$Δ$L=2 hyperon decays induced by Majorana neutrinos and doubly-charged scalars

Searches for $ΔL=2$ decays are crucial to disentangle the Dirac vs Majorana nature of neutrinos. While neutrinoless nuclear double beta decays are the most promising tool to look for di-electron signals of $ΔL=2$, searches of di-lepton channels with other flavors are far less limited by statistics. We revisit the calculation of $ΔL=2$ decays of hyperons $B^-_i\to B^+_f\ell^-\ell'^-$. We compute the rates of these decays by including the hyperon form factors, which yields finite results in the one-loop model mechanism involving Majorana neutrinos (long-range contributions). In addition, we study the short-range contributions to these kinds of processes in two appealing scenarios. First, we consider the effects of heavy Majorana neutrinos in low-scale seesaw models that involve a minimal parametrization with only two heavy Majorana states. Second, we study an alternative model where $ΔL=2$ decays are induced by a scalar boson coupled to di-leptons to provide additional predictions.

Effects of heavy Majorana neutrinos on lepton flavor violating processes

The observation of lepton flavor violating processes at colliders could be a clear signal of a non-minimal neutrino sector. We define a 5-parameter model with a pair of TeV fermion singlets and arbitrary mixings with the three active neutrino flavors. Then we analyze several flavor violating transitions ($\ell\to \ell^{\prime}γ,\,\ell^{\prime}\ell^{\prime\prime}\bar{\ell}^{\prime\prime\prime}$ or $μ-e$ conversions in nuclei) and $Z\to\bar{\ell}\,\ell^{\prime}$ decays induced by the presence of heavy neutrinos. In particular, we calculate all the one-loop contributions to these processes and present their analytic expressions. We focus on the genuine effects of the heavy Majorana masses, comparing the results in that case with the ones obtained when the two heavy neutrinos define a Dirac field. Finally, we use our results to update the bounds on the heavy-light mixings in the neutrino sector.

Lepton-pair production in di-pion $τ$ lepton decays

We study the $τ^- \to ν_τ π^{-}π^{0}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ ($\ell=e,\,μ$) decays, which are $O(α^2)$-suppressed with respect to the dominant di-pion tau decay channel. Both the inner-bremsstrahlung and the structure- (and model-)dependent contributions are considered. In the $\ell=e$ case, structure-dependent effects are $\mathcal{O}(1\%)$ in the decay rate, yielding a clean prediction of its branching ratio, $2.3\times10^{-5}$, measurable with BaBar or Belle(-II) data. For $\ell=μ$, both contributions have similar magnitude and we get a branching fraction of $(1.6\pm0.3)\times10^{-7}$, reachable by the end of Belle-II operation. These decays allow to study the dynamics of strong interactions with simultaneous weak and electromagnetic probes; their knowledge will contribute to reducing backgrounds in lepton flavor/number violating searches.

Flavor violating leptonic decays of $τ$ and $μ$ leptons in the Standard Model with massive neutrinos

We have revisited the computations of the flavor violating leptonic decays of the $τ$ and $μ$ leptons into three lighter charged leptons in the Standard Model with non-vanishing neutrino masses. We were driven by a claimed unnaturally large branching ratio predicted for the $τ^-\to μ^- \ell^+ \ell^-$ ($\ell=μ, e$) decays \cite{Pham:1998fq}, which was at odds with the corresponding predictions for the $μ^-\to e^- e^-e^+$ processes \cite{Petcov:1976ff}. In contrast with the prediction in \cite{Pham:1998fq}, our results are strongly suppressed and in good agreement with the approximation done in ref.~\cite{Petcov:1976ff}, where masses and momenta of the external particles were neglected in order to deal with the loop integrals. However, as a result of keeping external momenta and masses in the computation of the dominant penguin and box diagrams- we even find slightly smaller branching fractions. Therefore, we confirm that any future observation of such processes would be an unambiguous manifestation of new physics beyond the Standard Model

