One-loop determination of $τ\to π(K) ν_τ[γ]$ branching ratios and new physics tests

We calculate the ratios $R_{τ/ P}\equiv Γ\left( τ\to P ν_τ[γ] \right) / Γ\left(P\to μν_μ[γ]\right)$ ($P=π,K$) at one loop following a large-$N_C$ expansion where Chiral Perturbation Theory is enlarged by including the lightest resonances and respecting the short-distance behavior dictated by QCD. We find $δR_{τ/π}=(0.18\pm 0.57 )\%$ and $δR_{τ/K}=(0.97\pm 0.58 )\%$, where the uncertainties are induced fundamentally by the counterterms. We test the lepton universality, obtaining $\left|g_τ/g_μ\right|_π=0.9964\pm 0.0038$ and $\left|g_τ/g_μ\right|_K=0.9857\pm 0.0078$, and analyze the CKM unitarity, getting results at $2.1σ$ and $1.5σ$ from unitarity via $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|$ and $|V_{us}|$, respectively. We also update the search for non-standard interactions in $τ$ decays. As a by-product, we report the theoretical radiative corrections to the $τ\to P ν_τ[γ]$ decay rates: $δ_{τπ} = -(0.24 \pm 0.56) \%$ and $δ_{τK} = -(0.15 \pm 0.57) \%$.} \maketitle

Contribution of neutral pseudoscalar mesons to $a_μ^{HLbL}$ within a Schwinger-Dyson equations approach to QCD

A continuum approach to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), based upon Schwinger-Dyson (SD) and Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equations, is employed to provide a tightly constrained prediction for the $γ^{*} γ^{*} \rightarrow \{ π^0, η, η', η_c, η_b \}$ transition form factors (TFFs) and their corresponding pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) piece of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon ($a_μ$). This work relies on a practical and well-tested quark-photon vertex Ansatz approach to evaluate the TFFs for arbitrary space-like photon virtualities, in the impulse approximation. The numerical results are parametrized meticulously, ensuring a reliable evaluation of the HLbL contributions to $a_μ$. We obtain: $a_μ^{π^0-\textrm{pole}} = (6.14 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-10}$, $a_μ^{η-\textrm{pole}} = (1.47 \pm 0.19) \times 10^{-10}$, $a_μ^{η'-\textrm{pole}} = (1.36 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-10}$, yielding a total value of $a_μ^{π^0+η+η'-\textrm{pole}} = (8.97 \pm 0.48) \times 10^{-10}$, compatible with contemporary determinations. Notably, we find that $a_μ^{η_c+η_b-\textrm{pole}} \approx a_μ^{η_c-\textrm{pole}} = (0.09 \pm 0.01) \times 10^{-10}$, which might not be negligible once the percent precision in the computation of the light pseudoscalars is reached.

Effects of heavy Majorana neutrinos on lepton flavor violating processes

The observation of lepton flavor violating processes at colliders could be a clear signal of a non-minimal neutrino sector. We define a 5-parameter model with a pair of TeV fermion singlets and arbitrary mixings with the three active neutrino flavors. Then we analyze several flavor violating transitions ($\ell\to \ell^{\prime}γ,\,\ell^{\prime}\ell^{\prime\prime}\bar{\ell}^{\prime\prime\prime}$ or $μ-e$ conversions in nuclei) and $Z\to\bar{\ell}\,\ell^{\prime}$ decays induced by the presence of heavy neutrinos. In particular, we calculate all the one-loop contributions to these processes and present their analytic expressions. We focus on the genuine effects of the heavy Majorana masses, comparing the results in that case with the ones obtained when the two heavy neutrinos define a Dirac field. Finally, we use our results to update the bounds on the heavy-light mixings in the neutrino sector.

