Complete Bundle Moduli Reduction in Heterotic String Compactifications

A major problem in discussing heterotic string models is the stabilisation of the many vector bundle moduli via the superpotential generated by world-sheet instantons. In arXiv:1110.6315 we have discussed the method to make a discrete twist in a large and much discussed class of vector bundles such that the generation number gets new contributions (which can be tuned suitably) and at the same time the space of bundle moduli of the new, twisted bundle is a proper subspace (where the 'new', non-generic twist class exists) of the original bundle moduli space; one thus gets a model, closely related to the original model one started with, but with enhanced flexibility in the generation number and where on the other hand the number of bundle moduli is {\em somewhat} reduced. Whereas in the previous paper the emphasis was on examples for the new flexibility in the generation number we here classify and describe explicitly the twists and give the precise reduction formula (for the number of moduli) for SU(5) bundles leading to an SU(5) GUT group in four dimensions. Finally we give various examples where the bundle moduli space is reduced {\em completely}: the superpotential for such {\em rigid} bundles becomes a function of the complex structure moduli alone (besides the exponential Kahler moduli contribution).

Higgs Multiplets in Heterotic GUT Models

For supersymmetric GUT models from heterotic string theory, built from a stable holomorphic SU(n) vector bundle $V$ on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$, the net amount of chiral matter can be computed by a Chern class computation. Corresponding computations for the number $N_H$ of Higgses lead for the phenomenologically relevant cases of GUT group SU(5) or SO(10) to consideration of the bundle $\La^2 V$. In a class of bundles where everything can be computed explicitly (spectral bundles on elliptic $X$) we find that the computation for $N_H$ gives a result which is in conflict with expectations. We argue that this discrepancy has its origin in the subtle geometry of the spectral data for $\La^2 V$ and that taking this subtlety into account properly should resolve the problem.

Moduli restriction and Chiral Matter in Heterotic String Compactifications

Supersymmetric heterotic string models, built from a stable holomorphic vector bundle $V$ on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$, usually come with many vector bundle moduli whose stabilisation is a difficult and complex task. It is therefore of interest to look for bundle constructions which, from the outset, have as few as possible bundle moduli. One way to reach such a set-up is to start from a generic construction and to make discrete modifications of it which are available only over a subset of the bundle moduli space. Turning on such discrete 'twists' constrains the moduli to the corresponding subset of their moduli space: the twisted bundle has less parametric freedom. We give an example of a set-up where this idea can be considered concretely. Such non-generic twists lead also to new contributions of chiral matter (which greatly enhances the flexibility in model building); their computation constitutes the main issue of this note.

On possible Chern Classes of stable Bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds

Supersymmetric heterotic string models, built from a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ endowed with a stable vector bundle $V$, usually lead to an anomaly mismatch between $c_2(V)$ and $c_2(X)$; this leads to the question whether the difference can be realized by a further bundle in the hidden sector. In math.AG/0604597 a conjecture is stated which gives sufficient conditions on cohomology classes on $X$ to be realized as the Chern classes of a stable reflexive sheaf $V$; a weak version of this conjecture predicts the existence of such a $V$ if $c_2(V)$ is of a certain form. In this note we prove that on elliptically fibered $X$ infinitely many cohomology classes $c\in H^4(X, {\bf Z})$ exist which are of this form and for each of them a stable SU(n) vector bundle with $c=c_2(V)$ exists.

On the Heterotic World-sheet Instanton Superpotential and its individual Contributions

For supersymmetric heterotic string compactifications on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ endowed with a vector bundle $V$ the world-sheet superpotential $W$ is a sum of contributions from isolated rational curves $\C$ in $X$; the individual contribution is given by an exponential in the Kähler class of the curve times a prefactor given essentially by the Pfaffian which depends on the moduli of $V$ and the complex structure moduli of $X$. Solutions of $DW=0$ (or even of $DW=W=0$) can arise either by nontrivial cancellations between the individual terms in the summation over all contributing curves or because each of these terms is zero already individually. Concerning the latter case conditions on the moduli making a single Pfaffian vanish (for special moduli values) have been investigated. However, even if corresponding moduli - fulfilling these constraints - for the individual contribution of one curve are known it is not at all clear whether {\em one} choice of moduli exists which fulfills the corresponding constraints {\em for all contributing curves simultaneously}. Clearly this will in general happen only if the conditions on the 'individual zeroes' had already a conceptual origin which allows them to fit together consistently. We show that this happens for a class of cases. In the special case of spectral cover bundles we show that a relevant solution set has an interesting location in moduli space and is related to transitions which change the generation number.

