the chiral nodes. However, with a minimal doping of $\sim$1\% Cr, the mobility of NbP is degraded by more than two order of magnitude, due to the invalid of helicity protection to magnetic impurities. Helicity protected Weyl fermion transport is also manifested in chiral anomaly induced negative magnetoresistance, controlled by the W1-WSM states. In the quantum regime below 10 K, the intervalley scattering time by impurities becomes a large constant, producing the sharp and nearly identical conductivity enhancement at low magnetic field.

Negative Magnetoresistance in Topological Semimetals of Transition-Metal Dipnictides with Nontrivial Z2 Indices

Negative magnetoresistance (NMR) induced by the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly is regarded as the most prominent quantum signature of Weyl semimetals when electrical field $E$ is collinear with the external magnetic field $B$. In this article, we report universal NMR in nonmagnetic, centrosymmetric transition metal dipnictides MPn$_{2}$ (M=Nb and Ta; Pn=As and Sb), in which the existence of Weyl fermions can be explicitly excluded. Using temperature-dependent magnetoresistance, Hall and thermoelectric coefficients of Nernst and Seebeck effects, we determine that the emergence of the NMR phenomena in MPn$_{2}$ is coincident with a Lifshitz transition, corresponding to the formation of unique electron-hole-electron ($e$-$h$-$e$) pockets along the $I-L-I'$ direction. First-principles calculations reveal that, along the $I-L-I'$ line, the $d_{xy}$ and $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbitals of the transition metal form tilted nodal rings of band crossing well below the Fermi level. Strong spin-orbital coupling gaps all the crossing points and creates the characteristic $e$-$h$-$e$ structure, making MPn$_{2}$ a topological semimetal with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ indices of [0;(111)]. By excluding the weak localization contribution of the bulk states, we conclude that the universal NMR in MPn$_{2}$ may have an exotic origin in topological surface states, which appears in pairs with opposite spin-momentum locking on nontrivial surfaces.

Topological phase transition induced extreme magnetoresistance in TaSb$_{2}$

We report extremely large positive magnetoresistance of 1.72 million percent in single crystal TaSb$_{2}$ at moderate conditions of 1.5 K and 15 T. The quadratic growth of magnetoresistance (MR $\propto\,B^{1.96}$) is not saturating up to 15 T, a manifestation of nearly perfect compensation with $<0.1\%$ mismatch between electron and hole pockets in this semimetal. The compensation mechanism is confirmed by temperature-dependent MR, Hall and thermoelectric coefficients of Nernst and Seebeck, revealing two pronounced Fermi surface reconstruction processes without spontaneous symmetry breaking, \textit{i.e.} Lifshitz transitions, at around 20 K and 60 K, respectively. Using quantum oscillations of magnetoresistance and magnetic susceptibility, supported by density-functional theory calculations, we determined that the main hole Fermi surface of TaSb$_{2}$ forms a unique shoulder structure along the $F-L$ line. The flat band top of this shoulder pocket is just a few meV above the Fermi level, leading to the observed topological phase transition at 20 K when the shoulder pocket disappears. Further increase in temperature pushes the Fermi level to the band top of the main hole pocket, induced the second Lifshitz transition at 60 K when hole pocket vanishes completely.

Unsaturated both large positive and negative magnetoresistance in Weyl Semimetal TaP

After growing successfully TaP single crystal, we measured its longitudinal resistivity (rhoxx) and Hall resistivity (rhoyx) at magnetic fields up to 9T in the temperature range of 2-300K. It was found that at 2K its magnetoresistivity (MR) reaches to 328000 percent, at 300K to 176 percent at 8T, and both do not appear saturation. We confirmed that TaP is indeed a low carrier concentration, hole-electron compensated semimetal, with a high mobility of hole muh=371000 cm2V-1s-1, and found that a magnetic-field-induced metal-insulator transition occurs at room temperature. Remarkably, as a magnetic field (H) is applied in parallel to the electric field (E), the negative MR due to chiral anomaly is observed, and reaches to -3000 percent at 9T without any signature of saturation, too, which distinguishes with other Weyl semimetals (WSMs). The analysis on the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations superimposing on the MR reveals that a nontrivial Berry phase with strong offset of 0.3958 realizes in TaP, which is the characteristic feature of the charge carriers enclosing a Weyl nodes. These results indicate that TaP is a promising candidate not only for revealing fundamental physics of the WSM state but also for some novel applications.

