The spectrum and mass anomalous dimension of SU(2) adjoint QCD with two Dirac flavours

In this work we present the results of our investigation of \su{2} gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation (aQCD2), which belongs to the class of strongly interacting gauge theories that are of basic interest for extensions of the Standard Model. We have done numerical lattice simulations of this theory at two different values of the gauge coupling and several fermion masses. Our results include the particle spectrum and the mass anomalous dimension. The spectrum contains new exotic fermion-gluon states and flavour-singlet mesons. The mass anomalous dimension is determined from the scaling of the masses and the mode number. The remnant dependence of the universal mass ratios and mass anomalous dimension on the gauge coupling indicates the relevance of scaling corrections, such that earlier estimations for the universal fixed point value of the mass anomalous dimension are incomplete without their inclusion.

Continuum extrapolation of Ward identities in $\mathbf{\mathcal{N}=1}$ supersymmetric SU(3) Yang-Mills theory

In $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, regularised on a space-time lattice, in addition to the breaking by the gluino mass term, supersymmetry is broken explicitly by the lattice regulator. In addition to the parameter tuning in the theory, the supersymmetric Ward identities can be used as a tool to investigate lattice artefacts as well as to check whether supersymmetry can be recovered in the chiral and continuum limits. In this paper we present the numerical results of an analysis of the supersymmetric Ward identities for our available gauge ensembles at different values of the inverse gauge coupling $β$ and of the hopping parameter $κ$. The results clearly indicate that the lattice artefacts vanish in the continuum limit, confirming the restoration of supersymmetry.

Continuum limit of SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and supersymmetric gauge theories on the lattice

We summarize our investigations of several aspects of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We present our final results for SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM simulated with Wilson fermions. We also discuss the first test of the simulations of the theory with overlap gluinos. Finally, we present some recent progresses concerning the phase structure of the compactified theory on $R^3\times S^1$.

Chiral perturbation theory for three-flavour lattice QCD with isospin splitting

An important tool for the analysis of results of numerical simulations of lattice QCD is chiral perturbation theory. In Wilson chiral perturbation theory the effects of the finite lattice spacing $a$ are taken into account. In recent years the effects of isospin splitting on the masses of hadrons have been investigated in Monte Carlo simulations. Correspondingly, in this article we derive the expansions of the masses of the pseudoscalar mesons in chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order for twisted mass lattice QCD with three light quark flavours, taking the mass difference between the up and down quarks into account. The results include terms up to orders $m_q^2$ in the quark masses, $Δm^2$ in the mass splitting between up- and down quarks, and $a^2$ in the lattice spacing, respectively.

Lattice simulations of technicolour theories with adjoint fermions and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Theories with fermions in the adjoint representation have several interesting applications in extensions of the standard model. The conformal window for these theories is of particular interest for technicolour extensions. We present here our newest results for the spectrum of $N_f=2$ adjoint QCD and compare them with the predictions for a conformal behaviour. The comparison with supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, investigated with the same methods, will help to distinguish more clearly the conformal and the confining scenario. The spectrum includes additional fermionic states that are not present in QCD. We provide results for the mass of these states and discuss their phenomenological relevance. In addition we have done preliminary investigations of the singlet scalar meson state.

The light bound states of supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory

Supersymmetry provides a well-established theoretical framework for extensions of the standard model of particle physics and the general understanding of quantum field theories. We summarise here our investigations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge symmetry using the non-perturbative first-principles method of numerical lattice simulations. The strong interactions of gluons and their superpartners, the gluinos, lead to confinement, and a spectrum of bound states including glueballs, mesons, and gluino-glueballs emerges at low energies. For unbroken supersymmetry these particles have to be arranged in supermultiplets of equal masses. In lattice simulations supersymmetry can only be recovered in the continuum limit since it is explicitly broken by the discretisation. We present the first continuum extrapolation of the mass spectrum of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The results are consistent with the formation of supermultiplets and the absence of non-perturbative sources of supersymmetry breaking. Our investigations also indicate that numerical lattice simulations can be applied to non-trivial supersymmetric theories.

Partially quenched chiral perturbation theory for N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Adding a gluino mass term to N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory breaks supersymmetry softly. In order to approach the supersymmetric continuum limit in numerical simulations with the Wilson action, the bare gluino mass has to be tuned to the limit of vanishing renormalised gluino mass. This can be done efficiently by means of the mass of the adjoint pion, which is, however, an unphysical particle. We discuss how the adjoint pion can be defined in the framework of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. A relation between its mass and the mass of the gluino, analogous to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation of QCD, can be derived.

The mass of the adjoint pion in N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

In Monte Carlo simulations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory the mass of the unphysical adjoint pion, which is easily obtained numerically, is being used for the tuning to the limit of vanishing gluino mass. In this article we show how to define the adjoint pion in the framework of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory and we derive a relation between its mass and the mass of the gluino analogous to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation of QCD.

