A parametrization of sheets of conjugacy classes in bad characteristic

Let G be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over an algebraically closed field of bad characteristic. We show that its sheets of conjugacy classes are parametrized by G-conjugacy classes of pairs (M,O) where M is the identity component of the centralizer of a semisimple element in G and O is a rigid unipotent conjugacy class in M, in analogy with the good characteristic case.

Non-existence of integral Hopf orders for twists of several simple groups of Lie type

Let $p$ be a prime number and $q=p^m$, with $m \geq 1$ if $p \neq 2,3$ and $m>1$ otherwise. Let $Ω$ be any non-trivial twist for the complex group algebra of $\mathbf{PSL}_2(q)$ arising from a $2$-cocycle on an abelian subgroup of $\mathbf{PSL}_2(q)$. We show that the twisted Hopf algebra $(\mathbb{C} \mathbf{PSL}_2(q))_Ω$ does not admit a Hopf order over any number ring. The same conclusion is proved for the Suzuki groups, and for $\mathbf{SL}_3(p)$ when the twist stems from an abelian $p$-subgroup. This supplies new families of complex semisimple (and simple) Hopf algebras that do not admit a Hopf order over any number ring. The strategy of the proof is formulated in a general framework that includes the finite simple groups of Lie type. As an application, we combine our results with two theorems of Thompson and Barry and Ward on minimal simple groups to establish that for any finite non-abelian simple group $G$ there is a twist $Ω$ for $\mathbb{C} G$, arising from a $2$-cocycle on an abelian subgroup of $G$, such that $(\mathbb{C} G)_Ω$ does not admit a Hopf order over any number ring. This partially answers in the negative a question posed by Meir and the second author.

Lusztig's strata are locally closed

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k. We consider the strata in G defined by Lusztig as fibers of a map given in terms truncated induction of Springer representations. We extend to arbitrary characteristic the following two results: Lusztig's strata are locally closed and the irreducible components of a stratum X are those sheets for the G-action on itself that are contained in X.

Quotients for sheets of conjugacy classes

We provide a description of the orbit space of a sheet S for the conjugation action of a complex simple simply connected algebraic group G. This is obtained by means of a bijection between S/G and the quotient of a shifted torus modulo the action of a subgroup of the Weyl group and it is the group analogue of a result due to Borho and Kraft. We also describe the normalisation of the categorical quotient \overline{S}//G for arbitrary simple G and give a necessary and sufficient condition for S//G to be normal in analogy to results of Borho, Kraft and Richardson. The example of G_2 is worked out in detail.

$θ$-semisimple twisted conjugacy classes of type D in $\operatorname{PSL}_n(q)$

Let $p$ be an odd prime, $m\in {\mathbb N}$ and set $q=p^m$, $G=\operatorname{PSL}_n(q)$. Let $θ$ be a standard graph automorphism of $G$, $d$ be a diagonal automorphism and $\operatorname{Fr}_q$ be the Frobenius endomorphism of $\operatorname{PSL}_n(\overline{{\mathbb F}_q})$. We show that every $(d\circ θ)$-conjugacy class of a $(d\circ θ,p)$-regular element in $G$ is represented in some $\operatorname{Fr}_q$-stable maximal torus and that most of them are of type D. We write out the possible exceptions and show that, in particular, if $n\geq5$ is either odd or a multiple of $4$ and $q>7$, then all such classes are of type D. We develop general arguments to deal with twisted classes in finite groups.

A Katsylo theorem for sheets of spherical conjugacy classes

We show that, for a sheet or a Lusztig stratum S containing spherical conjugacy classes in a connected reductive algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field in good characteristic, the orbit space S/G is isomorphic to the quotient of an affine subvariety of G modulo the action of a finite abelian 2-group. The affine subvariety is a closed subset of a Bruhat double coset and the abelian group is a finite subgroup of a maximal torus of G. We show that sheets of spherical conjugacy classes in a simple group are always smooth and we list which strata containing spherical classes are smooth.

Finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras over finite simple groups of Lie type II. Unipotent classes in symplectic groups

We show that Nichols algebras of most simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the projective symplectic linear group over a finite field, corresponding to unipotent orbits, have infinite dimension. We give a criterium to deal with unipotent classes of general finite simple groups of Lie type and apply it to regular classes

On Lusztig's map for spherical unipotent conjugacy classes

We provide an alternative description of the restriction to spherical unipotent conjugacy classes, of Lusztig's map Psi from the set of unipotent conjugacy classes in a connected reductive algebraic group to the set of conjugacy classes of its Weyl group. For irreducible root systems, we analyze the image of this restricted map and we prove that a conjugacy class in a finite Weyl group has a unique maximal length element if and only if it has a maximum.

Induced conjugacy classes and induced U_e(G)-modules

By work of De Concini, Kac and Procesi the irreducible representations of the non-restricted specialization of the quantized enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra g at the roots of unity are parametrized by the conjugacy classes of a group G with Lie(G)=g. We show that there is a natural dimension preserving bijection between the sets of irreducible representations associated with conjugacy classes lying in the same Jordan class (decomposition class). We conjecture a relation for representations associated with classes lying in the same sheet of G, providing two alternative formulations. We underline some evidence and illustrate potential consequences.

On spherical twisted conjugacy classes

Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of good odd characteristic, and let theta be an automorphism of G arising from an involution of its Dynkin diagram. We show that the spherical theta-twisted conjugacy classes are precisely those intersecting only Bruhat cells corresponding to twisted involutions in the Weyl group. We show how the analogue of this statement fails in the triality case. We generalize to good odd characteristic J-H. Lu's dimension formula for spherical twisted conjugacy classes.

On sheets of conjugacy classes in good characteristic

We show that the sheets for a connected reductive algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field in good characteristic acting on itself by conjugation are in bijection with G-conjugacy classes of triples (M, Z(M)^\circ t, O) where M is the connected centralizer of a semisimple element in G, Z(M)^\circ t is a suitable coset in Z(M)/Z(M)^\circ and O is a rigid unipotent conjugacy class in M. Any semisimple element is contained in a unique sheet S and S corresponds to a triple with O={1}. The sheets in G containing a unipotent conjugacy class are precisely those corresponding to triples for which M is a Levi subgroup of a parabolic subgroup of G and such a class is unique.

On the q-convolution on the line

I continue the investigation of a q-analogue of the convolution on the line started in a joint work with Koornwinder and based on a formal definition due to Kempf and Majid. Two different ways of approximating functions by means of the convolution and convolution of delta functions are introduced. A new family of functions that forms an increasing chain of algebras depending on a parameter s>0 is constructed. The value of the parameter for which the mentioned algebras are well behaved, commutative and unital is found. In particular a privileged algebra of functions belonging to the above family is shown to be the quotient of an algebra studied in the previous article modulo the kernel of a q-analogue of the Fourier transform. This result has an analytic interpretation in terms of analytic functions whose q-moments have a particular behaviour. The same result makes it possible to extend results on invertibility of the q-Fourier transform due to Koornwinder. A few results on invertibility of functions with respect to the q-convolution are also obtained and they are related to solving certain simple linear q-difference equations with polynomial coefficients.
