Measurement of interaction-dressed Berry curvature and quantum metric in solids by optical absorption

The quantum geometric properties of a Bloch state in momentum space are usually described by the Berry curvature and quantum metric. In realistic gapped materials where interactions and disorder render the Bloch state not a viable starting point, we generalize these concepts by introducing dressed Berry curvature and quantum metric at finite temperature, in which the effect of many-body interactions can be included perturbatively. These quantities are extracted from the charge polarization susceptibility caused by linearly or circularly polarized electric fields, whose spectral functions can be measured from momentum-resolved exciton or infrared absorption rate. As a concrete example, we investigate Chern insulators in the presence of impurity scattering, whose results suggest that the quantum geometric properties are protected by the energy gap against many-body interactions.

Searching for anomalous top quark interactions with proton tagging and timing detectors at the LHC

We study the LHC sensitivity to new broad neutral resonances produced in two-photon fusion and decaying to a top quark pair, $γγ\to t\bar{t}$. This is probed in central exclusive $t\bar{t}$ production in proton-proton collisions, $pp \to p t\bar{t} p$. We use the tagging of the intact protons by PPS (CMS) and AFP (ATLAS) and consider the semi-leptonic $t\bar t$ channel. The sensitivity is also mapped onto a set of dimension-8 $γγt\bar{t}$ operators in the large mass limit. Using the kinematical correlations between the intact protons and the reconstructed $t\bar{t}$ system, we obtain a sensitivity to the couplings of the dimension-8 operators of $1.4 \cdot 10^{-11}~\mathrm{GeV}^{-4}$ at 95% CL. The sensitivity to the anomalous couplings is significantly improved down to about $7\cdot 10^{-12}~\mathrm{GeV}^{-4}$ if the proton time-of-flight is known with a precision of 20 ps in future measurements. The 95% CL sensitivity to broad neutral resonances reaches masses of order $ 1500~\mathrm{GeV} $ when using timing information.

White Paper on Forward Physics, BFKL, Saturation Physics and Diffraction

The goal of this whitepaper is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics. We discuss the occurrences of BFKL resummation effects in special final states, such as Mueller-Navelet jets, jet gap jets, and heavy quarkonium production. It further addresses TMD factorization at low x and the manifestation of a semi-hard saturation scale in (generalized) TMD PDFs. More theoretical aspects of low x physics, probes of the quark gluon plasma, as well as the possibility to use photon-hadron collisions at the LHC to constrain hadronic structure at low x, and the resulting complementarity between LHC and the EIC are also presented. We also briefly discuss diffraction at colliders as well as the possibility to explore further the electroweak theory in central exclusive events using the LHC as a photon-photon collider.

Realistic GUT Yukawa Couplings from a Random Clockwork Model

We present realistic models of flavor in SU(5) and SO(10) grand unified theories (GUTs). The models are renormalizable and do not require any exotic representations in order to accommodate the necessary GUT breaking effects in the Yukawa couplings. They are based on a simple clockwork Lagrangian whose structure is enforced with just two (one) vectorlike U(1) symmetries in the case of SU(5) and SO(10) respectively. The inter-generational hierarchies arise spontaneously from products of matrices with order one random entries.

Scattering Light by Light at 750 GeV at the LHC

We consider the possibility that the diphoton excess at 750 GeV is caused by a new scalar resonance produced in photon fusion. This scenario is parametrised by only one relevant effective couplings and is thus minimal. We show that this setup can reproduce both the production rate and width of the resonance, and is not in conflict with the 8 TeV limits on the diphoton cross section. The scenario also predicts event rates for $WW$, $ZZ$, $Zγ$ final states. We suggest to perform precision measurements by studying light-by-light scattering with intact protons detected in forward detectors. We construct a simple model that shows that the required couplings can be achieved with new vectorlike, uncolored fermions (with a strong Yukawa coupling to the resonance) which may also account for the required width.