Five-body leptonic decays of muon and tau leptons

We study the five-body decays $μ^- \to e^- e^+ e^- ν_μ \barν_{e}$ and $τ^- \to \ell^- \ell'^+\ell'^-ν_τ\barν_{\ell}$ for $\ell, \ell'=e, μ$ within the Standard Model (SM) and in a general effective field theory description of the weak interactions at low energies. We compute the branching ratios and compare our results with two previous, mutually discrepant, SM calculations. By assuming a general structure for the weak currents we derive the expressions for the energy and angular distributions of the three charged leptons when the decaying lepton is polarized, which will be useful in precise tests of the weak charged current at Belle II. In these decays, leptonic $\mathbf{T}$-odd correlations in triple products of spin and momenta --which may signal time reversal violation in the leptonic sector-- are suppressed by the tiny neutrino masses. Therefore, a measurement of such $\mathbf{T}$-violating observables would be associated to neutrinoless lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays, where this effect is not extremely suppressed. We also study the backgrounds that the SM five-lepton lepton decays constitute to searches of LFV $L^- \to \ell^- \ell'^+\ell'^-$ decays. Searches at high values of the invariant mass of the $\ell'^+\ell'^-$ pair look the most convenient way to overcome the background.

Radiative corrections of $O(α)$ to $B^- \rightarrow V^0 \ell^- \barν_{\ell}$ decays

The $O(α)$ electromagnetic radiative corrections to the $B^- \rightarrow V^0 \ell^- \barν_{\ell}$ ($V$ is a vector meson and $\ell$ a charged lepton) decay rates are evaluated using the cutoff method to regularize virtual corrections and incorporating intermediate resonance states in the real-photon amplitude to extend the region of validity of the soft-photon approximation. The electromagnetic and weak form factors of hadrons are assumed to vary smoothly over the energies of virtual and real photons under consideration. The cutoff dependence of radiative corrections upon the scale $Λ$ that separates the long- and short-distance regimes is found to be mild and is considered as an uncertainty of the calculation. Owing to partial cancellations of electromagnetic corrections evaluated over the three- and four-body regions of phase space, the photon-inclusive corrected rates are found to be dominated by the short-distance contribution. These corrections will be relevant for a precise determination of the $b$ quark mixing angles by testing isospin symmetry when measurements of semileptonic rates of charged and neutral $B$ mesons at the few percent level become available. For completeness, we also provide numerical values of radiative corrections in the three-body region of the Dalitz plot distributions of these decays.

A new long distance contribution to $B^\pm\to K^\pm/π^\pm\ell^+\ell-$ decays

We have identified a missing long-distance (one-photon exchange) contribution to the $B^\pm\to K^\pm/π^\pm\ell^+\ell^-$ decays. Although it does not help to explain the anomaly measured by the LHCb Coll. in the ratio $R_K = \mathcal{B}(B^\pm\to K^\pmμ^+μ^-)/\mathcal{B}(B^\pm\to K^\pm e^+e^-)\sim0.75$ (2.6 $σ$ deviation with respect to $R_K=1+\mathcal{O}(10^{-4})$ in the Standard Model), it provides a sizable contribution to the branching ratio of the $B^\pm\to π^\pm\ell^+\ell^-$ decays. The new decay mechanism gives rise to a measurable CP asymmetry, which is of order 1\% in both channels. These predictions can be tested in forthcoming LHCb measurements.

Long-distance weak annihilation contribution to the $B^{\pm}\to (π^{\pm},K^{\pm}) \ell^+\ell^-$ decays

We propose an alternative evaluation of the long-distance weak annihilation (WA, also called one-photon exchange in this paper) contribution to the rare semileptonic $B^{\pm}\to (π^{\pm},K^{\pm})\ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell=e,\,μ$) decays. This hadronic description at low energies is matched at intermediate energies to its short-distance counterpart in terms of quark and gluon degrees of freedom. Although the WA contribution does not contribute to solve the possible breaking of lepton-universality observed by LHCb in the $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}(μ^+μ^-/e^+e^-)$ ratio, nor provides an important hadronic contamination to their decay rates, its contribution to the branching ratios (and direct CP asymmetry) of the $B^{\pm}\to π^{\pm}\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions turns out to be significant. This hadronic pollution should be taken into account when looking for new physics effects in decays into pions, which suggests to restrict these searches to squared lepton-pair invariant mass in the $(1,8)$ GeV$^2$ range. The interference of the one-photon exchange contribution with the dominant short-distance one-loop amplitude induces a sizable CP asymmetry in these rare decays, which calls for dedicated measurements.

