Cloaking, Trapping and Superlensing of Lamb Waves with Negative Refraction

We report on experimental and numerical implementations of devices based on the negative refraction of elastic guided waves, the so-called Lamb waves. Consisting in plates of varying thickness, these devices rely on the concept of complementary media, where a particular layout of negative index media can cloak an object with its anti-object or trap waves around a negative corner. The diffraction cancellation operated by negative refraction is investigated by means of laser ultrasound experiments. However, unlike original theoretical predictions, these intriguing wave phenomena remain, nevertheless, limited to the propagating component of the wave-field. To go beyond the diffraction limit, negative refraction is combined with the concept of metalens, a device converting the evanescent components of an object into propagating waves. The transport of an evanescent wave-field is then possible from an object plane to a far-field imaging plane. Twenty years after Pendry's initial proposal, this work thus paves the way towards an elastic superlens.

On Cayley graphs over generalized dicyclic groups

Recently, several works by a number of authors have studied integrality, distance integrality, and distance powers of Cayley graphs over some finite groups, such as dicyclic groups and (generalized) dihedral groups. Our aim is to generalize and/or to give analogues of these results for generalized dicyclic groups. For example, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Cayley graph over a generalized dicyclic group to be integral (i.e., all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix are in Z\mathbb{Z}). We also obtain sufficient conditions for the integrality of all distance powers of a Cayley graph over a given generalized dicyclic group. These results extend works on dicyclic groups by Cheng--Feng--Huang and Cheng--Feng--Liu--Lu--Stevanovic, respectively.

On finite embedding problems with abelian kernels

Given a Hilbertian field kk and a finite set S\mathcal{S} of Krull valuations of kk, we show that every finite split embedding problem G→Gal(L/k)G \rightarrow {\rm{Gal}}(L/k) over kk with abelian kernel has a solu\-tion Gal(F/k)→G{\rm{Gal}}(F/k) \rightarrow G such that every v∈Sv \in \mathcal{S} is totally split in F/LF/L. Two applications are then given. Firstly, we solve a non-constant variant of the Beckmann--Black problem for solvable groups: given a field kk and a non-trivial finite solvable group GG, every Galois field extension F/kF/k of group GG is shown to occur as the specialization at some t0∈kt_0 \in k of some Galois field extension E/k(T)E/k(T) of group GG with E⊈k‾(T)E \not \subseteq \overline{k}(T). Secondly, we contribute to inverse Galois theory over division rings, by showing that, for every division ring HH and every automorphism σσ of HH of finite order, all finite semiabelian groups occur as Galois groups over the skew field of fractions H(T,σ)H(T, σ) of the twisted polynomial ring H[T,σ]H[T, σ].

Le problème inverse de Galois sur les corps des fractions tordus à indéterminée centrale

In this article, we show that the Inverse Galois Problem over a skew field HH of finite dimension over its center kk is equivalent to a variant of the Inverse Galois Problem over kk involving a polynomial constraint. As an application, we show that if kk contains an ample field, then the Inverse Galois Problem has a positive answer over the skew field H(t)H(t) of rational fractions with central indeterminate.

On parametric and generic polynomials with one parameter

Given fields k⊆Lk \subseteq L, our results concern one parameter LL-parametric polynomials over kk, and their relation to generic polynomials. The former are polynomials P(T,Y)∈k[T][Y]P(T,Y) \in k[T][Y] of group GG which parametrize all Galois extensions of LL of group GG via specialization of TT in LL, and the latter are those which are LL-parametric for every field L⊇kL \supseteq k. We show, for example, that being LL-parametric with LL taken to be the single field C((V))(U)\mathbb{C}((V))(U) is in fact sufficient for a polynomial P(T,Y)∈C[T][Y]P(T, Y) \in \mathbb{C}[T][Y] to be generic. As a corollary, we obtain a complete list of one parameter generic polynomials over a given field of characteristic 0, complementing the classical literature on the topic. Our approach also applies to an old problem of Schinzel: subject to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, we provide one parameter families of affine curves over number fields, all with a rational point, but with no rational generic point.

