D-brane masses at special fibres of hypergeometric families of Calabi-Yau threefolds, modular forms, and periods

We consider the fourteen families $W$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds with one complex structure parameter and Picard-Fuchs equation of hypergeometric type, like the mirror of the quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$. Mirror symmetry identifies the masses of even--dimensional D--branes of the mirror Calabi-Yau $M$ with four periods of the holomorphic $(3,0)$-form over a symplectic basis of $H_3(W,\mathbb{Z})$. It was discovered by Chad Schoen that the singular fiber at the conifold of the quintic gives rise to a Hecke eigenform of weight four under $Γ_0(25)$, whose Hecke eigenvalues are determined by the Hasse-Weil zeta function which can be obtained by counting points of that fiber over finite fields. Similar features are known for the thirteen other cases. In two cases we further find special regular points, so called rank two attractor points, where the Hasse-Weil zeta function gives rise to modular forms of weight four and two. We numerically identify entries of the period matrix at these special fibers as periods and quasiperiods of the associated modular forms. In one case we prove this by constructing a correspondence between the conifold fiber and a Kuga-Sato variety. We also comment on simpler applications to local Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Lost Chapters in CHL Black Holes: Untwisted Quarter-BPS Dyons in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Model

Motivated by recent advances in Donaldson-Thomas theory, four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ string-string duality is examined in a reduced rank theory on a less studied BPS sector. In particular we identify candidate partition functions of "untwisted" quarter-BPS dyons in the heterotic $\mathbb{Z}_2$ CHL model by studying the associated chiral genus two partition function, based on the M-theory lift of string webs argument by Dabholkar and Gaiotto. This yields meromorphic Siegel modular forms for the Iwahori subgroup $B(2) \subset \text{Sp}_4 (\mathbb{Z}) $ which generate BPS indices for dyons with untwisted sector electric charge, in contrast to twisted sector dyons counted by a multiplicative lift of twisted-twining elliptic genera known from Mathieu moonshine. The new partition functions are shown to satisfy the expected constraints coming from wall-crossing and S-duality symmetry as well as the black hole entropy based on the Gauss-Bonnet term in the effective action. In these aspects our analysis confirms and extends work of Banerjee, Sen and Srivastava, which only addressed a subset of the untwisted sector dyons considered here. Our results are also compared with recently conjectured formulae of Bryan and Oberdieck for the partition functions of primitive DT invariants of the CHL orbifold $X=( \text{K3} \times T^2 )/ \mathbb{Z}_2$, as suggested by string duality with type IIA theory on $X$.

State counting on fibered CY-3 folds and the non-Abelian Weak Gravity Conjecture

We extend the dictionary between the BPS spectrum of Heterotic strings and the one of F-/M-theory compactifications on $K3$ fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds to cases with higher rank non-Abelian gauge groups and in particular to dual pairs between Heterotic CHL orbifolds and compactifications on Calabi-Yau 3-folds with a compatible genus one fibration. We show how to obtain the new supersymmetric index purely from the Calabi-Yau geometry by reconstructing the Noether-Lefschetz generators, which are vector-valued modular forms. There is an isomorphism between the latter objects and vector-valued lattice Jacobi forms, which relates them to the elliptic genera and twisted-twined elliptic genera of six- and five-dimensional Heterotic strings. The meromorphic Jacobi forms generate the dimensions of the refined cohomology of the Hilbert schemes of symmetric products of the fiber and allow us to refine the BPS indices in the fiber and therefore to obtain, conjecturally, actual state counts. Using the properties of the vector-valued lattice Jacobi forms we also provide a mathematical proof of the non-Abelian weak gravity conjecture for F-/M-theory compactified on this general class of fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

The $l$-loop Banana Amplitude from GKZ Systems and relative Calabi-Yau Periods

We use the GKZ description of periods and certain classes of relative periods on families of Barth-Nieto Calabi-Yau $(l-1)$-folds in order to solve the $l$-loop banana amplitudes with their general mass dependence. As examples we compute the mass dependencies of the banana amplitudes up to the three-loop case and check the results against the known results for special mass values.

