Holographic Realization of the Prime Number Quantum Potential

We report the first experimental realization of the prime number quantum potential $V_N(x)$, defined as the potential entering the single-particle Schrödinger Hamiltonian with eigenvalues given by the first $N$ prime numbers. We use holographic optical traps and, in particular, a spatial light modulator to tailor the potential to the desired shape. As a further application, we also implement a potential with lucky numbers, a sequence of integers generated by a different sieve than the familiar Eratosthenes's sieve used for the primes. Our results pave the way towards the realization of quantum potentials with arbitrary sequences of integers as energy levels and show, in perspective, the possibility to set up quantum systems for arithmetic manipulations or mathematical tests involving prime numbers.

The $\hbar\rightarrow 0$ Limit of the Entanglement Entropy

Entangled quantum states share properties that do not have classical analogs, in particular, they show correlations that can violate Bell inequalities. It is therefore an interesting question to see what happens to entanglement measures -- such as the entanglement entropy for a pure state -- taking the semi-classical limit, where the naive expectation is that they may become singular or zero. This conclusion is however incorrect. In this paper, we determine the $\hbar\rightarrow 0$ limit of the bipartite entanglement entropy for a one-dimensional system of $N$ quantum particles in an external potential and we explicitly show that this limit is finite. Moreover, if the particles are fermionic, we show that the $\hbar\rightarrow 0$ limit of the bipartite entanglement entropy coincides with the Shannon entropy of $N$ bits.

Approaching the Self-Dual Point of the Sinh-Gordon model

One of the most striking but mysterious properties of the sinh-Gordon model (ShG) is the $b \rightarrow 1/b$ self-duality of its $S$-matrix, of which there is no trace in its Lagrangian formulation. Here $b$ is the coupling appearing in the model's eponymous hyperbolic cosine present in its Lagrangian, $\cosh(bϕ)$. In this paper we develop truncated spectrum methods (TSMs) for studying the sinh-Gordon model at a finite volume as we vary the coupling constant. We obtain the expected results for $b \ll 1$ and intermediate values of $b$, but as the self-dual point $b=1$ is approached, the basic application of the TSM to the ShG breaks down. We find that the TSM gives results with a strong cutoff $E_c$ dependence, which disappears according only to a very slow power law in $E_c$. Standard renormalization group strategies -- whether they be numerical or analytic -- also fail to improve upon matters here. We thus explore three strategies to address the basic limitations of the TSM in the vicinity of $b=1$. In the first, we focus on the small-volume spectrum. We attempt to understand how much of the physics of the ShG is encoded in the zero mode part of its Hamiltonian, in essence how `quantum mechanical' vs `quantum field theoretic' the problem is. In the second, we identify the divergencies present in perturbation theory and perform their resummation using a supra-Borel approximate. In the third approach, we use the exact form factors of the model to treat the ShG at one value of $b$ as a perturbation of a ShG at a different coupling. In the light of this work, we argue that the strong coupling phase $b > 1$ of the Lagrangian formulation of model may be different from what is naïvely inferred from its $S$-matrix. In particular, we present an argument that the theory is massless for $b>1$.

Dynamics of one-dimensional quantum many-body systems in time-periodic linear potentials

We study a system of one-dimensional interacting quantum particles subjected to a time-periodic potential linear in space. After discussing the cases of driven one- and two-particles systems, we derive the analogous results for the many-particles case in presence of a general interaction two-body potential and the corresponding Floquet Hamiltonian. When the undriven model is integrable, the Floquet Hamitlonian is shown to be integrable too. We determine the micro-motion operator and the expression for a generic time evolved state of the system. We discuss various aspects of the dynamics of the system both at stroboscopic and intermediate times, in particular the motion of the center of mass of a generic wavepacket and its spreading over time. We also discuss the case of accelerated motion of the center of mass, obtained when the integral of the coeffcient strenght of the linear potential on a time period is non-vanishing, and we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian gets in this case an additional static linear potential. We also discuss the application of the obtained results to the Lieb-Liniger model.

