An Analytic Application of Geometric Invariant Theory II: Coarse Moduli Spaces

In [arXiv:2008.04625] the authors constructed a classifying space for polystable holomorphic vector bundles on a compact Kähler manifold using analytic GIT theory. The aim of this article is to show that this classifying space taken in the weakly normal category is a coarse moduli space in the sense of complex geometry when the topology is fixed as induced by the space of Hermite-Einstein connections modulo the group of unitary gauge transformations.

Deformation Theory of Holomorphic Cartan Geometries, II

In this continuation of \cite{BDS}, we investigate the deformations of holomorphic Cartan geometries where the underlying complex manifold is allowed to move. The space of infinitesimal deformations of a flat holomorphic Cartan geometry is computed. We show that the natural forgetful map, from the infinitesimal deformations of a flat holomorphic Cartan geometry to the infinitesimal deformations of the underlying flat principal bundle on the topological manifold, is an isomorphism.

Polystability and the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence

Using a quasi-linear version of Hodge theory, holomorphic vector bundles in a neighbourhood of a given polystable bundle on a compact Kaehler manifold are shown to be (poly)stable if and only if their corresponding classes are (poly)stable in the sense of geometric invariant theory with respect to the linear action of the automorphism group of the bundle on its space of infinitesimal deformations.

A criterion for a degree-one holomorphic map to be a biholomorphism

Let $X$ and $Y$ be compact connected complex manifolds of the same dimension with $b_2(X)= b_2(Y)$. We prove that any surjective holomorphic map of degree one from $X$ to $Y$ is a biholomorphism. A version of this was established by the first two authors, but under an extra assumption that $\dim H^1(X {\mathcal O}_X)\,=\,\dim H^1(Y {\mathcal O}_Y)$. We show that this condition is actually automatically satisfied.

The Weil-Petersson current for moduli of vector bundles and applications to orbifolds

We investigate stable holomorphic vector bundles on a compact complex Kähler manifold and more generally on an orbifold that is equipped with a Kähler structure. We use the existence of Hermite-Einstein connections in this set-up and construct a generalized Weil-Petersson form on the moduli space of stable vector bundles with fixed determinant bundle. We show that the Weil-Petersson form extends as a (semi-)positive closed current for degenerating families that are restrictions of coherent sheaves. Such an extension will be called a Weil-Petersson current. When the orbifold is of Hodge type, there exists a determinant line bundle on the moduli space; this line bundle carries a Quillen metric, whose curvature coincides with the generalized Weil-Petersson form. As an application we show that the determinant line bundle extends to a suitable compactification of the moduli space.

Curvature of higher direct image sheaves

Given a family $(F,h) \to X \times S$ of Hermite-Einstein bundles on a compact Kähler manifold $(X,g)$ we consider the higher direct image sheaves $R^q p_* \mathcal{O}(F)$ on $S$, where $p: X \times S \to S$ is the projection. On the complement of an analytic subset these sheaves are locally free and carry a natural metric, induced by the $L_2$ inner product of harmonic forms on the fibers. We compute the curvature of this metric which has a simpler form for families with fixed determinant and families of endomorphism bundles. Furthermore, we discuss the metric for moduli spaces of stable vector bundles.

Deligne pairing and Quillen metric

Let $X\rightarrow S$ be a smooth projective surjective morphism of relative dimension $n$, where $X$ and $S$ are integral schemes over $\mathbb C$. Let $L\rightarrow X$ be a relatively very ample line bundle. For every sufficiently large positive integer $m$, there is a canonical isomorphism of the Deligne pairing $\langle L ,\cdots , L\rangle\rightarrow S$ with the determinant line bundle ${\rm Det}((L- {\mathcal O}_{X})^{\otimes (n+1)}\otimes L^{\otimes m})$ \cite{PRS}. If we fix a hermitian structure on $L$ and a relative Kähler form on $X$, then each of the line bundles ${\rm Det}((L- {\mathcal O}_{X})^{\otimes (n+1)}\otimes L^{\otimes m})$ and $\langle L\, ,\cdots\, ,L\rangle$ carries a distinguished hermitian structure. We prove that the above mentioned isomorphism between $\langle L\, ,\cdots\, ,L\rangle\longrightarrow S$ and ${\rm Det}((L- {\mathcal O}_{X})^{\otimes (n+1)}\otimes L^{\otimes m})$ is compatible with these hermitian structures. This holds also for the isomorphism in \cite{BSW} between a Deligne paring and a certain determinant line bundle.