The VV'P form factors in resonance chiral theory and the pi-eta-eta' light-by-light contribution to the muon g-2

The description of the VV'P form factors (V,V' stands for vector particles and P for a pseudoscalar meson) for different particles virtualities remains a challenge for the theory of strong interactions. While their chiral limit is well understood, recent measurements of the gamma^* omega pi^0 and gamma^* gamma pi^0 form factors at high photon virtualities seem to depart from the simplest scaling behavior suggested by QCD. Here we attempt to describe them in their whole measured energy regimes within the Resonance Chiral Theory, a framework which naturally incorporates the chiral limit constraints and extends to higher energies by including the resonances as active fields. Specifically, we obtained an accurate description of the data up to 2 GeV on the former form factor by including three multiplets of vector resonances. Good agreement with measurements of the latter was possible even in the single resonance approximation, although we propose to measure the e^+e^- to mu^+mu^-pi^0 cross-section and di-muon invariant mass distribution to better characterize this form factor. We have then evaluated the pion exchange contribution to the muon g-2 obtaining (6.66\pm0.21)x10^{-10} with an accurate determination of the errors. We have also recalled that approximating the whole pion exchange by the pion pole contribution underestimates the corresponding result for the anomaly (by (15,20)%). Based on these results, we have predicted the eta^(\prime) transition form factors obtaining good agreement with data and obtained their respective contributions to the muon anomaly. In this way, the contribution of the three lightest pseudoscalars to it yields (10.47\pm0.54)x10^{-10}, in agreement with previous evaluations but with smaller error.

One pion production in neutrino-nucleon scattering and the different parametrizations of the weak $N\rightarrowΔ$ vertex

The $N \to Δ$ weak vertex provides an important contribution to the one pion production in neutrino-nucleon and neutrino-nucleus scattering for $πN$ invariant masses below 1.4 GeV. Beyond its interest as a tool in neutrino detection and their background analyses, one pion production in neutrino-nucleon scattering is useful to test predictions based on the quark model and other internal symmetries of strong interactions. Here we try to establish a connection between two commonly used parametrizations of the weak $N \to Δ$ vertex and form factors (FF) and we study their effects on the determination of the axial coupling $C_5^A(0)$, the common normalization of the axial FF, which is predicted to hold 1.2 by using the PCAC hypothesis. Predictions for the $ν_μ p \to μ^- pπ^+$ total cross sections within the two approaches, which include the resonant $Δ^{++}$ and other background contributions in a coherent way, are compared to experimental data.

The weak radiative pion vertex in τ^- ->π^-ν_τl^+ l^- decays

We carry out a detailed study of the branching fractions and lepton pair invariant-mass spectrum of τ^- ->π^- ν_τl^+l^- decays (l=e,μ). In addition to the model-independent (QED) contributions, we include the structure-dependent (SD) terms, which encode information on the hadronization of QCD currents. The form factors describing the SD contributions are evaluated by supplementing Chiral Perturbation Theory with the inclusion of the lightest multiplet of spin-one resonances as active degrees of freedom. The Lagrangian couplings have been determined demanding the known QCD short-distance behaviour to the relevant Green functions and associated form factors in the limit where the number of colours goes to infinity. As a result, we predict BR(τ^- ->π^-ν_τe^+e^-)= (1.7^{+1.1}_{-0.3})x10^{-5} and BR(τ^- -> π^-ν_τμ^+μ^-) = [0.03,1.0]x10^{-5}. According to this, the first decay could be measured in the near future, which is not granted for the second one.

Violation of CP and T in semileptonic decays due to scalar interactions

Observing charge-parity (CP) or time-reversal (T) violations in the leptonic sector will give useful information to elucidate the nature of neutrinos. CP-violating couplings in charged leptonic currents carry out the weak phases necessary to break these symmetries. Here we study the interference of $W^{\pm}$ and $H^{\pm}$ bosons mediated amplitudes as the origin of possible CP and T violation in semileptonic decays of $K^{\pm}$ mesons and $τ^{\pm}$ leptons. We use the experimental bound on the T-odd transverse polarization asymmetry in $K^+_{μ3}$ decays to predict an upper limit on the CP violating effects in $τ\to K πν$ decays. In the framework of this model with scalar-mediated interactions, we find that current limits on the former process indicate that the CP violating effects in the latter are much smaller than the limits reported so far.

Determination of the Higgs boson mass by the cancellation of ultraviolet divergencies in the $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ Theory

We assume the vanishing of the quadratic divergences in the $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)$ electroweak theory. Using $\,$ the $\,$ top $\,$ mass $\,$ value reported recently by the CDF Collaboration $m_t = 176 \pm 8 \pm 10 GeV$, we predict the mass of the Higgs boson to be $m_H = 321 \pm 29 GeV$. If we assume the vanishing of both quadratic and logarithmic divergencies of the top self-mass, we predict $m_t = 170.5 \pm 0.3 GeV $ and $m_H = 308.6 \pm 0.7 GeV.$
