On the automorphism group of a family of maximal curves not covered by the Hermitian curve

In this paper we compute the automorphism group of the curves $\mathcal{X}_{a,b,n,s}$ and $\mathcal{Y}_{n,s}$ introduced in Tafazolian et al. in 2016 as new examples of maximal curves which cannot be covered by the Hermitian curve. They arise as subcovers of the first generalized GK curve (GGS curve). As a result, a new characterization of the GK curve, as a member of this family, is obtained.

On algebraic curves with many automorphisms in characteristic p

Let $\mathcal{X}$ be an irreducible, non-singular, algebraic curve defined over a field of odd characteristic $p$. Let $g$ and $γ$ be the genus and $p$-rank of $\mathcal{X}$, respectively. The influence of $g$ and $γ$ on the automorphism group $Aut(\mathcal{X})$ of $\mathcal{X}$ is well-known in the literature. If $g \geq 2$ then $Aut(\mathcal{X})$ is a finite group, and unless $\mathcal{X}$ is the so-called Hermitian curve, its order is upper bounded by a polynomial in $g$ of degree four (Stichtenoth). In 1978 Henn proposed a refinement of Stichtenoth's bound of cube order in $g$ up to few exceptions, all having $p$-rank zero. In this paper a further refinement of Henn's result is proposed. First, we prove that if an algebraic curve of genus $g \geq 2$ has more than $336g^2$ automorphisms then its automorphism group has exactly two short orbits, one tame and one non-tame. Then we show that if $|Aut(\mathcal{X})| \geq 900g^2$, the quotient curve $\mathcal{X}/Aut(\mathcal{X})_P^{(1)}$ where $P$ is contained in the non-tame short orbit is rational, and the stabilizer of 2 points is either a $p$-group or a prime-to-$p$ group, then the $p$-rank of $\mathcal{X}$ is equal to zero.

On the constant $D(q)$ defined by Homma

Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a projective, irreducible, nonsingular algebraic curve over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with $q$ elements and let $|\mathcal{X}(\mathbb{F}_q)|$ and $g(\mathcal X)$ be its number of rational points and genus respectively. The Ihara constant $A(q)$ has been intensively studied during the last decades, and it is defined as the limit superior of $|\mathcal{X}(\mathbb{F}_q)|/g(\mathcal X)$ as the genus of $\mathcal X$ goes to infinity. In 2012 Homma defined an analogue $D(q)$ of $A(q)$, where the nonsingularity of $\mathcal X$ is dropped and $g(\mathcal X)$ is replaced with the degree of $\mathcal X$. We will call $D(q)$ Homma's constant. In this paper, upper and lower bounds for the value of $D(q)$ are found.

A bound for the number of points of space curves over finite fields

For a non-degenerate irreducible curve $C$ of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, we prove that the number $N_q(C)$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points of $C$ satisfies the inequality $N_q(C) \leq (d-2)q+1$. Our result improves the previous bound $N_q(C) \leq (d-1)q+1$ obtained by Homma in 2012 and leads to a natural conjecture generalizing Sziklai's bound for the number of points of plane curves over finite fields.

Locally recoverable codes from automorphism groups of function fields of genus $g \geq 1$

A Locally Recoverable Code is a code such that the value of any single coordinate of a codeword can be recovered from the values of a small subset of other coordinates. When we have $δ$ non overlapping subsets of cardinality $r_i$ that can be used to recover the missing coordinate we say that a linear code $\mathcal{C}$ with length $n$, dimension $k$, minimum distance $d$ has $(r_1,\ldots, r_δ)$-locality and denote it by $[n, k, d; r_1, r_2,\dots, r_δ].$ In this paper we provide a new upper bound for the minimum distance of these codes. Working with a finite number of subgroups of cardinality $r_i+1$ of the automorphism group of a function field $\mathcal{F}| \mathbb{F}_q$ of genus $g \geq 1$, we propose a construction of $[n, k, d; r_1, r_2,\dots, r_δ]$-codes and apply the results to some well known families of function fields.