Exact out-of-equilibrium steady states in the semiclassical limit of the interacting Bose gas

We study the out-of-equilibrium properties of a classical integrable non-relativistic theory, with a time evolution initially prepared with a finite energy density in the thermodynamic limit. The theory considered here is the Non-Linear Schrodinger equation which describes the dynamics of the one-dimensional interacting Bose gas in the regime of high occupation numbers. The main emphasis is on the determination of the late-time Generalised Gibbs Ensemble (GGE), which can be efficiently semi-numerically computed on arbitrary initial states, completely solving the famous quench problem in the classical regime. We take advantage of known results in the quantum model and the semiclassical limit to achieve new exact results for the momenta of the density operator on arbitrary GGEs, which we successfully compare with ab-initio numerical simulations. Furthermore, we determine the whole probability distribution of the density operator (full counting statistics), whose exact expression is still out of reach in the quantum model.

Bound States of Majorana Fermions in Semi-classical Approximation

We derive a semi-classical formula for computing the spectrum of bound states made of Majorana fermions in a generic non-integrable 2d quantum field theory with a set of degenerate vacua. We illustrate the application of the formula in a series of cases, including an asymmetric well potential where the spectra of bosons and fermions may have some curious features. We also discuss the merging of fermionic and bosonic spectra in the presence of supersymmetry. Finally, we use the semi-classical formula to analyse the evolution of the particle spectra in a class of non-integrable supersymmetry models.

Quench Dynamics in Two-Dimensional Integrable SUSY Models

We analyse quench processes in two dimensional quantum field theories with infinite number of conservation laws which also include fermionic charges that close a $N=1$ supersymmetric algebra. While in general the quench protocol induces a breaking of supersymmetry, we show that there are particular initial states which ensure the persistence of supersymmetry also for the dynamics out of equilibrium. We discuss the conditions that identify such states and, as application, we present the significant cases of the Tricritical Ising Model and the Sine-Gordon model at its supersymmetric point. We also address the issue of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in the presence of fermionic conserved charges.

Boundary State in an Integrable Quantum Field Theory Out of Equilibrium

We study a quantum quench of the mass and the interaction in the Sinh-Gordon model starting from a large initial mass and zero initial coupling. Our focus is on the determination of the expansion of the initial state in terms of post-quench excitations. We argue that the large energy profile of the involved excitations can be relevant for the late time behaviour of the system and common regularization schemes are unreliable. We therefore proceed in determining the initial state by first principles expanding it in a systematic and controllable fashion on the basis of the asymptotic states. Our results show that, for the special limit of pre-quench parameters we consider, it assumes a squeezed state form that has been shown to evolve so as to exhibit the equilibrium behaviour predicted by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble.

Energy-pressure relation for low-dimensional gases

A particularly simple relation of proportionality between internal energy and pressure holds for scale invariant thermodynamic systems, including classical and quantum Bose and Fermi ideal gases. One can quantify the deviation from such a relation by introducing the internal energy shift as the difference between the internal energy of the system and the corresponding value for scale invariant gases. We discuss general thermodynamic properties associated to the scale invariance, provide criteria for which the internal energy shift density is a bounded function of temperature. We then study the internal energy shift and deviations from the energy-pressure proportionality in low dimensional models of gases interpolating between the ideal Bose and the ideal Fermi gases, focusing on the Lieb-Liniger model in 1d and on the anyonic gas in 2d. In 1d the internal energy shift is determined from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz integral equations and an explicit relation for it is given at high temperature. Our results show that the internal energy shift is positive, it vanishes in the two limits of zero and infinite coupling (respectively the ideal Bose and the Tonks Girardeau gas) and it has a maximum at a finite, temperature depending, value of the coupling. Remarkably, at fixed coupling the energy shift density saturates to a finite value for infinite temperature. In 2d we consider systems of Abelian anyons and non Abelian Chern-Simons particles: as it can be seen also directly from a study of the virial coefficients, in the usually considered hard-core limit the internal energy shift vanishes and the energy is just proportional to the pressure, with the proportionality constant being simply the area of the system. Soft-core boundary conditions at coincident points for the two-body wavefunction introduce a length scale, and induce a non-vanishing internal energy shift.

