Ultrahigh-Energy Gamma-ray Emission Associated with Black Hole-Jet Systems

Black holes (BH), one of the most intriguing objects in the universe, can manifest themselves through electromagnetic radiation initiated by the accretion flow. Some stellar-mass BHs drive relativistic jets when accreting matter from their companion stars, forming microquasars. Non-thermal emission from the radio to tera-electronvolt (TeV) gamma-ray band has been observed from microquasars, indicating the acceleration of relativistic particles. Here we report detection of four microquasars (SS 433, V4641 Sgr, GRS 1915+105, MAXI J1820+070) of spectrum extending to the ultrahigh-energy (UHE; photon energy $E>100$ TeV) band and one microquasar (Cygnus X-1) of spectrum approaching 100 TeV, using the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Notably, the total emission associated with SS 433 cannot be interpreted with a single leptonic component. In the UHE band, its emission is in spatial coincidence with a giant atomic cloud, which is consistent with a hadronic origin. An elongated source is discovered from V4641 Sgr with the spectrum continuing up to 800 TeV. The detection of UHE gamma rays demonstrates that accreting BHs and their environments can operate as extremely efficient accelerators of particles out of 1 peta-electronvolt (PeV), suggesting microquasars to be important contributors to Galactic cosmic rays especially around the `knee' region.

Improved proof-by-contraction method and relative homologous entropy inequalities

The celebrated holographic entanglement entropy triggered investigations on the connections between quantum information theory and quantum gravity. An important achievement is that we have gained more insights into the quantum states. It allows us to diagnose whether a given quantum state is a holographic state, a state whose bulk dual admits semiclassical geometrical description. The effective tool of this kind of diagnosis is holographic entropy cone (HEC), an entropy space bounded by holographic entropy inequalities allowed by the theory. To fix the HEC and to prove a given holographic entropy inequality, a proof-by-contraction technique has been developed. This method heavily depends on a contraction map $f$, which is very difficult to construct especially for more-region ($n\geq 4$) cases. In this work, we develop a general and effective rule to rule out most of the cases such that $f$ can be obtained in a relatively simple way. In addition, we extend the whole framework to relative homologous entropy, a generalization of holographic entanglement entropy that is suitable for characterizing the entanglement of mixed states.

Island and Page curve for one-sided asymptotically flat black hole

Great breakthrough in solving black hole information paradox took place when semiclassical island rule for entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation was proposed in recent years. Up to now, most papers which discussed island rule of asymptotic flat black hole with $D \ge 4$ focus on eternal black hole. In this paper, we take one more step further by discussing island of "in" vacuum state which describes one-sided asymptotically flat black hole formed by gravitational collapse in $D \ge 4$. We find that island $I$ emerges at late time and saves entropy bound. And boundary of island $\partial I$ depends on the position of cutoff surface. When cutoff surface is far from horizon, $\partial I$ is inside and near horizon. When cutoff surface is set to be near horizon, $\partial I$ is outside and near horizon. This is different from the case of eternal black hole in which $\partial I$ is always outside horizon no matter cutoff surface is far from or near horizon. We will see that different states will manifestly affect $S_{\text{ent}}$ in island formula when cutoff surface is far from horizon and thus have different result for Page time.

Properties of the spherically symmetric polymer black holes

In this paper we systematically study a five-parameters class of spherically symmetric polymer black/white hole solutions, and find that only three independent combinations are physical and uniquely determine the spacetime properties. After exploring the whole 3-dimensional (3D) phase space, we find that the model has very rich physics, and depending on the choice of these parameters, various possibilities exist, including: (i) spacetimes that have the standard black/white hole structures, that is, spacetimes that are free of spacetime curvature singularities and possess two asymptotically flat regions, which are connected by a transition surface (throat) with a finite and non-zero geometric radius. The black/white hole masses measured by observers in the two asymptotically flat regions are all positive, and the surface gravity of the black (white) hole is positive (negative). (ii) Spacetimes that have wormhole-like structures, in which the two masses are all positive, but no horizons exist.(iii) Spacetimes that still possess curvature singularities, which can be either hidden inside trapped regions or naked. However, such spacetimes correspond to only some limit cases, and the necessary (but not sufficient) condition is that at least one of the two "polymerization" parameters vanishes. In addition, even for solar mass black/white holes, quantum gravitational effects can be still very large at the black/white hole horizons, again depending on the choice of the parameters.