N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the lattice

Numerical simulations of supersymmetric theories on the lattice are intricate and challenging with respect to their theoretical foundations and algorithmic realisation. Nevertheless, the simulations of a four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory have made considerable improvements over the recent years. In this contribution we summarise the results of our collaboration concerning the mass spectrum of this theory. The investigation of systematic errors allows now a more precise estimate concerning the expected formation of supersymmetric multiplets of the lightest particles. These multiplets contain flavour singlet mesons, glueballs, and an additional fermionic state.

Renormalization Group Analysis of Turbulent Hydrodynamics

Turbulent hydrodynamics is characterised by universal scaling properties of its structure functions. The basic framework for investigations of these functions has been set by Kolmogorov in 1941. His predictions for the scaling exponents, however, deviate from the numbers found in experiments and numerical simulations. It is a challenge for theoretical physics to derive these deviations on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations. The renormalisation group is believed to be a very promising tool for the analysis of turbulent systems, but a derivation of the scaling properties of the structure functions has so far not been achieved. In this work, we recall the problems involved, present an approach in the framework of the exact renormalisation group to overcome them, and present first numerical results.

Towards the spectrum of low-lying particles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We present the current results of our simulations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a lattice. The masses of the gluino-glue particle, the a-eta-prime, the a-f0 meson, and the scalar glueball are obtained at finer lattice spacing than before, and extrapolations towards vanishing gluino mass are made. The calculations employ different levels of stout smearing. The statistical accuracy as well as the control of finite size effects and lattice artefacts are better than in previous investigations. Taking the statistical and systematic uncertainties into account, the extrapolations towards vanishing gluino mass of the masses of the fermionic and bosonic states in our present calculations are consistent with the formation of degenerate supermultiplets.

The gluino-glue particle and finite size effects in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

The spectrum of particles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is expected to contain a spin 1/2 bound state of gluons and gluinos, the gluino-glue particle. We study the mass of this particle in softly broken supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a lattice by means of numerical simulations. The main focus is the estimation of finite size effects. We extrapolate the mass first to the infinite volume and then to the limit of a vanishing gluino mass. The results indicate that finite size effects are tolerable on lattices of moderate size, and that remaining deviations from supersymmetry are probably due to finite lattice spacing effects.

The gluino-glue particle and relevant scales for the simulations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is in several respects different from QCD and pure Yang-Mills theory. Therefore, a reinvestigation of the scales, at which finite size effects and lattice artifacts become relevant, is necessary. Both, finite size effects and lattice artifacts, induce a breaking of supersymmetry. In view of the unexpected mass gap between bosonic and fermionic particles an estimation of these effects is essential.

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory: a step towards the continuum

The spectrum of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory presented so far shows an unexpected gap between the bosonic and fermionic masses. This finding was in contradiction with the basic requirements of supersymmetry. In this work we will present new results indicating that the mass gap is reduced at a smaller lattice spacing. Hence lattice artifacts are the most likely explanation for it. These new results have been obtained at a larger beta value and on a larger lattice.

Twisted mass chiral perturbation theory for 2+1+1 quark flavours

We present results for the masses of pseudoscalar mesons in twisted mass lattice QCD with a degenerate doublet of u and d quarks and a non-degenerate doublet of s and c quarks in the framework of next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory, including lattice effects up to O(a^2). The masses depend on the two twist angles for the light and heavy sectors. For maximal twist in both sectors, O(a)-improvement is explicitly exhibited. The mixing of flavour-neutral mesons is also discussed, and results in the literature for the case of degenerate s and c quarks are corrected.

Interfacial roughening in field theory

In the rough phase, the width of interfaces separating different phases of statistical systems increases logarithmically with the system size. This phenomenon is commonly described in terms of the capillary wave model, which deals with fluctuating, infinitely thin membranes, requiring ad hoc cut-offs in momentum space. We investigate the interface roughening from first principles in the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg model, that is renormalized field theory, in the one-loop approximation. The interface profile and width are calculated analytically, resulting in finite expressions with definite coefficients. They are valid in the scaling region and depend on the known renormalized coupling constant.

Strong coupling expansion for finite temperature Yang-Mills theory in the confined phase

We perform euclidean strong coupling expansions for Yang Mills theory on the lattice at finite temperature. After setting up the formalism for general SU(N), we compute the first few terms of the series for the free energy density and the lowest screening mass in the case of SU(2). To next-to-leading order the free energy series agrees with that of an ideal gas of glueballs. This demonstrates that in the confined phase the quasi-particles indeed correspond to the T=0 hadron excitations, as commonly assumed in hadron resonance gas models. Our result also fixes the lower integration constant for Monte Carlo calculations of the thermodynamic pressure via the integral method. In accord with Monte Carlo results, we find screening masses to be nearly temperature independent in the confined phase. This and the exponential smallness of the pressure can be understood as genuine strong coupling effects. Finally, we analyse Pade approximants to estimate the critical couplings of the phase transition, which for our short series are only ~25% accurate. However, up to these couplings the equation of state agrees quantitatively with numerical results on N_t=1-4 lattices.