Spectral Bundles and the DRY-Conjecture

Supersymmetric heterotic string models, built from a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ endowed with a stable vector bundle $V$, usually start from a phenomenologically motivated choice of a bundle $V_v$ in the visible sector, the spectral cover construction on an elliptically fibered $X$ being a prominent example. The ensuing anomaly mismatch between $c_2(V_v)$ and $c_2(X)$, or rather the corresponding differential forms, is often 'solved', on the cohomological level, by including a fivebrane. This leads to the question whether the difference can be alternatively realized by a further stable bundle. The 'DRY'-conjecture of Douglas, Reinbacher and Yau in math.AG/0604597 gives a sufficient condition on cohomology classes on $X$ to be realized as the Chern classes of a stable sheaf. In arXiv:1010.1644 we showed that infinitely many classes on $X$ exist for which the conjecture ist true. In this note we give the sufficient condition for the mentioned fivebrane classes to be realized by a further stable bundle in the hidden sector. Using a result obtained in arXiv:1011.6246 we show that corresponding bundles exist, thereby confirming this version of the DRY-Conjecture.

From Local to Global in F-Theory Model Building

When locally engineering F-theory models some D7-branes for the gauge group factors are specified and matter is localized on the intersection curves of the compact parts of the world-volumes. In this note we discuss to what extent one can draw conclusions about F-theory models by just restricting the attention locally to a particular seven-brane. Globally the possible D7-branes are not independent from each other and the (compact part of the) D7-brane can have unavoidable intrinsic singularities. Many special intersecting loci which were not chosen by hand occur inevitably, notably codimension three loci which are not intersections of matter curves. We describe these complications specifically in a global SU(5) model and also their impact on the tadpole cancellation condition.

Enlarging the Parameter Space of Heterotic M-Theory Flux Compactifications to Phenomenological Viability

Heterotic M-Theory is a promising candidate for that corner of M-theory which makes contact with the real world. However, while the theory requires one of its expansion parameters, $ε$, to be perturbatively small, a successful phenomenology requires $ε= {\cal O}(1)$. We show that the constraint to have small $ε$ is actually unnecessary: instead of the original flux compactification background valid to linear order in $ε$ one has to use its appropriate non-linear extension, the exact background solution. The exact background is determined by supersymmetry and consequently one expects the tree-level cosmological constant to vanish which we demonstrate in detail, thereby verifying once more the consistency of this background. Furthermore we show that the exact background represents precisely the 11d origin of the 5d domain wall solution which is an exact solution of the effective 5d heterotic M-theory. We also comment on singularities and the issue of chirality changing transitions in the exact background. The exact background is then applied to determine Newton's Constant for vacua with an M5 brane on the basis of a recent stabilization mechanism for the orbifold length. For vacua without M5 brane we obtain a correction to the lower bound on Newton's Constant which brings it in perfect agreement with the measured value.

Towards the Standard Model spectrum from elliptic Calabi-Yau

We show that it is possible to construct supersymmetric three-generation models of Standard Model gauge group in the framework of non-simply-connected elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau, without section but with a bi-section. The fibrations on a cover Calabi-Yau, where the model has 6 generations of SU(5) and the bundle is given via the spectral cover description, use a different description of the elliptic fibre which leads to more than one global section. We present two examples of a possible cover Calabi-Yau with a free involution: one is a fibre product of rational elliptic surfaces $dP_9$; another example is an elliptic fibration over a Hirzebruch surface. There we give the necessary amount of chiral matter by turning on in the bundles a further parameter, related to singularities of the fibration and the branching of the spectral cover.

