Polarization Effects of Electro-Optic Sampling and Over-Rotation for High Field THz Detection

With ever increasing availability of terahertz fields, it is important to find suitable detection techniques without compromising the measured dynamic range. Electro-optic terahertz sampling techniques, which are commonly used to detect terahertz fields, exhibit over-rotation at high fields that limit the detection accuracy. Here we discuss a method to correct for over-rotation that put no limits on measured terahertz field strengths, while preserving the low field sensitivity. We further evaluate the induced polarizations at high terahertz fields and show how over-rotation can be corrected by simultaneously measuring the polarizations before and after the quarter wave plate.

Coarse property {C} and decomposition complexity

The coarse category was established by Roe to distill the salient features of the large-scale approach to metric spaces and groups that was started by Gromov. In this paper, we use the language of coarse spaces to define coarse versions of asymptotic property C and decomposition complexity. We prove that coarse property C implies coarse property A; we also show that these coarse versions share many of the features of their metric analogs such as preservation by products or unions.

Snowmass 2013 Computing Frontier: Networking

Computing has become a major component of all particle physics experiments and in many areas of theoretical particle physics. Progress in HEP experiment and theory will require significantly more computing, software development, storage, and networking, with different projects stretching future capabilities in different ways. However, there are many common needs among different areas in HEP, so more community planning is advised to increase efficiency. Careful and continuing review of the topics we studied, i.e., user needs and capabilities of current and future technology, is needed.

The asymptotic dimension of a curve graph is finite

We find an upper bound for the asymptotic dimension of a hyperbolic metric space with a set of geodesics satisfying a certain boundedness condition studied by Bowditch. The primary example is a collection of tight geodesics on the curve graph of a compact orientable surface. We use this to conclude that a curve graph has finite asymptotic dimension. It follows then that a curve graph has property $A_1$. We also compute the asymptotic dimension of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with genus $\le 2$.