The Excitation of the Global Symmetry-Breaking Vacuum in Composite Higgs Models

We consider scenarios of Higgs compositeness where the Higgs doublet arises as a pseudo-Nambu Goldstone boson. Our focus is the physical scalar ("radial") excitation associated with the global symmetry breaking vacuum, which we call the "global Higgs". For the minimal case of a $SO(5)/SO(4)$ coset, the couplings of the global Higgs to Standard Model (SM) particles are fully determined by group theoretical factors and two decay constants. The global Higgs also couples to the composite resonances of the theory, inducing an interaction with the SM gauge bosons at one-loop. We thoroughly analyze representative fermionic sectors, considering a global Higgs both in the $\bf 5$ and $\bf 14$ representations of $SO(5)$ and taking into account the renormalization group evolution of couplings in the composite sector. We derive the one-loop effective couplings and all decays of the global Higgs, showing that its decay width over mass can range from $ O (10^{-3})$ to $ O(1)$. Because of the multiplicity of the resonances, the coupling of the global Higgs to gluons is sizeable, potentially opening a new window into composite models at the LHC.

Effective theory for neutral resonances and a statistical dissection of the ATLAS diboson excess

We classify the complete set of dimension-5 operators relevant for the resonant production of a singlet of spin 0 or 2 linearly coupled to the Standard Model (SM). We compute the decay width of such states as a function of the effective couplings, and provide the matching to various well-motivated New Physics scenarios. We then investigate the possibility that one of these neutral resonances be at the origin of the excess in diboson production recently reported by the ATLAS collaboration. We perform a shape analysis of the excess under full consideration of the systematic uncertainties to extract the width $Γ_{\rm tot}$ of the hypothetical resonance, finding it to be in the range 26 GeV $<Γ_{\rm tot}<$ 144 GeV at 95\% C.L. We then point out that the three overlapping selections $WW$, $WZ$, $ZZ$ reported by ATLAS follow a joint trivariate Poisson distribution, which opens the possibility of a thorough likelihood analysis of the event rates. The background systematic uncertainties are also included in our analysis. We show that the data do not require $W\!Z$ production and could thus in principle be explained by neutral resonances. We then use both the information on the width and the cross section, which prove to be highly complementary, to test the effective Lagrangians of singlet resonances. Regarding specific models, we find that neither scalars coupled via the Higgs-portal nor the Randall-Sundrum (RS) radion can explain the ATLAS anomaly. The RS graviton with all matter on the infrared (IR) brane can in principle fit the observed excess, while the RS model with matter propagating in the bulk requires the presence of IR brane kinetic terms for the gauge fields.

The Dynamical Composite Higgs

We present a simple microscopic realization of a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNGB) boson Higgs scenario arising from the breaking of $SO(5) \rightarrow SO(4)$. The Higgs constituents are explicitly identified as well as the interactions responsible for forming the bound state and breaking the electroweak symmetry. This outcome follows from the presence of four-fermion interactions with a super-critical coupling, and uses the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio mechanism to break the global $SO(5)$ symmetry. The Higgs potential is found to be insensitive to high energy scales due to the existence of an approximate infrared fixed point. The appearance of vector resonances is described and the correspondence with other proposals in the literature established. The model described here is significantly simpler than other recent ultraviolet completions of pNGB scenarios. The observed Higgs mass can be accommodated, and agreement with electroweak precision tests achieved in certain regions of parameter space. There are also new vector-like fermions, some of which may lie within reach of the LHC. In addition, we predict a heavy standard model singlet scalar in the multi-TeV range. The amount of fine-tuning required in the model is studied. Finally, we show that such a scheme can be completed in the ultraviolet by a renormalizable theory.