Elliptic Blowup Equations for 6d SCFTs. II: Exceptional Cases

The building blocks of 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs include certain rank one theories with gauge group $G=SU(3),SO(8),F_4,E_{6,7,8}$. In this paper, we propose a universal recursion formula for the elliptic genera of all such theories. This formula is solved from the elliptic blowup equations introduced in our previous paper. We explicitly compute the elliptic genera and refined BPS invariants, which recover all previous results from topological string theory, modular bootstrap, Hilbert series, 2d quiver gauge theories and 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal $H_{G}$ theories. We also observe an intriguing relation between the $k$-string elliptic genus and the Schur indices of rank $k$ $H_{G}$ SCFTs, as a generalization of Lockhart-Zotto's conjecture at the rank one cases. In a subsequent paper, we deal with all other non-Higgsable clusters with matters.

Elliptic Blowup Equations for 6d SCFTs. III: E-strings, M-strings and Chains

We establish the elliptic blowup equations for E-strings and M-strings and solve elliptic genera and refined BPS invariants from them. Such elliptic blowup equations can be derived from a path integral interpretation. We provide toric hypersurface construction for the Calabi-Yau geometries of M-strings and those of E-strings with up to three mass parameters turned on, as well as an approach to derive the perturbative prepotential directly from the local description of the Calabi-Yau threefolds. We also demonstrate how to systematically obtain blowup equations for all rank one 5d SCFTs from E-string by blow-down operations. Finally, we present blowup equations for E-M and M string chains.

Direct Integration for Mirror Curves of Genus Two and an Almost Meromorphic Siegel Modular Form

This work considers aspects of almost holomorphic and meromorphic Siegel modular forms from the perspective of physics and mathematics. The first part is concerned with (refined) topological string theory and the direct integration of the holomorphic anomaly equations. Here, a central object to compute higher genus amplitudes, which serve as the generating functions of various enumerative invariants, is provided by the so-called propagator. We derive a universal expression for the propagator for geometries that have mirror curves of genus two which is given by the derivative of the logarithm of Igusa's cusp form of weight 10. In addition, we illustrate our findings by solving the refined topological string on the resolutions of the three toric orbifolds of order three, five and six. In the second part, we give explicit expressions for lowering and raising operators on Siegel modular forms, and define almost holomorphic Siegel modular forms based on them. Extending the theory of Fourier-Jacobi expansions to almost holomorphic Siegel modular forms and building up on recent work by Pitale, Saha, and Schmidt, we can show that there is no analogue of the almost holomorphic elliptic second Eisenstein series. In the case of genus 2, we provide an almost meromorphic substitute for it. This, in particular, leads us to a generalization of Ramanujan's differential equation for the second Eisenstein series. The two parts are intertwined by the observation that the meromorphic analogue of the almost holomorphic second Eisenstein series coincides with the physical propagator. In addition, the generalized Ramanujan identities match precisely the physical consistency conditions that need to be imposed on the propagator.

Exact solutions to quantum spectral curves by topological string theory

We generalize the conjectured connection between quantum spectral problems and topological strings to many local almost del Pezzo surfaces with arbitrary mass parameters. The conjecture uses perturbative information of the topological string in the unrefined and the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit to solve non-perturbatively the quantum spectral problem. We consider the quantum spectral curves for the local almost del Pezzo surfaces of $\mathbb{F}_2$, $\mathbb{F}_1$, the blowup of $\mathbb{P}^2$ in two points and a mass deformation of the $E_8$ del Pezzo corresponding to different deformations of the three-term operators $\mathsf{O}_{1,1}$, $\mathsf{O}_{1,2}$ and $\mathsf{O}_{2,3}$. To check the conjecture, we compare the predictions for the spectrum of these operators with numerical results for the eigenvalues. We also compute the first few fermionic spectral traces from the conjectural spectral determinant, and we compare them to analytic and numerical results in spectral theory. In all these comparisons, we find that the conjecture is fully validated with high numerical precision. For local $\mathbb{F}_2$ we expand the spectral determinant around the orbifold point and find intriguing relations for Jacobi theta functions. We also give an explicit map between the geometries of $\mathbb{F}_0$ and $\mathbb{F}_2$ as well as a systematic way to derive the operators $\mathsf{O}_{m,n}$ from toric geometries.