Unitary Constraints on Semiclassical Schwarzschild Black Holes in the Presence of Island

We reconsider $D\geq4$ dimensional asymptotically flat eternal Schwarzschild black hole, and focus on the situation where the inner boundary of the radiation region is chosen to be near the horizon (i.e. $β\ll1$). The tension between the near-horizon condition and the short-distance approximation emerges in large dimensions in $[JHEP 06 (2020) 085]$. We remove this tension by introducing a more proper near horizon condition, thus the resulting island solution is well-behaved in any $D\geq4$ dimensional spacetime. Interestingly, a novel constraint is obtained in this situation as required by the existence of the island solution, which directly leads to the constraints on the size of the Schwarzschild black hole, the position of the inner boundary for the radiation region, or the value of $c\cdot\tilde{G}_{N}$ in any $D\geq4$ dimension. When considering the large $D$ limit, the constraint on the size of the Schwarzschild black hole obtained in this situation is in agreement with the result given in $[Phys.Rev.D 102 (2020) 2, 026016]$. We interpret these as the unitary constraints implied by the presence of island in semiclassical gravity.

Theoretical and observational constraints on regularized 4$D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Regularized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theory of gravity in four dimensions is a new attempt to include nontrivial contributions of Gauss-Bonnet term. In this paper, we make a detailed analysis on possible constraints of the model parameters of the theory from recent cosmological observations, and some theoretical constraints as well. Our results show that the theory with vanishing bare cosmological constant, $Λ_0$, is ruled out by the current observational value of $w_{de}$, and the observations of GW170817 and GRB 170817A as well. For nonvanishing bare cosmological constant, instead, our results show that the current observation of the speed of GWs measured by GW170817 and GRB 170817A would place a constraints on $\tildeα$, a dimensionless parameter of the theory, as $-7.78\times10^{-16}\le \tildeα \leq 3.33\times10^{-15}$.

Holographic complexity for nonlinearly charged Lifshitz black holes

Using "complexity=action" proposal we study the late time growth rate of holographic complexity for nonlinear charged Lifshitz black hole with a single horizon or two horizons. As a toy model, we consider two kinds of such black holes: nonlinear charged Lifshitz black hole and nonlinear logarithmic charged Lifshitz black hole. We find that for the black hole with two horizons, the action growth bound is satisfied. But for the black hole with a single horizon, whether the Lloyd bound is violated depends on the specific value of dimensionless coupling constants $β_{1},β_{2}$, spacetime dimension $D$ and dynamical exponent $z$.

Inequalities of Holographic Entanglement of Purification from Bit Threads

There are increasing evidences that quantum information theory has come to play a fundamental role in quantum gravity especially the holography. In this paper, we show some new potential connections between holography and quantum information theory. Particularly, by utilizing the multiflow description of the holographic entanglement of purification (HEoP) defined in relative homology, we obtain several new inequalities of HEoP under a max multiflow configuration. Each inequality derived for HEoP has a corresponding inequality of the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE). This is further confirmed by geometric analysis. In addition, we conjecture that, based on flow considerations, each property of HEE that can be derived from bit threads may have a corresponding property for HEoP that can be derived from bit threads defined in relative homology.

Information loss paradox revisited: farewell firewall?

Unitary evolution makes pure state on one Cauchy surface evolve to pure state on another Cauchy surface. Outgoing Hawking radiation is only subsystem on the late Cauchy surface. The requirement that Hawking radiation to be pure amounts to require purity of subsystem when total system is pure. We will see this requirement will lead to firewall even in \textit{flat} spacetime, and thus is invalid. Information is either stored in the entanglement between field modes inside black hole and the outgoing modes or stored in correlation between geometry and Hawking radiation when singularity is resolved by quantum gravity effects. We will give a simple argument that even in semi-classical regime, information is (at least partly) stored in correlation between geometry and Hawking radiation.

Quantum bit threads of MERA tensor network in large $c$ limit

The Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula is a crucial concept in current theory of gauge-gravity duality and emergent phenomena of geometry. Recent reinterpretation of this formula in terms of a set of "bit threads" is an interesting effort in understanding holography. In this paper, we investigate a quantum generalization of the "bit threads" based on tensor network, with particular interests in the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). We demonstrate that, in the large $c$ limit, isometries of the MERA can be regarded as "sources" (or "sinks") of the information flow, which extensively modifies the original picture of the bit threads by introducing a new variable $ρ$: density of the isometries. In this modified picture of information flow, the isometries can be viewed as generators of the flow. The strong subadditivity and related properties of the entanglement entropy are also obtained in this new picture. The large $c$ limit implies the classical gravity can be emerged from the information flow.

