Kinodynamic control systems and discontinuities in clearance

We investigate the structure of discontinuities in clearance (or minimum time) functions for nonlinear control systems with general, closed obstacles (or targets). We establish general results regarding interactions between admissible trajectories and clearance discontinuities: e.g. instantaneous increases in clearance when passing through a discontinuity, and propagation of discontinuity along optimal trajectories. Then, investigating sufficient conditions for discontinuities, we explore a common directionality condition for velocities at a point, characterized by strict positivity of the minimal Hamiltonian. Elementary consequences of this common directionality assumption are explored before demonstrating how, in concert with corresponding obstacle configurations, it gives rise to clearance discontinuities both on the surface of the obstacle and propagating out into free space. Minimal assumptions are made on the topological structure of obstacle sets.

On the flow of non-axisymmetric perturbations of cylinders via surface diffusion

We study the surface diffusion flow acting on a class of general (non--axisymmetric) perturbations of cylinders $\mathcal{C}_r$ in ${\rm I \! R}^3$. Using tools from parabolic theory on uniformly regular manifolds, and maximal regularity, we establish existence and uniqueness of solutions to surface diffusion flow starting from (spatially--unbounded) surfaces defined over $\mathcal{C}_r$ via scalar height functions which are uniformly bounded away from the central cylindrical axis. Additionally, we show that $\mathcal{C}_r$ is normally stable with respect to $2 π$--axially--periodic perturbations if the radius $r > 1$,and unstable if $0 < r < 1$. Stability is also shown to hold in settings with axial Neumann boundary conditions.

On quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in weighted Lp-spaces II

Our study of abstract quasi-linear parabolic problems in time-weighted L_p-spaces, begun in [17], is extended in this paper to include singular lower order terms, while keeping low initial regularity. The results are applied to reaction-diffusion problems, including Maxwell-Stefan diffusion, and to geometric evolution equations like the surface-diffusion flow or the Willmore flow. The method presented here will be applicable to other parabolic systems, including free boundary problems.

On well-posedness, stability, and bifurcation for the axisymmetric surface diffusion flow

In this article, we study the axisymmetric surface diffusion flow (ASD), a fourth-order geometric evolution law. In particular, we prove that ASD generates a real analytic semiflow in the space of (2 + α)-little-Hölder regular surfaces of revolution embedded in R^3 and satisfying periodic boundary conditions. We also give conditions for global existence of solutions and prove that solutions are real analytic in time and space. Further, we investigate the geometric properties of solutions to ASD. Utilizing a connection to axisymmetric surfaces with constant mean curvature, we characterize the equilibria of ASD. Then, focusing on the family of cylinders, we establish results regarding stability, instability and bifurcation behavior, with the radius acting as a bifurcation parameter for the problem.

Stability and bifurcation of equilibria for the axisymmetric averaged mean curvature flow

We study the averaged mean curvature flow, also called the volume preserving mean curvature flow, in the particular setting of axisymmetric surfaces embedded in R^3 satisfying periodic boundary conditions. We establish analytic well--posedness of the flow within the space of little-Hölder continuous surfaces, given rough initial data. We also establish dynamic properties of equilibria, including stability, instability, and bifurcation behavior of cylinders, where the radius acts as a bifurcation parameter.

Continuous maximal regularity and analytic semigroups

In this paper we establish a result regarding the connection between continuous maximal regularity and generation of analytic semigroups on a pair of densely embedded Banach spaces. More precisely, we show that continuous maximal regularity for a closed operator $A: E_1 \rightarrow E_0$ implies that $A$ generates a strongly continuous analytic semigroup on $E_0$ with domain equal $E_1$.

Elliptic operators and maximal regularity on periodic little-Hölder spaces

We consider one-dimensional inhomogeneous parabolic equations with higher-order elliptic differential operators subject to periodic boundary conditions. In our main result we show that the property of continuous maximal regularity is satisfied in the setting of periodic little-Hölder spaces, provided the coefficients of the differential operator satisfy minimal regularity assumptions. We address parameter-dependent elliptic equations, deriving invertibility and resolvent bounds which lead to results on generation of analytic semigroups. We also demonstrate that the techniques and results of the paper hold for elliptic differential operators with operator-valued coefficients, in the setting of vector-valued functions.
