Gravitational Imprints from Heavy Kaluza-Klein Resonances

We systematically study the holographic phase transition of the radion field in a five-dimensional warped model which includes a scalar potential with a power-like behavior. We consider Kaluza-Klein (KK) resonances with masses $m_{\rm KK}$ at the TeV scale or beyond. The backreaction of the radion field on the gravitational metric is taken into account by using the superpotential formalism. The confinement/deconfinement first order phase transition leads to a gravitational wave stochastic background which mainly depends on the scale $m_{\rm KK}$ and the number of colors, $N$, in the dual theory. Its power spectrum peaks at a frequency that depends on the amount of tuning required in the electroweak sector. It turns out that the present and forthcoming gravitational wave observatories can probe scenarios where the KK resonances are very heavy. Current aLIGO data already rule out vector boson KK resonances with masses in the interval $m_{\rm KK}\sim(1 - 10) \times 10^5$ TeV. Future gravitational experiments will be sensitive to resonances with masses $m_{\rm KK}\lesssim 10^5$ TeV (LISA), $10^8$ TeV (aLIGO Design) and $10^9$ TeV (ET). Finally, we also find that the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bound in the frequency spectrum turns into a lower bound for the nucleation temperature as $T_n \gtrsim 10^{-4}\sqrt{N} \,m_{\rm KK}$.

On gapped continuum resonance spectra

In this work we study a warped five-dimensional (5D) model with ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) branes, that solves the hierarchy problem with a fundamental 5D Planck scale $M$, and curvature parameter $k$, of the order of the 4D Planck mass $M_{\textrm{Planck}}\equiv 2.4\times 10^{15}$ TeV. The model exhibits a continuum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes with different mass gaps, at the TeV scale, for all fields. We have computed the Green's functions and spectral densities, and shown how the presence of a continuum KK spectrum can produce an enhancement in the cross section of some Standard Model processes. The metric is linear near the IR, in conformal coordinates, as in the linear dilaton and 5D clockwork models, for which $M\sim$ TeV. We also analyze a pure (continuum) linear dilaton scenario, solving the hierarchy problem with more conventional fundamental $M$ and $k$ scales of the order of $M_{\textrm{Planck}}$, and a continuum spectrum.

Diphoton and Diboson Probes of Fermiophobic Higgs Bosons at the LHC

Extensions of the Standard Model Higgs sector with electroweak charged scalars can possess exotic `Higgs' bosons with vanishing or suppressed couplings to Standard Model fermions. These `fermiophobic' scalars, which cannot be produced via gluon fusion, are constrained by LHC measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to have a small vacuum expectation value. This implies that vector boson fusion and associated vector boson production are in general suppressed rendering conventional Higgs searches insensitive. However, Drell-Yan Higgs pair production, which is not present in the SM, can be sizeable even in the limit of vanishing exotic Higgs vacuum expectation value. We utilize this to show that diphoton searches at 8 TeV LHC already rule out a large class of neutral fermiophobic Higgs bosons below around 110 GeV. This includes fermiophobic scalars found in two Higgs doublet as well as Higgs triplet and Georgi-Machacek type models. Our results extend the only relevant limit on fermiophobic Higgs bosons obtained by a recent CDF analysis of $4γ+ X$ Tevatron data. Furthermore, diphoton limits are independent of the decay of the second Higgs boson and thus apply even for degenerate masses in contrast to the CDF search. We also find that if the fermiophobic Higgs has very enhanced couplings to photons, masses as large as $\sim 150$ GeV can be ruled out while if these couplings are somehow highly suppressed, masses below $\sim 90$ GeV can still be ruled out. Finally, we show that $WW$ and $ZZ$ diboson searches may serve as complementary probes for masses above the diphoton limit up to $\sim 250$ GeV and discuss prospects at 13 TeV LHC.

Light dilatons in warped space: Higgs boson and LHCb anomalies

We study the extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a light dilaton in a five dimensional warped model. In particular, we analyze the coupling of the dilaton with the SM matter fields, compare the model predictions with Electroweak Precisions Tests and find the corresponding bounds on the mass of the lightest Kaluza-Klein modes. We also investigate the possibility that the Higgs-like resonance found at the LHC can be a dilaton. Finally, we show that our set-up can also provide an explanation of the anomalies recently observed in $B$-meson decays.

