A different kind of four dimensional brane for string theory

We present a generalization of the string's Polyakov action that describes a conformally invariant four dimensional brane. The new extended object is very different from the traditional D-branes of string theory, but, nevertheless, shares some structural similarities with the string, especially when it comes to the low-energy limit of small tension. We introduce a rather rich structure of tensors that can play a role at low energies. In analogy with the bosonic string, we initiate the quantization of the new brane discussing the extent in which it produces a critical dimension of spacetime and Einstein's equations coupled to a scalar dilaton under some approximations.

Scale and Conformal Invariance in Higher Derivative Shift Symmetric Theories

The critical behavior of infinite families of shift symmetric interacting theories with higher derivative kinetic terms (non unitary) is considered. Single scalar theories with shift symmetry are classified according to their upper critical dimensions and studied at the leading non trivial order in perturbation theory. For two infinite families, one with quartic and one with cubic interactions, beta functions, criticality conditions and universal anomalous dimensions are computed. At the order considered, the cubic theories enjoy a one loop non renormalization of the vertex, so that the beta function depends non trivially only on the anomalous dimension. The trace of the energy momentum tensor is also investigated and it is shown that these two families of QFTs are conformally invariant at the fixed point of the RG flow.

The origin of Weyl gauging in metric-affine theories

In the first part, we discuss the interplay between local scale invariance and metric-affine degrees of freedom from few distinct points of view. We argue, rather generally, that the gauging of Weyl symmetry is a natural byproduct of requiring that scale invariance is a symmetry of a gravitational theory that is based on a metric and on an independent affine structure degrees of freedom. In the second part, we compute the Nöther identities associated with all the gauge symmetries, including Weyl, Lorentz and diffeomorphisms invariances, for general actions with matter degrees of freedom, exploiting a gauge covariant generalization of the Lie derivative. We find two equivalent ways to approach the problem, based on how we regard the spin-connection degrees of freedom, either as an independent object or as the sum of two Weyl invariant terms. The latter approach, which rests upon the use of a new connection, denoted $\hat{\nabla}$, is particularly convenient and constitutes one of our main results.

Weyl Covariance and the Energy Momentum Tensors of Higher-Derivative Free Conformal Field Theories

Energy momentum tensors of higher-derivative free scalar conformal field theories in flat spacetime are discussed. Two algorithms for the computation of energy momentum tensors are described, which accomplish different goals: the first is brute-force and highlights the complexity of the energy momentum tensors, while the second displays some features of their geometric origin as variations of Weyl invariant curved-space actions. New compact expressions for energy momentum tensors are given and specific obstructions to defining them as conformal primary operators in some spacetime dimensions are highlighted. Our discussion is also extended to higher-derivative free spinor theories, which are based on higher-derivative generalizations of the Dirac action and provide interesting examples of conformal field theories in dimension higher than two.

A multicritical Landau-Potts field theory

We investigate a perturbatively renormalizable $S_{q}$ invariant model with $N=q-1$ scalar field components below the upper critical dimension $d_c=\frac{10}{3}$. Our results hint at the existence of multicritical generalizations of the critical models of spanning random clusters and percolations in three dimensions. We also discuss the role of our multicritical model in a conjecture that involves the separation of first and second order phases in the $(d,q)$ diagram of the Potts model.

Symmetry and universality of multi-field interactions in $6-ε$ dimensions

We outline a general strategy developed for the analysis of critical models, which we apply to obtain a heuristic classification of all universality classes with up to three field-theoretical scalar order parameters in $d=6-ε$ dimensions. As expected by the paradigm of universality, each class is uniquely characterized by its symmetry group and by a set of its scaling properties, neither of which are built-in by the formalism but instead emerge nontrivially as outputs of our computations. For three fields, we find several solutions mostly with discrete symmetries. These are nontrivial conformal field theory candidates in less than six dimensions, one of which is a new perturbatively unitary critical model.

A proper fixed functional for four-dimensional Quantum Einstein Gravity

Realizing a quantum theory for gravity based on Asymptotic Safety hinges on the existence of a non-Gaussian fixed point of the theory's renormalization group flow. In this work, we use the functional renormalization group equation for the effective average action to study the fixed point underlying Quantum Einstein Gravity at the functional level including an infinite number of scale-dependent coupling constants. We formulate a list of guiding principles underlying the construction of a partial differential equation encoding the scale-dependence of $f(R)$-gravity. We show that this equation admits a unique, globally well-defined fixed functional describing the non-Gaussian fixed point at the level of functions of the scalar curvature. This solution is constructed explicitly via a numerical double-shooting method. In the UV, this solution is in good agreement with results from polynomial expansions including a finite number of coupling constants, while it scales proportional to $R^2$, dressed up with non-analytic terms, in the IR. We demonstrate that its structure is mainly governed by the conformal sector of the flow equation. The relation of our work to previous, partial constructions of similar scaling solutions is discussed.

RG flows of Quantum Einstein Gravity in the linear-geometric approximation

We construct a novel Wetterich-type functional renormalization group equation for gravity which encodes the gravitational degrees of freedom in terms of gauge-invariant fluctuation fields. Applying a linear-geometric approximation the structure of the new flow equation is considerably simpler than the standard Quantum Einstein Gravity construction since only transverse-traceless and trace part of the metric fluctuations propagate in loops. The geometric flow reproduces the phase-diagram of the Einstein-Hilbert truncation including the non-Gaussian fixed point essential for Asymptotic Safety. Extending the analysis to the polynomial $f(R)$-approximation establishes that this fixed point comes with similar properties as the one found in metric Quantum Einstein Gravity; in particular it possesses three UV-relevant directions and is stable with respect to deformations of the regulator functions by endomorphisms.

