The spectrum and mass anomalous dimension of SU(2) adjoint QCD with two Dirac flavours

In this work we present the results of our investigation of \su{2} gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation (aQCD2), which belongs to the class of strongly interacting gauge theories that are of basic interest for extensions of the Standard Model. We have done numerical lattice simulations of this theory at two different values of the gauge coupling and several fermion masses. Our results include the particle spectrum and the mass anomalous dimension. The spectrum contains new exotic fermion-gluon states and flavour-singlet mesons. The mass anomalous dimension is determined from the scaling of the masses and the mode number. The remnant dependence of the universal mass ratios and mass anomalous dimension on the gauge coupling indicates the relevance of scaling corrections, such that earlier estimations for the universal fixed point value of the mass anomalous dimension are incomplete without their inclusion.

Dense 2-color QCD towards continuum and chiral limits

We study two-color QCD with two flavors of Wilson fermion as a function of quark chemical potential mu and temperature T, for two different lattice spacings and two different quark masses. We find that the quarkyonic region, where the behaviour of the quark number density and the diquark condensate are described by a Fermi sphere of almost free quarks distorted by a BCS gap, extends to larger chemical potentials with decreasing lattice spacing or quark mass. In both cases, the quark number density also approaches its non-interacting value. The pressure at low temperature is found to approach the Stefan-Boltzmann limit from below.

Electrical conductivity and charge diffusion in thermal QCD from the lattice

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the charge diffusion coefficient, the electrical conductivity and various susceptibilities of conserved charges, for a range of temperatures below and above the deconfinement crossover. The calculations include the contributions from up, down and strange quarks. We find that the diffusion coefficient is of the order of 1/(2πT) and has a dip around the crossover temperature. Our results are obtained with lattice simulations containing 2+1 dynamical flavours on anisotropic lattices. The Maximum Entropy Method is used to construct spectral functions from correlators of the conserved vector current.

Hadron Wavefunctions as a Probe of a Two Color Baryonic Medium

The properties of the ground state of two-color QCD at non-zero baryon chemical potential $μ$ present an interesting problem in strongly-interacting gauge theory; in particular the nature of the physically-relevant degrees of freedom in the superfluid phase in the post-onset regime $μ>m_π/2$ still needs clarification. In this study we present evidence for in-medium effects at high $μ$ by studying the wavefunctions of mesonic and diquark states using orthodox lattice simulation techniques, made possible by the absence of a Sign Problem for the model with $N_f=2$. Our results show that beyond onset the spatial extent of hadrons decreases as $μ$ grows, and that the wavefunction profiles are consistent with the existence of a dynamically-gapped Fermi surface in this regime.

Lattice simulations of technicolour theories with adjoint fermions and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Theories with fermions in the adjoint representation have several interesting applications in extensions of the standard model. The conformal window for these theories is of particular interest for technicolour extensions. We present here our newest results for the spectrum of $N_f=2$ adjoint QCD and compare them with the predictions for a conformal behaviour. The comparison with supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, investigated with the same methods, will help to distinguish more clearly the conformal and the confining scenario. The spectrum includes additional fermionic states that are not present in QCD. We provide results for the mass of these states and discuss their phenomenological relevance. In addition we have done preliminary investigations of the singlet scalar meson state.

The Charmonium Potential at Non-Zero Temperature

The potential between charm and anti-charm quarks is calculated non-perturbatively using physical, rather than static quarks at temperatures on both sides of the deconfinement transition $T_{\rm C}$, using a lattice simulation with 2+1 dynamical quark flavours. We used the HAL QCD time-dependent method, originally developed for inter-nucleon potentials. Our lattices are anisotropic, with temporal lattice spacing less than the spatial one which enhances the information content of our correlators at each temperature. Local-extended charmonium correlators were calculated efficiently by contracting propagators in momentum rather than coordinate space. We find no significant variation in the central potential for temperatures in the confined phase. As the temperature increases into the deconfinement phase, the potential flattens, consistent with the expected weakening interaction. We fit the potential to both the (a) Cornell and (b) Debye-screened potential forms, with the latter better reproducing the data. The zero temperature string tension obtained from (a) agrees with results obtained elsewhere, and it decreases with temperature, but at a slower rate than from the static quark approximation. The Debye mass from (b) is close to zero for small temperatures, but starts to increase rapidly around $T_{\rm C}$. The spin-dependent potential is found to have a repulsive core and a distinct temperature dependence above $T_{\rm C}$ at distances $\sim 1$ fm.