Topological String on elliptic CY 3-folds and the ring of Jacobi forms

We give evidence that the all genus amplitudes of topological string theory on compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds can be written in terms of meromorphic Jacobi forms whose weight grows linearly and whose index grows quadratically with the base degree. The denominators of these forms have a simple universal form with the property that the poles of the meromorphic form lie only at torsion points. The modular parameter corresponds to the fibre class while the role of the string coupling is played by the elliptic parameter. This leads to very strong all genus results on these geometries, which are checked against results from curve counting. The structure can be viewed as an indication that an N=2 analog of the reciprocal of the Igusa cusp form exists that might govern the topological string theory on these Calabi-Yau manifolds completely.

Knot Invariants from Topological Recursion on Augmentation Varieties

Using the duality between Wilson loop expectation values of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$ and topological open-string amplitudes on the local mirror of the resolved conifold, we study knots on $S^3$ and their invariants encoded in colored HOMFLY polynomials by means of topological recursion. In the context of the local mirror Calabi-Yau threefold of the resolved conifold, we generalize the topological recursion of the remodelled B-model in order to study branes beyond the class of toric Harvey-Lawson special Lagrangians -- as required for analyzing non-trivial knots on $S^3$. The basic ingredients for the proposed recursion are the spectral curve, given by the augmentation variety of the knot, and the calibrated annulus kernel, encoding the topological annulus amplitudes associated to the knot. We present an explicit construction of the calibrated annulus kernel for torus knots and demonstrate the validity of the topological recursion. We further argue that -- if an explicit form of the calibrated annulus kernel is provided for any other knot -- the proposed topological recursion should still be applicable. We study the implications of our proposal for knot theory, which exhibit interesting consequences for colored HOMFLY polynomials of mutant knots.

Landscaping with fluxes and the E8 Yukawa Point in F-theory

Integrality in the Hodge theory of Calabi-Yau fourfolds is essential to find the vacuum structure and the anomaly cancellation mechanism of four dimensional F-theory compactifications. We use the Griffiths-Frobenius geometry and homological mirror symmetry to fix the integral monodromy basis in the primitive horizontal subspace of Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The Gamma class and supersymmetric localization calculations in the 2d gauged linear sigma model on the hemisphere are used to check and extend this method. The result allows us to study the superpotential and the Weil-Petersson metric and an associated tt* structure over the full complex moduli space of compact fourfolds for the first time. We show that integral fluxes can drive the theory to N=1 supersymmetric vacua at orbifold points and argue that fluxes can be chosen that fix the complex moduli of F-theory compactifications at gauge enhancements including such with U(1) factors. Given the mechanism it is natural to start with the most generic complex structure families of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-fold fibrations over a given base. We classify these families in toric ambient spaces and among them the ones with heterotic duals. The method also applies to the creating of matter and Yukawa structures in F-theory. We construct two SU(5) models in F-theory with a Yukawa point that have a point on the base with an $E_8$-type singularity on the fiber and explore their embeddings in the global models. The explicit resolution of the singularity introduce a higher dimensional fiber and leads to novel features.

Quantum geometry of del Pezzo surfaces in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit

We use mirror symmetry, quantum geometry and modularity properties of elliptic curves to calculate the refined free energies in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit on non-compact toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, based on del Pezzo surfaces. Quantum geometry here is to be understood as a quantum deformed version of rigid special geometry, which has its origin in the quantum mechanical behaviour of branes in the topological string B-model. We will argue that, in the Seiberg-Witten picture, only the Coulomb parameters lead to quantum corrections, while the mass parameters remain uncorrected. In certain cases we will also compute the expansion of the free energies at the orbifold point and the conifold locus. We will compute the quantum corrections order by order on $\hbar$, by deriving second order differential operators, which act on the classical periods.

