Finite-data error bounds for Koopman-based prediction and control

The Koopman operator has become an essential tool for data-driven approximation of dynamical (control) systems, e.g., via extended dynamic mode decomposition. Despite its popularity, convergence results and, in particular, error bounds are still scarce. In this paper, we derive probabilistic bounds for the approximation error and the prediction error depending on the number of training data points; for both ordinary and stochastic differential equations while using either ergodic trajectories or i.i.d. samples. We illustrate these bounds by means of an example with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Moreover, we extend our analysis to (stochastic) nonlinear control-affine systems. We prove error estimates for a previously proposed approach that exploits the linearity of the Koopman generator to obtain a bilinear surrogate control system and, thus, circumvents the curse of dimensionality since the system is not autonomized by augmenting the state by the control inputs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first finite-data error analysis in the stochastic and/or control setting. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the bilinear approach by comparing it with state-of-the-art techniques showing its superiority whenever state and control are coupled.

On characteristic invariants of matrix pencils and linear relations

The relationship between linear relations and matrix pencils is investigated. Given a linear relation, we introduce its Weyr characteristic. If the linear relation is the range (or the kernel) representation of a given matrix pencil, we show that there is a correspondence between this characteristic and the Kronecker canonical form of the pencil. This relationship is exploited to obtain estimations on the invariant characteristics of matrix pencils under rank one perturbations.

Optimal control of port-Hamiltonian descriptor systems with minimal energy supply

We consider the singular optimal control problem of minimizing the energy supply of linear dissipative port-Hamiltonian descriptor systems subject to control and terminal state constraints. To this end, after reducing the problem to an ODE with feed-through term, we derive an input-state turnpike towards a subspace for optimal control of generalized port-Hamiltonian ordinary differential equations. We study the reachability properties of the system and prove that optimal states exhibit a turnpike behavior with respect to the conservative subspace. By means of the port-Hamiltonian structure, we show that, despite control constraints, this turnpike property is global in the initial state. Further, we characterize the class of dissipative Hamiltonian matrices and pencils.

Optimal control of thermodynamic port-Hamiltonian Systems

We consider the problem of minimizing the entropy, energy, or exergy production for state transitions of irreversible port-Hamiltonian systems subject to control constraints. Via a dissipativity-based analysis we show that optimal solutions exhibit the manifold turnpike phenomenon with respect to the manifold of thermodynamic equilibria. We illustrate our analytical findings via numerical results for a heat exchanger.

Relatively bounded perturbations of J-non-negative operators

We improve known perturbation results for self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces and prove spectral enclosures for diagonally dominant $J$-self-adjoint operator matrices. These are used in the proof of the central result, a perturbation theorem for $J$-non-negative operators. The results are applied to singular indefinite Sturm-Liouville operators with $L^p$-potentials. Known bounds on the non-real eigenvalues of such operators are improved.

Strict dissipativity for generalized linear-quadratic problems in infinite dimensions

We analyze strict dissipativity of generalized linear quadratic optimal control problems on Hilbert spaces. Here, the term ``generalized'' refers to cost functions containing both quadratic and linear terms. We characterize strict pre-dissipativity with a quadratic storage function via coercivity of a particular Lyapunov-like quadratic form. Further, we show that under an additional algebraic assumption, strict pre-dissipativity can be strengthened to strict dissipativity. Last, we relate the obtained characterizations of dissipativity with exponential detectability.

Time-Frequency Shift Invariance of Gabor Spaces with an $S_0$-Generator

We consider Gabor Riesz sequences generated by a lattice $Λ\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ and a window function $g \in L^2(\mathbb{R})$ which is well localized in both time and frequency. When $g$ belongs to the Feichtinger algebra, we prove that only those time-frequency shifts with parameters from the lattice $Λ$ leave the corresponding Gabor space invariant. This improves on earlier results where only lattices of rational density were considered. A slightly weaker result is proved - again for lattices of general density - under the regularity assumptions of the classical Balian-Low theorem, where both $g$ and its Fourier transform belong to the Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. The proof relies on a combination of methods from time-frequency analysis and the theory of $C^\ast$-algebras, specifically the so-called irrational rotation algebra.