Heavy Fermion Quantum Criticality and Destruction of the Kondo Effect in a Nickel Oxypnictide

A quantum critical point arises at a continuous transformation between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Studies in antiferromagnetic heavy fermion materials have revealed that quantum criticality has several classes, with an unconventional type that involves a critical destruction of the Kondo entanglement. In order to understand such varieties, it is important to extend the materials basis beyond the usual setting of intermetallic compounds. Here we show that a nickel oxypnictide, CeNiAsO, displays a heavy-fermion antiferromagnetic quantum critical point as a function of either pressure or P/As substitution. At the quantum critical point, non-Fermi liquid behavior appears, which is accompanied by a divergent effective carrier mass. Across the quantum critical point, the low-temperature Hall coefficient undergoes a rapid sign change, suggesting a sudden jump of the Fermi surface and a destruction of the Kondo effect. Our results imply that the enormous materials basis for the oxypnictides, which has been so crucial to the search for high temperature superconductivity, will also play a vital role in the effort to establish the universality classes of quantum criticality in strongly correlated electron systems.

(La1-xBax)(Zn1-xMnx)AsO: A Two Dimensional "1111" Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor in Bulk Form

We report the synthesis and characterization of a bulk diluted magnetic semiconductor (La1-xBax)(Zn1-xMnx)AsO (0 <= x <= 0.2) with a layered crystal structure identical to that of the "1111" FeAs superconductors. No ferromagnetic order occurs for (Zn,Mn) substitution in the parent compound LaZnAsO without charge doping. Together with carrier doping via (La,Ba) sub- stitution, a small amount of Mn substituting for Zn results in ferromagnetic order with TC up to ~40 K, although the system remains semiconducting. Muon spin relaxation measurements confirm the development of ferromagnetic order in the entire volume, with the relationship between the internal field and TC consistent with the trend found in (Ga,Mn)As, the "111" Li(Zn,Mn)As, and the "122" (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2 systems.

K and Mn co-doped BaCd2As2: a hexagonal structured bulk diluted magnetic semiconductor with large magnetoresistance

A bulk diluted magnetic semiconductor was found in the K and Mn co-doped BaCd2As2 system. Different from recently reported tetragonal ThCr2Si2-structured II-II-V based(Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2, the Ba1-yKyCd2-xMnxAs2 system has a hexagonal CaAl2Si2-type structure with the Cd2As2 layer forming a honeycomb-like network. The Mn concentration reaches up to its x ? 0.4. Magnetization measurements show that the samples undergo ferromagnetic transitions with Curie temperature up to 16 K. With low coercive field less than 10 Oe and large magnetoresistence of about -70%, the hexagonal structured Ba1-yKyCd2-xMnxAs2 can be served as a promising candidate for spin manipulations.

Li$_2$RhO$_3$: A spin-glassy relativistic Mott insulator

Motivated by the rich interplay among electronic correlation, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), crystal-field splitting, and geometric frustrations in the honeycomb-like lattice, we systematically investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of Li$_2$RhO$_3$. The material is semiconducting with a narrow band gap of $Δ\sim$78 meV, and its temperature dependence of resistivity conforms to 3D variable range hopping mechanism. No long-range magnetic ordering was found down to 0.5 K, due to the geometric frustrations. Instead, single atomic spin-glass behavior below the spin-freezing temperature ($\sim$6 K) was observed and its spin dynamics obeys the universal critical slowing down scaling law. First principle calculations suggested it to be a relativistic Mott insulator mediated by both electronic correlation and SOC. With moderate strength of electronic correlation and SOC, our results shed new light to the research of Heisenberg-Kitaev model in realistic materials.

Magnetic property and crystalline electric field effect in ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type CeNi$_2$As$_2$

Millimeter sized ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type CeNi$_2$As$_2$ single crystal was synthesized by NaAs flux method and its physical properties were investigated by magnetization, transport and specific heat measurements. In contrast to the previously reported CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type CeNi$_2$As$_2$, the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type CeNi$_2$As$_2$ is a highly anisotropic uniaxial antiferromagnet with the transition temperature $T_N$=4.8 K. A field induced spin flop transition was seen below $T_N$ when the applied $\textbf{B}$ is parallel to the $\textbf{c}$-axis, the magnetic easy axis, together with a huge frustration parameter $f=θ_W/T_N$. A pronounced Schottky-like anomaly in specific heat was also found around 160 K, which could be attributed to the crystalline electric field effect with the excitation energies being fitted to $Δ_1=$325 K and $Δ_2=$520 K, respectively. Moreover, the in-plane resistivity anisotropy and low temperature X-ray diffractions suggest that this compound is a rare example exhibiting a possible structure distortion induced by the $4f$-electron magnetic frustration.

