Minimax formula for the replica symmetric free energy of deep restricted Boltzmann machines

We study the free energy of a most used deep architecture for restricted Boltzmann machines, where the layers are disposed in series. Assuming independent Gaussian distributed random weights, we show that the error term in the so-called replica symmetric sum rule can be optimised as a saddle point. This leads us to conjecture that in the replica symmetric approximation the free energy is given by a min max formula, which parallels the one achieved for two-layer case.

Quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures for the periodic Benjamin-Ono-BBM equation

The BBM equation is a Hamiltonian PDE which revealed to be a very interesting test-model to study the transformation property of Gaussian measures along the flow. In this paper we study the BBM equation with critical dispersion (which is a Benjamin-Ono type model). We prove that the image of the Gaussian measures supported on fractional Sobolev spaces of increasing regularity are absolutely continuous, but we cannot identify the density, for which new ideas are needed.

Transport of Gaussian measures with exponential cut-off for Hamiltonian PDEs

We show that introducing an exponential cut-off on a suitable Sobolev norm facilitates the proof of quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures with respect to Hamiltonian PDE flows and allows us to establish the exact Jacobi formula for the density. We exploit this idea in two different contexts, namely the periodic fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation with dispersion~$γ>1$ and the periodic one dimensional quintic defocussing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). For the BBM equation we study the transport of the cut-off Gaussian measures on fractional Sobolev spaces, while for the NLS equation we study the measures based on the modified energies introduced by Planchon-Visciglia and the third author. Moreover for the BBM equation we also show almost sure global well-posedness for data in~$C^\a(\T)$ for arbitrarily small~$\a>0$ and invariance of the Gaussian measure associated with the $H^{γ/2}(\T)$ norm.

Quasi-invariance of low regularity Gaussian measures under the gauge map of the periodic derivative NLS

The periodic DNLS gauge is an anticipative map with singular generator which revealed crucial in the study of the periodic derivative NLS. We prove quasi-invariance of the Gaussian measure on $L^2(\T)$ with covariance $[1+(-\D)^{s}]^{-1}$ under these transformations for any $s>\frac12$. This extends previous achievements by Nahmod, Ray-Bellet, Sheffield and Staffilani (2011) and Genovese, Lucà and Valeri (2018), who proved the result for integer values of the regularity parameter $s$.

Gibbs measures associated to the integrals of motion of the periodic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We study the one dimensional periodic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation. This is known to be a completely integrable system, in the sense that there is an infinite sequence of formal integrals of motion $\int h_k$, $k\in \mathbb{Z}_{+}$. In each $\int h_{2k}$ the term with the highest regularity involves the Sobolev norm $\dot H^{k}(\mathbb{T})$ of the solution of the DNLS equation. We show that a functional measure on $L^2(\mathbb{T})$, absolutely continuous w.r.t. the Gaussian measure with covariance $(\mathbb{I}+(-Δ)^{k})^{-1}$, is associated to each integral of motion $\int h_{2k}$, $k\geq1$.

Non-Convex Multipartite Ferromagnets

We investigate a multipartite ferromagnetic model without self-interactions between spins of the same party, so that the Hamiltonian is not a definite quadratic form of the magnetisations. We find the free energy and study the phase transition for all zero external fields. Moreover in the bipartite case we analyse the fluctuations of the rescaled magnetisations, below and at the critical point, and we study the phase transitions with non zero magnetic fields.

Legendre Duality of Spherical and Gaussian Spin Glasses

The classical result of concentration of the Gaussian measure on the sphere in the limit of large dimension induces a natural duality between Gaussian and spherical models of spin glass. We analyse the Legendre variational structure linking the free energies of these two systems, in the spirit of the equivalence of ensembles of statistical mechanics. Our analysis, combined with the previous work [4], shows that such models are replica symmetric. Lastly, we briefly discuss an application of our result to the study of the Gaussian Hopfield model.

On the stationary BBGKY hierarchy for equilibrium states

A new direct integration method is established to construct the solutions of the stationary BBGKY hierarchy, assuming the usual form of the equilibrium correlation functions, for infinite classical systems of particles interacting via a smooth, stable and regular two body potential. The equivalence between the corresponding infinite hierarchy and the Kirkwood--Salsburg equations is proved. A problem of existence and uniqueness of the solutions of the hierarchy with appropriate boundary conditions is thus solved for low densities. The result is extended in a milder sense to systems with a hard core interaction. Comparisons are provided with different integration techniques.

A Solvable Mean Field Model of a Gaussian Spin Glass

We introduce a mean field spin glass model with gaussian distribuited spins and pairwise interactions, whose couplings are drawn randomly from a normal gaussian distribution too. We completely control the main thermodynamical properties of the model (free energy, phase diagram, fluctuations theory) in the whole phase space. In particular we prove that in thermodynamic limit the free energy equals its replica symmetric expression.