Weierstrass semigroups on the Skabelund maximal curve

In 2017, D. Skabelund constructed a maximal curve over $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$ as a cyclic cover of the Suzuki curve. In this paper we explicitly determine the structure of the Weierstrass semigroup at any point $P$ of the Skabelund curve. We show that its Weierstrass points are precisely the $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$-rational points. Also we show that among the Weierstrass points, two types of Weierstrass semigroup occur: one for the $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points, one for the remaining $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$-rational points. For each of these two types its Apéry set is computed as well as a set of generators.

Some Ree and Suzuki curves are not Galois covered by the Hermitian curve

The Deligne-Lusztig curves associated to the algebraic groups of type $^2A_2$, $^2B_2$, and $^2G_2$ are classical examples of maximal curves over finite fields. The Hermitian curve $\mathcal H_q$ is maximal over $\mathbb F_{q^2}$, for any prime power $q$, the Suzuki curve $\mathcal S_q$ is maximal over $\mathbb F_{q^4}$, for $q=2^{2h+1}$, $h\geq1$ and the Ree curve $\mathcal R_q$ is maximal over $\mathbb F_{q^6}$, for $q=3^{2h+1}$, $h\geq0$. In this paper we show that $\mathcal S_8$ is not Galois covered by $\mathcal H_{64}$. We also give a proof for an unpublished result due to Rains and Zieve stating that $\mathcal R_3$ is not Galois covered by $\mathcal H_{27}$. Furthermore, we determine the spectrum of genera of Galois subcovers of $\mathcal H_{27}$, and we point out that some Galois subcovers of $\mathcal R_3$ are not Galois subcovers of $\mathcal H_{27}$.

The Geometry of the Artin-Schreier-Mumford Curves over an Algebraically Closed Field

For a power $q$ of a prime $p$, the Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve $ASM(q)$ of genus $g=(q-1)^2$ is the nonsingular model $\mathcal{X}$ of the irreducible plane curve with affine equation $(X^q+X)(Y^q+Y)=c,\, c\neq 0,$ defined over a field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $p$. The Artin-Schreier-Mumford curves are known from the study of algebraic curves defined over a non-Archimedean valuated field since for $|c|<1$ they are curves with a large solvable automorphism group of order $2(q-1)q^2 =2\sqrt{g}(\sqrt{g}+1)^2$, far away from the Hurwitz bound $84(g-1)$ valid in zero characteristic. In this paper we deal with the case where $\mathbb{K}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. We prove that the group $Aut(\mathcal{X})$ of all automorphisms of $\mathcal{X}$ fixing $\mathbb{K}$ elementwise has order $2q^2(q-1)$ and it is the semidirect product $Q\rtimes D_{q-1}$ where $Q$ is an elementary abelian group of order $q^2$ and $D_{q-1}$ is a dihedral group of order $2(q-1)$. For the special case $q=p$, this result was proven by Valentini and Madan. Furthermore, we show that $ASM(q)$ has a nonsingular model $\mathcal{Y}$ in the three-dimensional projective space $PG(3,\mathbb{K})$ which is neither classical nor Frobenius classical over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$.

On maximal curves that are not quotients of the Hermitian curve

For each prime power $\ell$ the plane curve $\mathcal X_\ell$ with equation $Y^{\ell^2-\ell+1}=X^{\ell^2}-X$ is maximal over $\mathbb{F}_{\ell^6}$. Garcia and Stichtenoth in 2006 proved that $\mathcal X_3$ is not Galois covered by the Hermitian curve and raised the same question for $\mathcal X_\ell$ with $\ell>3$; in this paper we show that $\mathcal X_\ell$ is not Galois covered by the Hermitian curve for any $\ell>3$. Analogously, Duursma and Mak proved that the generalized GK curve $\mathcal C_{\ell^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{\ell^{2n}}$ is not a quotient of the Hermitian curve for $\ell>2$ and $n\ge 5$, leaving the case $\ell=2$ open; here we show that $\mathcal C_{2^n}$ is not Galois covered by the Hermitian curve over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2n}}$ for $n\geq5$.
