Optimizing fog harvesting by biomimicry

Inspired by the stenocara beetle, we study an ideal flat surface composed of a regular array of hydrophilic circular patches in a hydrophobic matrix on an incline of tilt $α$ with respect to the horizontal. Based on an exact solution of the Laplace-Young equation at first order in the Bond number, the liquid storage capacity of the surface is maximized as function of the patch radius, for suitable ranges of hydrophilic and hydrophobic contact angles, for tilt angles such as $45^{\circ}$ or $90^\circ$. It is found that the optimal radius equally prevents dewetting from the top of the patches and overflow at the bottom. These theoretical considerations are validated by several experiments for the glass/octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) system involving different patch sizes and different inclinations. In a simple dynamical model, taking into account the flux of fog onto the surface or condensation on a suitably cooled surface, we find that the conditions for maximum harvest agree with the ones of maximum static storage. The method could be developed for drop storage and drop transport applications such as water-harvesting systems.

Hard x-ray standing-wave photoemission insights into the structure of an epitaxial Fe/MgO multilayer magnetic tunnel junction

The Fe/MgO magnetic tunnel junction is a classic spintronic system, with current importance technologically, and interest for future innovation. The key magnetic properties are linked directly to the structure of hard-to-access buried interfaces, and the Fe and MgO components near the surface are unstable when exposed to air, making a deeper probing, non-destructive, in-situ measurement ideal for this system. We have thus applied hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HXPS) and standing-wave (SW) HXPS in the few keV energy range to probe the structure of an epitaxially-grown MgO/Fe superlattice. The superlattice consists of 9 repeats of MgO grown on Fe by magnetron sputtering on an MgO (001) substrate, with a protective Al2O3 capping layer. We determine through SW-HXPS that 8 of the 9 repeats are similar and ordered, with a period of 33 $\pm$ 4 angstrom, with minor presence of FeO at the interfaces and a significantly distorted top bilayer with ca. 3 times the oxidation of the lower layers at the top MgO/Fe interface. There is evidence of asymmetrical oxidation on the top and bottom of the Fe layers. We find agreement with dark-field scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and x-ray reflectivity measurements. Through the STEM measurements we confirm an overall epitaxial stack with dislocations and warping at the interfaces of ca. 5 angstrom. We also note a distinct difference in the top bilayer, especially MgO, with possible Fe inclusions. We thus demonstrate that SW-HXPS can be used to probe deep buried interfaces of novel magnetic devices with few angstrom precision.

Depth-Resolved Composition and Electronic Structure of Buried Layers and Interfaces in a LaNiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ Superlattice from Soft- and Hard- X-ray Standing-Wave Angle-Resolved Photoemission

LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) is an intriguing member of the rare-earth nickelates in exhibiting a metal-insulator transition for a critical film thickness of about 4 unit cells [Son et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 96, 062114 (2010)]; however, such thin films also show a transition to a metallic state in superlattices with SrTiO$_3$ (STO) [Son et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 97, 202109 (2010)]. In order to better understand this transition, we have studied a strained LNO/STO superlattice with 10 repeats of [4 unit-cell LNO/3 unit-cell STO] grown on an (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$AlTaO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ substrate using soft x-ray standing-wave-excited angle-resolved photoemission (SWARPES), together with soft- and hard- x-ray photoemission measurements of core levels and densities-of-states valence spectra. The experimental results are compared with state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) calculations of band structures and densities of states. Using core-level rocking curves and x-ray optical modeling to assess the position of the standing wave, SWARPES measurements are carried out for various incidence angles and used to determine interface-specific changes in momentum-resolved electronic structure. We further show that the momentum-resolved behavior of the Ni 3d eg and t2g states near the Fermi level, as well as those at the bottom of the valence bands, is very similar to recently published SWARPES results for a related La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice that was studied using the same technique (Gray et al., Europhysics Letters 104, 17004 (2013)), which further validates this experimental approach and our conclusions. Our conclusions are also supported in several ways by comparison to DFT calculations for the parent materials and the superlattice, including layer-resolved density-of-states results.