Bessel orbits of normal operators

Given a bounded normal operator $A$ in a Hilbert space and a fixed vector $x$, we elaborate on the problem of finding necessary and sufficient conditions under which $(A^kx)_{k\in\mathbb N}$ constitutes a Bessel sequence. We provide a characterization in terms of the measure $\|E(\cdot)x\|^2$, where $E$ is the spectral measure of the operator $A$. In the separately treated special cases where $A$ is unitary or selfadjoint we obtain more explicit characterizations. Finally, we apply our results to a sequence $(A^kx)_{k\in\mathbb N}$, where $A$ arises from the heat equation. The problem is motivated by and related to the new field of Dynamical Sampling which was recently initiated by Aldroubi et al.

The effect of perturbations of linear operators on their polar decomposition

The effect of matrix perturbations on the polar decomposition has been studied by several authors and various results are known. However, for operators between infinite-dimensional spaces the problem has not been considered so far. Here, we prove in particular that the partial isometry in the polar decomposition of an operator is stable under perturbations, given that kernel and range of original and perturbed operator satisfy a certain condition. In the matrix case, this condition is weaker than the usually imposed equal-rank condition. It includes the case of semi-Fredholm operators with agreeing nullities and deficiencies, respectively. In addition, we prove a similar perturbation result where the ranges or the kernels of the two operators are assumed to be sufficiently close to each other in the gap metric.

The Effect of Perturbations of Operator-Valued Frame Sequences and Fusion Frames on Their Duals

Fusion frames, and, more generally, operator-valued frame sequences are generalizations of classical frames, which are today a standard notion when redundant, yet stable sequences are required. However, the question of stability of duals with respect to perturbations has not been satisfactorily answered. In this paper, we quantitatively measure this stability by considering the associated deviations of the canonical and alternate dual sequences from the original ones. It is proven that operator-valued frame sequences are indeed stable in this sense. Along the way, we also generalize existing definitions for fusion frame duals to the infinite-dimensional situation and analyze how they perform with respect to a list of desiderata which, to our minds, a fusion frame dual should satisfy. Finally, we prove a similar stability result as above for fusion frames and their canonical duals.

Measures of scalability

Scalable frames are frames with the property that the frame vectors can be rescaled resulting in tight frames. However, if a frame is not scalable, one has to aim for an approximate procedure. For this, in this paper we introduce three novel quantitative measures of the closeness to scalability for frames in finite dimensional real Euclidean spaces. Besides the natural measure of scalability given by the distance of a frame to the set of scalable frames, another measure is obtained by optimizing a quadratic functional, while the third is given by the volume of the ellipsoid of minimal volume containing the symmetrized frame. After proving that these measures are equivalent in a certain sense, we establish bounds on the probability of a randomly selected frame to be scalable. In the process, we also derive new necessary and sufficient conditions for a frame to be scalable.

Scalable Frames and Convex Geometry

The recently introduced and characterized scalable frames can be considered as those frames which allow for perfect preconditioning in the sense that the frame vectors can be rescaled to yield a tight frame. In this paper we define $m$-scalability, a refinement of scalability based on the number of non-zero weights used in the rescaling process, and study the connection between this notion and elements from convex geometry. Finally, we provide results on the topology of scalable frames. In particular, we prove that the set of scalable frames with "small" redundancy is nowhere dense in the set of frames.

Spectral Points of Type $π_+$ and Type $π_-$ of Closed Operators in Indefinite Inner Product Spaces

We introduce the notion of spectral points of type $π_+$ and type $π_-$ of closed operators $A$ in a Hilbert space which is equipped with an indefinite inner product. It is shown that these points are stable under compact perturbations. In the second part of the paper we assume that $A$ is symmetric with respect to the indefinite inner product and prove that the growth of the resolvent of $A$ is of finite order in a neighborhood of a real spectral point of type $π_+$ or $π_-$ which is not in the interior of the spectrum of $A$. Finally, we prove that there exists a local spectral function on intervals of type $π_+$ or $π_-$.