The interfacial profile in two-loop order

The profile of interfaces separating different phases of statistical systems is investigated in the framework of renormalized field theory. The profile function is calculated analytically in the local potential approximation, using the effective potential to two loops. It can be interpreted as an intrinsic interfacial profile. The loop corrections to the leading tanh-type term turn out to be small. They yield a broadening of the interface.

Twisted mass lattice QCD with non-degenerate quark masses

Quantum Chromodynamics on a lattice with Wilson fermions and a chirally twisted mass term is considered in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. For two and three numbers of quark flavours, respectively, with non-degenerate quark masses the pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants are calculated in next-to-leading order including lattice effects quadratic in the lattice spacing a.

Chiral perturbation theory for twisted mass QCD

Quantum Chromodynamics on a lattice with Wilson fermions and a chirally twisted mass term for two degenerate quark flavours is considered in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. The pion masses and decay constants are calculated in next-to-leading order including terms linear in the lattice spacing a. We treat both unquenched and partially quenched QCD. We also discuss the phase structure of twisted mass lattice QCD.

On the phase structure of twisted mass lattice QCD

The introduction of a chirally twisted mass term has been proposed as an attractive approach to O(a) improvement of Quantum Chromodynamics with Wilson fermions on a lattice. For numerical simulation projects it is important to know the phase structure of the theory in the region of small quark masses. We study this question in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Generalizing the analysis of Sharpe and Singleton we find extensions of normal and Aoki phase scenarios and a possible new phase with spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry to a discrete $Z_2$.

Profile and width of rough interfaces

In the context of Landau theory and its field theoretical refinements, interfaces between coexisting phases are described by intrinsic profiles. These intrinsic interface profiles, however, are neither directly accessible by experiment nor by computer simulation as they are broadened by long-wavelength capillary waves. In this paper we study the separation of the small scale intrinsic structure from the large scale capillary wave fluctuations in the Monte Carlo simulated three-dimensional Ising model. To this purpose, a blocking procedure is applied, using the block size as a variable cutoff, and a translationally invariant method to determine the interface position of strongly fluctuating profiles on small length scales is introduced. While the capillary wave picture is confirmed on large length scales and its limit of validity is estimated, an intrinsic regime is, contrary to expectations, not observed.

Perturbation theory for the two-dimensional abelian Higgs model in the unitary gauge

In the unitary gauge the unphysical degrees of freedom of spontaneously broken gauge theories are eliminated. The Feynman rules are simpler than in other gauges, but it is non-renormalizable by the rules of power counting. On the other hand, it is formally equal to the limit $ξ\to 0$ of the renormalizable R$_ξ$-gauge. We consider perturbation theory to one-loop order in the R$_ξ$-gauge and in the unitary gauge for the case of the two-dimensional abelian Higgs model. An apparent conflict between the unitary gauge and the limit $ξ\to 0$ of the R$_ξ$-gauge is resolved, and it is demonstrated that results for physical quantities can be obtained in the unitary gauge.

Dynamical suppression of large instantons

We investigate the distribution of instanton sizes in the framework of a simplified model for ensembles of instantons. This model takes into account the non-diluteness of instantons. The infrared problem for the integration over instanton sizes is dealt with in a self-consistent manner by approximating instanton interactions by a repulsive hard core potential. This leads to a dynamical suppression of large instantons. The characteristic features of the instanton size distribution are studied by means of analytic and Monte Carlo methods. We find a power law behaviour for small sizes, consistent with the semi-classical results. At large instanton sizes the distribution decays exponentially. The results are compared with those from lattice simulations.

On the 1-loop lattice perturbation theory of the supersymmetric Ward identities

The one loop corrections to the supersymmetric Ward identities (WIs) in the discretized N=1 SU(2) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be investigated by means of lattice perturbation theory. The supersymmetry (SUSY) is explicitly broken by the lattice discretization as well as by the introduction of Wilson fermions. However, the renormalization of the supercurrent can be carried out in a scheme that restores the nominal continuum WIs. We present our work in progress which is concerned with the 1-loop renormalization of the local supercurrent, i.e. with the perturbative computation of the corresponding renormalization constants and mixing coefficients.

The Interface Tension of the Three-dimensional Ising Model in Two-loop Order

In liquid mixtures and other binary systems at low temperatures the pure phases may coexist, separated by an interface. The interface tension vanishes according to $σ= σ_0 (1 - T/T_c)^μ$ as the temperature T approaches the critical point from below. Similarly the correlation length diverges as $ξ= f_- (1 - T/T_c)^{-ν}$ in the low temperature region. For three-dimensional systems the dimensionless product $R_- = σ_0 f_-^2$ is universal. We calculate its value in the framework of field theory in d=3 dimensions by means of a saddle-point expansion around the kink solution including two-loop corrections. The result R_ = 0.1065(9), where the error is mainly due to the uncertainty in the renormalized coupling constant, is compatible with experimental data and Monte Carlo calculations.
