Off-axis optical vortices using double-Raman singlet and doublet light-matter schemes

We study the formation of off-axis optical vortices propagating inside a double-Raman gain atomic medium. The atoms interact with two weak probe fields as well as two strong pump beams which can carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). We consider a situation when only one of the strong pump lasers carries an OAM. A particular superposition of probe fields coupled to the matter is shown to form specific optical vortices with shifted axes. Such off-axis vortices can propagate inside the medium with sub- or superluminal group velocity depending on the value of the two-photon detuning. The superluminal optical vortices are associated with the amplification as the energy of pump fields is transferred to the probe fields. The position of the peripheral vortices can be manipulated by the OAM and intensity of the pump fields. We show that the exchange of optical vortices is possible between individual probe beams and the pump fields when the amplitude of the second probe field is zero at the beginning of the atomic cloud. The model is extended to a more complex double Raman doublet interacting with four pump fields. In contrast to the double-Raman-singlet, now the generation of the off-axis sub- or superluminal optical vortices is possible even for zero two-photon detuning.

Semi-synthetic zigzag optical lattice for ultracold bosons

We consider a one-dimensional "zigzag" lattice, pictured as a two-site wide single strip taken from a triangular lattice, affected by a tunable homogeneous magnetic flux piercing its triangular plaquettes. We focus on a semi-synthetic lattice produced by combining a one-dimensional spin-dependent lattice in the long direction with laser-induced transitions between atomic internal states that define the short synthetic dimension. In contrast to previous studies on semi-synthetic lattices, the atom-atom interactions are nonlocal in both lattice directions. We investigate the ground-state properties of the system for the case of strongly interacting bosons, and find that the interplay between the frustration induced by the magnetic field and the interactions gives rise to an exotic gapped phase at fractional filling factors corresponding to one particle per magnetic unit cell.

Supersolid with nontrivial topological spin textures in spin-orbit-coupled Bose gases

Supersolid is a long-sought exotic phase of matter, which is characterized by the coexistence of a diagonal long-range order of solid and an off-diagonal long-range order of superfluid. Possible candidates to realize such a phase have been previously considered, including hard-core bosons with long-range interaction and soft-core bosons. Here we demonstrate that an ultracold atomic condensate of hard-core bosons with contact interaction can establish a supersolid phase when simultaneously subjected to spin-orbit coupling and a spin-dependent periodic potential. This supersolid phase is accompanied by topologically nontrivial spin textures, and is signaled by the separation of momentum distribution peaks, which can be detected via time-of-flight measurements. We also discuss possibilities to produce and observe the supersolid phase for realistic experimental situations.

The role of real-space micromotion for bosonic and fermionic Floquet fractional Chern insulators

Fractional Chern insulators are the proposed phases of matter mimicking the physics of fractional quantum Hall states on a lattice without an overall magnetic field. The notion of Floquet fractional Chern insulators refers to the potential possibilities to generate the underlying topological bandstructure by means of Floquet engineering. In these schemes, a highly controllable and strongly interacting system is periodically driven by an external force at a frequency such that double tunneling events during one forcing period become important and contribute to shaping the required effective energy bands. We show that in the described circumstances it is necessary to take into account also third order processes combining two tunneling events with interactions. Referring to the obtained contributions as micromotion-induced interactions, we find that those interactions tend to have a negative impact on the stability of of fractional Chern insulating phases and discuss implications for future experiments.

Magnetically generated spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atoms

We present a new technique for producing two- and three-dimensional Rashba-type spin-orbit couplings for ultracold atoms without involving light. The method relies on a sequence of pulsed inhomogeneous magnetic fields imprinting suitable phase gradients on the atoms. For sufficiently short pulse durations, the time-averaged Hamiltonian well approximates the Rashba Hamiltonian. Higher order corrections to the energy spectrum are calculated exactly for spin-1/2 and perturbatively for higher spins. The pulse sequence does not modify the form of rotationally symmetric atom-atom interactions. Finally, we present a straightforward implementation of this pulse sequence on an atom chip.

Synthetic 3D Spin-Orbit Coupling

We describe a method for creating a three-dimensional analogue to Rashba spin-orbit coupling in systems of ultracold atoms. This laser induced coupling uses Raman transitions to link four internal atomic states with a tetrahedral geometry, and gives rise to a Dirac point that is robust against environmental perturbations. We present an exact result showing that such a spin-orbit coupling in a fermionic system always rise to a molecular bound state.

Artificial gauge potentials for neutral atoms

When a neutral atom moves in a properly designed laser field, its center-of-mass motion may mimic the dynamics of a charged particle in a magnetic field, with the emergence of a Lorentz-like force. In this Colloquium we present the physical principles at the basis of this artificial (synthetic) magnetism and relate the corresponding Aharonov-Bohm phase to the Berry's phase that emerges when the atom follows adiabatically one of its dressed states. We also discuss some manifestations of artificial magnetism for a cold quantum gas, in particular in terms of vortex nucleation. We then generalise our analysis to the simulation of non-Abelian gauge potentials and present some striking consequences, such as the emergence of an effective spin-orbit coupling. We address both the case of bulk gases and discrete systems, where atoms are trapped in an optical lattice.

Realistic Rashba and Dressehaus spin-orbit coupling for neutral atoms

We describe a new class of atom-laser coupling schemes which lead to spin-orbit coupled Hamiltonians for ultra-cold neutral atoms. By properly setting the optical phases, a pair of degenerate pseudospin states emerge as the lowest energy states in the spectrum, and are thus immune to collisionally induced decay. These schemes use $N$ cyclically coupled ground or metastable internal states. We specialize to two situations: a three level case giving fixed Rashba coupling, and a four-level case that adds a controllable Dresselhaus contribution. We describe an implementation of the four level scheme for $\Rb87$ and analyze the sensitivity of our approach to realistic experimental limitations and imperfections. Lastly, we argue that no laser coupling scheme can give pure Rashba or Dresselhaus coupling: akin to condensed matter systems, higher order terms spoil the symmetry of these couplings. However, for sufficiently intense laser fields the continuous rotational symmetry approximately holds, making the Rashba Hamiltonian applicable for cold atoms.

The non-Abelian bosonic quantum ring

We investigate the dynamics of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate which is governed by an optically induced non-Abelian gauge potential. Using a ring shaped trap to confine the atoms and a hydrodynamic ansatz, nonlinear Josephson type equations are found to describe the system. The degenerate eigenstates which show rotation are solved exactly. We consider a homogenous filled ring and observe population dynamics between the two quasi-spin components but also space dependent Josephson oscillations. Stable mass currents can be observed which are induced by the constant non-Abelian effective magnetic field in the limit of weak interactions. For strong interactions the appearance of two-component dark soliton-like objects are observed.
