Scale and Conformal Invariance in Higher Derivative Shift Symmetric Theories

The critical behavior of infinite families of shift symmetric interacting theories with higher derivative kinetic terms (non unitary) is considered. Single scalar theories with shift symmetry are classified according to their upper critical dimensions and studied at the leading non trivial order in perturbation theory. For two infinite families, one with quartic and one with cubic interactions, beta functions, criticality conditions and universal anomalous dimensions are computed. At the order considered, the cubic theories enjoy a one loop non renormalization of the vertex, so that the beta function depends non trivially only on the anomalous dimension. The trace of the energy momentum tensor is also investigated and it is shown that these two families of QFTs are conformally invariant at the fixed point of the RG flow.

Weyl Covariance and the Energy Momentum Tensors of Higher-Derivative Free Conformal Field Theories

Energy momentum tensors of higher-derivative free scalar conformal field theories in flat spacetime are discussed. Two algorithms for the computation of energy momentum tensors are described, which accomplish different goals: the first is brute-force and highlights the complexity of the energy momentum tensors, while the second displays some features of their geometric origin as variations of Weyl invariant curved-space actions. New compact expressions for energy momentum tensors are given and specific obstructions to defining them as conformal primary operators in some spacetime dimensions are highlighted. Our discussion is also extended to higher-derivative free spinor theories, which are based on higher-derivative generalizations of the Dirac action and provide interesting examples of conformal field theories in dimension higher than two.

A multicritical Landau-Potts field theory

We investigate a perturbatively renormalizable $S_{q}$ invariant model with $N=q-1$ scalar field components below the upper critical dimension $d_c=\frac{10}{3}$. Our results hint at the existence of multicritical generalizations of the critical models of spanning random clusters and percolations in three dimensions. We also discuss the role of our multicritical model in a conjecture that involves the separation of first and second order phases in the $(d,q)$ diagram of the Potts model.

Critical reflections on asymptotically safe gravity

Asymptotic safety is a theoretical proposal for the ultraviolet completion of quantum field theories, in particular for quantum gravity. Significant progress on this program has led to a first characterization of the Reuter fixed point. Further advancement in our understanding of the nature of quantum spacetime requires addressing a number of open questions and challenges. Here, we aim at providing a critical reflection on the state of the art in the asymptotic safety program, specifying and elaborating on open questions of both technical and conceptual nature. We also point out systematic pathways, in various stages of practical implementation, towards answering them. Finally, we also take the opportunity to clarify some common misunderstandings regarding the program.

Symmetry and universality of multi-field interactions in $6-ε$ dimensions

We outline a general strategy developed for the analysis of critical models, which we apply to obtain a heuristic classification of all universality classes with up to three field-theoretical scalar order parameters in $d=6-ε$ dimensions. As expected by the paradigm of universality, each class is uniquely characterized by its symmetry group and by a set of its scaling properties, neither of which are built-in by the formalism but instead emerge nontrivially as outputs of our computations. For three fields, we find several solutions mostly with discrete symmetries. These are nontrivial conformal field theory candidates in less than six dimensions, one of which is a new perturbatively unitary critical model.

Wilsonian Renormalization Group In The Functional Nonperturbative Approach

We consider a functional relation between a given Wilsonian RG flow, which has to be related to a specific coarse-graining procedure, and an infinite family of (UV cutoff) scale dependent field redefinitions. Within this framework one can define a family of Wilsonian proper-time exact RG equations associated to an arbitrary regulator function. New applications of these RG flow schemes to the Ising Universality class in three dimensions in the derivative expansion are shortly illustrated.

Could reggeon field theory be an effective theory for QCD in the Regge limit?

In this paper we investigate the possibility whether, in the extreme limit of high energies and large transverse distances, reggeon field theory might serve as an effective theory of high energy scattering for strong interactions. We analyse the functional renormalization group equations (flow equations) of reggeon field theory and search for fixed points in the space of (local) reggeon field theories. We study in complementary ways the candidate for the scaling solution, investigate its main properties and briefly discuss possible physical interpretations.

Covariant and background independent functional RG flow for the effective average action

We extend our prescription for the construction of a covariant and background-independent effective action for scalar quantum field theories to the case where momentum modes below a certain scale are suppressed by the presence of an infrared regulator. The key step is an appropriate choice of the infrared cutoff for which the Ward identity, capturing the information from single-field dependence of the ultraviolet action, continues to be exactly solvable, and therefore, in addition to covariance, manifest background independence of the effective action is guaranteed at any scale. A practical consequence is that in this framework one can adopt truncations dependent on the single total field. Furthermore we discuss the necessary and sufficient conditions for the preservation of symmetries along the renormalization group flow.

Renormalization Group Equation and scaling solutions for f(R) gravity in exponential parametrization

We employ the exponential parametrization of the metric and a "physical" gauge fixing procedure to write a functional flow equation for the gravitational effective average action in an $f(R)$ truncation. The background metric is a four-sphere and the coarse-graining procedure contains three free parameters. We look for scaling solutions, i.e. non-Gaussian fixed points for the function $f$. For a discrete set of values of the parameters, we find simple global solutions of quadratic polynomial form. For other values, global solutions can be found numerically. Such solutions can be extended in certain regions of parameter space and have two relevant directions. We discuss the merits and the shortcomings of this procedure.