Lepton-pair production in di-pion $τ$ lepton decays

We study the $τ^- \to ν_τ π^{-}π^{0}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ ($\ell=e,\,μ$) decays, which are $O(α^2)$-suppressed with respect to the dominant di-pion tau decay channel. Both the inner-bremsstrahlung and the structure- (and model-)dependent contributions are considered. In the $\ell=e$ case, structure-dependent effects are $\mathcal{O}(1\%)$ in the decay rate, yielding a clean prediction of its branching ratio, $2.3\times10^{-5}$, measurable with BaBar or Belle(-II) data. For $\ell=μ$, both contributions have similar magnitude and we get a branching fraction of $(1.6\pm0.3)\times10^{-7}$, reachable by the end of Belle-II operation. These decays allow to study the dynamics of strong interactions with simultaneous weak and electromagnetic probes; their knowledge will contribute to reducing backgrounds in lepton flavor/number violating searches.

New $τ$-based evaluation of the hadronic contribution to the vacuum polarization piece of the muon anomalous magnetic moment

We revisit the isospin-breaking and electromagnetic corrections to the decay $τ^-\toπ^-π^0ν_τ$, which allow its use as input in the two-pion contribution to the (leading order) hadronic vacuum polarization part of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We extend a previous resonance chiral Lagrangian analysis, which included those operators saturating the next-to-leading order chiral low energy constants, by including the contributions of the next subleading terms. As a result, we improve agreement between the two-pion tau decay and $e^+e^-$ data and reduce the discrepancy between experiment and the SM prediction of $a_μ$ (using $τ$ input).

Flavor violating leptonic decays of $τ$ and $μ$ leptons in the Standard Model with massive neutrinos

We have revisited the computations of the flavor violating leptonic decays of the $τ$ and $μ$ leptons into three lighter charged leptons in the Standard Model with non-vanishing neutrino masses. We were driven by a claimed unnaturally large branching ratio predicted for the $τ^-\to μ^- \ell^+ \ell^-$ ($\ell=μ, e$) decays \cite{Pham:1998fq}, which was at odds with the corresponding predictions for the $μ^-\to e^- e^-e^+$ processes \cite{Petcov:1976ff}. In contrast with the prediction in \cite{Pham:1998fq}, our results are strongly suppressed and in good agreement with the approximation done in ref.~\cite{Petcov:1976ff}, where masses and momenta of the external particles were neglected in order to deal with the loop integrals. However, as a result of keeping external momenta and masses in the computation of the dominant penguin and box diagrams- we even find slightly smaller branching fractions. Therefore, we confirm that any future observation of such processes would be an unambiguous manifestation of new physics beyond the Standard Model

Five-body leptonic decays of muon and tau leptons

We study the five-body decays $μ^- \to e^- e^+ e^- ν_μ \barν_{e}$ and $τ^- \to \ell^- \ell'^+\ell'^-ν_τ\barν_{\ell}$ for $\ell, \ell'=e, μ$ within the Standard Model (SM) and in a general effective field theory description of the weak interactions at low energies. We compute the branching ratios and compare our results with two previous, mutually discrepant, SM calculations. By assuming a general structure for the weak currents we derive the expressions for the energy and angular distributions of the three charged leptons when the decaying lepton is polarized, which will be useful in precise tests of the weak charged current at Belle II. In these decays, leptonic $\mathbf{T}$-odd correlations in triple products of spin and momenta --which may signal time reversal violation in the leptonic sector-- are suppressed by the tiny neutrino masses. Therefore, a measurement of such $\mathbf{T}$-violating observables would be associated to neutrinoless lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays, where this effect is not extremely suppressed. We also study the backgrounds that the SM five-lepton lepton decays constitute to searches of LFV $L^- \to \ell^- \ell'^+\ell'^-$ decays. Searches at high values of the invariant mass of the $\ell'^+\ell'^-$ pair look the most convenient way to overcome the background.

Lepton flavor violation in the Simplest Little Higgs model

Little Higgs Models are a possible elegant solution to the hierarchy problem on the Higgs mass. As they predict naturally small deviations with respect to SM results, they are in agreement with all current experimental data. In this contribution, we review lepton flavor violation in the Simplest Little Higgs model focusing on semileptonic lepton flavor violating tau decays (where some new results are presented) and $H\to\ell\ell'$. Within this model, the most promising decay channels for discovering lepton flavor violation are $μ\to e$ conversion in nuclei, $μ\to eγ^{(*)}$, $τ\to (e/μ)γ$ and $τ\to (e/μ) (π^+π^-/ρ)$.