Kähler structure on Hurwitz spaces

The classical Hurwitz spaces, that parameterize compact Riemann surfaces equipped with covering maps to ${\mathbb P}_1$ of fixed numerical type with simple branch points, are extensively studied in the literature. We apply deformation theory, and present a study of the Kähler structure of the Hurwitz spaces, which reflects the variation of the complex structure of the Riemann surface as well as the variation of the meromorphic map. We introduce a generalized Weil-Petersson Kähler form on the Hurwitz space. This form turns out to be the curvature of a Quillen metric on a determinant line bundle. Alternatively, the generalized Weil-Petersson Kähler form can be characterized as the curvature form of the hermitian metric on the Deligne pairing of the relative canonical line bundle and the pull back of the anti-canonical line bundle on ${\mathbb P}_1$. Replacing the projective line by an arbitrary but fixed curve $Y$, we arrive at a generalized Hurwitz space with similar properties. The determinant line bundle extends to a compactification of the (generalized) Hurwitz space as a line bundle, and the Quillen metric yields a singular hermitian metric on the compactification so that a power of the determinant line bundle provides an embedding of the Hurwitz space in a projective space.

Positivity of relative canonical bundles and applications

Given a family $f:\mathcal X \to S$ of canonically polarized manifolds, the unique Kähler-Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle $\mathcal K_{\mathcal X/S}$. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive on $\mathcal X$, unless the family is infinitesimally trivial. For degenerating families we show that the curvature form on the total space can be extended as a (semi-)positive closed current. By fiber integration it follows that the generalized Weil-Petersson form on the base possesses an extension as a positive current. We prove an extension theorem for hermitian line bundles, whose curvature forms have this property. This theorem can be applied to a determinant line bundle associated to the relative canonical bundle on the total space. As an application the quasi-projectivity of the moduli space $\mathcal M_{\text{can}}$ of canonically polarized varieties follows. The direct images $R^{n-p}f_*Ω^p_{\mathcal X/S}(\mathcal K_{\mathcal X/S}^{\otimes m})$, $m > 0$, carry natural hermitian metrics. We prove an explicit formula for the curvature tensor of these direct images. We apply it to the morphisms $S^p \mathcal T_S \to R^pf_*Λ^p\mathcal T_{\mathcal X/S}$ that are induced by the Kodaira-Spencer map and obtain a differential geometric proof for hyperbolicity properties of $\mathcal M_{\text{can}}$.

Curvature of higher direct images and applications (Curvature of $R^{n-p}f_*Ω^p_{X/S}(K_{X/S}^{\otimes m})$ and applications)

Given an effectively parameterized family $f:X\to S$ of canonically polarized manifolds, the Kähler-Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle $K_{X/S}$. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive everywhere and give estimates. The direct images $R^{n-p}f_*Ω^p_{X/S}(K_{X/S}^{\otimes m})$, $m > 0$, carry induced natural hermitian metrics. We prove an explicit formula for the curvature tensor of these direct images with estimates, which implies Nakano-positivity for $p=n$. The Kodaira-Spencer map induces morphisms $S^p\mathcal T_S \to R^p f_*Λ^p T_{X/S}$. For a suitable value of $p$ (and $\dim S=1$) a natural hermitian metric on $T_S$ of negative curvature is induced. A differential geometric proof for hyperbolicity properties of the moduli space follows.

Positivity of relative canonical bundles for families of canonically polarized manifolds

Given an effectively parameterized family of canonically polarized manifolds the Kaehler-Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive. For degenerating families we obtain a singular hermitian metric. Main application is an analytic proof of the quasi-projectivity of the moduli space of canonically polarized manifolds. Further applications in arXiv:1002.4858v2.

On the Hyperbolicity of the Complements of Curves in Algebraic Surfaces: The Three Component Case

The paper is a contribution to the conjecture of Kobayashi that the complement of a generic curve in the projective plane is hyperbolic, provided the degree is at least five. Previously the authors treated the cases of two quadrics and a line and three quadrics. The main results are Let C be the union of three curves in P_2 whose degrees are at least two, one of which is at least three. Then for generic such configurations the complement of C is hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded. The same statement holds for complements of curves in generic hypersurfaces X of degree at least five and curves which are intersections of X with hypersurfaces of degree at least five. Furthermore results are shown for curves on surfaces with picard number one.
