Strongly regular graphs from integral point sets in even dimensional affine spaces over finite fields

In the $m$-dimensional affine space $AG(m,q)$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd order $q$, the analogous of the Euclidean distance gives rise to a graph $\mathfrak{G}_{m,q}$ where vertices are the points of $AG(m,q)$ and two vertices are adjacent if their (formal) squared Euclidean distance is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$ (including the zero). In 2009, Kurz and Meyer made the conjecture that if $m$ is even then $\mathfrak{G}_{m,q}$ is a strongly regular graph. In this paper we prove their conjecture.

Curves with more than one inner Galois point

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be an irreducible plane curve of $\text{PG}(2,\mathbb{K})$ where $\mathbb{K}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. A point $Q\in \mathcal{C}$ is an inner Galois point for $\mathcal{C}$ if the projection $π_Q$ from $Q$ is Galois. Assume that $\mathcal{C}$ has two different inner Galois points $Q_1$ and $Q_2$, both simple. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be the respective Galois groups. Under the assumption that $G_i$ fixes $Q_i$, for $i=1,2$, we provide a complete classification of $G=\langle G_1,G_2 \rangle$ and we exhibit a curve for each such $G$. Our proof relies on deeper results from group theory.

3-nets realizing a diassociative loop in a projective plane

A \textit{$3$-net} of order $n$ is a finite incidence structure consisting of points and three pairwise disjoint classes of lines, each of size $n$, such that every point incident with two lines from distinct classes is incident with exactly one line from each of the three classes. The current interest around $3$-nets (embedded) in a projective plane $PG(2,K)$, defined over a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, arose from algebraic geometry. It is not difficult to find $3$-nets in $PG(2,K)$ as far as $0<p\le n$. However, only a few infinite families of $3$-nets in $PG(2,K)$ are known to exist whenever $p=0$, or $p>n$. Under this condition, the known families are characterized as the only $3$-nets in $PG(2,K)$ which can be coordinatized by a group. In this paper we deal with $3$-nets in $PG(2,K)$ which can be coordinatized by a diassociative loop $G$ but not by a group. We prove two structural theorems on $G$. As a corollary, if $G$ is commutative then every non-trivial element of $G$ has the same order, and $G$ has exponent $2$ or $3$. We also discuss the existence problem for such $3$-nets.

The Geometry of the Artin-Schreier-Mumford Curves over an Algebraically Closed Field

For a power $q$ of a prime $p$, the Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve $ASM(q)$ of genus $g=(q-1)^2$ is the nonsingular model $\mathcal{X}$ of the irreducible plane curve with affine equation $(X^q+X)(Y^q+Y)=c,\, c\neq 0,$ defined over a field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $p$. The Artin-Schreier-Mumford curves are known from the study of algebraic curves defined over a non-Archimedean valuated field since for $|c|<1$ they are curves with a large solvable automorphism group of order $2(q-1)q^2 =2\sqrt{g}(\sqrt{g}+1)^2$, far away from the Hurwitz bound $84(g-1)$ valid in zero characteristic. In this paper we deal with the case where $\mathbb{K}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. We prove that the group $Aut(\mathcal{X})$ of all automorphisms of $\mathcal{X}$ fixing $\mathbb{K}$ elementwise has order $2q^2(q-1)$ and it is the semidirect product $Q\rtimes D_{q-1}$ where $Q$ is an elementary abelian group of order $q^2$ and $D_{q-1}$ is a dihedral group of order $2(q-1)$. For the special case $q=p$, this result was proven by Valentini and Madan. Furthermore, we show that $ASM(q)$ has a nonsingular model $\mathcal{Y}$ in the three-dimensional projective space $PG(3,\mathbb{K})$ which is neither classical nor Frobenius classical over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$.

A characterization of the Artin-Mumford curve

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be the Artin-Mumford curve over the finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$ with $p>2$. By a result of Valentini and Madan, $\mbox{Aut}_{\mathbb{F}_p}(\mathcal{M})\cong H$ with $H=(C_p\times C_p)\rtimes D_{p-1}$. We prove that if $\mathcal{X}$ is an algebraic curve of genus $g=(p-1)^2$ such that $\mbox{Aut}_{\mathbb{F}_p}(\mathcal{X})$ contains a subgroup isomorphic to $H$ then $\mathcal{X}$ is birationally equivalent over $\mathbb{F}_p$ to the Artin-Mumford curve $\mathcal{M}$.

Large $p$-groups of automorphisms of algebraic curves in characteristic $p$

Let $S$ be a $p$-subgroup of the $\mathbb K$-automorphism group $Aut(\mathcal X)$ of an algebraic curve $\mathcal X$ of genus $g\ge 2$ and $p$-rank $γ$ defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $p\geq 3$. Nakajima proved that if $γ\ge 2$ then $|S|\leq \textstyle\frac{p}{p-2}(g-1)$. If equality holds, $\mathcal X$ is a Nakajima extremal curve. We prove that if $$|S|>\textstyle\frac{p^2}{p^2-p-1}(g-1)$$ then one of the following cases occurs: (i) $γ=0$ and the extension $\mathbb K(\mathcal X)|\mathbb K(\mathcal X)^S$ completely ramifies at a unique place, and does not ramify elsewhere. (ii) $|S|=p$, and $\mathcal X$ is an ordinary curve of genus $g=p-1$. (iii) $\mathcal X$ is an ordinary, Nakajima extremal curve, and $\mathbb K(\mathcal X)$ is an unramified Galois extension of a function field of a curve given in (ii). There are exactly $p-1$ such Galois extensions. Moreover, if some of them is an abelian extension then $S$ has maximal nilpotency class. The full $\mathbb{K}$-automorphism group of any Nakajima extremal curve is determined, and several infinite families of Nakajima extremal curves are constructed by using their pro-$p$ fundamental groups.