Lepton Flavour Violation in Hadron Decays of the Tau Lepton in the Simplest Little Higgs Model

We study Lepton Flavour Violating hadron decays of the tau lepton within the Simplest Little Higgs model. Namely we consider $τ\rightarrow μ(P, V, PP)$ where $P$ and $V$ are short for a pseudoscalar and a vector meson. We find that, in the most positive scenarios, branching ratios for these processes are predicted to be, at least, four orders of magnitude smaller than present experimental bounds.

$L\,\to\, l\, l'\, l'\, ν_l\, ν_L$ in the SM and beyond

We study the $L\to l l' l' ν_l ν_L$ decays ($L=τ,μ$; $l,l'=μ,e$) in the Standard Model (SM) and in the effective field theory (EFT) description of the weak charged current at low energy, both for polarized and unpolarized $L$, keeping the $l,l'$ mass dependence. We clarify the discrepancy between two previous SM calculations of the decay rate improving their precision. The recent $3.5\,σ$ anomaly found in $τ\to e γ\barν_eν_τ$ could be checked using our precise prediction for the $τ\to e e e \barν_eν_τ$ decays, which shall be measured analyzing already existing data from the first generation B-factories. It is shown how measurements of the di-$l'$ mass distribution (with appropriate cuts) and $T$-asymmetries are able to reveal the corresponding lepton flavor violating (LFV) processes without neutrinos in the final state.

A new long distance contribution to $B^\pm\to K^\pm/π^\pm\ell^+\ell-$ decays

We have identified a missing long-distance (one-photon exchange) contribution to the $B^\pm\to K^\pm/π^\pm\ell^+\ell^-$ decays. Although it does not help to explain the anomaly measured by the LHCb Coll. in the ratio $R_K = \mathcal{B}(B^\pm\to K^\pmμ^+μ^-)/\mathcal{B}(B^\pm\to K^\pm e^+e^-)\sim0.75$ (2.6 $σ$ deviation with respect to $R_K=1+\mathcal{O}(10^{-4})$ in the Standard Model), it provides a sizable contribution to the branching ratio of the $B^\pm\to π^\pm\ell^+\ell^-$ decays. The new decay mechanism gives rise to a measurable CP asymmetry, which is of order 1\% in both channels. These predictions can be tested in forthcoming LHCb measurements.

preprint2015arXiv

Long-distance weak annihilation contribution to the $B^{\pm}\to (π^{\pm},K^{\pm}) \ell^+\ell^-$ decays

We propose an alternative evaluation of the long-distance weak annihilation (WA, also called one-photon exchange in this paper) contribution to the rare semileptonic $B^{\pm}\to (π^{\pm},K^{\pm})\ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell=e,\,μ$) decays. This hadronic description at low energies is matched at intermediate energies to its short-distance counterpart in terms of quark and gluon degrees of freedom. Although the WA contribution does not contribute to solve the possible breaking of lepton-universality observed by LHCb in the $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}(μ^+μ^-/e^+e^-)$ ratio, nor provides an important hadronic contamination to their decay rates, its contribution to the branching ratios (and direct CP asymmetry) of the $B^{\pm}\to π^{\pm}\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions turns out to be significant. This hadronic pollution should be taken into account when looking for new physics effects in decays into pions, which suggests to restrict these searches to squared lepton-pair invariant mass in the $(1,8)$ GeV$^2$ range. The interference of the one-photon exchange contribution with the dominant short-distance one-loop amplitude induces a sizable CP asymmetry in these rare decays, which calls for dedicated measurements.