Superpotential of the M-theory conifold and type IIA string theory

The membrane instanton superpotential for $M$-theory on the $G_2$ holonomy manifold given by the cone on ${\bf S^3}\x {\bf S^3}$ is given by the dilogarithm and has Heisenberg monodromy group in the quantum moduli space. We compare this to a Heisenberg group action on the type IIA hypermultiplet moduli space for the universal hypermultiplet, to metric corrections from membrane instantons related to a twisted dilogarithm for the deformed conifold and to a flat bundle related to a conifold period, the Heisenberg group and the dilogarithm appearing in five-dimensional Seiberg/Witten theory.

Superpotentials for M-theory on a G_2 holonomy manifold and Triality symmetry

For $M$-theory on the $G_2$ holonomy manifold given by the cone on ${\bf S^3}\x {\bf S^3}$ we consider the superpotential generated by membrane instantons and study its transformations properties, especially under monodromy transformations and triality symmetry. We find that the latter symmetry is, essentially, even a symmetry of the superpotential. As in Seiberg/Witten theory, where a flat bundle given by the periods of an universal elliptic curve over the $u$-plane occurs, here a flat bundle related to the Heisenberg group appears and the relevant universal object over the moduli space is related to hyperbolic geometry.

G-Fluxes and Non-Perturbative Stabilisation of Heterotic M-Theory

We examine heterotic M-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold with an additional parallel M5 brane. The dominant non-perturbative effect stems from open membrane instantons connecting the M5 with the boundaries. We derive the four-dimensional low-energy supergravity potential for this situation including subleading contributions as it turns out that the leading term vanishes after minimisation. At the minimum of the potential the M5 gets stabilised at the middle of the orbifold interval while the vacuum energy is shown to be manifestly positive. Moreover, induced by the non-trivial running of the Calabi-Yau volume along the orbifold which is driven by the G-fluxes, we find that the orbifold-length and the Calabi-Yau volume modulus are stabilised at values which are related by the G-flux of the visible boundary. Finally we determine the supersymmetry-breaking scale and the gravitino mass for this open membrane vacuum.

Fluxes in Heterotic and Type II String Compactifications

In this paper we consider heterotic compactifications on K3 x T2 as well as type II compactifications on K3-fibred Calabi-Yau spaces with certain fluxes for the gauge and RR field strengths F and H turned on. By providing an identification of corresponding fluxes we show that the well-known N=2 heterotic/type II string-string duality still holds for a subset of all possible fluxes, namely those which arise from six-dimensional gauge fields with internal magnetic flux on the common two-sphere P1, which is the base space of the type II K3-fibration. On the other hand, F- and H-fluxes without P1-support, such as heterotic F-fluxes on the torus T2 or type II H-fluxes on cycles of the K3-fibre cannot be matched in any simple way, which is a challenge for heterotic/type II string-string duality. Our analysis is based on the comparison of terms in the effective low-energy heterotic and type II actions which are induced by the fluxes, such as the Green-Schwarz couplings related to flux-induced U(1) anomalies, the effective superpotential and the Fayet-Iliopoulos scalar potential.

Four-Flux and Warped Heterotic M-Theory Compactifications

In the framework of heterotic M-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold 'times' an interval, the relation between geometry and four-flux is derived {\it beyond first order}. Besides the case with general flux which cannot be described by a warped geometry one is naturally led to consider two special types of four-flux in detail. One choice shows how the M-theory relation between warped geometry and flux reproduces the analogous one of the weakly coupled heterotic string with torsion. The other one leads to a {\it quadratic} dependence of the Calabi-Yau volume with respect to the orbifold direction which avoids the problem with negative volume of the first order approximation. As in the first order analysis we still find that Newton's Constant is bounded from below at just the phenomenologically relevant value. However, the bound does not require an {\it ad hoc} truncation of the orbifold-size any longer. Finally we demonstrate explicitly that to leading order in $κ^{2/3}$ no Cosmological Constant is induced in the four-dimensional low-energy action. This is in accord with what one can expect from supersymmetry.

Instanton Numbers and Exchange Symmetries in $N=2$ Dual String Pairs

In this note, we comment on Calabi-Yau spaces with Hodge numbers $h_{1,1}=3$ and $h_{2,1}=243$. We focus on the Calabi-Yau space $WP_{1,1,2,8,12}(24)$ and show how some of its instanton numbers are related to coefficients of certain modular forms. We also comment on the relation of four dimensional exchange symmetries in certain $N=2$ dual models to six dimensional heterotic/heterotic string duality.