On dilatons and the LHC diphoton excess

We study soft wall models that can embed the Standard Model and a naturally light dilaton. Exploiting the full capabilities of these models we identify the parameter space that allows to pass Electroweak Precision Tests with a moderate Kaluza-Klein scale, around $2$ TeV. We analyze the coupling of the dilaton with Standard Model (SM) fields in the bulk, and discuss two applications: i) Models with a light dilaton as the first particle beyond the SM pass quite easily all observational tests even with a dilaton lighter than the Higgs. However the possibility of a 125 GeV dilaton as a Higgs impostor is essentially disfavored; ii) We show how to extend the soft wall models to realize a 750 GeV dilaton that could explain the recently reported diphoton excess at the LHC.

Strong electroweak phase transition from Supersymmetric Custodial Triplets

The Supersymmetric Custodial Triplet Model, a supersymmetric generalization of the Georgi-Machacek model, has proven to be an interesting modification of the MSSM. It extends the MSSM Higgs sector by three extra SU(2)L triplets in such a way that approximate custodial invariance is preserved and rho-parameter deviations are kept under control. By means of a sizeable triplet contribution to electroweak breaking the model is able to generate a barrier at tree level between the false vacuum and the electroweak one. This will result in a strong first order phase transition for an important region of the parameter space. We also look at the gravitational waves that could be generated as a result of the phase transition and show how future interferometers could be used as a probe of the model.

Dark Matter from the Supersymmetric Custodial Triplet Model

The Supersymmetric Custodial Triplet Model (SCTM) adds to the particle content of the MSSM three $SU(2)_L$ triplet chiral superfields with hypercharge $Y=(0,\pm1)$. At the superpotential level the model respects a global $SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R$ symmetry only broken by the Yukawa interactions. The pattern of vacuum expectation values of the neutral doublet and triplet scalar fields depends on the symmetry pattern of the Higgs soft breaking masses. We study the cases where this symmetry is maintained in the Higgs sector, and when it is broken only by the two doublets attaining different vacuum expectation values. In the former case, the symmetry is spontaneously broken down to the vectorial subgroup $SU(2)_V$ and the $ρ$ parameter is protected by the custodial symmetry. However in both situations the $ρ$ parameter is protected at tree level, allowing for light triplet scalars with large vacuum expectation values. We find that over a large range of parameter space, a light neutralino can supply the correct relic abundance of dark matter either through resonant s-channel triplet scalar funnels or well tempering of the Bino with the triplet fermions. Direct detection experiments have trouble probing these model points because the custodial symmetry suppresses the coupling of the neutralino and the $Z$ and a small Higgsino component of the neutralino suppresses the coupling with the Higgs. Likewise the annihilation cross sections for indirect detection lie below the Fermi-LAT upper bounds for the different channels.

Diboson resonant production in non-custodial composite Higgs models

We show that the recently reported excess in resonant diboson production can be explained in the context of non-custodial composite Higgs models. Dibosons are generated via the s-channel exchange of massive vector bosons present in these models. We discuss the compatibility of the signal excess with other diboson experimental searches. We also discuss the tension between diboson production and other experimental tests of the model that include electroweak precision data, dilepton, dijet and top pair production and show that there is a region of parameter space in which they are all compatible with the excess.

Electroweak vacuum stability and finite quadratic radiative corrections

If the Standard Model (SM) is an effective theory, as currently believed, it is valid up to some energy scale $Λ$ to which the Higgs vacuum expectation value is sensitive throughout radiative quadratic terms. The latter ones destabilize the electroweak vacuum and generate the SM hierarchy problem. For a given perturbative Ultraviolet (UV) completion, the SM cutoff can be computed in terms of fundamental parameters. If the UV mass spectrum involves several scales the cutoff is not unique and each SM sector has its own UV cutoff $Λ_i$. We have performed this calculation assuming the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is the SM UV completion. As a result, from the SM point of view, the quadratic corrections to the Higgs mass are equivalent to finite threshold contributions. For the measured values of the top quark and Higgs masses, and depending on the values of the different cutoffs $Λ_i$, these contributions can cancel even at renormalization scales as low as multi-TeV, unlike the case of a single cutoff where the cancellation only occurs at Planckian energies, a result originally obtained by Veltman. From the MSSM point of view, the requirement of stability of the electroweak minimum under radiative corrections is incorporated into the matching conditions and provides an extra constraint on the Focus Point solution to the little hierarchy problem in the MSSM. These matching conditions can be employed for precise calculations of the Higgs sector in scenarios with heavy supersymmetric fields.