Rational pullbacks of Galois covers

The finite subgroups of PGL2(C){\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{C}) are shown to be the only finite groups GG with this property: for some integer r0r_0 (depending on GG), all Galois covers X→PC1X\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}} of group GG can be obtained by pulling back those with at most r0r_0 branch points along non-constant rational maps PC1→PC1\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}} \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}. For G⊂PGL2(C)G\subset {\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{C}), it is in fact enough to pull back one well-chosen cover with at most 33 branch points. A consequence of the converse for inverse Galois theory is that, for G⊄PGL2(C)G\not \subset {\rm PGL}_2({\mathbb{C}}), letting the branch point number grow provides truly new Galois realizations F/C(T)F/{\mathbb{C}}(T) of GG. Another application is that the ``Beckmann--Black'' property that ``any two Galois covers of PC1\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}} with the same group GG are always pullbacks of another Galois cover of group GG'' only holds if G⊂PGL2(C)G\subset {\rm PGL}_2({\mathbb{C}}).

Density results for specialization sets of Galois covers

We provide evidence for this conclusion: given a finite Galois cover f:X→PQ1f: X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q} of group GG, almost all (in a density sense) realizations of GG over Q\mathbb{Q} do not occur as specializations of ff. We show that this holds if the number of branch points of ff is sufficiently large, under the abc-conjecture and, possibly, the lower bound predicted by the Malle conjecture for the number of Galois extensions of Q\mathbb{Q} of given group and bounded discriminant. This widely extends a result of Granville on the lack of Q\mathbb{Q}-rational points on quadratic twists of hyperelliptic curves over Q\mathbb{Q} with large genus, under the abc-conjecture (a diophantine reformulation of the case G=Z/2ZG=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} of our result). As a further evidence, we exhibit a few finite groups GG for which the above conclusion holds unconditionally for almost all covers of PQ1\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q} of group GG. We also introduce a local-global principle for specializations of Galois covers f:X→PQ1f: X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q} and show that it often fails if ff has abelian Galois group and sufficiently many branch points, under the abc-conjecture. On the one hand, such a local-global conclusion underscores the "smallness" of the specialization set of a Galois cover of PQ1\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q}. On the other hand, it allows to generate conditionally "many" curves over Q\mathbb{Q} failing the Hasse principle, thus generalizing a recent result of Clark and Watson devoted to the hyperelliptic case.

Hilbert specialization results with local conditions

Given a field kk of characteristic zero and an indeterminate TT, the main topic of the paper is the construction of specializations of any given finite extension of k(T)k(T) of degree nn that are degree nn field extensions of kk with specified local behavior at any given finite set of primes of kk. First, we give a full non-Galois analog of a result with a ramified type conclusion from a preceding paper and next we prove a unifying statement which combines our results and previous work devoted to the unramified part of the problem in the case kk is a number field.

On parametric extensions over number fields

Given a number field FF, a finite group GG and an indeterminate TT, {\it{a GG-parametric extension over FF}} is a finite Galois extension E/F(T)E/F(T) with Galois group GG and E/FE/F regular that has all the Galois extensions of FF with Galois group GG among its specializations. We are mainly interested in producing non-GG-parametric extensions, which relates to classical questions in inverse Galois theory like the Beckmann-Black problem. Building on a strategy developed in previous papers, we show that there exists at least one non-GG-parametric extension over FF for a given non-trivial finite group GG and a given number field FF under the sole necessary condition that GG occurs as the Galois group of a Galois extension E/F(T)E/F(T) with E/FE/F regular.