Truncated Conformal Space Approach for 2D Landau-Ginzburg Theories

We study the spectrum of Landau-Ginzburg theories in 1+1 dimensions using the truncated conformal space approach employing a compactified boson. We study these theories both in their broken and unbroken phases. We first demonstrate that we can reproduce the expected spectrum of a $Φ^2$ theory (i.e. a free massive boson) in this framework. We then turn to $Φ^4$ in its unbroken phase and compare our numerical results with the predictions of two-loop perturbation theory, finding excellent agreement. We then analyze the broken phase of $Φ^4$ where kink excitations together with their bound states are present. We confirm the semiclassical predictions for this model on the number of stable kink-antikink bound states. We also test the semiclassics in the double well phase of $Φ^6$ Landau-Ginzburg theory, again finding agreement.

Expectation Values of Local Fields in an Integrable Theory after a Quantum Quench

The expectation values of local fields of any interacting quantum theory after a quench process are key quantities for matching theoretical and experimental results. For quantum integrable field theories, we argue that they can be obtained by a generalization of the Leclair-Mussardo formula and a Bethe Ansatz result of Caux and Konik. Specializing to the Sinh-Gordon model and taking the non-relativistic limit, one can recover the results of Kormos et al. for the Lieb-Liniger model.

Infinite-time Average of Local Fields in an Integrable Quantum Field Theory after a Quantum Quench

The infinite-time average of the expectation values of local fields of any interacting quantum theory after a global quench process are key quantities for matching theoretical and experimental results. For quantum integrable field theories, we show that they can be obtained by an ensemble average that employs a particular limit of the Form Factors of local fields and quantities extracted by the Generalized Bethe Ansatz.

Statistical Mechanics of an Ideal Gas of Non-Abelian Anyons

We study the thermodynamical properties of an ideal gas of non-Abelian Chern-Simons particles and we compute the second virial coefficient, considering the effect of general soft-core boundary conditions for the two-body wavefunction at zero distance. The behaviour of the second virial coefficient is studied as a function of the Chern-Simons coupling, the isospin quantum number and the hard-coreness parameters. Expressions for the main thermodynamical quantities at the lower order of the virial expansion are also obtained: we find that at this order the relation between the internal energy and the pressure is the same found (exactly) for 2D Bose and Fermi ideal gases. A discussion of the comparison of obtained findings with available results in literature for systems of hard-core non-Abelian Chern-Simons particles is also supplied.

Statistical Interparticle Potential of an Ideal Gas of Non-Abelian Anyons

We determine and study the statistical interparticle potential of an ideal system of non-Abelian Chern-Simons (NACS) particles, comparing our results with the corresponding results of an ideal gas of Abelian anyons. In the Abelian case, the statistical potential depends on the statistical parameter and it has a "quasi-bosonic" behaviour for statistical parameter in the range (0,1/2) (non-monotonic with a minimum) and a "quasi-fermionic" behaviour for statistical parameter in the range (1/2,1) (monotonically decreasing without a minimum). In the non-Abelian case the behavior of the statistical potential depends on the Chern- Simons coupling and the isospin quantum number: as a function of these two parameters, a phase diagram with quasi-bosonic, quasi-fermionic and bosonic-like regions is obtained and investigated. Finally, using the obtained expression for the statistical potential, we compute the second virial coefficient of the NACS gas, which correctly reproduces the results available in literature.

Zamolodchikov-Faddeev Algebra and Quantum Quenches in Integrable Field Theories

We analyze quantum quenches in integrable models and in particular the determination of the initial state in the basis of eigenstates of the post-quench hamiltonian. This leads us to consider the set of transformations of creation and annihilation operators that respect the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebra satisfied by integrable models. We establish that the Bogoliubov transformations hold only in the case of quantum quenches in free theories. In the most general case of interacting theories, we identify two classes of transformations. The first class induces a change in the S-matrix of the theory but not of its ground state, whereas the second class results in a "dressing" of the operators. As examples of our approach we consider the transformations associated with a change of the interaction in the Sinh-Gordon and the Lieb-Liniger model.