Energetic, spatial and momentum character of a buried interface: the two-dimensional electron gas between two metal oxides

The interfaces between two condensed phases often exhibit emergent physical properties that can lead to new physics and novel device applications, and are the subject of intense study in many disciplines. We here apply novel experimental and theoretical techniques to the characterization of one such interesting interface system: the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed in multilayers consisting of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and GdTiO$_3$ (GTO). This system has been the subject of multiple studies recently and shown to exhibit very high carrier charge densities and ferromagnetic effects, among other intriguing properties. We have studied a 2DEG-forming multilayer of the form [6 unit cells STO/3 unit cells of GTO]$_{20}$ using a unique array of photoemission techniques including soft and hard x-ray excitation, soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission, core-level spectroscopy, resonant excitation, and standing-wave effects, as well as theoretical calculations of the electronic structure at several levels and of the actual photoemission process. Standing-wave measurements below and above a strong resonance have been introduced as a powerful method for studying the 2DEG depth distribution. We have thus characterized the spatial and momentum properties of this 2DEG with unprecedented detail, determining via depth-distribution measurements that it is spread throughout the 6 u.c. layer of STO, and measuring the momentum dispersion of its states. The experimental results are supported in several ways by theory, leading to a much more complete picture of the nature of this 2DEG, and suggesting that oxygen vacancies are not the origin of it. Similar multi-technique photoemission studies of such states at buried interfaces, combined with comparable theory, will be a very fruitful future approach for exploring and modifying the fascinating world of buried-interface physics and chemistry.

Superconductor to Mott insulator transition in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$/LaCaMnO$_3$ heterostructures

The superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT) induced by means such as external magnetic fields, disorder or spatial confinement is a vivid illustration of a quantum phase transition dramatically affecting the superconducting order parameter. In pursuit of a new realization of the SIT by interfacial charge transfer, we developed extremely thin superlattices composed of high $T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and colossal magnetoresistance ferromagnet La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO). By using linearly polarized resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism, combined with hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we derived a complete picture of the interfacial carrier doping in cuprate and manganite atomic layers, leading to the transition from superconducting to an unusual Mott insulating state emerging with the increase of LCMO layer thickness. In addition, contrary to the common perception that only transition metal ions may response to the charge transfer process, we found that charge is also actively compensated by rare-earth and alkaline-earth metal ions of the interface. Such deterministic control of $T_c$ by pure electronic doping without any hindering effects of chemical substitution is another promising route to disentangle the role of disorder on the pseudo-gap and charge density wave phases of underdoped cuprates.

A facility to Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) at the CERN SPS

A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden particles are predicted by a large number of models beyond the Standard Model. The high intensity of the SPS 400~GeV beam allows probing a wide variety of models containing light long-lived exotic particles with masses below ${\cal O}$(10)~GeV/c$^2$, including very weakly interacting low-energy SUSY states. The experimental programme of the proposed facility is capable of being extended in the future, e.g. to include direct searches for Dark Matter and Lepton Flavour Violation.

Application of vertex and mass constraints in track-based alignment

The software alignment of planar tracking detectors using samples of charged particle trajectories may lead to global detector distortions that affect vertex and momentum resolution. We present an alignment procedure that constrains such distortions by making use of samples of decay vertices reconstructed from two or more trajectories and putting constraints on their invariant mass. We illustrate the method by using a sample of invariant-mass constrained vertices from D^0 --> K^- pi^+ decays to remove a curvature bias in the LHCb spectrometer.

Momentum-resolved electronic structure at a buried interface from soft x-ray standing-wave angle-resolved photoemission

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful technique for the study of electronic structure, but it lacks a direct ability to study buried interfaces between two materials. We address this limitation by combining ARPES with soft x-ray standing-wave (SW) excitation (SWARPES), in which the SW profile is scanned through the depth of the sample. We have studied the buried interface in a prototypical magnetic tunnel junction La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3. Depth- and momentum-resolved maps of Mn 3d eg and t2g states from the central, bulk-like and interface-like regions of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 exhibit distinctly different behavior consistent with a change in the Mn bonding at the interface. We compare the experimental results to state-of-the-art density-functional and one-step photoemission theory, with encouraging agreement that suggests wide future applications of this technique.