Anomalous gauge couplings from composite Higgs and warped extra dimensions

We examine trilinear and quartic anomalous gauge couplings (AGCs) generated in composite Higgs models and models with warped extra dimensions. We first revisit the SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y effective Lagrangian and derive the charged and two-photon neutral AGCs. We derive the general perturbative contributions to the pure field-strength operators from spin 0, 1/2, 1 resonances by means of the heat kernel method. In the composite Higgs framework, we derive the pattern of expected deviations from typical SO(N) embeddings of the light composite top partner. We then study a generic warped extra dimension framework with AdS_5 background, recasting in few parameters the features of models relevant for AGCs. We also present a detailed study of the latest bounds from electroweak and Higgs precision observables, with and without brane kinetic terms. For vanishing brane kinetic terms, we find that the S and T parameters exclude KK gauge modes of the RS custodial [non-custodial] scenario below 7.7 [14.7] TeV, for a brane Higgs and below 6.6 [8.1] TeV for a Pseudo Nambu-Goldstone Higgs, at 95% CL. These constraints can be relaxed in presence of brane kinetic terms. The leading AGCs are probing the KK gravitons and the KK modes of bulk gauge fields in parts of the parameter space. In these scenarios, the future CMS and ATLAS forward proton detectors could be sensitive to the effect of KK gravitons in the multi-TeV mass range.

Linking Natural Supersymmetry to Flavour Physics

With the aim of linking natural supersymmetry to flavour physics, a model is proposed based on a family symmetry G \times U(1), where G is a discrete nonabelian subgroup of SU(2), with both F-term and (abelian) D-term supersymmetry breaking. A good fit to the fermion masses and mixing is obtained with the same U(1) charges for the left- and right- handed quarks of the first two families and the right-handed bottom quark, and with zero charge for the left-handed top-bottom doublet and the the right handed top. The model shows an interesting indirect correlation between the correct prediction for the V_{ub}/V_{cb} ratio and large right-handed rotations in the (s,b) sector, required to diagonalise the Yukawa matrix. For the squarks, one obtains almost degenerate first two generations. The main source of the FCNC and CP violation effects is the splitting between the first two families and the right-handed sbottom determined by the relative size of F-term and D-term supersymmetry breaking. The presence of the large right-handed rotation implies that the bounds on the masses of the first two families of squarks and the right handed sbottom are in a few to a few tens TeV range. The picture that emerges is light stops and left handed sbottom and much heavier other squarks.

A Bayesian view of the Higgs sector with higher dimensional operators

We investigate the possibilities of New Physics affecting the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector. An effective Lagrangian with dimension-six operators is used to capture the effect of New Physics. We carry out a global Bayesian inference analysis, considering the recent LHC data set including all available correlations, as well as results from Tevatron. Trilinear gauge boson couplings and electroweak precision observables are also taken into account. The case of weak bosons tensorial couplings is closely examined and NLO QCD corrections are taken into account in the deviations we predict. We consider two scenarios, one where the coefficients of all the dimension-six operators are essentially unconstrained, and one where a certain subset is loop suppressed. In both scenarios, we find that large deviations from some of the SM Higgs couplings can still be present, assuming New Physics arising at 3 TeV. In particular, we find that a significantly reduced coupling of the Higgs to the top quark is possible and slightly favored by searches on Higgs production in association with top quark pairs. The total width of the Higgs boson is only weakly constrained and can vary between 0.7 and 2.7 times the Standard Model value within 95% Bayesian credible interval (BCI). We also observe sizeable effects induced by New Physics contributions to tensorial couplings. In particular, the Higgs boson decay width into $Zγ$ can be enhanced by up to a factor 12 within 95% BCI.

Flavor Physics in Warped Space

We review constraints from quark and lepton flavor violation on extra dimensional models with warped geometry, both in the minimal and the custodial model. For both scenarios, KK masses that are large enough to suppress constraints from electroweak precision tests also sufficiently suppress all quark flavor and CP violation, with the exception of CP violation in $K\bar K$ mixing and (to a lesser extend) in $D\bar D$ mixing. In the lepton sector the minimal scenario leads to excessively large contributions to $μ\to eγ$ transitions, requiring KK masses of at least 20 TeV or larger.