Integrability, Non-integrability and confinement

We discuss the main features of quantum integrable models taking the classes of universality of the Ising model and the repulsive Lieb-Liniger model as paradigmatic examples. We address the breaking of integrability by means of two approaches, the Form Factor Perturbation Theory and semiclassical methods. Each of them has its own advantage. Using the first approach, one can relate the confinement phenomena of topological excitations to the semi-locality of the operator which breaks integrability. Using the second approach, one can control the bound states which arise in each phase of the theory and predict that their number cannot be more than two.

Long time dynamics following a quench in an integrable quantum spin chain: local versus non-local operators and effective thermal behavior

We study the dynamics of the quantum Ising chain following a zero-temperature quench of the transverse field strength. Focusing on the behavior of two-point spin correlation functions, we show that the correlators of the order parameter display an effective asymptotic thermal behavior, i.e., they decay exponentially to zero, with a phase coherence rate and a correlation length dictated by the equilibrium law with an effective temperature set by the energy of the initial state. On the contrary, the two-point correlation functions of the transverse magnetization or the density-of-kinks operator decay as a power-law and do not exhibit thermal behavior. We argue that the different behavior is linked to the locality of the corresponding operator with respect to the quasi-particles of the model: non-local operators, such as the order parameter, behave thermally, while local ones do not. We study which features of the two-point correlators are a consequence of the integrability of the model by analizing their robustness with respect to a sufficiently strong integrability-breaking term.

Quantum hashing with the icosahedral group

We study an efficient algorithm to hash any single qubit gate (or unitary matrix) into a braid of Fibonacci anyons represented by a product of icosahedral group elements. By representing the group elements by braid segments of different lengths, we introduce a series of pseudo-groups. Joining these braid segments in a renormalization group fashion, we obtain a Gaussian unitary ensemble of random-matrix representations of braids. With braids of length O[log(1/epsilon)], we can approximate all SU(2) matrices to an average error epsilon with a cost of O[log(1/epsilon)] in time. The algorithm is applicable to generic quantum compiling.

Quantum Quenches in Integrable Field Theories

We study the non equilibrium time evolution of an integrable field theory in 1+1 dimensions after a sudden variation of a global parameter of the Hamiltonian. For a class of quenches defined in the text, we compute the long times limit of the one point function of a local operator as a series of form factors. Even if some subtleties force us to handle this result with care, there is a strong evidence that for long times the expectation value of any local operator can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble with a different effective temperature for each eigenmode.

Topological Quantum Gate Construction by Iterative Pseudogroup Hashing

We describe the hashing technique to obtain a fast approximation of a target quantum gate in the unitary group SU(2) represented by a product of the elements of a universal basis. The hashing exploits the structure of the icosahedral group [or other finite subgroups of SU(2)] and its pseudogroup approximations to reduce the search within a small number of elements. One of the main advantages of the pseudogroup hashing is the possibility to iterate to obtain more accurate representations of the targets in the spirit of the renormalization group approach. We describe the iterative pseudogroup hashing algorithm using the universal basis given by the braidings of Fibonacci anyons. The analysis of the efficiency of the iterations based on the random matrix theory indicates that the runtime and the braid length scale poly-logarithmically with the final error, comparing favorably to the Solovay-Kitaev algorithm.

Analytic properties of the free energy: the tricritical Ising model

We investigate the tricritical Ising model in complex magnetic field in order to characterize the analytic structure of its free energy. By supplementing analytic methods with the truncation of conformal space technique we obtain nonperturbative data even if the field theories we consider are not integrable. The existence of edge singularities analogous to the Lee-Yang points in the Ising field theory is confirmed. A surprising result, due to the conformal dimensions of the operators involved, is the appearance of two branching points which seems appealing to identify with a pair of complex conjugate spinodal singularities.