Vacuum energy, Standard Model physics and the $750\; \rm{GeV}$ Diphoton Excess at the LHC

The conditions for the cancellation of one loop contributions to vacuum energy (both U.V. divergent and finite) coming from the known (Standard Model) fields and the field associated with the hypothetical 750 Gev diphoton excess are examined. Depending on the nature of this latter resonance we find that in order to satisfy the constraints (sum rules) different additional, minimal field contributions are required, leading to yet to be observed particles.

A flow equation for f(R) gravity and some of its exact solutions

We write a Renormalization Group (RG) equation for the function f in a theory of gravity in the f(R) truncation. Our equation differs from previous ones due to the exponential parametrization of the quantum fluctuations and to the choice of gauge. The cutoff procedure depends on three free parameters, and we find that there exist discrete special choices of parameters for which the flow equation has fixed points where f=f_0+f_1 R+f_2 R^2. For other values of the parameters the solution seems to be continuously deformed.

Asymptotic safety in $O(N)$ scalar models coupled to gravity

We extend recent results on scalar-tensor theories to the case of an O(N)-invariant multiplet. Some exact fixed point solutions of the RG flow equations are discussed. We find that also in the functional context, on employing a standard "type-I" cutoff, too many scalars destroy the gravitational fixed point. For d=3 we show the existence of the gravitationally dressed Wilson-Fisher fixed point also for N>1. We discuss also the results of the analysis for a different, scalar-free, coarse-graining scheme.

Multi-meson Yukawa interactions at criticality

The critical behavior of a relativistic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric Yukawa model at zero temperature and density is discussed for a continuous number of fermion degrees of freedom and of spacetime dimensions, with emphasis on the role played by multi-meson exchange in the Yukawa sector. We argue that this should be generically taken into account in studies based on the functional renormalization group, either in four-dimensional high-energy models or in lower-dimensional condensed-matter systems. By means of the latter method, we describe the generation of multi-critical models in less then three dimensions, both at infinite and finite number of flavors. We also provide different estimates of the critical exponents of the chiral Ising universality class in three dimensions for various field contents, from a couple of massless Dirac fermions down to the supersymmetric theory with a single Majorana spinor.

Search of scaling solutions in scalar-tensor gravity

We write new functional renormalization group equations for a scalar nonminimally coupled to gravity. Thanks to the choice of the parametrization and of the gauge fixing they are simpler than older equations and avoid some of the difficulties that were previously present. In three dimensions these equations admit, at least for sufficiently small fields, a solution that may be interpreted as a gravitationally dressed Wilson-Fisher fixed point. We also find for any dimension d>2 two analytic scaling solutions which we study for d=3 and d=4. One of them corresponds to the fixed point of the Einstein-Hilbert truncation, the others involve a nonvanishing minimal coupling.

Cosmological Backreaction for a Test Field Observer in a Chaotic Inflationary Model

In an inhomogeneous universe, an observer associated with a particular matter field does not necessarily measure the same cosmological evolution as an observer in a homogeneous and isotropic universe. Here we consider, in the context of a chaotic inflationary background model, a class of observers associated with a "clock field" for which we use a light test field. We compute the effective expansion rate and fluid equation of state in a gauge invariant way, taking into account the quantum fluctuations of the long wavelength modes, and working up to second order in perturbation theory and in the slow-roll approximation. We find that the effective expansion rate is smaller than what would be measured in the absence of fluctuations. Within the stochastic approach we study the bounds for which the approximations we make are consistent.

Gauge invariant backreaction in general single field models of inflation

In a general single field inflationary model we consider the effects of long wavelength scalar fluctuations on the effective expansion rate and equation of state seen by a class of free falling observers, using a physical gauge invariant formulation. In a previous work we showed that for a free massive inflaton no backreaction is observed within some constraints. In this paper we extend the validity of our previous results to the case of an arbitrary self-interacting inflation potential, working to second order in cosmological perturbation theory and to all order in slow-roll approximation. For these general inflationary models, we also show the equivalence of the free falling observers to the ones comoving with the inflaton field.

QCD Corrections to Electroweak Vector Boson Scattering at Small Scattering Angles

We investigate the role of a certain class of QCD corrections to electroweak vector boson scattering at small scattering angles and large energies. These are present since, from the perturbative analysis, the vector bosons may dissociate into quark-antiquark pairs giving rise to colour dipoles interacting through gluon exchanges. After the computation of the vector boson impact factors, we present expressions for the lowest order QCD scattering amplitude and for the leading logarithmic BFKL amplitude. Particularly we discuss numerical results for the process $γγ\to ZZ$. The QCD corrections to the cross section resulting from the interference with the electroweak ones are estimated and compared with the leading pure electroweak part. Corrections resulting from the leading log BFKL amplitude are of the order of few percent already at the $0.5 - 1$ TeV energy range.

Evolution of the gluon density in x with a running coupling constant

This is a draft describing the calculation of the evolution of the gluon density in $x$ from an initial value $x=x_{0}=0.01$ to smaller values, up to $x=10^{-8}$ in the hard pomeron formalism with a running coupling introduced on the basis of the bootstrap equation. The obtained gluon density is used to calculate the singlet part of the proton structure function. Comparison with experiment and the results following from the fixed coupling evolution is made.