Holevo Bound of Entropic Uncertainty in Schwarzschild Spacetime

For a pair of incompatible quantum measurements, the total uncertainty can be bounded by a state-independent constant. However, such a bound can be violated if the quantum system is entangled with another quantum system (called memory); the quantum correlation between the systems can reduce the measurement uncertainty. On the other hand, in a curved spacetime, the presence of the Hawking radiation can increase the uncertainty in quantum measurement. The interplay of quantum correlation in the curved spacetime has become an interesting arena for studying quantum uncertainty relations. Here we demonstrate that the bounds of the entropic uncertainty relations, in the presence of memory, can be formulated in terms of the Holevo quantity, which limits how much information can be encoded in a quantum system. Specifically, we considered two examples with Dirac fields, near the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole, the Holevo bound provides a better bound than the previous bound based on the mutual information. Furthermore, if the memory moves away from the black hole, the difference between the total uncertainty and the Holevo bound remains a constant, not depending on any property of the black hole.

Holographic complexity: A tool to probe the property of reduced fidelity susceptibility

Quantum information theory along with holography play central roles in our understanding of quantum gravity. Exploring their connections will lead to profound impacts on our understanding of the modern physics and is thus a key challenge for present theory and experiments. In this paper, we investigate a recent conjectured connection between reduced fidelity susceptibility and holographic complexity (the RFS/HC duality for short). We give a quantitative proof of the duality by performing both holographic and field theoretical computations. In addition, holographic complexity in $AdS_{2+1}$ are explored and several important properties are obtained. These properties allow us, via the RFS/HC duality, to obtain a set of remarkable identities of the reduced fidelity susceptibility, which may have significant implications for our understanding of the reduced fidelity susceptibility. Moreover, utilizing these properties and the recent proposed diagnostic tool based on the fidelity susceptibility, experimental verification of the RFS/HC duality becomes possible.

Emergent geometry, thermal CFT and surface/state correspondence

We study a conjectured correspondence between any codimension two convex surface and a quantum state (SS-duality for short). By generalizing thermofield double formalism to continuum version of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) and using the SS-duality, we show that thermal geometries naturally emerge as a result of hidden quantum entanglement between boundary CFTs. We therefore propose a general framework to emerge the thermal geometry from CFT at finite temperature. As an example, the case of $2d$ CFT is considered. We calculate its information metric and show that it is either BTZ black hole or thermal AdS as expected.

Lifshitz holographic superconductor in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We study the holographic phase transition of superconductor dual to a Lifshitz black brane probed by an anisotropic scalar field in the probe limit in Hourava-Lifshitz gravity. With the use of numerical and analytical method, we investigate how the critical temperature of the condensation is affected by the Lifshitz exponent $z$, $α-$correction term in the action as well as the dimensions of the gravity. We also numerically explore the condensation of the dual operator and optical conductivity of the holographic system. Various interesting properties of the holographic condensation affected by the parameters of model are discussed.

Thermal geometry from CFT at finite temperature

We present how the thermal geometry emerges from CFT at finite temperature by using the truncated entanglement renormalization network, the cMERA. For the case of $2d$ CFT, the reduced geometry is the BTZ black hole or the thermal AdS as expectation. In order to determine which spacetimes prefer to form, we propose a cMERA description of the Hawking-Page phase transition. Our proposal is in agreement with the picture of the recent proposed surface/state correspondence.

A holographic model of d-wave superconductor vortices with Lifshitz scaling

We study analytically the $d$-wave holographic superconductors with Lifshitz scaling in the presence of external magnetic field. The vortex lattice solutions of the model have also been obtained with different Lifshitz scaling. Our results imply that holographic $d$-wave superconductor is indeed a type II one even for different Lifshitz scaling. This is the same as the conventional $d$-wave superconductors in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. Our results also indicate that the dynamical exponent $z$ has no effect to the shape of the vortex lattice even after higher order corrections (away from the phase transition point $B_c$) are included. However, it has effects on the upper critical magnetic field $B_{c_2}$ through the fact that a larger $z$ results in a smaller $B_{c_2}$ and therefore influences the size (characterized by $r_0\equiv 1/\sqrt{B_{c_2}}$) of the vortex lattices. Furthermore, close comparisons between our results and those of the Ginzburg-Landau theory reveal the fact that the upper critical magnetic field $B_{c_2}$ is inversely proportional to the square of the superconducting coherence length $ξ$, regardless of the anisotropy between space and time.