Gauge mediation with light stops

The mechanism of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) solves the supersymmetric flavor problem although it requires superheavy stops to reproduce the experimental value (125 GeV) of the Higgs mass. A possible way out is to extend the MSSM Higgs sector with triplets which provide extra tree-level corrections to the Higgs mass. Triplets with neutral components getting vacuum expectation values (VEV) have the problem of generating a tree-level correction to the ρparameter. We introduce supersymmetric triplets with hypercharges Y=(0,\pm 1), with a tree-level custodial SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R global symmetry in the Higgs sector protecting the ρparameter: a supersymmetric generalization of the Georgi-Machacek model. The renormalization group running from the messenger to the electroweak scale mildly breaks the custodial symmetry. We will present realistic low-scale scenarios, their main features being a Bino-like neutralino or right-handed stau as the NLSP, light (1 TeV) stops, exotic couplings (H^\pm W^\mp Z and H^{\pm\pm} W^\mp W^\mp) absent in the MSSM and proportional to the triplet VEV, and a possible (measurable) universality breaking of the Higgs couplings λ_{WZ}= \left(g_{hWW}/g_{hWW}^{SM}\right)/ \left(g_{hZZ}/g_{hZZ}^{SM}\right)\neq 1.

GMSB with Light Stops

Gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) is an elegant mechanism to transmit supersymmetry breaking from the hidden to the MSSM observable sector, which solves the supersymmetric flavor problem. However the smallness of the generated stop mixing requires superheavy stops to reproduce the experimental value of the Higgs mass. Two possible ways out are: i) To extend GMSB by direct superpotential messenger-MSSM Yukawa couplings to generate sizeable mixing, thus reintroducing the flavor problem; ii) To extend the MSSM Higgs sector with singlets and/or triplets providing extra tree-level corrections to the Higgs mass. Singlets will not get any soft mass from GMSB and triplets will contribute to the $ρ$ parameter which could be an issue. In this paper we explore the second way by introducing extra supersymmetric triplets with hypercharges $Y=(0,\pm 1)$, with a tree-level custodial $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R$ global symmetry in the Higgs sector protecting the $ρ$ parameter: a supersymmetric generalization of the Georgi-Machacek model, dubbed as supersymmetric custodial triplet model (SCTM). The renormalization group running from the messenger to the electroweak scale mildly breaks the custodial symmetry. We will present realistic low-scale scenarios (with the NLSP being a Bino-like neutralino or the right-handed stau) based on general (non-minimal) gauge mediation and consistent with all present experimental data. Their main features are: i) Light ($\sim 1$ TeV) stops; ii) Exotic couplings ($H^\pm W^\mp Z$ and $H^{\pm\pm} W^\mp W^\mp$) absent in the MSSM and proportional to the triplets VEV, $v_Δ$; and, iii) A possible (measurable) universality breaking of the Higgs couplings $λ_{WZ}=r_{WW}/r_{ZZ}\neq 1$.

On light dilaton extensions of the Standard Model

We discuss the presence of a light dilaton in Conformal Field Theories deformed by a single scalar operator, in the holographic realization consisting of confining Renormalization Group flows. Then, we apply this formalism to study the extension of the Standard Model with a light dilaton in a 5D warped model. We study the spectrum of scalar and vector perturbations, compare the model predictions with Electroweak Precision Tests and find the corresponding bounds for the lightest modes. Finally, we analyze the possibility that the Higgs resonance found at the LHC be a dilaton.

Sequestered gravity in gauge mediation

We present a novel mechanism of supersymmetry breaking embeddable in string theory and simultaneously sharing the main advantages of (sequestered) gravity and gauge mediation. It is driven by a Scherk-Schwarz deformation along a compact extra dimension, transverse to a D-brane stack supporting the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. This fixes the magnitude of the gravitino mass, together with that of the gauginos of a bulk gauge group, at a scale as high as $10^{10}$ GeV. Supersymmetry breaking is mediated to the observable sector dominantly by gauge interactions using massive messengers transforming non-trivially under the bulk and Standard Model gauge groups and leading to a neutralino LSP as dark matter candidate. The Higgsino mass $μ$ and soft Higgs-bilinear B$μ$-term could be generated at the same order of magnitude as the other soft terms by effective supergravity couplings as in the Giudice-Masiero mechanism.

The Diboson Excess: Experimental Situation and Classification of Explanations; A Les Houches Pre-Proceeding

We examine the `diboson' excess at $\sim 2$ TeV seen by the LHC experiments in various channels. We provide a comparison of the excess significances as a function of the mass of the tentative resonance and give the signal cross sections needed to explain the excesses. We also present a survey of available theoretical explanations of the resonance, classified in three main approaches. Beyond that, we discuss methods to verify the anomaly, determining the major properties of the various surpluses and exploring how different models can be discriminated. Finally, we give a tabular summary of the numerous explanations, presenting their main phenomenological features.