Scaling and superscaling solutions from the functional renormalization group

We study the renormalization group flow of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-invariant supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric scalar models in the local potential approximation using functional renormalization group methods. We focus our attention to the fixed points of the renormalization group flow of these models, which emerge as scaling solutions. In two dimensions these solutions are interpreted as the minimal (supersymmetric) models of conformal field theory, while in three dimension they are manifestations of the Wilson-Fisher universality class and its supersymmetric counterpart. We also study the analytically continued flow in fractal dimensions between 2 and 4 and determine the critical dimensions for which irrelevant operators become relevant and change the universality class of the scaling solution. We also include novel analytic and numerical investigations of the properties that determine the occurrence of the scaling solutions within the method. For each solution we offer new techniques to compute the spectrum of the deformations and obtain the corresponding critical exponents.

Spectral dimensions from the spectral action

The generalised spectral dimension $D_{ S}(T)$ provides a powerful tool for comparing different approaches to quantum gravity. In this work, we apply this formalism to the classical spectral actions obtained within the framework of almost-commutative geometry. Analysing the propagation of spin-0, spin-1 and spin-2 fields, we show that a non-trivial spectral dimension arises already at the classical level. The effective field theory interpretation of the spectral action yields plateau-structures interpolating between a fixed spin-independent $D_{ S}(T) = d_S$ for short and $D_{ S}(T) = 4$ for long diffusion times $T$. Going beyond effective field theory the spectral dimension is completely dominated by the high-momentum properties of the spectral action, yielding $D_{ S}(T)=0$ for all spins. Our results support earlier claims that high-energy bosons do not propagate.

RG flows of Quantum Einstein Gravity on maximally symmetric spaces

We use the Wetterich-equation to study the renormalization group flow of $f(R)$-gravity in a three-dimensional, conformally reduced setting. Building on the exact heat kernel for maximally symmetric spaces, we obtain a partial differential equation which captures the scale-dependence of $f(R)$ for positive and, for the first time, negative scalar curvature. The effects of different background topologies are studied in detail and it is shown that they affect the gravitational RG flow in a way that is not visible in finite-dimensional truncations. Thus, while featuring local background independence, the functional renormalization group equation is sensitive to the topological properties of the background. The detailed analytical and numerical analysis of the partial differential equation reveals two globally well-defined fixed functionals with at most a finite number of relevant deformations. Their properties are remarkably similar to two of the fixed points identified within the $R^2$-truncation of full Quantum Einstein Gravity. As a byproduct, we obtain a nice illustration of how the functional renormalization group realizes the "integrating out" of fluctuation modes on the three-sphere.

Fixed Functionals in Asymptotically Safe Gravity

We summarize the status of constructing fixed functionals within the f(R)-truncation of Quantum Einstein Gravity in three spacetime dimensions. Focusing on curvatures much larger than the IR-cutoff scale, it is shown that the fixed point equation admits three different scaling regimes: for classical and quantum dominance the equation becomes linear and has power-law solutions, while the balanced case gives rise to a generalized homogeneous equation whose order is reduced by one and whose solutions are non-analytical.

Functional renormalization group of the non-linear sigma model and the O(N) universality class

We study the renormalization group flow of the O(N) non-linear sigma model in arbitrary dimensions. The effective action of the model is truncated to fourth order in the derivative expansion and the flow is obtained by combining the non-perturbative renormalization group and the background field method. We investigate the flow in three dimensions and analyze the phase structure for arbitrary N. The corresponding results about the critical properties of the models will serve as a reference for upcoming simulations with the Monte-Carlo renormalization group.

Renormalization Group Flow of Hexatic Membranes

We investigate hexatic membranes embedded in Euclidean D-dimensional space using a reparametrization invariant formulation combined with exact renormalization group (RG) equations. An XY-model coupled to a fluid membrane, when integrated out, induces long-range interactions between curvatures described by a Polyakov term in the effective action. We evaluate the contributions of this term to the running surface tension, bending and Gaussian rigidities in the approximation of vanishing disclination (vortex) fugacity. We find a non-Gaussian fixed-point where the membrane is crinkled and has a non-trivial fractal dimension.

Fixed-Functionals of three-dimensional Quantum Einstein Gravity

We study the non-perturbative renormalization group flow of f(R)-gravity in three-dimensional Asymptotically Safe Quantum Einstein Gravity. Within the conformally reduced approximation, we derive an exact partial differential equation governing the RG-scale dependence of the function f(R). This equation is shown to possess two isolated and one continuous one-parameter family of scale-independent, regular solutions which constitute the natural generalization of RG fixed points to the realm of infinite-dimensional theory spaces. All solutions are bounded from below and give rise to positive definite kinetic terms. Moreover, they admit either one or two UV-relevant deformations, indicating that the corresponding UV-critical hypersurfaces remain finite dimensional despite the inclusion of an infinite number of coupling constants. The impact of our findings on the gravitational Asymptotic Safety program and its connection to new massive gravity is briefly discussed.

Off-diagonal heat-kernel expansion and its application to fields with differential constraints

The off-diagonal heat-kernel expansion of a Laplace operator including a general gauge-connection is computed on a compact manifold without boundary up to third order in the curvatures. These results are used to study the early-time expansion of the traced heat-kernel on the space of transverse vector fields satisfying the differential constraint $D^μv_μ= 0$. It is shown that the resulting Seeley-deWitt coefficients generically develop singularities, which vanish if the metric is flat or satisfies the Einstein condition. The implications of our findings for the evaluation of the gravitational functional renormalization group equation are briefly discussed.
