An accurate evaluation of electron (anti-)neutrino scattering on nucleons

We discuss as accurately as possible the cross section of quasi-elastic scattering of electron (anti-)neutrinos on nucleons, also known as inverse beta decay in the case of antineutrinos. We focus on the moderate energy range from a few MeV up to hundreds of MeV, which includes neutrinos from reactors and supernovae. We assess the uncertainty on the cross section, which is relevant to experimental advances and increasingly large statistical samples. We estimate the effects of second-class currents, showing that they are small and negligible for current applications.

Interpreting B-anomalies within an extended 331 gauge theory

In light of the recent $R_{K^{(*)}}$ data on neutral current flavour anomalies in $B \to K^{(*)} \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays, we re-examine their quantitative interpretation in terms of an extended 331 gauge theory framework. We achieve this by adding two extra lepton species with novel 331 charges, while ensuring that the model remains anomaly free. In contrast to the canonical 331 models, the gauge charges of the first and second lepton families differ from each other, allowing lepton flavour universality violation. We further expand the model by adding the neutral fermions required to provide an adequate description for small neutrino masses.

Exotic see-saw mechanism for neutrinos and leptogenesis in a Pati-Salam model

We discuss non-perturbative corrections to the neutrino sector, in the context of a D-brane Pati-Salam-like model, that can be obtained as a simple alternative to $SO(10)$ GUT's in theories with open and unoriented strings. In such D-brane models, exotic stringy instantons can correct the right-handed neutrino mass matrix in a calculable way, thus affecting mass hierarchies and modifying the see-saw mechanism to what we name exotic see-saw. For a wide range of parameters, a compact spectrum of right-handed neutrino masses can occur that gives rise to a predictive scenario for low energy observables. This model also provides a viable mechanism for Baryon Asymmetry in the Universe (BAU) through leptogenesis. Finally, a Majorana mass for the neutron is naturally predicted in the model, leading to potentially testable neutron-antineutron oscillations. Combined measurements in neutrino and neutron-antineutron sectors could provide precious informations on physics at the quantum gravity scale.

Universal Lie Formulas for Higher Antibrackets

We prove that the hierarchy of higher antibrackets (aka higher Koszul brackets, aka Koszul braces) of a linear operator $Δ$ on a commutative superalgebra can be defined by some universal formulas involving iterated Nijenhuis-Richardson brackets having as arguments $Δ$ and the multiplication operators. As a byproduct, we can immediately extend higher antibrackets to noncommutative algebras in a way preserving the validity of generalized Jacobi identities.

Effective field theory from modified gravity with massive modes

Massive gravitational modes in effective field theories can be recovered by extending General Relativity and taking into account generic functions of the curvature invariants, not necessarily linear in the Ricci scalar R. In particular, adopting the minimal extension of f(R) gravity, an effective field theory with massive modes is straightforwardly recovered. This approach allows to evade shortcomings like ghosts and discontinuities if a suitable choice of expansion parameters is performed.

Flavour, Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Dark Matter: state of the art and future prospects

With the discovery of the Higgs boson the Standard Model has become a complete and comprehensive theory, which has been verified with unparalleled precision and in principle might be valid at all scales. However, several reasons remain why we firmly believe that there should be physics beyond the Standard Model. Experiments such as the LHC, new $B$ factories, and earth- and space-based astro-particle experiments provide us with unique opportunities to discover a coherent framework for many of the long-standing puzzles of our field. Here we explore several significant interconnections between the physics of the Higgs boson, the physics of flavour, and the experimental clues we have about dark matter.

eta - eta prime Mixing -From electromagnetic transitions to weak decays of charm and beauty hadrons

It has been realized for a long time that knowing the eta and eta^prime wave functions in terms of quark and gluon components probes our understanding of non-perturbative QCD dynamics. Great effort has been given to this challenge -- yet no clear picture has emerged even with the most recent KLOE data. We point out which measurements would be most helpful in arriving at a more definite conclusion. A better knowledge of these wave functions will significantly help to disentangle the weight of different decay subprocesses in semi-leptonic decays of D+, Ds^+ and B+ mesons. The resulting insights will be instrumental in treating even non-leptonic B transitions involving eta and eta^prime and their CP asymmetries; thus they can sharpen the case for or against New Physics intervening there.

Squeezing out predictions with leptogenesis from SO(10)

We consider the see-saw mechanism within a non-supersymmetric SO(10) model. By assuming the SO(10) quark-lepton symmetry, and after imposing suitable conditions that ensure that the right-handed (RH) neutrino masses are at most mildly hierarchical (compact RH spectrum) we obtain a surprisingly predictive scenario. The absolute neutrino mass scale, the Dirac and the two Majorana phases of the neutrino mixing matrix remain determined in terms of the set of already measured low energy observables, modulo a discrete ambiguity in the signs of two neutrino mixing angles and of the Dirac phase. The RH neutrinos mass spectrum is also predicted, as well as the size and sign of the leptogenesis CP asymmetries. We compute the cosmological baryon asymmetry generated through leptogenesis and obtain the correct sign and a size compatible with observations.