Electroweak and supersymmetry breaking from the Higgs discovery

We will explore the consequences on the electroweak breaking condition, the mass of supersymmetric partners and the scale at which supersymmetry is broken, for arbitrary values of the supersymmetric parameters tan(beta) and the stop mixing X_t, which follow from the Higgs discovery with a mass m_H\simeq 126 GeV at the LHC. Within the present uncertainty on the top quark mass we deduce that radiative breaking requires tan(beta) \gtrsim 7 for maximal mixing X_t\simeq \sqrt{6}, and tan(beta) \gtrsim 20 for small mixing X_t\lesssim 1. The scale at which supersymmetry is broken \mathcal M can be of order the unification or Planck scale only for large values of tan(beta) and negligible mixing X_t\simeq 0. On the other hand for maximal mixing and large values of tan(beta) supersymmetry should break at scales as low as \mathcal M\simeq 10^5 GeV. The uncertainty in those predictions stemming from the uncertainty in the top quark mass, i.e. the top Yukawa coupling, is small (large) for large (small) values of tan(beta). In fact for tan(beta)=1 the uncertainty on the value of \mathcal M is of several orders of magnitude.

Focus Point in the Light Stop Scenario

The recent discovery of a light CP-even Higgs in a region of masses consistent with the predictions of models with low energy supersymmetry have intensified the discussion of naturalness in these situations. The focus point solution alleviates the MSSM fine tuning problem. In a previous work, we showed the general form of the MSSM focus point solution, for different values of the messenger scale and of the ratio of gaugino and scalar masses. Here we study the possibility of inducing a light stop as a result of the renormalization group running from high energies. This scenario is highly predictive and leads to observables that may be constrained by future collider and flavor physics data.

preprint2014arXiv

General Focus Point in the MSSM

The minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (SM) is a well motivated scenario for physics beyond the SM, which allows a perturbative description of the theory up to scales of the order of the Grand Unification scale, where gauge couplings unify. The Higgs mass parameter is insensitive to the ultraviolet physics and is only sensitive to the scale of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters. Present collider bounds suggest that the characteristic values of these parameters may be significantly larger than the weak scale. Large values of the soft breaking parameters, however, induce large radiative corrections to the Higgs mass parameter and therefore the proper electroweak scale may only be obtained by a fine tuned cancellation between the square of the holomorphic μ-parameter and the Higgs supersymmetry breaking square mass parameter. This can only be avoided if there is a correlation between the scalar and gaugino mass parameters, such that the Higgs supersymmetry breaking parameter remains of the order of the weak scale. The scale at which this happens is dubbed as focus point. In this article, we define the general conditions required for this to happen, for different values of the messenger scale at which supersymmetry breaking is transmitted to the observable sector, and for arbitrary boundary conditions of the sfermion, gaugino, and Higgs mass parameters. Specific supersymmetry breaking scenarios in which these correlations may occur are also discussed.

Supersymmetric Custodial Higgs Triplets and the Breaking of Universality

Higgs triplet models are known to have difficulties obtaining agreement with electroweak precision data and in particular constraints on the $ρ$ parameter. Either a global $SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R$ symmetry has to be imposed on the scalar potential at the electroweak scale, as done in the well-known Georgi-Machacek (GM) model, or the triplet vacuum expectation values must be very small. We construct a supersymmetric model that can satisfy constraints on the $ρ$ parameter, even if these two conditions are not fulfilled. We supersymmetrize the GM model by imposing the $SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R$ symmetry at a scale $\mathcal M$, which we argue should be at or above the messenger scale, where supersymmetry breaking is transmitted to the observable sector. We show that scales $\mathcal M$ well above 100 TeV and sizable contributions from the triplets to electroweak symmetry breaking can be comfortably accommodated. We discuss the main phenomenological properties of the model and demonstrate that the departure from custodial symmetry at the electroweak scale, due to radiative breaking, can show up at the LHC as a deviation in the `universal' relation for the Higgs couplings to $WW$ and $ZZ$. As a by-product of supersymmetry, we also show that one can easily obtain both large tree-level \emph{and} one loop corrections to the Higgs mass. This allows for stops that can be significantly lighter and with smaller mixing than those needed in the MSSM.