Absolute luminosity measurements with the LHCb detector at the LHC

Absolute luminosity measurements are of general interest for colliding-beam experiments at storage rings. These measurements are necessary to determine the absolute cross-sections of reaction processes and are valuable to quantify the performance of the accelerator. Using data taken in 2010, LHCb has applied two methods to determine the absolute scale of its luminosity measurements for proton-proton collisions at the LHC with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. In addition to the classic "van der Meer scan" method a novel technique has been developed which makes use of direct imaging of the individual beams using beam-gas and beam-beam interactions. This beam imaging method is made possible by the high resolution of the LHCb vertex detector and the close proximity of the detector to the beams, and allows beam parameters such as positions, angles and widths to be determined. The results of the two methods have comparable precision and are in good agreement. Combining the two methods, an overall precision of 3.5% in the absolute luminosity determination is reached. The techniques used to transport the absolute luminosity calibration to the full 2010 data-taking period are presented.

First observation of the decay $B^0_s \rightarrow K^{*0} \bar{K]^{*0}$

The first observation of the decay $\kstarkstar$ is reported using 35\invpb of data collected by LHCb in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A total of $49.8 \pm 7.5$ $B^0_s \rightarrow (K^+π^-)(K^-π^+)$ events are {observed within $\pm 50 \mevcc$ of the \Bs mass and $746 \mevcc < m_{Kπ}< 1046 \mevcc$, mostly coming from a resonant $\kstarkstar$ signal.} The branching fraction and the \CP-averaged \Kstarz longitudinal polarization fraction are measured to be {$\BR(\kstarkstar) = (2.81 \pm 0.46 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.45 ({\rm syst.}) \pm 0.34\, (f_s/f_d))\times10^{-5}$} and $f_L = 0.31 \pm 0.12 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.04 ({\rm syst.})$.

Measurement of b hadron production fractions in 7 TeV pp collisions

Measurements of $b$ hadron production ratios in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3 pb$^{-1}$ are presented. We study the ratios of strange $B$ meson to light $B$ meson production $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ and $Λ_b^0$ baryon to light $B$ meson production $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)$ as a function of the charmed hadron-muon pair transverse momentum $p_T$ and the $b$ hadron pseudorapidity $η$, for $p_T$ between 0 and 14 GeV and $η$ between 2 and 5. We find that $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ is consistent with being independent of $p_{\rm T}$ and $η$, and we determine $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ = 0.134$\pm$ 0.004 $^{+0.011}_{-0.010}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The corresponding ratio $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)$ is found to be dependent upon the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron-muon pair, $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)=(0.404\pm 0.017 (stat) \pm 0.027 (syst) \pm 0.105 (Br))\times[1 -(0.031 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst))\times p_T(GeV)]$, where Br reflects an absolute scale uncertainty due to the poorly known branching fraction Br(Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+)$. We extract the ratio of strange $B$ meson to light neutral $B$ meson production $f_s/f_d$ by averaging the result reported here with two previous measurements derived from the relative abundances of $\bar{B}_s \to D_S^+ π^-$ to $\bar{B}^0 \to D^+K^-$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^+π^-$. We obtain $f_s/f_d=0.267^{+0.021}_{-0.020}$.

Measurement of the cross-section ratio $σ(χ_{c2})/σ(χ_{c1})$ for prompt $χ_c$ production at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

The prompt production of the charmonium $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons has been studied in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The $χ_c$ mesons are identified through their decays $χ_c\to J/ψ\,γ$ with $J/ψ\to μ^+ μ^-$ using 36 $\mathrm{pb^{-1}}$ of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for the two $χ_c$ spin states, $σ(χ_{c2})/σ(χ_{c1})$, has been determined as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/ψ}$, in the range from 2 to 15 GeV/$c$. The results are in agreement with the next-to-leading order non-relativistic QCD model at high $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/ψ}$ and lie consistently above the pure leading-order colour singlet prediction.