Strings of Minimal 6d SCFTs

We study strings associated with minimal 6d SCFTs, which by definition have only one string charge and no Higgs branch. These theories are labelled by a number n with 1 <= n <= 8 or n = 12. Quiver theories have previously been proposed which describe strings of SCFTs for n = 1, 2. For n > 2 the strings interact with the bulk gauge symmetry. In this paper we find a quiver description for the n = 4 string using Sen's limit of F-theory and calculate its elliptic genus with localization techniques. This result is checked using the duality of F-theory with M-theory and topological string theory whose refined BPS partition function captures the elliptic genus of the SCFT strings. We use the topological string theory to gain insight into the elliptic genus for other values of n.

ABJM Wilson loops in the Fermi gas approach

The matrix model of ABJM theory can be formulated in terms of a Fermi gas in an external potential. We show that, in this formalism, vevs of Wilson loops correspond to averages of operators in the statistical-mechanical problem. This makes it possible to calculate these vevs at all orders in 1/N, up to exponentially small corrections, and for arbitrary Chern-Simons coupling, by using the WKB expansion. We present explicit results for the vevs of 1/6 and the 1/2 BPS Wilson loops, at any winding number, in terms of Airy functions. Our expressions are shown to reproduce the low genus results obtained previously in the 't Hooft expansion.

Refined stable pair invariants for E-, M- and [p,q]-strings

We use mirror symmetry, the refined holomorphic anomaly equation and modularity properties of elliptic singularities to calculate the refined BPS invariants of stable pairs on non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds, based on del Pezzo surfaces and elliptic surfaces, in particular the half K3. The BPS numbers contribute naturally to the five-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric index of M-theory, but they can be also interpreted in terms of the superconformal index in six dimensions and upon dimensional reduction the generating functions count N=2 Seiberg-Witten gauge theory instantons in four dimensions. Using the M/F-theory uplift the additional information encoded in the spin content can be used in an essential way to obtain information about BPS states in physical systems associated to small instantons, tensionless strings, gauge symmetry enhancement in F-theory by [p,q]-strings as well as M-strings.

The Omega deformed B-model for rigid N=2 theories

We give an interpretation of the Omega deformed B-model that leads naturally to the generalized holomorphic anomaly equations. Direct integration of the latter calculates topological amplitudes of four dimensional rigid N=2 theories explicitly in general Omega-backgrounds in terms of modular forms. These amplitudes encode the refined BPS spectrum as well as new gravitational couplings in the effective action of N=2 supersymmetric theories. The rigid N=2 field theories we focus on are the conformal rank one N=2 Seiberg-Witten theories. The failure of holomorphicity is milder in the conformal cases, but fixing the holomorphic ambiguity is only possible upon mass deformation. Our formalism applies irrespectively of whether a Lagrangian formulation exists. In the class of rigid N=2 theories arising from compactifications on local Calabi-Yau manifolds, we consider the theory of local P2. We calculate motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants for this geometry and make predictions for generalized Gromov-Witten invariants at the orbifold point.

The refined BPS index from stable pair invariants

A refinement of the stable pair invariants of Pandharipande and Thomas for non-compact Calabi-Yau spaces is introduced based on a virtual Bialynicki-Birula decomposition with respect to a C* action on the stable pair moduli space, or alternatively the equivariant index of Nekrasov and Okounkov. This effectively calculates the refined index for M-theory reduced on these Calabi-Yau geometries. Based on physical expectations we propose a product formula for the refined invariants extending the motivic product formula of Morrison, Mozgovoy, Nagao, and Szendroi for local P^1. We explicitly compute refined invariants in low degree for local P^2 and local P^1 x P^1 and check that they agree with the predictions of the direct integration of the generalized holomorphic anomaly and with the product formula. The modularity of the expressions obtained in the direct integration approach allows us to relate the generating function of refined PT invariants on appropriate geometries to Nekrasov's partition function and a refinement of Chern-Simons theory on a lens space. We also relate our product formula to wallcrossing.