A Light Supersymmetric Higgs Sector Hidden by a Standard Model-like Higgs

Extending the Higgs sector of the MSSM by triplets alleviates the little hierarchy problem and naturally allows for enhancements in the diphoton decay rate of the lightest CP-even Higgs h. In the present paper we analyze in detail the Higgs phenomenology of this theory with m_h~126 GeV. We mostly focus on a light Higgs sector where the pseudoscalar A, the next-to-lightest CP-even scalar H and the charged H^\pm Higgses are naturally at the electroweak scale. It turns out that for any value m_A > m_h there is a parameter region at small tan(beta) where the CP-even Higgs sector appears at colliders as the SM one, except for loop-induced corrections. Notably the existence of this SM-like point, which is absent in the MSSM, is shared with supersymmetric theories where there are extra singlets. We also highlight a second parameter region at small m_A and small tan(beta) where the h signal strengths, diphoton channel included, are SM-like except those of bottoms and taus which can have at most a 10-15 % splitting. Improvements in the A and H^\pm searches are worthwhile in order to discriminate this scenario from the SM.

Higgs Bosons in Extra Dimensions

In this paper, motivated by the recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson at the LHC with a mass m_H\simeq 126 GeV, we review different models where the hierarchy problem is solved by means of a warped extra dimension. In the Randall-Sundrum model electroweak observables provide very strong bounds on the mass of KK modes which motivates extensions to overcome this problem. Two extensions are briefly discussed. One particular extension is based on the deformation of the metric such that it strongly departs from the AdS_5 structure in the IR region while it goes asymptotically to AdS_5 in the UV brane. This model has the IR brane close to a naked metric singularity (which is outside the physical interval) characteristic of soft-walls constructions. The proximity of the singularity provides a strong wave-function renormalization for the Higgs field which suppresses the T and S parameters. The second class of considered extensions are based on the introduction of an extra gauge group in the bulk such that the custodial SU(2)_R symmetry is gauged and protects the T parameter. By further enlarging the bulk gauge symmetry one can find models where the Higgs is identified with the fifth component of gauge fields and for which the Higgs potential, along with the Higgs mass, can be dynamically determined by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism.

MSSM Electroweak Baryogenesis and LHC Data

Electroweak baryogenesis is an attractive scenario for the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe as its realization depends on the presence at the weak scale of new particles which may be searched for at high energy colliders. In the MSSM it may only be realized in the presence of light stops, and with moderate or small mixing between the left- and right-handed components. Consistency with the observed Higgs mass around 125 GeV demands the heavier stop mass to be much larger than the weak scale. Moreover the lighter stop leads to an increase of the gluon-gluon fusion Higgs production cross section which seems to be in contradiction with indications from current LHC data. We show that this tension may be considerably relaxed in the presence of a light neutralino with a mass lower than about 60 GeV, satisfying all present experimental constraints. In such a case the Higgs may have a significant invisible decay width and the stop decays through a three or four body decay channel, including a bottom quark and the lightest neutralino in the final state. All these properties make this scenario testable at a high luminosity LHC.

Neutrino Mixing from Wilson Lines in Warped Space

We consider the generation of the hierarchical charged lepton spectrum and anarchic neutrino masses and mixing angles in warped extra dimensional models with Randall-Sundrum metric. We have classified all possible cases giving rise to realistic spectra for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. An anarchic neutrino spectrum requires a convenient bulk symmetry broken by boundary conditions on both UV and IR branes. We have in particular considered the case of Majorana neutrinos with a continuous bulk symmetry. To avoid unwanted massless extra gauge bosons the 4D group should be empty. If the 4D coset is not vanishing it can provide a Wilson Line description of the neutrino Majorana mass matrix. We have studied an example based on the bulk gauge group U(3)_{L} \otimes U(3)_{N} \otimes_{i} U(1)_{E^i} with the Wilson Line in SO(3)_{N} satisfying all required conditions. A χ^2-fit to experimental data exhibits the 95% CL region in the parameter space with no fine-tuning. As a consequence of the symmetries of the theory there is no tree-level induced lepton flavor violation and so one-loop processes are consistent with experimental data for KK-modes about a few TeV. The model is easily generalizable to models with IR deformed metrics with similar conclusions.