High-dimensional Lifshitz-type spacetimes, universal horizons and black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

In this paper, we present all $[(d+1)+1]$-dimensional static diagonal vacuum solutions of the non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in the IR limit, and show that they give rise to very rich Lifshitz-type structures, depending on the choice of the free parameters of the solutions. These include the Lifshitz spacetimes with or without hyperscaling violation, Lifshitz solitons, and black holes. Remarkably, even the theory breaks explicitly the Lorentz symmetry and allows generically instantaneous propagations, universal horizons still exist, which serve as one-way membranes for signals with any large velocities. In particular, particles even with infinitely large velocities would just move around on these boundaries and cannot escape to infinity. Another remarkable feature appearing in the Lifshitz-type spacetimes is that the dynamical exponent $z$ can take its values only in the ranges $1 \le z < 2$ for $d \ge 3$ and $1 \le z <\infty$ for $d = 2$, due to the stability and ghost-free conditions of the theory.

Causality Constraint on Noncritical Einstein-Weyl Gravity

We explore, in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence, the causality constraints on the Noncritical Einstein-Weyl (NEW) gravity model in five dimensions. The scalar and shear channels are considered as small metric perturbations around an AdS black brane background. Our results show that causality analysis on the propagation of these two channels imposes a new bound on the coupling of the Weyl-squared terms in the NEW gravity. This new bound imposes more stringent restrictions than those of the tachyon-free condition, improving predictive power of the theory.

Lifshitz spacetimes, solitons, and generalized BTZ black holes in quantum gravity at a Lifshitz point

In this paper, we study static vacuum solutions of quantum gravity at a fixed Lifshitz point in (2+1) dimensions, and present all the diagonal solutions in closed forms in the infrared limit. The exact solutions represent spacetimes with very rich structures: they can represent generalized BTZ black holes, Lifshitz space-times or Lifshitz solitons, in which the spacetimes are free of any kind of space-time singularities, depending on the choices of the free parameters of the solutions. We also find several classes of exact static non-diagonal solutions, which represent similar space-time structures as those given in the diagonal case. The relevance of these solutions to the non-relativistic Lifshitz-type gauge/gravity duality is discussed.

General covariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity without projectability condition and its applications to cosmology

We consider an extended theory of Horava-Lifshitz gravity with the detailed balance condition softly breaking, but without the projectability condition. With the former, the number of independent coupling constants is significantly reduced. With the latter and by extending the original foliation-preserving diffeomorphism symmetry $ {Diff}(M, {\cal{F}})$ to include a local U(1) symmetry, the spin-0 gravitons are eliminated. Thus, all the problems related to them disappear, including the instability, strong coupling, and different speeds in the gravitational sector. When the theory couples to a scalar field, we find that the scalar field is not only stable in both the ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR), but also free of the strong coupling problem, because of the presence of high-order spatial derivative terms of the scalar field. Furthermore, applying the theory to cosmology, we find that due to the additional U(1) symmetry, the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe is necessarily flat. We also investigate the scalar, vector, and tensor perturbations of the flat FRW universe, and derive the general linearized field equations for each kind of the perturbations.

Extended Hořava Gravity with Physical Ground-State Wavefunction

We propose a new extended theory of Hořava gravity based on the following three conditions: (i) UV completion, (ii) healthy IR behavior and (iii) a stable vacuum state in quantized version of the theory. Compared with other extended theories, we stress that any realistic theory of gravity must have physical ground states when quantization is performed. To fulfill the three conditions, we softly break the detailed balance but keep its basic structure unchanged. It turns out that the new model constructed in this way can avoid the strong coupling problem and remains power-counting renormalizable, moreover, it has a stable vacuum state by an appropriate choice of parameters.

Entropy function and higher derivative corrections to entropies in (anti-)de Sitter space

We first briefly discuss the relation between black hole thermodynamics and the entropy function formalism. We find that an equation which governs the relationship between Sen's entropy function and black hole entropy, can quickly give higher order corrections to entropy of pure (anti-) de Sitter space without knowing the corrected metric. We also show that near horizon geometry and the entropy function extremization is no longer required for pure (anti-)de Sitter space. The entropy of (anti-)de Sitter space and Schwarzschild-(anti-) de Sitter black holes together with Gauss-Bonnet terms, $R^2$ terms and $R^4$ terms are calculated as concrete examples.

Viscosity Bound, Causality Violation and Instability with Stringy Correction and Charge

Recently, it has been shown that if we consider the higher derivative correction, the viscosity bound conjectured to be $η/s=1/4π$ is violated and so is the causality. In this paper, we consider medium effect and the higher derivative correction simultaneously by adding charge and Gauss-Bonnet terms. We find that the viscosity bound violation is not changed by the charge. However, we find that two effects together create another instability for large momentum regime. We argue the presence of tachyonic modes and show it numerically. The stability of the black brane requires the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $λ$($=2α'/l^2$) to be smaller than 1/24. We draw a phase diagram relevant to the instability in charge-coupling space.
