Beyond What to Select: A Plug-and-play Oscillatory Data-Volume Scheduling for Efficient Model Training

Data selection accelerates training by identifying representative training data while preserving model performance. However, existing methods mainly focus on designing sample-importance criteria, i.e., deciding what to select, while typically fixing the selected data volume as the target ratio throughout training. Thus, they are often dynamic in sample identity but static in data volume. In this work, we revisit data selection from an optimization perspective and show that selected-data training induces an implicit regularization effect modulated by the instantaneous selection ratio. This reveals a key trade-off: lower ratios amplify selection-induced regularization, whereas higher ratios preserve data coverage and optimization fidelity. Motivated by this insight, we propose PODS, a Plug-and-play Oscillatory Data-volume Scheduling framework. Rather than introducing another sample-scoring metric, PODS serves as a lightweight module that dynamically schedules how much data to select over training. Under the target selection ratio, PODS alternates between low-ratio regularization phases and high-ratio recovery phases to exploit selection-induced regularization without sacrificing optimization stability. With its lightweight, ratio-level, and task-agnostic design, PODS is compatible with existing static and dynamic selection methods and broadly applicable across training paradigms. Experiments across various datasets, architectures, and tasks show that PODS consistently improves the efficiency-generalization trade-off, e.g., reducing ImageNet-1k training cost by 50% with improved accuracy and accelerating LLM instruction tuning by over 2x without performance degradation.

Self-Knowledge Distillation based Self-Supervised Learning for Covid-19 Detection from Chest X-Ray Images

The global outbreak of the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has overloaded worldwide healthcare systems. Computer-aided diagnosis for COVID-19 fast detection and patient triage is becoming critical. This paper proposes a novel self-knowledge distillation based self-supervised learning method for COVID-19 detection from chest X-ray images. Our method can use self-knowledge of images based on similarities of their visual features for self-supervised learning. Experimental results show that our method achieved an HM score of 0.988, an AUC of 0.999, and an accuracy of 0.957 on the largest open COVID-19 chest X-ray dataset.

Sequence-to-Sequence Voice Reconstruction for Silent Speech in a Tonal Language

Silent Speech Decoding (SSD), based on articulatory neuromuscular activities, has become a prevalent task of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) in recent years. Many works have been devoted to decoding surface electromyography (sEMG) from articulatory neuromuscular activities. However, restoring silent speech in tonal languages such as Mandarin Chinese is still difficult. This paper proposes an optimized Sequence-to-Sequence (Seq2Seq) approach to synthesize voice from the sEMG-based silent speech. We extract duration information to regulate the sEMG-based silent speech using the audio length. Then, we provide a deep-learning model with an encoder-decoder structure and a state-of-art vocoder to generate the audio waveform. Experiments based on six Mandarin Chinese speakers demonstrate that the proposed model can successfully decode silent speech in Mandarin Chinese and achieve a character error rate (CER) of 6.41% on average with human evaluation.

TriBYOL: Triplet BYOL for Self-Supervised Representation Learning

This paper proposes a novel self-supervised learning method for learning better representations with small batch sizes. Many self-supervised learning methods based on certain forms of the siamese network have emerged and received significant attention. However, these methods need to use large batch sizes to learn good representations and require heavy computational resources. We present a new triplet network combined with a triple-view loss to improve the performance of self-supervised representation learning with small batch sizes. Experimental results show that our method can drastically outperform state-of-the-art self-supervised learning methods on several datasets in small-batch cases. Our method provides a feasible solution for self-supervised learning with real-world high-resolution images that uses small batch sizes.

The Role of the Hercules Autonomous Vehicle During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Autonomous Logistic Vehicle for Contactless Goods Transportation

Since early 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. As at the date of writing this article, the disease has been globally reported in 223 countries and regions, infected over 108 million people and caused over 2.4 million deaths (https://covid19.who.int/, accessed on Feb. 17, 2021). Avoiding person-to-person transmission is an effective approach to control and prevent the pandemic. However, many daily activities, such as transporting goods in our daily life, inevitably involve person-to-person contact. Using an autonomous logistic vehicle to achieve contact-less goods transportation could alleviate this issue. For example, it can reduce the risk of virus transmission between the driver and customers. Moreover, many countries have imposed tough lockdown measures to reduce the virus transmission (e.g., retail, catering) during the pandemic, which causes inconveniences for human daily life. Autonomous vehicle can deliver the goods bought by humans, so that humans can get the goods without going out. These demands motivate us to develop an autonomous vehicle, named as Hercules, for contact-less goods transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The vehicle is evaluated through real-world delivering tasks under various traffic conditions.

A review of smartphones based indoor positioning: challenges and applications

The continual proliferation of mobile devices has encouraged much effort in using the smartphones for indoor positioning. This article is dedicated to review the most recent and interesting smartphones based indoor navigation systems, ranging from electromagnetic to inertia to visible light ones, with an emphasis on their unique challenges and potential real-world applications. A taxonomy of smartphones sensors will be introduced, which serves as the basis to categorise different positioning systems for reviewing. A set of criteria to be used for the evaluation purpose will be devised. For each sensor category, the most recent, interesting and practical systems will be examined, with detailed discussion on the open research questions for the academics, and the practicality for the potential clients.

On the general position set of two classes of graphs

The general position problem is to find the cardinality of a largest vertex subset S such that no triple of vertices of S lie on a common geodesic. For a connected graph G, the cardinality of S is denoted by gp(G) and called gp-number (or general position number) of G. In the paper, we obtain an upper bound and a lower bound regarding gp-number in all cactus with k cycles and t pendant edges. Furthermore, the gp-number of wheel graph is determined.