Bounds on the non-real spectrum of differential operators with indefinite weights

Ordinary and partial differential operators with an indefinite weight function can be viewed as bounded perturbations of non-negative operators in Krein spaces. Under the assumption that 0 and $\infty$ are not singular critical points of the unperturbed operator it is shown that a bounded additive perturbation leads to an operator whose non-real spectrum is contained in a compact set and with definite type real spectrum outside this set. The main results are quantitative estimates for this set, which are applied to Sturm-Liouville and second order elliptic partial differential operators with indefinite weights on unbounded domains.

Indefinite Sturm-Liouville operators with periodic coefficients

We investigate the spectral properties of the maximal operator $A$ associated with a differential expression $\frac 1 w(-\frac d {dx}(p\frac d {dx}) + q)$ with real-valued periodic coefficients $w$, $p$ and $q$ where $w$ changes sign. It turns out that the non-real spectrum of $A$ is bounded, symmetric with respect to the real axis and consists of a finite number of analytic curves. The real spectrum is band-shaped and neither bounded from above nor from below. We characterize the finite spectral singularities of $A$ and prove that there is only a finite number of them. Finally, we provide a condition on the coefficients which ensures that $\infty$ is not a spectral singularity of $A$.

Local spectral theory for normal operators in Krein spaces

Sign type spectra are an important tool in the investigation of spectral properties of selfadjoint operators in Krein spaces. It is our aim to show that also sign type spectra for normal operators in Krein spaces provide insight in the spectral nature of the operator: If the real part and the imaginary part of a normal operator in a Krein space have real spectra only and if the growth of the resolvent of the imaginary part (close to the real axis) is of finite order, then the normal operator possesses a local spectral function defined for Borel subsets of the spectrum which belong to positive (negative) type spectrum. Moreover, the restriction of the normal operator to the spectral subspace corresponding to such a Borel subset is a normal operator in some Hilbert space. In particular, if the spectrum consists entirely out of positive and negative type spectrum, then the operator is similar to a normal operator in some Hilbert space. We use this result to show the existence of operator roots of a class of quadratic operator polynomials with normal coefficients.

Scalable Frames

Tight frames can be characterized as those frames which possess optimal numerical stability properties. In this paper, we consider the question of modifying a general frame to generate a tight frame by rescaling its frame vectors; a process which can also be regarded as perfect preconditioning of a frame by a diagonal operator. A frame is called scalable, if such a diagonal operator exists. We derive various characterizations of scalable frames, thereby including the infinite-dimensional situation. Finally, we provide a geometric interpretation of scalability in terms of conical surfaces.

Locally definite normal operators in Krein spaces

We introduce the spectral points of two-sided positive type of bounded normal operators in Krein spaces. It is shown that a normal operator has a local spectral function on sets which are of two-sided positive type. In addition, we prove that the Riesz-Dunford spectral subspace corresponding to a spectral set which is only of positive type is uniformly positive. The restriction of the operator to this subspace is then normal in a Hilbert space.

Spectral functions of products of selfadjoint operators

Given two possibly unbounded selfadjoint operators A and G such that the resolvent sets of AG and GA are non-empty, it is shown that the operator AG has a spectral function on IR with singularities if there exists a non-zero polynomial p such that the symmetric operator Gp(AG) is non-negative. This result generalizes a well-known theorem for definitizable operators in Krein spaces.

Variation of discrete spectra of non-negative operators in Krein spaces

We study the variation of the discrete spectrum of a bounded non-negative operator in a Krein space under a non-negative Schatten class perturbation of order $p$. It turns out that there exist so-called extended enumerations of discrete eigenvalues of the unperturbed and the perturbed operator, respectively, whose difference is an $\ell^p$-sequence. This result is a Krein space version of a theorem by T.Kato for bounded selfadjoint operators in Hilbert spaces.

Local Definitizability of $T^{[*]}T$ and $TT^{[*]}$

The spectral properties of two products $AB$ and $BA$ of possibly unbounded operators $A$ and $B$ in a Banach space are considered. The results are applied in the comparison of local spectral properties of the operators $T^{[*]} T$ and $TT^{[*]} $ in a Krein space. It is shown that under the assumption that both operators $T^{[*]} T$ and $T^{[*]} $ have non-empty resolvent sets, the operator $T^{[*]} T$ is locally definitizable if and only if $TT^{[*]} $ is. In this context the critical points of both operators are compared.