Anisotropic paramagnetism of monoclinic Nd2Ti2O7 single crystals

The anisotropic paramagnetism and specific heat in Nd2Ti2O7 single crystals are investigated. Angular dependence of the magnetization and Weiss temperatures show the dominant role of the crystal field effect in the magnetization. By incorporating the results from the diluted samples, contributions to Weiss temperature from exchange interactions and crystal field interactions are isolated. The exchange interactions are found to be ferromagnetic, while the crystal field contributes a large negative part to the Weiss temperature, along all three crystallographic directions. The specific heat under magnetic field reveals a two-level Schottky ground state scheme, due to the Zeeman splitting of the ground state doublet, and the g-factors are thus determined. These observations provide solid foundations for further investigations of Nd2Ti2O7.

CeNiAsO: an antiferromagnetic dense Kondo lattice

A cerium containing pnictide, CeNiAsO, crystallized in the ZrCuSiAs type structure, has been investigated by measuring transport and magnetic properties, as well as specific heat. We found that CeNiAsO is an antiferromagnetic dense Kondo lattice metallic compound with Kondo scale $T_K \sim$ 15 K and shows an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient of $γ_0 \sim$ 203 mJ/mol$\cdot$K$^{2}$. While no superconductivity can been observed down to 30 mK, Ce ions exhibit two successive antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions. We propose that the magnetic moment of Ce ion could align in the G type AFM order below the first transition at $T_{N1}$=9.3 K, and it might be modified into the C type AFM order below a lower transition at $T_{N2}$=7.3 K. Our results indicate that the 3$d-4f$ interlayer Kondo interactions play an important role in Ni-based Ce-containing pnictide.

Insulator-to-metal transition and large thermoelectric effect in La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnAsO

We report the Sr substitution effect in an antiferromagnetic insulator LaMnAsO. The Sr doping limit is $x\sim$ 0.10 under the synthesis conditions, as revealed by x-ray diffractions indicate. Upon Sr doping, the room-temperature resistivity drops by five orders of magnitude down to $\sim$0.01 $Ω\cdot$cm, and the temperature dependence of resistivity shows essentially metallic behavior for $x\geq$0.08. Hall and Seebeck measurements confirm consistently that the insulator-to-metal transition is due to hole doping. Strikingly, the room-temperature Seebeck coefficient for the metallic samples is as high as $\sim240 μ$V/K, making the system as a possible candidate for thermoelectric applications.

Superconductivity and ferromagnetism in EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$

Superconductivity and ferromagnetism are two antagonistic cooperative phenomena, which makes it difficult for them to coexist. Here we demonstrate experimentally that they do coexist in EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ with $0.2\leq x\leq0.4$, in which superconductivity is associated with Fe-3$d$ electrons and ferromagnetism comes from the long-range ordering of Eu-4$f$ moments via Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions. The coexistence is featured by large saturated ferromagnetic moments, high and comparable superconducting and magnetic transition temperatures, and broad coexistence ranges in temperature and field. We ascribe this unusual phenomenon to the robustness of superconductivity as well as the multi-orbital characters of iron pnictides.

Superconductivity at 32K and anisotropy in Tl0.58Rb0.42Fe1.72Se2 crystals

Single crystals of Tl0.58Rb0.42Fe1.72Se2 are successfully grown with the superconducting transition temperatures Tconset=32K and Tczero=31.4K. The Hall coefficient exhibits a multi-band behavior, which is very similar to that of all other Fe-based superconductors. We found that the susceptibility at the normal state decreases with decreasing the temperature, indicating a strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuation at the normal state, which might be related to the superconductivity (SC). We also determined the upper critical fields in ab-plane and along c-axis. The anisotropy of the superconductivity determined by the ratio of Hc2ab and Hc2c is estimated to 5.0, which is larger than that in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 and BaFe2-xCoxAs2, but smaller than that in cuprate superconductors.