How glassy are neural networks?

In this paper we continue our investigation on the high storage regime of a neural network with Gaussian patterns. Through an exact mapping between its partition function and one of a bipartite spin glass (whose parties consist of Ising and Gaussian spins respectively), we give a complete control of the whole annealed region. The strategy explored is based on an interpolation between the bipartite system and two independent spin glasses built respectively by dichotomic and Gaussian spins: Critical line, behavior of the principal thermodynamic observables and their fluctuations as well as overlap fluctuations are obtained and discussed. Then, we move further, extending such an equivalence beyond the critical line, to explore the broken ergodicity phase under the assumption of replica symmetry and we show that the quenched free energy of this (analogical) Hopfield model can be described as a linear combination of the two quenched spin-glass free energies even in the replica symmetric framework.

Universality in bipartite mean field spin glasses

In this work we give a proof of universality with respect to the choice of the statistical distribution of the quenched noise, for mean field bipartite spin glasses. We use mainly techniques of spin glasses theory, as Guerra's interpolation and the cavity approach. As a direct conseguence of our results, we have a proof of convergence in the sup norm of the free energy of the Hopfield Model to its expectation value.

Equilibrium statistical mechanics of bipartite spin systems

Aim of this paper is to give an extensive treatment of bipartite mean field spin systems, ordered and disordered: at first, bipartite ferromagnets are investigated, achieving an explicit expression for the free energy trough a new minimax variational principle. Furthermore via the Hamilton-Jacobi technique the same free energy structure is obtained together with the existence of its thermodynamic limit and the minimax principle is connected to a standard max one. The same is investigated for bipartite spin-glasses: By the Borel-Cantelli lemma a control of the high temperature regime is obtained, while via the double stochastic stability technique we get also the explicit expression of the free energy at the replica symmetric level, uniquely defined by a minimax variational principle again. A general results that states that the free energies of these systems are convex linear combinations of their independent one party model counterparts is achieved too. For the sake of completeness we show further that at zero temperature the replica symmetric entropy becomes negative and, consequently, such a symmetry must be broken. The treatment of the fully broken replica symmetry case is deferred to a forthcoming paper. As a first step in this direction, we start deriving the linear and quadratic constraints to overlap fluctuations.

Planck-scale modifications to Electrodynamics characterized by a space-like symmetry-breaking vector

In the study of Planck-scale ("quantum-gravity induced") violations of Lorentz symmetry, an important role was played by the deformed-electrodynamics model introduced by Myers and Pospelov. Its reliance on conventional effective quantum field theory, and its description of symmetry-violation effects simply in terms of a four-vector with nonzero component only in the time-direction, rendered it an ideal target for experimentalists and a natural concept-testing ground for many theorists. At this point however the experimental limits on the single Myers-Pospelov parameter, after improving steadily over these past few years, are "super-Planckian", {\it i.e.} they take the model out of actual interest from a conventional quantum-gravity perspective. In light of this we here argue that it may be appropriate to move on to the next level of complexity, still with vectorial symmetry violation but adopting a generic four-vector. We also offer a preliminary characterization of the phenomenology of this more general framework, sufficient to expose a rather significant increase in complexity with respect to the original Myers-Pospelov setup. Most of these novel features are linked to the presence of spatial anisotropy, which is particularly pronounced when the symmetry-breaking vector is space-like, and they are such that they reduce the bound-setting power of certain types of observations in astrophysics.

A mechanical approach to mean field spin models

Inspired by the bridge pioneered by Guerra among statistical mechanics on lattice and analytical mechanics on 1+1 continuous Euclidean space-time, we built a self-consistent method to solve for the thermodynamics of mean-field models defined on lattice, whose order parameters self average. We show the whole procedure by analyzing in full details the simplest test case, namely the Curie-Weiss model. Further we report some applications also to models whose order parameters do not self-average, by using the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass as a guide.

The replica symmetric behavior of the analogical neural network

In this paper we continue our investigation of the analogical neural network, paying interest to its replica symmetric behavior in the absence of external fields of any type. Bridging the neural network to a bipartite spin-glass, we introduce and apply a new interpolation scheme to its free energy that naturally extends the interpolation via cavity fields or stochastic perturbations to these models. As a result we obtain the free energy of the system as a sum rule, which, at least at the replica symmetric level, can be solved exactly. As a next step we study its related self-consistent equations for the order parameters and their rescaled fluctuations, found to diverge on the same critical line of the standard Amit-Gutfreund-Sompolinsky theory.