Torus Knots and the Topological Vertex

We propose a class of toric Lagrangian A-branes on the resolved conifold that is suitable to describe torus knots on S^3. The key role is played by the SL(2,Z) transformation, which generates a general torus knot from the unknot. Applying the topological vertex to the proposed A-branes, we rederive the colored HOMFLY polynomials for torus knots, in agreement with the Rosso and Jones formula. We show that our A-model construction is mirror symmetric to the B-model analysis of Brini, Eynard and Marino. Comparing to the recent proposal by Aganagic and Vafa for knots on S^3, we demonstrate that the disk amplitude of the A-brane associated to any knot is sufficient to reconstruct the entire B-model spectral curve. Finally, the construction of toric Lagrangian A-branes is generalized to other local toric Calabi-Yau geometries, which paves the road to study knots in other three-manifolds such as lens spaces.

Five-Brane Superpotentials, Blow-Up Geometries and SU(3) Structure Manifolds

We investigate the dynamics of space-time filling five-branes wrapped on curves in heterotic and orientifold Calabi-Yau compactifications. We first study the leading N=1 scalar potential on the infinite deformation space of the brane-curve around a supersymmetric configuration. The higher order potential is also determined by a brane superpotential which we compute for a subset of light deformations. We argue that these deformations map to new complex structure deformations of a non-Calabi-Yau manifold which is obtained by blowing up the brane-curve into a four-cycle and by replacing the brane by background fluxes. This translates the original brane-bulk system into a unifying geometrical formulation. Using this blow-up geometry we compute the complete set of open-closed Picard-Fuchs differential equations and identify the brane superpotential at special points in the field space for five-branes in toric Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This has an interpretation in open mirror symmetry and enables us to list compact disk instanton invariants. As a first step towards promoting the blow-up geometry to a supersymmetric heterotic background we propose a non-Kaehler SU(3) structure and an identification of the three-form flux.

Computing Brane and Flux Superpotentials in F-theory Compactifications

In four-dimensional F-theory compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry the fields describing the dynamics of space-time filling 7-branes are part of the complex structure moduli space of the internal Calabi-Yau fourfold. We explicitly compute the flux superpotential in F-theory depending on all complex structure moduli, including the 7-brane deformations and the field corresponding to the dilaton-axion. Since fluxes on the 7-branes induce 5-brane charge, a local limit allows to effectively match the F-theory results to a D5-brane in a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold with threeform fluxes. We analyze the classical and instanton contributions to the F-theory superpotential using mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The F-theory compactifications under consideration also admit heterotic dual descriptions and we discuss the identification of the moduli in this non-perturbative duality.

Direct Integration and Non-Perturbative Effects in Matrix Models

We show how direct integration can be used to solve the closed amplitudes of multi-cut matrix models with polynomial potentials. In the case of the cubic matrix model, we give explicit expressions for the ring of non-holomorphic modular objects that are needed to express all closed matrix model amplitudes. This allows us to integrate the holomorphic anomaly equation up to holomorphic modular terms that we fix by the gap condition up to genus four. There is an one-dimensional submanifold of the moduli space in which the spectral curve becomes the Seiberg--Witten curve and the ring reduces to the non-holomorphic modular ring of the group $Γ(2)$. On that submanifold, the gap conditions completely fix the holomorphic ambiguity and the model can be solved explicitly to very high genus. We use these results to make precision tests of the connection between the large order behavior of the 1/N expansion and non-perturbative effects due to instantons. Finally, we argue that a full understanding of the large genus asymptotics in the multi-cut case requires a new class of non-perturbative sectors in the matrix model.

Direct integration for general Omega backgrounds

We extend the direct integration method of the holomorphic anomaly equations to general Omega backgrounds for pure SU(2) N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory and topological string theory on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find that an extension of the holomorphic anomaly equation, modularity and boundary conditions provided by the perturbative terms as well as by the gap condition at the conifold are sufficient to solve the generalized theory in the above cases. In particular we use the method to solve the topological string for the general Omega backgrounds on non-compact toric Calabi-Yau spaces. The conifold boundary condition follows from that the N=2 Schwinger-Loop calculation with BPS states coupled to a self-dual and an anti-self-dual field strength. We calculate such BPS states also for the decompactification limit of Calabi-Yau spaces with regular K3 fibrations and half K3s embedded in Calabi-Yau backgrounds.