Effect of a Zn impurity on T_c and its implication to pairing symmetry in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$

The effect of non-magnetic Zn impurity on superconductivity in LaFe$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$AsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ system is studied systematically. In the presence of Zn impurity, the superconducting transition temperature increases in the under-doped regime, remains unchanged in the optimally doped regime, and is severely suppressed in the over-doped regime. Our results suggest a switch of the symmetry of the superconducting order parameters from a $s$-wave to $s_{\pm}$ or $d$-wave states as the charge carrier doping increases in FeAs-based superconductors.

Emergent order in the spin-frustrated system DyxTb2-xTi2O7 studied by ac susceptibility measurements

We report the a.c. susceptibility study of Dy_xTb_{2-x}Ti_2O_7 with x in [0, 2]. In addition to the single-ion effect at Ts (single-ion effect peak temperature) corresponding to the Dy3+ spins as that in spin ice Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and a possible spin freezing peak at Tf (Tf < 3 K), a new peak associated with Tb^{3+} is observed in $χ_{ac}(T)$ at nonzero magnetic field with a characteristic temperature T^* (Tf < T^* < Ts). T^* increases linearly with x in a wide composition range (0 < x < 1.5 at 5 kOe). Both application of a magnetic field and increasing doping with Dy3+ enhance T^*. The T^* peak is found to be thermally driven with an unusually large energy barrier as indicated from its frequency dependence. These effects are closely related to the crystal field levels, and the underlying mechanism remains to be understood.

Fe-based high temperature superconductivity with Tc=31K bordering an insulating antiferromagnet in (Tl,K)FexSe2 Crystals

Up to now, there have been two material families, the cuprates and the iron-based compounds with high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC). An essential open question is whether the two classes of materials share the same essential physics. In both, superconductivity (SC) emerges when an antiferromagnetical (AFM) ordered phase is suppressed. However, in cuprates, the repulsive interaction among the electrons is so strong that the parent compounds are "Mott insulators." By contrast, all iron-based parents are metallic. One perspective is that the iron-based parents are weakly correlated and that the AFM arises from a strong "nesting" of the Fermi surfaces. An alternative view is that the electronic correlations in the parents are still sufficiently strong to place the system close to the boundary between itinerancy and electronic localization. A key strategy to differentiate theses views is to explore whether the iron-based system can be tuned into a Mott insulator. Here we identify an insulating AFM in (Tl,K)FexSe2 by introducing Fe-vacancies and creating superconductivity in the Fe-planar. With the increasing Fe-content, the AFM order is reduced. When the magnetism is eliminated, a superconducting phase with Tc as high as 31K (and a Tc onset as high as 40K) is induced. Our findings indicate that the correlation effect plays a crucial role in the iron-based superconductors. (Tl,K)FexSe2, therefore, represents the first Fe-based high temperature superconductor near an insulating AFM.

Magnetic ordering and dense Kondo behaviour in EuFe$_{2}$P$_{2}$

Ternary iron phosphide EuFe$_2$P$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure has been systematically studied by the measurements of crystal structure, magnetization, Mössbauer effect, transport properties and specific heat. The structural refinement result confirms no direct P-P covalent bonding. The Mössbauer spectra indicate no magnetic moment for the Fe atoms and, that the Eu ions are divalent in the whole temperatures, carrying local moments of $S$=7/2. The Eu$^{2+}$ spins order ferromagnetically at $T_C$=29.5 K, followed by a possible helimagnetic ordering below $T_{HM}$=26 K, where the Eu$^{2+}$ moments tilt a little from the c-axis. External magnetic field increases $T_C$ gradually, but suppresses $T_{HM}$ rapidly. (Magneto)resistivity data indicate characteristic dense Kondo behaviour above the Curie temperature. The result is discussed in terms of the interplay between intersite RKKY and intrasite Kondo interactions.

Self doping effect and successive magnetic transitions in superconducting Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_3$

We have studied a quinary Fe-based superconductor Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_3$ by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, Mössbauer spectrum, resistivity, magnetization and specific heat. This apparently undoped oxyarsenide is shown to be self doped via electron transfer from the V$^{3+}$ ions. We observed successive magnetic transitions within the VO$_2$ layers: an antiferromagnetic transition at 150 K followed by a weak ferromagnetic transition at 55 K. The spin orderings within the VO$_2$ planes are discussed based on mixed valence of V$^{3+}$ and V$^{4+}$.