Neutrino Mixing from Wilson Lines in Warped Space

We consider the generation of the hierarchical charged lepton spectrum and anarchic neutrino masses and mixing angles in warped extra dimensional models with Randall-Sundrum metric. We have classified all possible cases giving rise to realistic spectra for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. An anarchic neutrino spectrum requires a convenient bulk symmetry broken by boundary conditions on both UV and IR branes. We have in particular considered the case of Majorana neutrinos with a continuous bulk symmetry. To avoid unwanted massless extra gauge bosons the 4D group should be empty. If the 4D coset is not vanishing it can provide a Wilson Line description of the neutrino Majorana mass matrix. We have studied an example based on the bulk gauge group U(3)_{L} \otimes U(3)_{N} \otimes_{i} U(1)_{E^i} with the Wilson Line in SO(3)_{N} satisfying all required conditions. A χ^2-fit to experimental data exhibits the 95% CL region in the parameter space with no fine-tuning. As a consequence of the symmetries of the theory there is no tree-level induced lepton flavor violation and so one-loop processes are consistent with experimental data for KK-modes about a few TeV. The model is easily generalizable to models with IR deformed metrics with similar conclusions.

Universal contributions to scalar masses from five dimensional supergravity

We compute the effective Kahler potential for matter fields in warped compactifications, starting from five dimensional gauged supergravity, as a function of the matter fields localization. We show that truncation to zero modes is inconsistent and the tree-level exchange of the massive gravitational multiplet is needed for consistency of the four-dimensional theory. In addition to the standard Kahler coming from dimensional reduction, we find the quartic correction coming from integrating out the gravity multiplet. We apply our result to the computation of scalar masses, by assuming that the SUSY breaking field is a bulk hypermultiplet. In the limit of extreme opposite localization of the matter and the spurion fields, we find zero scalar masses, consistent with sequestering arguments. Surprisingly enough, for all the other cases the scalar masses are tachyonic. This suggests the holographic interpretation that a CFT sector always generates operators contributing in a tachyonic way to scalar masses. Viability of warped su- persymmetric compactifications necessarily asks then for additional contributions. We discuss the case of additional bulk vector multiplets with mixed boundary conditions, which is a partic- ularly simple and attractive way to generate large positive scalar masses. We show that in this case successful fermion mass matrices implies highly degenerate scalar masses for the first two generations of squarks and sleptons.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in Warped Extra Dimensions

We review Electroweak breaking in warped Extra Dimensions and show how it is constrained by Electroweak precision tests. We then proceed to describe a model which is based on a bulk Higgs field and a metric that is deformed from the usual five dimensional Anti de Sitter space near the Infrared (IR) boundary. It allows to softly decouple the Higgs field from the Kaluza Klein excitations near the IR and thus reduces their contribution to the precision observables.

Flavor Phenomenology in General 5D Warped Spaces

We have considered a general 5D warped model with SM fields propagating in the bulk and computed explicit expressions for oblique and non-oblique electroweak observables as well as for flavor and CP violating effective four-fermion operators. We have compared the resulting lower bounds on the Kaluza-Klein (KK) scale in the RS model and a recently proposed model with a metric modified towards the IR brane, which is consistent with oblique parameters without the need for a custodial symmetry. We have randomly generated 40,000 sets of O(1) 5D Yukawa couplings and made a fit of the quark masses and CKM matrix elements in both models. This method allows to identify the percentage of points consistent with a given KK mass, which in turn provides us with a measure for the required fine-tuning. Comparison with current experimental data on Rb, FCNC and CP violating operators exhibits an improved behavior of our model with respect to the RS model. In particular, allowing 10% fine-tuning the combined results point towards upper bounds on the KK gauge boson masses around 3.3 TeV in our model as compared with 13 TeV in the RS model. One reason for this improvement is that fermions in our model are shifted, with respect to fermions in the RS model, towards the UV brane thus decreasing the strength of the modifications of electroweak observables.

Improving Naturalness in Warped Models with a Heavy Bulk Higgs Boson

A Standard-Model-like Higgs boson should be light in order to comply with electroweak precision measurements from LEP. We consider five-dimensional (5D) warped models -- with a deformation of the metric in the IR region -- as UV completions of the Standard Model with a heavy Higgs boson. Provided the Higgs boson propagates in the 5D bulk the Kaluza Klein (KK) modes of the gauge bosons can compensate for the Higgs boson contribution to oblique parameters while their masses lie within the range of the LHC. The little hierarchy between KK scale and Higgs mass essentially disappears and the naturalness of the model greatly improves with respect to the AdS (Randall-Sundrum) model. In fact the fine-tuning is better than 10% for all values of the Higgs boson mass.