Determination of f_s/f_d for 7 TeV pp collisions and a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay Bd->D-K+

The relative abundance of the three decay modes $B_d \to D^- K^+$, $B_d \to D^- π^+$ and $B_s \to D_s^- π^+$ produced in 7 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC is determined from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb$^{-1}$. The ratio of fragmentation fractions \fsfdt is determined through the relative abundance of $B_s \to D_s^- π^+$ to $B_d \to D^- K^+$ and $B_d \to D^-π^+$, leading to $f_s/f_d = 0.253 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.020$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and theoretical respectively.

First observation of Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu decays

Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the semileptonic decays Bs -> Ds+ X mu nu and Bs -> D0 K+ X mu nu are detected. Two structures are observed in the D0 K+ mass spectrum at masses consistent with the known D^+_{s1}(2536) and $D^{*+}_{s2}(2573) mesons. The measured branching fractions relative to the total Bs semileptonic rate are B(Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (3.3\pm 1.0\pm 0.4)%, and B(Bs -> D_{s1}^+ X munu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (5.4\pm 1.2\pm 0.5)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of the D_{s2}^{*+} state in Bs decays; we also measure its mass and width.

The first observation of the decay $\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0}$ using $pp$ data collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb$^{-1}$, is reported. Measurement of $V^0$ production ratios in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ and 7\,TeV

The $\barΛ / Λ$ and $\barΛ / K^0_\mathrm{S}$ production ratios are measured by the LHCb detector from $0.3\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$\,TeV and $1.8\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$\,TeV. Both ratios are presented as a function of transverse momentum, $p_\mathrm{T}$, and rapidity, $y$, in the ranges {$0.15 < p_\mathrm{T} < 2.50\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$} and {$2.0<y<4.5$}. Results at the two energies are in good agreement as a function of rapidity loss, $Δy = y_\mathrm{beam} - y$, and are consistent with previous measurements. The ratio $\barΛ / Λ$, measuring the transport of baryon number from the collision into the detector, is smaller in data than predicted in simulation, particularly at high rapidity. The ratio $\barΛ / K^0_\mathrm{S}$, measuring the baryon-to-meson suppression in strange quark hadronisation, is significantly larger than expected.

Measurement of charged particle multiplicities in $pp$ collisions at ${\sqrt{s} =7}$TeV in the forward region

The charged particle production in proton-proton collisions is studied with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of ${\sqrt{s} =7}$TeV in different intervals of pseudorapidity $η$. The charged particles are reconstructed close to the interaction region in the vertex detector, which provides high reconstruction efficiency in the $η$ ranges $-2.5<η<-2.0$ and $2.0<η<4.5$. The data were taken with a minimum bias trigger, only requiring one or more reconstructed tracks in the vertex detector. By selecting an event sample with at least one track with a transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c a hard QCD subsample is investigated. Several event generators are compared with the data; none are able to describe fully the multiplicity distributions or the charged particle density distribution as a function of $η$. In general, the models underestimate the charged particle production.

Measurement of J/psi production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

The production of J/psi mesons in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section for prompt J/psi production is measured as a function of the J/psi transverse momentum pT and rapidity y in the fiducial region 0<pT<14 GeV/c and 2.0<y<4.5. The differential cross-section and fraction of J/psi from b-hadron decays are also measured in the same pT and y ranges. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2pb-1. The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are 10.52 +/- 0.04 +/- 1.40 +1.64/-2.20 mub for prompt J/psi production and 1.14 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.16 mub for J/psi from b-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The prompt J/psi production cross-section is obtained assuming no J/psi polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.

Measurement of the inclusive phi cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

The cross-section for inclusive phi meson production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV has been measured with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The differential cross-section is measured as a function of the phi transverse momentum p_T and rapidity y in the region 0.6 < p_T < 5.0 GeV/c and 2.44 < y < 4.06. The cross-section for inclusive phi production in this kinematic range is sigma(pp -> phi X) = 1758 pm 19(stat) ^{+43}_{-14}(syst) pm 182(scale) microbarn, where the first systematic uncertainty depends on the p_T and y region and the second is related to the overall scale. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0. The data are found to be in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and generator expectations.