The light bound states of supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory

Supersymmetry provides a well-established theoretical framework for extensions of the standard model of particle physics and the general understanding of quantum field theories. We summarise here our investigations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge symmetry using the non-perturbative first-principles method of numerical lattice simulations. The strong interactions of gluons and their superpartners, the gluinos, lead to confinement, and a spectrum of bound states including glueballs, mesons, and gluino-glueballs emerges at low energies. For unbroken supersymmetry these particles have to be arranged in supermultiplets of equal masses. In lattice simulations supersymmetry can only be recovered in the continuum limit since it is explicitly broken by the discretisation. We present the first continuum extrapolation of the mass spectrum of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The results are consistent with the formation of supermultiplets and the absence of non-perturbative sources of supersymmetry breaking. Our investigations also indicate that numerical lattice simulations can be applied to non-trivial supersymmetric theories.

Two-color QCD at high density

QCD at high chemical potential has interesting properties such as deconfinement of quarks. Two-color QCD, which enables numerical simulations on the lattice, constitutes a laboratory to study QCD at high chemical potential. Among the interesting properties of two-color QCD at high density is the diquark condensation, for which we present recent results obtained on a finer lattice compared to previous studies. The quark propagator in two-color QCD at non-zero chemical potential is referred to as the Gor'kov propagator. We express the Gor'kov propagator in terms of form factors and present recent lattice simulation results.

2+1 flavour thermal studies on an anisotropic lattice

The FASTSUM collaboration has initiated a detailed study of thermal QCD using 2+1 flavours of improved Wilson quarks on anisotropic lattices. Spatial volumes of (3fm)^3 and (4fm)^3 are used at fixed cut-off with temperatures ranging from 40 to 350 MeV (corresponding to temporal lattice extents of 128 to 16 lattice units). Results presented here include the deconfinement temperature and a study of the restoration of chiral symmetry, together with a brief summary of our collaboration's other results from these ensembles.

Charmonium Potentials At Non-Zero Temperature

The charmonium potential at non-zero temperature has been studied using gauge configurations with anisotropic lattices and 2+1 dynamical flavors of light sea quarks. We use the HAL QCD time-dependent method developed for the study of nucleon-nucleon potentials. To serve as in-put, local-extended charmonium correlators were calculated. The results are consistent with the expectation that the potential between heavy quarks should become deconfining at high temperatures.

Determination of Karsch Coefficients for 2-colour QCD

We give an update of results from two-colour, two-flavour QCD. Using a Wilson fermion action we calculate thermodynamic quantities as a function of chemical potential μ. Calculating the Karsch Coefficients non-perturbatively gives us access to the derivative method. Compared to our previously published results, we have improved our analysis leading to revised and more accurate estimates for the renormalised energy density, pressure and the trace anomaly.

Electrical conductivity of the quark-gluon plasma across the deconfinement transition

A lattice calculation is presented for the electrical conductivity of the QCD plasma with 2+1 dynamical flavours at nonzero temperature. We employ the conserved lattice current on anisotropic lattices using a tadpole-improved clover action and study the behaviour of the conductivity over a wide range of temperatures, both below and above the deconfining transition. The conductivity is extracted from a spectral-function analysis using the Maximal Entropy Method and a discussion of its systematics is provided.

Localised distributions and criteria for correctness in complex Langevin dynamics

Complex Langevin dynamics can solve the sign problem appearing in numerical simulations of theories with a complex action. In order to justify the procedure, it is important to understand the properties of the real and positive distribution, which is effectively sampled during the stochastic process. In the context of a simple model, we study this distribution by solving the Fokker-Planck equation as well as by brute force and relate the results to the recently derived criteria for correctness. We demonstrate analytically that it is possible that the distribution has support in a strip in the complexified configuration space only, in which case correct results are expected.

In order to justify the procedure, it is important to understand the properties of the real and positive distribution, which is effectively sampled during the stochastic process. In the context of a simple model, we study this distribution and relate the results to the recently derived criteria for correctness. We demonstrate analytically that if the distribution has support only on a strip in the complexified configuration space, correct results are expected.

Quark-gluon plasma phenomenology from the lattice

The FASTSUM Collaboration has calculated several quantities relevant for QCD studies at non-zero temperature using the lattice technique. We report here our results for the (i) interquark potential in charmonium; (ii) bottomonium spectral functions; and (iii) electrical conductivity. All results were obtained with 2+1 flavours of dynamical fermions on an anisotropic lattice which allows greater resolution in the temporal direction.