Twists of superelliptic curves without rational points

Let n≥2n\geq 2 be an integer, FF a number field, OFO_F the integral closure of Z\mathbb{Z} in FF and NN a positive multiple of nn. The paper deals with degree NN polynomials P(T)∈OF[T]P(T) \in O_F[T] such that the superelliptic curve Yn=P(T)Y^n=P(T) has twists Yn=d⋅P(T)Y^n=d\cdot P(T) without FF-rational points. We show that this condition holds if the Galois group of P(T)P(T) over FF has an element which fixes no root of P(T)P(T). Two applications are given. Firstly, we prove that the proportion of degree NN polynomials P(T)∈OF[T]P(T) \in O_F[T] with height bounded by HH and such that the associated curve satisfies the desired condition tends to 1 as HH tends to ∞\infty. Secondly, we connect the problem with the recent notion of non-parametric extensions and give new examples of such extensions with cyclic Galois groups.

Specialization results and ramification conditions

Given a hilbertian field kk of characteristic zero and a finite Galois extension E/k(T)E/k(T) with group GG such that E/kE/k is regular, we produce some specializations of E/k(T)E/k(T) at points t0∈P1(k)t_0 \in \mathbb{P}^1(k) which have the same Galois group but also specified inertia groups at finitely many given primes. This result has two main applications. Firstly we conjoin it with previous works to obtain Galois extensions of Q\mathbb{Q} of various finite groups with specified local behavior - ramified or unramified - at finitely many given primes. Secondly, in the case kk is a number field, we provide criteria for the extension E/k(T)E/k(T) to satisfy this property: at least one Galois extension F/kF/k of group GG is not a specialization of E/k(T)E/k(T).

Parametric Galois Extensions

Given a field kk and a finite group HH, {\it{an HH-parametric extension over kk}} is a finite Galois extension of k(T)k(T) of Galois group containing HH which is regular over kk and has all the Galois extensions of kk of group HH among its specializations. We are mainly interested in producing non HH-parametric extensions, which relates to classical questions in inverse Galois theory like the Beckmann-Black problem and the existence of one parameter generic polynomials. We develop a general approach started in a preceding paper and provide new non parametricity criteria and new examples.

Specialization results in Galois theory

The paper has three main applications. The first one is this Hilbert-Grunwald statement. If $f:X\rightarrow \Pp^1$ is a degree nn $\Qq$-cover with monodromy group SnS_n over $\bar\Qq$, and finitely many suitably big primes pp are given with partitions {dp,1,...,dp,sp}\{d_{p,1},..., d_{p,s_p}\} of nn, there exist infinitely many specializations of ff at points $t_0\in \Qq$ that are degree nn field extensions with residue degrees dp,1,...,dp,spd_{p,1},..., d_{p,s_p} at each prescribed prime pp. The second one provides a description of the se-pa-ra-ble closure of a PAC field kk of characteristic p≠2p\not=2: it is generated by all elements yy such that ym−y∈ky^m-y\in k for some m≥2m\geq 2. The third one involves Hurwitz moduli spaces and concerns fields of definition of covers. A common tool is a criterion for an étale algebra ∏lEl/k\prod_lE_l/k over a field kk to be the specialization of a kk-cover f:X→Bf:X\rightarrow B at some point t0∈B(k)t_0\in B(k). The question is reduced to finding kk-rational points on a certain kk-variety, and then studied over the various fields kk of our applications.

preprint2011arXiv

Twisted covers and specializations

The central topic is this question: is a given kk-étale algebra ∏lEl/k\prod_lE_l/k the specialization of a given kk-cover f:X→Bf:X\rightarrow B at some point t0∈B(k)t_0\in B(k)? Our main tool is a {\it twisting lemma} that reduces the problem to finding kk-rational points on a certain kk-variety. Previous forms of this twisting lemma are generalized and unified. New applications are given: a Grunwald form of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem over number fields, a non-Galois variant of the Tchebotarev theorem for function fields over finite fields, some general specialization properties of covers over PAC or ample fields.