Assessing the accuracy of the Brodsky-Lepage prediction

We show that a consistent set of short-distance conditions on the odd-intrinsic parity resonance chiral Lagrangian couplings can be derived in the large-$N_C$ limit and the single resonance approximation. These constraints are satisfied both by the VVP Green function and all its associated form-factors. Moreover, they are in agreement with earlier results found in the normal parity sector, which further supports the overall consistency of the approach. Here we take a new perspective and examine the consequences of these high-energy relations on the precise coefficient of the $1/Q^2$-term of meson form-factors, which rules their asymptotic behavior. In particular, we show that the coefficient derived using our consistent set of short-distance constraints is in remarkable accordance with the Brodsky-Lepage prediction, being alternative results for these coefficients disfavored.

Combined analysis of the decays $τ^-\to K_Sπ^-ν_τ$ and $τ^-\to K^-ην_τ$

In a combined study of the decay spectra of $τ^-\to K_Sπ^-ν_τ$ and $τ^-\to K^-ην_τ$ decays within a dispersive representation of the required form factors, we illustrate how the $K^*(1410)$ resonance parameters, defined through the pole position in the complex plane, can be extracted with improved precision as compared to previous studies. While we obtain a substantial improvement in the mass, the uncertainty in the width is only slightly reduced, with the findings $M_{K^{*\prime}}=1304 \pm 17\,$MeV and $Γ_{K^{*\prime}} = 171 \pm 62\,$MeV. Further constraints on the width could result from updated analyses of the $Kπ$ and/or $Kη$ spectra using the full Belle-I data sample. Prospects for Belle-II are also discussed. As the $K^-π^0$ vector form factor enters the description of the decay $τ^-\to K^-ην_τ$, we are in a position to investigate isospin violations in its parameters like the form factor slopes. In this respect also making available the spectrum of the transition $τ^-\to K^-π^0ν_τ$ would be extremely useful, as it would allow to study those isospin violations with much higher precision.

The VV'P form factors in resonance chiral theory and the pi-eta-eta' light-by-light contribution to the muon g-2

The description of the VV'P form factors (V,V' stands for vector particles and P for a pseudoscalar meson) for different particles virtualities remains a challenge for the theory of strong interactions. While their chiral limit is well understood, recent measurements of the gamma^* omega pi^0 and gamma^* gamma pi^0 form factors at high photon virtualities seem to depart from the simplest scaling behavior suggested by QCD. Here we attempt to describe them in their whole measured energy regimes within the Resonance Chiral Theory, a framework which naturally incorporates the chiral limit constraints and extends to higher energies by including the resonances as active fields. Specifically, we obtained an accurate description of the data up to 2 GeV on the former form factor by including three multiplets of vector resonances. Good agreement with measurements of the latter was possible even in the single resonance approximation, although we propose to measure the e^+e^- to mu^+mu^-pi^0 cross-section and di-muon invariant mass distribution to better characterize this form factor. We have then evaluated the pion exchange contribution to the muon g-2 obtaining (6.66\pm0.21)x10^{-10} with an accurate determination of the errors. We have also recalled that approximating the whole pion exchange by the pion pole contribution underestimates the corresponding result for the anomaly (by (15,20)%). Based on these results, we have predicted the eta^(\prime) transition form factors obtaining good agreement with data and obtained their respective contributions to the muon anomaly. In this way, the contribution of the three lightest pseudoscalars to it yields (10.47\pm0.54)x10^{-10}, in agreement with previous evaluations but with smaller error.

$τ^-\to K^-η^{(\prime)}ν_τ$ decays in Chiral Perturbation Theory with Resonances

We have studied the $τ^-\to K^-η^{(\prime)}ν_τ$ decays within Chiral Perturbation Theory including resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We have considered three different form factors according to treatment of final-state interactions. In increasing degree of soundness: Breit-Wigner, exponential resummation and dispersive representation. We find that although the first one fails in accounting for the data on the $Kη$ mode, the other two approaches provide good fits to them which are sensitive to the $K^\star(1410)$ pole parameters, that are determined to be $M_{K^{\star\prime}}\,=\,(1330^{+27}_{-41})$ MeV and $Γ_{K^{\star\prime}}\,=\,(217^{+68}_{-122})$ MeV. These values are competitive with the standard determination from $τ^-\to(Kπ)^-ν_τ$ decays. The corresponding predictions for the $τ^-\to K^-η^{\prime}ν_τ$ channel respect the current upper bound and hint to the discovery of this decay mode in the near future.