On the Veltman Condition, the Hierarchy Problem and High-Scale Supersymmetry

In this paper we have considered the possibility that the Standard Model, and its minimal extension with the addition of singlets, merges with a high-scale supersymmetric theory at a scale satisfying the Veltman condition and therefore with no sensitivity to the cutoff. The matching of the Standard Model is achieved at Planckian scales. In its complex singlet extension the matching scale depends on the strength of the coupling between the singlet and Higgs fields. For order one values of the coupling, still in the perturbative region, the matching scale can be located in the TeV ballpark. Even in the absence of quadratic divergences there remains a finite adjustment of the parameters in the high-energy theory which should guarantee that the Higgs and the singlets in the low-energy theory are kept light. This fine-tuning (unrelated to quadratic divergences) is the entire responsibility of the ultraviolet theory and remains as the missing ingredient to provide a full solution to the hierarchy problem.

Supersymmetric Custodial Triplets

We analyze the extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model which includes extra Y=(0,\pm 1) supersymmetric triplets with a global SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R symmetry spontaneousy broken to the custodial SU(2)_V by the vacuum expectation value of the neutral scalar components of doublets and triplets. The model is the supersymmetrization of the non-supersymmetric model introduced long ago by Georgi and Machacek where the ρ-parameter is kept to unity at the tree-level by the custodial symmetry. Accordingly the scalar sector is classified into degenerate SU(2)_V multiplets: singlets, triplets (including the one containing the Godstone bosons) and fiveplets. The singly and doubly charged chiral superfields play a key role in the unitarization of the theory. The couplings of the Standard Model-like Higgs to vector bosons (including γγ) and fermions, and the corresponding Higgs signal strengths, are in agreement with LHC experimental data for a large region of the parameter space. Breaking of custodial invariance by radiative corrections suggests a low-scale mechanism of supersymmetry breaking.

Unitarity and singular backgrounds

We compute the graviton Kaluza-Klein spectrum on a gravity-dilaton background with a naked singularity for all possible boundary conditions at the singularity which are consistent with unitary evolution. We apply methods from non-relativistic quantum mechanics with singular Schrödinger potentials. In general the spectrum contains a tachyon, a sign of instability. Only for a particular boundary condition at the singularity is the spectrum free of tachyons. In this case the lowest-lying graviton mode is massless. We argue that this result will also hold for other backgrounds with similar geometry near the curvature singularity. We complete our study with a brief discussion on radion perturbations and the Higgs mechanism on this singular background.

Large diphoton Higgs rates from supersymmetric triplets

Recent results on Higgs searches at the LHC point towards the existence of a Higgs boson with mass of about 126 GeV whose diphoton decay rate tends to be larger than in the Standard Model. These results are in tension with natural MSSM scenarios: such a Higgs mass requires heavy (third-generation) squarks which reintroduce some amount of fine-tuning and in general the Higgs diphoton decay rate tends to follow the Standard Model result. In this paper we prove that these problems can be alleviated by introducing an extra supersymmetric triplet coupled to the Higgs in the superpotential. This superfield generates a sizeable tree-level correction to the Higgs mass so that the third generation is no longer required to be heavy, and its charged component enhances the diphoton Higgs decay rates by as much as 50% with respect to the Standard Model values. We also show that such a scenario is compatible with present electroweak precision observables.

The Light Stop Scenario from Gauge Mediation

In this paper we embed the light stop scenario, a MSSM framework which explains the baryon asymmetry of the universe through a strong first order electroweak phase transition, in a top-down approach. The required low energy spectrum consists in the light SM-like Higgs, the right-handed stop, the gauginos and the Higgsinos while the remaining scalars are heavy. This spectrum is naturally driven by renormalization group evolution starting from a heavy scalar spectrum at high energies. The latter is obtained through a supersymmetry-breaking mix of gauge mediation, which provides the scalars masses by new gauge interactions, and gravity mediation, which generates gaugino and Higgsino masses. This supersymmetry breaking also explains the μ and B_μ parameters necessary for electroweak breaking and predicts small tri-linear mixing terms A_t in agreement with electroweak baryogenesis requirements. The minimal embedding predicts a Higgs mass around its experimental lower bound and by a small extension higher masses m_H\lesssim 127 GeV can be accommodated.

Flavor Phenomenology in General 5D Warped Spaces

We have considered a general 5D warped model with SM fields propagating in the bulk and computed explicit expressions for oblique and non-oblique electroweak observables as well as for flavor and CP violating effective four-fermion operators. We have compared the resulting lower bounds on the Kaluza-Klein (KK) scale in the RS model and a recently proposed model with a metric modified towards the IR brane, which is consistent with oblique parameters without the need for a custodial symmetry. We have randomly generated 40,000 sets of O(1) 5D Yukawa couplings and made a fit of the quark masses and CKM matrix elements in both models. This method allows to identify the percentage of points consistent with a given KK mass, which in turn provides us with a measure for the required fine-tuning. Comparison with current experimental data on Rb, FCNC and CP violating operators exhibits an improved behavior of our model with respect to the RS model. In particular, allowing 10% fine-tuning the combined results point towards upper bounds on the KK gauge boson masses around 3.3 TeV in our model as compared with 13 TeV in the RS model. One reason for this improvement is that fermions in our model are shifted, with respect to fermions in the RS model, towards the UV brane thus decreasing the strength of the modifications of electroweak observables.