Five-Brane Superpotentials and Heterotic/F-theory Duality

Under heterotic/F-theory duality it was argued that a wide class of heterotic five-branes is mapped into the geometry of an F-theory compactification manifold. In four-dimensional compactifications this identifies a five-brane wrapped on a curve in the base of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with a specific F-theory Calabi-Yau fourfold containing the blow-up of the five-brane curve. We argue that this duality can be reformulated by first constructing a non-Calabi-Yau heterotic threefold by blowing up the curve of the five-brane into a divisor with five-brane flux. Employing heterotic/F-theory duality this leads us to the construction of a Calabi-Yau fourfold and four-form flux. Moreover, we obtain an explicit map between the five-brane superpotential and an F-theory flux superpotential. The map of the open-closed deformation problem of a five-brane in a compact Calabi-Yau threefold into a deformation problem of complex structures on a dual Calabi-Yau fourfold with four-form flux provides a powerful tool to explicitly compute the five-brane superpotential.

Wall-crossing holomorphic anomaly and mock modularity of multiple M5-branes

Using wall-crossing formulae and the theory of mock modular forms we derive a holomorphic anomaly equation for the modified elliptic genus of two M5-branes wrapping a rigid divisor inside a Calabi-Yau manifold. The anomaly originates from restoring modularity of an indefinite theta-function capturing the wall-crossing of BPS invariants associated to D4-D2-D0 brane systems. We show the compatibility of this equation with anomaly equations previously observed in the context of N=4 topological Yang-Mills theory on P^2 and E-strings obtained from wrapping M5-branes on a del Pezzo surface. The non-holomorphic part is related to the contribution originating from bound-states of singly wrapped M5-branes on the divisor. We show in examples that the information provided by the anomaly is enough to compute the BPS degeneracies for certain charges. We further speculate on a natural extension of the anomaly to higher D4-brane charge.

Holomorphicity and Modularity in Seiberg-Witten Theories with Matter

We calculate the gravitational corrections to the effective action of N=2 SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory with matter using modularity, the holomorphic anomaly equation and expected behavior at the boundaries of the moduli space. As in pure gauge theory we show that the gap condition at the dyon singularities completely fixes the gravitational corrections. We discuss the behavior of the gravitational corrections at the conformal points. We compare our results with the recursive solution of the loop equation in the matrix model approach, which provides in addition open amplitudes.

Solving the Topological String on K3 Fibrations

We present solutions of the holomorphic anomaly equations for compact two-parameter Calabi-Yau manifolds which are hypersurfaces in weighted projective space. In particular we focus on K3-fibrations where due to heterotic type II duality the topological invariants in the fibre direction are encoded in certain modular forms. The formalism employed provides holomorphic expansions of topological string amplitudes everywhere in moduli space.

The D5-brane effective action and superpotential in N=1 compactifications

The four-dimensional effective action for D5-branes in generic compact Calabi-Yau orientifolds is computed by performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction. The N=1 Kaehler potential, the superpotential, the gauge-kinetic coupling function and the D-terms are derived in terms of the geometric data of the internal space and of the two-cycle wrapped by the D5-brane. In particular, we obtain the D5-brane and flux superpotential by integrating out four-dimensional three-forms which couple via the Chern-Simons action. Also the infinitesimal complex structure deformations of the two-cycle induced by the deformations of the ambient space contribute to the F-terms. The superpotential can be expressed in terms of relative periods depending on both the open and closed moduli. To analyze this dependence we blow up along the two-cycle and obtain a rigid divisor in an auxiliary compact threefold with negative first Chern class. The variation of the mixed Hodge structure on this blown-up geometry is equivalent to the original deformation problem and can be analyzed by Picard-Fuchs equations. We exemplify the blow-up procedure for a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold given by the canonical bundle over del Pezzo surfaces.