$τ^-\toπ^-η^{(\prime)}ν_τ$ decays

The vector and scalar form factors relevant to the second-class current $τ^-\toπ^-η^{(\prime)}ν_τ$ processes are evaluated supplementing Chiral Perturbation Theory with the inclusion of resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. While the vector contribution is essentially fixed from knowledge of the two-pion vector form factor, the scalar form factor demands a coupled channel dispersive analysis to obtain robust predictions for the detection of these decay modes.

Constraining the Hadronic Contributions to the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment

The mini-proceedings of the Workshop on "Constraining the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment" which included the "13th meeting of the Radio MonteCarLow WG" and the "Satellite meeting R-Measurements at BES-III" held in Trento from April 10th to 12th, 2013, are presented. This collaboration meeting aims to bring together the experimental e+e- collider communities from BaBar, Belle, BESIII, CMD2, KLOE, and SND, with theorists working in the fields of meson transitions form factors, hadronic contributions to (g-2)_μand effective fine structure constant, and development of Monte Carlo generator and Radiative Corrections for precision e+e- and tau physics.

Dispersive representation of the pion vector form factor in $τ\toππν_τ$ decays

We propose a dispersive representation of the charged pion vector form factor that is consistent with chiral symmetry and fulfills the constraints imposed by analyticity and unitarity. Unknown parameters are fitted to the very precise data on $τ^-\toπ^-π^0ν_τ$ decays obtained by Belle, leading to a good description of the corresponding spectral function up to a $ππ$ squared invariant mass $s\simeq 1.5$ GeV$^2$. We discuss the effect of isospin corrections, and obtain the values of low energy observables. For larger values of $s$, this representation is complemented with a phenomenological description to allow its implementation in the new TAUOLA hadronic currents.

Resonance Chiral Lagrangian Currents and Experimental Data for $τ^-\toπ^{-}π^{-}π^{+}ν_τ$

In this paper we document the modifications introduced to the previous version of the Resonance Chiral Lagrangian current ({\it Phys.Rev.} {\bf D86} (2012) 113008) of the $τ^\pm \to π^\pm π^\pm π^\mp ν_τ$ decay which enable the one dimensional distributions measured by the BaBar collaboration to be well modeled. The main change required to model the data is the addition of the $σ$ resonance. Systematic errors, theoretical and experimental ones, limitations due to fits of one dimensional distributions only, and resulting difficulties and statistical/systematic errors for fitted parameters are addressed. The current and fitting environment is ready for comparisons with the fully exclusive experimental data. The present result for $τ^\pm \to π^\pm π^\pm π^\mp ν_τ$ is encouraging for work on other $τ$ decay modes and Resonance Chiral Lagrangian based currents.

Resonance chiral Lagrangian currents and tau decay Monte Carlo

Measurements of tau lepton, because of its long lifetime, large mass and parity sensitive couplings lead to broad physics interest. From the perspective of high-energy experiments such as at LHC, knowledge of tau lepton properties offers an important ingredient of new physics signatures. From the perspective of lower energies, tau lepton decays constitute an excellent laboratory for hadronic interactions. At present, hundreds of millions of tau decays have been amassed by both Belle and BaBar experiments. It is of utmost importance to represent such data in a form as useful for general applications as possible. In the present paper we describe the set of form factors for hadronic tau decays based on Resonance Chiral Theory. The technical implementation of the form factors in FORTRAN code is also explained. It is shown how it can be installed into TAUOLA Monte Carlo program. Then it is rather easy to implement into software environments of not only Belle and BaBar collaborations but also for FORTRAN and C++ applications of LHC. Description of the current for each tau decay mode is complemented with technical numerical tests. The set is ready for fits, parameters to be used in fits are explained. Arrangements to work with the experimental data not requiring unfolding are prepared. Hadronic currents, ready for confrontation with the tau decay data, but not yet ready for the general use, cover more than 88% of hadronic tau decay width.