Suppressing Electroweak Precision Observables in 5D Warped Models

We elaborate on a recently proposed mechanism to suppress large contributions to the electroweak precision observables in five dimensional (5D) warped models, without the need for an extended 5D gauge sector. The main ingredient is a modification of the AdS metric in the vicinity of the infrared (IR) brane corresponding to a strong deviation from conformality in the IR of the 4D holographic dual. We compute the general low energy effective theory of the 5D warped Standard Model, emphasizing additional IR contributions to the wave function renormalization of the light Higgs mode. We also derive expressions for the S and T parameters as a function of a generic 5D metric and zero-mode wave functions. We give an approximate formula for the mass of the radion that works even for strong deviation from the AdS background. We proceed to work out the details of an explicit model and derive bounds for the first KK masses of the various bulk fields. The radion is the lightest new particle although its mass is already at about 1/3 of the mass of the lightest resonances, the KK states of the gauge bosons. We examine carefully various issues that can arise for extreme choices of parameters such as the possible reintroduction of the hierarchy problem, the onset of nonperturbative physics due to strong IR curvature or the creation of new hierarchies near the Planck scale. We conclude that a KK scale of 1 TeV is compatible with all these constraints.

Warped 5D Standard Model Consistent with EWPT

For a 5D Standard Model propagating in an AdS background with an IR localized Higgs, compatibility of bulk KK gauge modes with EWPT yields a phenomenologically unappealing KK spectrum (m > 12.5 TeV) and leads to a "little hierarchy problem". For a bulk Higgs the solution to the hierarchy problem reduces the previous bound only by sqrt(3). As a way out, models with an enhanced bulk gauge symmetry SU(2)_R x U(1)_(B-L) were proposed. In this note we describe a much simpler (5D Standard) Model, where introduction of an enlarged gauge symmetry is no longer required. It is based on a warped gravitational background which departs from AdS at the IR brane and a bulk propagating Higgs. The model is consistent with EWPT for a range of KK masses within the LHC reach.

preprint2011arXiv

Warped Electroweak Breaking Without Custodial Symmetry

We propose an alternative to the introduction of an extra gauge (custodial) symmetry to suppress the contribution of KK modes to the T parameter in warped theories of electroweak breaking. The mechanism is based on a general class of warped 5D metrics and a Higgs propagating in the bulk. The metrics are nearly AdS in the UV region but depart from AdS in the IR region, towards where KK fluctuations are mainly localized, and have a singularity outside the slice between the UV and IR branes. This gravitational background is generated by a bulk stabilizing scalar field which triggers a natural solution to the hierarchy problem. Depending on the model parameters, gauge-boson KK modes can be consistent with present bounds on EWPT for m > 1 TeV at 95% CL. The model contains a light Higgs mode which unitarizes the four-dimensional theory. The reduction in the precision observables can be traced back to a large wave function renormalization for this mode.

Flavour in supersymmetry: horizontal symmetries or wave function renormalisation

We compare theoretical and experimental predictions of two main classes of models addressing fermion mass hierarchies and flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) effects in supersymmetry: Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) U(1) gauged flavour models and Nelson-Strassler/extra dimensional models with hierarchical wave functions for the families. We show that whereas the two lead to identical predictions in the fermion mass matrices, the second class generates a stronger suppression of FCNC effects. We prove that, whereas at first sight the FN setup is more constrained due to anomaly cancelation conditions, imposing unification of gauge couplings in the second setup generates conditions which precisely match the mixed anomaly constraints in the FN setup. Finally, we provide an economical extra dimensional realisation of the hierarchical wave functions scenario in which the leptonic FCNC can be efficiently suppressed due to the strong coupling (CFT) origin of the electron mass.