Integrability of the holomorphic anomaly equations

We show that modularity and the gap condition make the holomorphic anomaly equation completely integrable for non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. This leads to a very efficient formalism to solve the topological string on these geometries in terms of almost holomorphic modular forms. The formalism provides in particular holomorphic expansions everywhere in moduli space including large radius points, the conifold loci, Seiberg-Witten points and the orbifold points. It can be also viewed as a very efficient method to solve higher genus closed string amplitudes in the $\frac{1}{N^2}$ expansion of matrix models with more then one cut.

Topological open strings on orbifolds

We use the remodeling approach to the B-model topological string in terms of recursion relations to study open string amplitudes at orbifold points. To this end, we clarify modular properties of the open amplitudes and rewrite them in a form that makes their transformation properties under the modular group manifest. We exemplify this procedure for the C^3/Z_3 orbifold point of local P^2, where we present results for topological string amplitudes for genus zero and up to three holes, and for the one-holed torus. These amplitudes can be understood as generating functions for either open orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of C^3/Z_3, or correlation functions in the orbifold CFT involving insertions of both bulk and boundary operators.

U(1) Mediation of Flux Supersymmetry Breaking

We study the mediation of supersymmetry breaking triggered by background fluxes in Type II string compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry. The mediation arises due to an U(1) vector multiplet coupling to both a hidden supersymmetry breaking flux sector and a visible D-brane sector. The required internal manifolds can be constructed by non-Kaehler resolutions of singular Calabi-Yau manifolds. The effective action encoding the U(1) coupling is then determined in terms of the global topological properties of the internal space. We investigate suitable local geometries for the hidden and visible sector in detail. This includes a systematic study of orientifold symmetries of del Pezzo surfaces realized in compact geometries after geometric transition. We construct compact examples admitting the key properties to realize flux supersymmetry breaking and U(1) mediation. Their toric realization allows us to analyze the geometry of curve classes and confirm the topological connection between the hidden and visible sector.

Direct Integration of the Topological String

We present a new method to solve the holomorphic anomaly equations governing the free energies of type B topological strings. The method is based on direct integration with respect to the non-holomorphic dependence of the amplitudes, and relies on the interplay between non-holomorphicity and modularity properties of the topological string amplitudes. We develop a formalism valid for any Calabi-Yau manifold and we study in detail two examples, providing closed expressions for the amplitudes at low genus, as well as a discussion of the boundary conditions that fix the holomorphic ambiguity. The first example is the non-compact Calabi-Yau underlying Seiberg-Witten theory and its gravitational corrections. The second example is the Enriques Calabi-Yau, which we solve in full generality up to genus six. We discuss various aspects of this model: we obtain a new method to generate holomorphic automorphic forms on the Enriques moduli space, we write down a new product formula for the fiber amplitudes at all genus, and we analyze in detail the field theory limit. This allows us to uncover the modularity properties of SU(2), N=2 super Yang-Mills theory with four massless hypermultiplets.

Towards the Standard Model spectrum from elliptic Calabi-Yau

We show that it is possible to construct supersymmetric three-generation models of Standard Model gauge group in the framework of non-simply-connected elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau, without section but with a bi-section. The fibrations on a cover Calabi-Yau, where the model has 6 generations of SU(5) and the bundle is given via the spectral cover description, use a different description of the elliptic fibre which leads to more than one global section. We present two examples of a possible cover Calabi-Yau with a free involution: one is a fibre product of rational elliptic surfaces $dP_9$; another example is an elliptic fibration over a Hirzebruch surface. There we give the necessary amount of chiral matter by turning on in the bundles a further parameter, related to singularities of the fibration and the branching of the spectral cover.