Improving Naturalness in Warped Models with a Heavy Bulk Higgs Boson

A Standard-Model-like Higgs boson should be light in order to comply with electroweak precision measurements from LEP. We consider five-dimensional (5D) warped models -- with a deformation of the metric in the IR region -- as UV completions of the Standard Model with a heavy Higgs boson. Provided the Higgs boson propagates in the 5D bulk the Kaluza Klein (KK) modes of the gauge bosons can compensate for the Higgs boson contribution to oblique parameters while their masses lie within the range of the LHC. The little hierarchy between KK scale and Higgs mass essentially disappears and the naturalness of the model greatly improves with respect to the AdS (Randall-Sundrum) model. In fact the fine-tuning is better than 10% for all values of the Higgs boson mass.

Magnetic Fields at First Order Phase Transition: A Threat to Electroweak Baryogenesis

The generation of the observed baryon asymmetry may have taken place during the electroweak phase transition, thus involving physics testable at LHC, a scenario dubbed electroweak baryogenesis. In this paper we point out that the magnetic field which is produced in the bubbles of a first order phase transition endangers the baryon asymmetry produced in the bubble walls. The reason being that the produced magnetic field couples to the sphaleron magnetic moment and lowers the sphaleron energy; this strengthens the sphaleron transitions inside the bubbles and triggers a more effective wash out of the baryon asymmetry. We apply this scenario to the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) where, in the absence of a magnetic field, successful electroweak baryogenesis requires the lightest CP-even Higgs and the right-handed stop masses to be lighter than about 127 GeV and 120 GeV, respectively. We show that even for moderate values of the magnetic field, the Higgs mass required to preserve the baryon asymmetry is below the present experimental bound. As a consequence electroweak baryogenesis within the MSSM should be confronted on the one hand to future measurements at the LHC on the Higgs and the right-handed stop masses, and on the other hand to more precise calculations of the magnetic field produced at the electroweak phase transition.

Suppressing Electroweak Precision Observables in 5D Warped Models

We elaborate on a recently proposed mechanism to suppress large contributions to the electroweak precision observables in five dimensional (5D) warped models, without the need for an extended 5D gauge sector. The main ingredient is a modification of the AdS metric in the vicinity of the infrared (IR) brane corresponding to a strong deviation from conformality in the IR of the 4D holographic dual. We compute the general low energy effective theory of the 5D warped Standard Model, emphasizing additional IR contributions to the wave function renormalization of the light Higgs mode. We also derive expressions for the S and T parameters as a function of a generic 5D metric and zero-mode wave functions. We give an approximate formula for the mass of the radion that works even for strong deviation from the AdS background. We proceed to work out the details of an explicit model and derive bounds for the first KK masses of the various bulk fields. The radion is the lightest new particle although its mass is already at about 1/3 of the mass of the lightest resonances, the KK states of the gauge bosons. We examine carefully various issues that can arise for extreme choices of parameters such as the possible reintroduction of the hierarchy problem, the onset of nonperturbative physics due to strong IR curvature or the creation of new hierarchies near the Planck scale. We conclude that a KK scale of 1 TeV is compatible with all these constraints.

The Least Supersymmetric Standard Model

We propose the minimal (Least) version of the Supersymmetric Standard Model which can solve the hierarchy problem in the same way as the so-called Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and presents solutions to some of its problems. Supersymmetry is broken in a secluded sector and mediated to the observable sector by messengers of a gauge group G under which the first two generations transform. The group G spontaneously breaks (almost) supersymmetrically at a scale at most a few orders of magnitude below the scale of gauge messengers M_*\sim 10^{15} GeV. By gauge mediation sfermions of the first two generations acquire supersymmetry breaking masses \hat m \sim 10 TeV. Supersymmetry breaking is also mediated by gravity which generates masses for all sfermions, Higgsinos and gauginos at the TeV scale and can provide appropriate values to the μand B_μparameters by D-term effective operators. If gravity mediation is Minimal Flavor Violating there is no supersymmetric flavor problem. In the presence of R-parity dark matter can be the lightest neutralino, as in the MSSM, and the LHC model phenomenology is characterized by the fact that only third generation squarks and sleptons are present.