Anatomy of $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψf_0(980)$

The $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$ decay offers an interesting experimental alternative to the well-known $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ channel for the search of CP-violating New-Physics contributions to $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing. As the hadronic structure of the $f_0(980)$ has not yet been settled, we take a critical look at the implications for the relevant observables and address recent experimental data. It turns out that the effective lifetime of $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$ and its mixing-induced CP asymmetry $S$ are quite robust with respect to hadronic effects and thereby allow us to search for a large CP-violating $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing phase $ϕ_s$, which is tiny in the Standard Model. However, should small CP violation, i.e. in the range $-0.1\lsim S\lsim 0$, be found in $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$, it will be crucial to constrain hadronic corrections in order to distinguish possible New-Physics effects from the Standard Model. We point out that $B^0_d\to J/ψf_0(980)$, which has not yet been measured, is a key channel in this respect and discuss the physics potential of this decay.

Exploring CP Violation and $η$-$η'$ Mixing with the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ Systems

The $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ decays provide new terrain for exploring CP violation. After briefly discussing $η$-$η'$ mixing, we analyse the effective lifetimes and CP-violating observables of the $B_s$ channels, which allow us to probe New-Physics effects in $B^0_s$-$\bar B^0_s$ mixing. We have a critical look at these observables and show how hadronic corrections can be controlled by means of the $B_d$ decays. Using measurements of the $B^0_{s,d}\to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ branching ratios by the Belle collaboration, we discuss tests of the $SU(3)_F$ flavour symmetry of strong interactions, obtain the first constraints on the hadronic parameters entering the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη$ system, and predict the $B^0_d\to J/ψη'$ branching ratio at the $5\times10^{-6}$ level. Furthermore, we present strategies for the determination of the $η$-$η'$ mixing parameters from the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ observables. We also observe that the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη$ and $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη'$ decays are - from a formal point of view - analogous to the quark-antiquark and tetraquark descriptions of the $f_0(980)$ in the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψf_0(980)$ channels, respectively.

A model for next-to-leading order threshold resummed form factors

We present a model for next-to-leading order resummed threshold form factors based on a time-like coupling recently introduced in the framework of small x physics. Improved expressions for the form factors in N-space are obtained which are not plagued by Landau-pole singularities, as the included absorptive effects -- usually neglected -- act as regulators. The physical reason is that, because of faster decay of gluon jets, there is not enough resolution time to observe the Landau pole. Our form factors reduce to the standard ones when the absorptive parts related to the coupling are neglected. The inverse transform from N-space to x-space can be done directly without any prescription and we obtain analytical expressions for the form factors, which are well defined in all x-space.

Light masses in short distance penguin loops

Penguin diagrams for decays such as $b\to (s,d)γ$ involve virtual loops of $u$ or other light quarks. Logarithms of the virtual quark mass could, in principle, influence the phenomenological analysis of the decay. It is thus important to study these logarithms to all orders in QCD perturbation theory. In this paper we show that, at arbitrary order, the matrix elements of operators in the effective hamiltonian contributing to $b\to sγ$ are finite for the limit of $m_u \to 0$ in penguin loops.

QCD corrections to b -> s gamma gamma induced decays: B -> X_s gamma gamma and B_s -> gamma gamma

We present a complete calculation of the Leading Order QCD corrections to the quark level decay amplitude for b -> s gamma gamma and study their relevance for both the inclusive branching ratio BR(B -> X_s gamma gamma) and for the exclusive decay channel B_s -> gamma gamma. In addition to the uncertainties in the short distance calculation, due to the choice of the renormalization scale, an appreciable uncertainty in both B_s -> gamma gamma and B -> X_s gamma gamma is introduced by the matrix element calculation. We also briefly discuss some long distance effects, especially those due to the eta_c resonance for the inclusive rate. Finally, the analysis of the IR singularities of the two photon spectrum in the inclusive case is given.

Short and Long Distance Interplay in Inclusive $ B \to X_d γ$ Decays

We analyze the short and long distance contributions to inclusive $B \rightarrow X_d γ$ decay, paying particular attention to the dependence on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa parameter $V_{td}$. We discuss penguin diagrams with internal $u$ and $c$ quarks in the framework of the effective field theory. We also estimate the size of possible long range contributions by using vector meson dominance.