Topological Strings and Integrable Hierarchies

We consider the topological B-model on local Calabi-Yau geometries. We show how one can solve for the amplitudes by using W-algebra symmetries which encodes the symmetries of holomorphic diffeomorphisms of the Calabi-Yau. In the highly effective fermionic/brane formulation this leads to a free fermion description of the amplitudes. Furthermore we argue that topological strings on Calabi-Yau geometries provide a unifying picture connecting non-critical (super)strings, integrable hierarchies, and various matrix models. In particular we show how the ordinary matrix model, the double scaling limit of matrix models, and Kontsevich-like matrix model are all related and arise from studying branes in specific local Calabi-Yau three-folds. We also show how A-model topological string on P^1 and local toric threefolds (and in particular the topological vertex) can be realized and solved as B-model topological string amplitudes on a Calabi-Yau manifold.

Gravitational corrections in supersymmetric gauge theory and matrix models

Gravitational corrections in N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories are obtained from topological string amplitudes. We show how they are recovered in matrix model computations. This provides a test of the proposal by Dijkgraaf and Vafa beyond the planar limit. Both, matrix model and topological string theory, are used to check a conjecture of Nekrasov concerning these gravitational couplings in Seiberg-Witten theory. Our analysis is performed for those gauge theories which are related to the cubic matrix model, i.e. pure SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory and N=2 U(N) SYM broken to N=1 via a cubic superpotential. We outline the computation of the topological amplitudes for the local Calabi-Yau manifolds which are relevant for these two cases.

Disk Instantons, Mirror Symmetry and the Duality Web

We apply the methods recently developed for computation of type IIA disk instantons using mirror symmetry to a large class of D-branes wrapped over Lagrangian cycles of non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Along the way we clarify the notion of ``flat coordinates'' for the boundary theory. We also discover an integer IR ambiguity needed to define the quantum theory of D-branes wrapped over non-compact Lagrangian submanifolds. In the large $N$ dual Chern-Simons theory, this ambiguity is mapped to the UV choice of the framing of the knot. In a type IIB dual description involving $(p,q)$ 5-branes, disk instantons of type IIA get mapped to $(p,q)$ string instantons. The M-theory lift of these results lead to computation of superpotential terms generated by M2 brane instantons wrapped over 3-cycles of certain manifolds of $G_2$ holonomy.

Fluxes in Heterotic and Type II String Compactifications

In this paper we consider heterotic compactifications on K3 x T2 as well as type II compactifications on K3-fibred Calabi-Yau spaces with certain fluxes for the gauge and RR field strengths F and H turned on. By providing an identification of corresponding fluxes we show that the well-known N=2 heterotic/type II string-string duality still holds for a subset of all possible fluxes, namely those which arise from six-dimensional gauge fields with internal magnetic flux on the common two-sphere P1, which is the base space of the type II K3-fibration. On the other hand, F- and H-fluxes without P1-support, such as heterotic F-fluxes on the torus T2 or type II H-fluxes on cycles of the K3-fibre cannot be matched in any simple way, which is a challenge for heterotic/type II string-string duality. Our analysis is based on the comparison of terms in the effective low-energy heterotic and type II actions which are induced by the fluxes, such as the Green-Schwarz couplings related to flux-induced U(1) anomalies, the effective superpotential and the Fayet-Iliopoulos scalar potential.

Comment on the Generation Number in Orbifold Compactifications

There has been some confusion concerning the number of $(1,1)$-forms in orbifold compactifications of the heterotic string in numerous publications. In this note we point out the relevance of the underlying torus lattice on this number. We answer the question when different lattices mimic the same physics and when this is not the case. As a byproduct we classify all symmetric $Z_N$-orbifolds with $(2,2)$ world sheet supersymmetry obtaining also some new ones.

Considerations of One-Modulus Calabi-Yau Compactifications: Picard-Fuchs Equations, Kähler Potentials and Mirror Maps

We consider Calabi-Yau compactifications with one Kähler modulus. Following the method of Candelas et al. we use the mirror hypothesis to solve the quantum theory exactly in dependence of this modulus by performing the calculation for the corresponding complex structure deformation on the mirror manifold. Here the information is accessible by techniques of classical geometry. It is encoded in the Picard-Fuchs differential equation which has to be supplemented by requirements on the global properties of its solutions.