From Soft Walls to Infrared Branes

Five dimensional warped spaces with soft walls are generalizations of the standard Randall-Sundrum compactifications, where instead of an infrared brane one has a curvature singularity (with vanishing warp factor) at finite proper distance in the bulk. We project the physics near the singularity onto a hypersurface located a small distance away from it in the bulk. This results in a completely equivalent description of the soft wall in terms of an effective infrared brane, hiding any singular point. We perform explicitly this calculation for two classes of soft wall backgrounds used in the literature. The procedure has several advantages. It separates in a clean way the physics of the soft wall from the physics of the five dimensional bulk, facilitating a more direct comparison with standard two-brane warped compactifications. Moreover, consistent soft walls show a sort of universal behavior near the singularity which is reflected in the effective brane Lagrangian. Thirdly, for many purposes, a good approximation is obtained by assuming the bulk background away from the singularity to be the usual Randall-Sundrum metric, thus making the soft wall backgrounds better analytically tractable. We check the validity of this procedure by calculating the spectrum of bulk fields and comparing it to the exact result, finding very good agreement.

Soft-Wall Stabilization

We propose a general class of five-dimensional soft-wall models with AdS metric near the ultraviolet brane and four-dimensional Poincaré invariance, where the infrared scale is determined dynamically. A large UV/IR hierarchy can be generated without any fine-tuning, thus solving the electroweak/Planck scale hierarchy problem. Generically, the spectrum of fluctuations is discrete with a level spacing (mass gap) provided by the inverse length of the wall, similar to RS1 models with Standard Model fields propagating in the bulk. Moreover two particularly interesting cases arise. They can describe: (a) a theory with a continuous spectrum above the mass gap which can model unparticles corresponding to operators of a CFT where the conformal symmetry is broken by a mass gap, and; (b) a theory with a discrete spectrum provided by linear Regge trajectories as in AdS/QCD models.

One-Loop Effective Action in Orbifold Compactifications

We employ the covariant background formalism to derive generic expressions for the one-loop effective action in field theoretic orbifold compactifications. The contribution of each orbifold sector is given by the effective action of its fixed torus with a shifted mass matrix. We thus study in detail the computation of the heat kernel on tori. Our formalism manifestly separates UV sensitive (local) from UV-insensitive (nonlocal) renormalization. To exemplify our methods, we study the effective potential of 6d gauge theory as well as kinetic terms for gravitational moduli in 11d supergravity.

Anomalies on Six Dimensional Orbifolds

We consider localized anomalies in six dimensional Z_n orbifolds. We give a very simple expression for the contribution of a bulk fermion to the fixed point gauge anomaly that is independent of the order n of the orbifold twist. We show it can be split into three terms, two of which are canceled by bulk fermions and Green-Schwarz four forms respectively. The remaining anomaly carries an integer coefficient and hence can be canceled by localized fermions in suitable representations. We present various examples in the context of supersymmetric theories. Also we point out that the six-dimensional gravitational symmetries generally have localized anomalies that require localized four-dimensional fields to transform nontrivially under them.

Radius Stabilization by Two-Loop Casimir Energy

It is well known that the Casimir energy of bulk fields induces a non-trivial potential for the compactification radius of higher-dimensional field theories. On dimensional grounds, the 1-loop potential is ~ 1/R^4. Since the 5d gauge coupling constant g^2 has the dimension of length, the two-loop correction is ~ g^2/R^5. The interplay of these two terms leads, under very general circumstances (including other interacting theories and more compact dimensions), to a stabilization at finite radius. Perturbative control or, equivalently, a parametrically large compact radius is ensured if the 1-loop coefficient is small because of an approximate fermion-boson cancellation. This is similar to the perturbativity argument underlying the Banks-Zaks fixed point proposal. Our analysis includes a scalar toy model, 5d Yang-Mills theory with charged matter, the examination of S^1 and S^1/Z_2 geometries, as well as a brief discussion of the supersymmetric case with Scherk-Schwarz SUSY breaking. 2-Loop calculability in the S^1/Z_2 case relies on the log-enhancement of boundary kinetic terms at the 1-loop level.