Warped 5D Standard Model Consistent with EWPT

For a 5D Standard Model propagating in an AdS background with an IR localized Higgs, compatibility of bulk KK gauge modes with EWPT yields a phenomenologically unappealing KK spectrum (m > 12.5 TeV) and leads to a "little hierarchy problem". For a bulk Higgs the solution to the hierarchy problem reduces the previous bound only by sqrt(3). As a way out, models with an enhanced bulk gauge symmetry SU(2)_R x U(1)_(B-L) were proposed. In this note we describe a much simpler (5D Standard) Model, where introduction of an enlarged gauge symmetry is no longer required. It is based on a warped gravitational background which departs from AdS at the IR brane and a bulk propagating Higgs. The model is consistent with EWPT for a range of KK masses within the LHC reach.

Warped Electroweak Breaking Without Custodial Symmetry

We propose an alternative to the introduction of an extra gauge (custodial) symmetry to suppress the contribution of KK modes to the T parameter in warped theories of electroweak breaking. The mechanism is based on a general class of warped 5D metrics and a Higgs propagating in the bulk. The metrics are nearly AdS in the UV region but depart from AdS in the IR region, towards where KK fluctuations are mainly localized, and have a singularity outside the slice between the UV and IR branes. This gravitational background is generated by a bulk stabilizing scalar field which triggers a natural solution to the hierarchy problem. Depending on the model parameters, gauge-boson KK modes can be consistent with present bounds on EWPT for m > 1 TeV at 95% CL. The model contains a light Higgs mode which unitarizes the four-dimensional theory. The reduction in the precision observables can be traced back to a large wave function renormalization for this mode.

Gravitational Backreaction Effects on the Holographic Phase Transition

We study radion stabilization in the compact Randall-Sundrum model by introducing a bulk scalar field, as in the Goldberger and Wise mechanism, but (partially) taking into account the backreactions from the scalar field on the metric. Our generalization reconciles the radion potential found by Goldberger and Wise with the radion mass obtained with the so-called superpotential method where backreaction is fully considered. Moreover we study the holographic phase transition and its gravitational wave signals in this model. The improved control over backreactions opens up a large region in parameter space and leads, compared to former analysis, to weaker constraints on the rank N of the dual gauge theory. We conclude that, in the regime where the 1/N expansion is justified, the gravitational wave signal is detectable by LISA.

Soft-Wall Stabilization

We propose a general class of five-dimensional soft-wall models with AdS metric near the ultraviolet brane and four-dimensional Poincaré invariance, where the infrared scale is determined dynamically. A large UV/IR hierarchy can be generated without any fine-tuning, thus solving the electroweak/Planck scale hierarchy problem. Generically, the spectrum of fluctuations is discrete with a level spacing (mass gap) provided by the inverse length of the wall, similar to RS1 models with Standard Model fields propagating in the bulk. Moreover two particularly interesting cases arise. They can describe: (a) a theory with a continuous spectrum above the mass gap which can model unparticles corresponding to operators of a CFT where the conformal symmetry is broken by a mass gap, and; (b) a theory with a discrete spectrum provided by linear Regge trajectories as in AdS/QCD models.

Five-dimensional Massive Vector Fields and Radion Stabilization

We provide a description of the five-dimensional Higgs mechanism in supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on the orbifold S^1/Z_2 by means of the N=1 superfield formalism. Goldstone bosons absorbed by vector multiplets can come either from hypermultiplets or from gauge multiplets of opposite parity (Hosotani mechanism). Supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. In the presence of massive hypermultiplets and gauge multiplets, with different supersymmetric masses, the radion can be stabilized with positive (de Sitter) vacuum energy. The masses of vector and hypermultiplets can be fine-tuned to have zero (Minkowski) vacuum energy.

Electroweak baryogenesis and the Higgs and stop masses

In this talk we review the actual situation concerning electroweak phase transition and baryogenesis in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. A strong enough phase transition requires light Higgs and stop eigenstates. For a Higgs mass in the range 110--115 GeV, there is a stop window in the range 105--165 GeV. If the Higgs is heavier than 115 GeV, stronger constrains are imposed on the space of supersymmetric parameters. A baryon-to-entropy ratio is generated by the chargino sector provided that the $μ$ parameter has a CP-violating phase larger than $\sim$ 0.04.