Towards the phase diagram of dense two-color matter

We study two-color QCD with two flavors of Wilson fermion as a function of quark chemical potential mu and temperature T. We find evidence of a superfluid phase at intermediate mu and low T where the quark number density and diquark condensate are both very well described by a Fermi sphere of nearly-free quarks disrupted by a BCS condensate. Our results suggest that the quark contribution to the energy density is negative (and balanced by a positive gauge contribution), although this result is highly sensitive to details of the energy renormalisation. We also find evidence that the chiral condensate in this region vanishes in the massless limit. This region gives way to a region of deconfined quark matter at higher T and mu, with the deconfinement temperature, determined from the renormalised Polyakov loop, decreasing only very slowly with increasing chemical potential. The quark number susceptibility chi_q does not exhibit any qualitative change at the deconfinement transition. We argue that this is because chi_q is not an appropriate measure of deconfinement for 2-color QCD at high density.

Transport coefficients of the QGP

The FASTSUM collaboration presents a study on the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity $σ$ in the quark-gluon plasma, using the methods of lattice QCD. Correlators of the exactly conserved vector current are measured at different temperatures across the deconfinement transition, using ensembles of $2+1$ flavours of dynamical fermions on anisotropic lattices. We then employ bayesian methods (MEM) to extract the relevant spectral functions, which are found to be consistent with $σ/T$ rising as a function of $T$. The robustness of the results is verified by a detailed analysis of the systematics involved in the bayesian reconstruction of the spectral functions.

A comparison of analysis techniques for extracting resonance parameters from lattice Monte Carlo data

Different methods for extracting resonance parameters from Euclidean lattice field theory are tested. Monte Carlo simulations of the O(4) non-linear sigma model are used to generate energy spectra in a range of different volumes both below and above the inelastic threshold. The applicability of the analysis methods in the elastic region is compared. Problems which arise in the inelastic region are also emphasised.

Phase structure of QC2D at high temperature and density

We study two-color QCD with two flavors of Wilson fermion as a function of quark chemical potential mu and temperature T. We find evidence of a superfluid phase at intermediate mu and low T where the quark number density and diquark condensate are both very well described by a Fermi sphere of nearly-free quarks disrupted by a BCS condensate. This gives way to a region of deconfined quark matter at higher T and mu, with the deconfinement temperature decreasing only very slowly with increasing chemical potential. We find that heavy quarkonium bound states persist in the S-wave channels at all T and mu, with an energy reflecting the phase structure. P-wave states appear not to survive in the quarkyonic region.

Quark number susceptibility at finite density and low temperature

We study the quark number susceptibility in SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two Wilson quark flavours at non-zero chemical potential and low temperature. We present some technical aspects of the issue and numerical results obtained at different lattices and different parameters. We discuss what this observable can teach us about the phase diagram of the model and in particular about the relation between susceptibility and Polyakov loop

Hadronic decay width from finite-volume energy spectrum in lattice QCD

The standard approach to determine the parameters of a resonance is based on the study of the volume dependence of the energy spectrum. In this work we study a non-linear sigma model coupled to a scalar field in which a resonance emerges. Using an analysis method introduced recently, based on the concept of probability distribution, it is possible to determine the mass and the width of the resonance.

The conformal anomaly of k-strings

Simple scaling properties of correlation functions of a confining gauge theory in d-dimensions lead to the conclusion that k-string dynamics is described, in the infrared limit, by a two-dimensional conformal field theory with conformal anomaly c=(d-2)T_k/T_1, where T_k is the k-string tension. This result applies to any gauge theory with stable k-strings. We check it in a 3D Z_4 gauge model at finite temperature, where a string effect directly related to c can be clearly identified.

preprint2006arXiv

Quantum broadening of k-strings in gauge theories

We study the thickness of the confining flux tube generated by a pair of sources in higher representations of the gauge group. Using a simple geometric picture we argue that the area of the cross-section of the flux tube, as measured by a Wilson loop probe, grows logarithmically with source separation, as a consequence of the quantum fluctuations of the underlying k-string. The slope of the logarithm turns out to be universal, i.e. it is the same for all the representations and all the gauge theories. We check these predictions in a 3D Z_4 lattice gauge model by comparing the broadening of the 1-string and the 2-string.