The weak radiative pion vertex in τ^- ->π^-ν_τl^+ l^- decays

We carry out a detailed study of the branching fractions and lepton pair invariant-mass spectrum of τ^- ->π^- ν_τl^+l^- decays (l=e,μ). In addition to the model-independent (QED) contributions, we include the structure-dependent (SD) terms, which encode information on the hadronization of QCD currents. The form factors describing the SD contributions are evaluated by supplementing Chiral Perturbation Theory with the inclusion of the lightest multiplet of spin-one resonances as active degrees of freedom. The Lagrangian couplings have been determined demanding the known QCD short-distance behaviour to the relevant Green functions and associated form factors in the limit where the number of colours goes to infinity. As a result, we predict BR(τ^- ->π^-ν_τe^+e^-)= (1.7^{+1.1}_{-0.3})x10^{-5} and BR(τ^- -> π^-ν_τμ^+μ^-) = [0.03,1.0]x10^{-5}. According to this, the first decay could be measured in the near future, which is not granted for the second one.

We present a partial upgrade of the Monte Carlo event generator TAUOLA with the two and three hadron decay modes using the theoretical models based on Resonance Chiral Theory. Theoretical inputs and errors in the new hadronic currents in TAUOLA

The new hadronic currents implemented in the TAUOLA library are obtained in the unified and consistent framework of Resonance Chiral Theory: a Lagrangian approach in which the resonances exchanged in the hadronic tau decays are active degrees of freedom included in a way that reproduces the low-energy results of Chiral Perturbation Theory. The short-distance QCD constraints on the imaginary part of the spin-one correlators yield relations among the couplings that render the theory predictive. In this communication, the obtaining of the two- and three-meson form factors is sketched. One of the criticisms to our framework is that the error may be as large as 1/3, since it is a realization of the large-N_C limit of QCD in a meson theory. A number of arguments are given which disfavor that claim pointing to smaller errors, which would explain the phenomenological success of our description in these decays. Finally, other minor sources of error and current improvements of the code are discussed.

Hadron structure in tau -> KKpi nu_tau decays

We analyse the hadronization structure of both vector and axial-vector currents leading to tau -> KKpi nu_tau decays. At leading order in the 1/Nc expansion, and considering only the contribution of the lightest resonances, we work out, within the framework of the resonance chiral Lagrangian, the structure of the local vertices involved in those processes. The couplings in the resonance theory are constrained by imposing the asymptotic behaviour of vector and axial-vector spectral functions ruled by QCD. In this way we predict the hadron spectra and conclude that, contrarily to previous assertions, the vector contribution dominates by far over the axial-vector one in all KKpi charge channels.

tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau decays and the a_1(1260) off-shell width revisited

The tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau decay is driven by the hadronization of the axial-vector current. Within the resonance chiral theory, and considering the large-Nc expansion, this process has been studied in Ref.[1]. In the light of later developments we revise here this previous work by including a new off-shell width for the lightest a_1 resonance that provides a good description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau spectrum and branching ratio. We also consider the role of the rho(1450) resonance in these observables. Thus we bring in an overall description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau process in excellent agreement with our present experimental knowledge.

Quest for precision in hadronic cross sections at low energy: Monte Carlo tools vs. experimental data

We present the achievements of the last years of the experimental and theoretical groups working on hadronic cross section measurements at the low energy e+e- colliders in Beijing, Frascati, Ithaca, Novosibirsk, Stanford and Tsukuba and on tau decays. We sketch the prospects in these fields for the years to come. We emphasise the status and the precision of the Monte Carlo generators used to analyse the hadronic cross section measurements obtained as well with energy scans as with radiative return, to determine luminosities and tau decays. The radiative corrections fully or approximately implemented in the various codes and the contribution of the vacuum polarisation are discussed.
