Hierarchical Multi-resource Fair Queueing for Packet Processing

Various middleboxes are ubiquitously deployed in networks to perform packet processing functions, such as firewalling, proxy, scheduling, etc., for the flows passing through them. With the explosion of network traffic and the demand for multiple types of network resources, it has never been more challenging for a middlebox to provide Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees to grouped flows. Unfortunately, all currently existing fair queueing algorithms fail in supporting hierarchical scheduling, which is necessary to provide QoS guarantee to the grouped flows of multiple service classes. In this paper, we present two new multi-resource fair queueing algorithms to support hierarchical scheduling, collapsed Hierarchical Dominant Resource Fair Queueing (collapsed H-DRFQ) and dove-tailing H-DRFQ. Particularly, collapsed H-DRFQ transforms the hierarchy of grouped flows into a flat structure for flat scheduling while dove-tailing H-DRFQ iteratively performs flat scheduling to sibling nodes on the original hierarchy. Through rigorous theoretical analysis, we find that both algorithms can provide hierarchical share guarantees to individual flows, while the upper bound of packet delay in dove-tailing H-DRFQ is smaller than that of collapsed H-DRFQ. We implement the proposed algorithms on Click modular router and the experimental results verify our analytical results.

Corrugated structure insertion for extending the SASE bandwidth up to 3% at the European XFEL

The usage of x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) in femtosecond nanocrystallography involves sequential illumination of many small crystals of arbitrary orientation. Hence a wide radiation bandwidth will be useful in order to obtain and to index a larger number of Bragg peaks used for determination of the crystal orientation. Considering the baseline configuration of the European XFEL in Hamburg, and based on beam dynamics simulations, we demonstrate here that the usage of corrugated structures allows for a considerable increase in radiation bandwidth. Data collection with a 3% bandwidth, a few microjoule radiation pulse energy, a few femtosecond pulse duration, and a photon energy of 5.4 keV is possible. For this study we have developed an analytical modal representation of the short-range wake function of the flat corrugated structures for arbitrary offsets of the source and the witness particles.

Enhanced Raman sideband cooling of caesium atoms in a vapour-loaded magneto-optical trap

We report enhanced three-dimensional degenerated Raman sideband cooling (3D DRSC) of caesium (Cs) atoms in a standard single-cell vapour-loading magneto-optical trap. Our improved scheme involves using a separate repumping laser and optimized lattice detuning. We load $1.5 \times 10^7$ atoms into the Raman lattice with a detuning of -15.5 GHz (to the ground F = 3 state). Enhanced 3D DRSC is used to cool them from 60 $μ$K to 1.7 $μ$K within 12 ms and the number of obtained atoms is about $1.2 \times 10^7$. A theoretical model is proposed to simulate the measured number of trapped atoms. The result shows good agreement with the experimental data. The technique paves the way for loading a large number of ultracold Cs atoms into a crossed dipole trap and efficient evaporative cooling in a single-cell system.

Start-to-end simulation of the injector for a compact THz source

Terahertz radiation has broad application prospect due to its ability to penetrate deep into many organic materials without damage caused by ionizing radiations. A FEL-based THz source is the best choice to produce high-power radiation. In this paper, a 14 MeV injector is introduced for generating high-quality beam for FEL, which is composed of an EC-ITC RF gun, compensating coils and a travelling-wave structure. Start-to-end simulation has been done with ASTRA code to verify the design and to optimize parameters. Simulation of operating mode at 6 MeV is also executed.

An isoperimetric inequality for eigenvalues of the bi-harmonic operator

} In this article, we put forward a Neumann eigenvalue problem for the bi-harmonic operator $Δ^2$ on a bounded smooth domain $\Om$ in the Euclidean $n$-space ${\bf R}^n$ ($n\ge2$) and then prove that the corresponding first non-zero eigenvalue $Υ_1(\Om)$ admits the isoperimetric inequality of Szegö-Weinberger type: $Υ_1(\Om)\le Υ_1(B_{\Om})$, where $B_{\Om}$ is a ball in ${\bf R}^n$ with the same volume of $\Om$. The isoperimetric inequality of Szegö-Weinberger type for the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue of the even-multi-Laplacian operators $Δ^{2m}$ ($m\ge1$) on $\Om$ is also exploited.
