Bounded cohomology, quotient extensions, and hierarchical hyperbolicity

We call a central extension bounded if its Euler class is represented by a bounded cocycle. We prove that a bounded central extension of a hierarchically hyperbolic group (HHG) is still a HHG; conversely if a central extension is a HHG, then the extension is bounded, and under a further mild assumption the quotient is commensurable to a HHG. Motivated by questions on hierarchical hyperbolicity of quotients of mapping class groups, we therefore consider the general problem of determining when a quotient of a bounded central extension is still bounded, which we prove to be equivalent to an extendability problem for quasihomomorphisms. Finally, we show that quotients of the 4-strands braid group by suitable powers of a pseudo-Anosov are HHG, and in fact bounded central extensions of some HHG. We also speculate on how to extend the previous result to all mapping class groups.

Nearly-linear solution to the word problem for 3-manifold groups

We show that the word problem for any 3-manifold group is solvable in time $O(n\log^3 n)$. Our main contribution is the proof that the word problem for admissible graphs of groups, in the sense of Croke and Kleiner, is solvable in $O(n\log n)$; this covers fundamental groups of non-geometric graph manifolds. Similar methods also give that the word problem for free products can be solved ``almost as quickly'' as the word problem in the factors.

Non-solutions to mixed equations in acylindrically hyperbolic groups coming from random walks

A mixed equation in a group $G$ is given by a non-trivial element $w (x)$ of the free product $G \ast \mathbb{Z}$, and a solution is some $g\in G$ such that $w(g)$ is the identity. For $G$ acylindrically hyperbolic with trivial finite radical (e.g. torsion-free) we show that any mixed equation of length $n$ has a non-solution of length comparable to $\log(n)$, which is the best possible bound. Similarly, we show that there is a common non-solution of length $O(n)$ to all mixed equations of length $n$, again the best possible bound. In fact, in both cases we show that a random walk of appropriate length yields a non-solution with positive probability.

The word problem for free groups cannot be solved in linear time*

*by a standard (one-tape) Turing machine. It is well-known that the word problem for hyperbolic groups, whence in particular for free groups, can be solved in linear time. However, these algorithms run on machines more complicated than a standard Turing machine. By contrast, in this note we show that a standard Turing machine cannot solve the word problem for the free group on two generators in less than quadratic time.

Complete topological descriptions of certain Morse boundaries

We study direct limits of embedded Cantor sets and embedded \sier curves. We show that under appropriate conditions on the embeddings, all limits of Cantor spaces give rise to homeomorphic spaces, called $ω$-Cantor spaces, and similarly, all limits of \sier curves give homeomorphic spaces, called to $ω$-\sier curves. We then show that the former occur naturally as Morse boundaries of right-angled Artin groups and fundamental groups of non-geometric graph manifolds, while the latter occur as Morse boundaries of fundamental groups of finite-volume, cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Large deviation principles for non-elementary random walks on hyperbolic spaces

We show that the displacement and translation distance of non-elementary random walks on isometry groups of hyperbolic spaces satisfy large deviation principles with the same rate function $I$. Roughly, this means that there exists function $I(t)$ which accurately predicts the exponential decay rate of the probability that the translation distance of a random product of length $n$ is $tn$, and similarly for the displacement. This settles a special case of a conjecture concerning the large deviation principle for the spectral radius of random matrix products. In a second part, we give a characterization of the effective support of the rate function only in terms of the deterministic notion of joint stable length. Finally, as a by-product of our techniques, we deduce some further deterministic results on the asymptotics of a bounded set of isometries. Some of the results in this paper were obtained simultaneously and independently by Boulanger--Mathieu as we discuss in the introduction.

Quasiflats in hierarchically hyperbolic spaces

The rank of a hierarchically hyperbolic space is the maximal number of unbounded factors in a standard product region. For hierarchically hyperbolic groups, this coincides with the maximal dimension of a quasiflat. Examples for which the rank coincides with familiar quantities include: the dimension of maximal Dehn twist flats for mapping class groups, the maximal rank of a free abelian subgroup for right-angled Coxeter and Artin groups, and, for the Weil--Petersson metric, the rank is the integer part of half the complex dimension of Teichmüller space. We prove that any quasiflat of dimension equal to the rank lies within finite distance of a union of standard orthants (under a mild condition satisfied by all natural examples). This resolves outstanding conjectures when applied to various examples. For mapping class group, we verify a conjecture of Farb; for Teichmüller space we answer a question of Brock; for CAT(0) cubical groups, we handle special cases including right-angled Coxeter groups. An important ingredient in the proof is that the hull of any finite set in an HHS is quasi-isometric to a CAT(0) cube complex of dimension bounded by the rank. We deduce a number of applications. For instance, we show that any quasi-isometry between HHSs induces a quasi-isometry between certain simpler HHSs. This allows one, for example, to distinguish quasi-isometry classes of right-angled Artin/Coxeter groups. Another application is to quasi-isometric rigidity. Our tools in many cases allow one to reduce the problem of quasi-isometric rigidity for a given hierarchically hyperbolic group to a combinatorial problem. We give a new proof of quasi-isometric rigidity of mapping class groups, which, given our general quasiflats theorem, uses simpler combinatorial arguments than in previous proofs.

Dehn filling Dehn twists

Let $Σ_{g,p}$ be the genus--$g$ oriented surface with $p$ punctures, with either $g>0$ or $p>3$. We show that $MCG(Σ_{g,p})/DT$ is acylindrically hyperbolic where $DT$ is the normal subgroup of the mapping class group $MCG(Σ_{g,p})$ generated by $K^{th}$ powers of Dehn twists about curves in $Σ_{g,p}$ for suitable $K$. Moreover, we show that in low complexity $MCG(Σ_{g,p})/DT$ is in fact hyperbolic. In particular, for $3g-3+p\leq 2$, we show that the mapping class group $MCG(Σ_{g,p})$ is fully residually non-elementary hyperbolic and admits an affine isometric action with unbounded orbits on some $L^q$ space. Moreover, if every hyperbolic group is residually finite, then every convex-cocompact subgroup of $MCG(Σ_{g,p})$ is separable. The aforementioned results follow from general theorems about composite rotating families that come from a collection of subgroups of vertex stabilisers for the action of a group $G$ on a hyperbolic graph $X$. We give conditions ensuring that the graph $X/N$ is again hyperbolic and various properties of the action of $G$ on $X$ persist for the action of $G/N$ on $X/N$.

Bounded cohomology and virtually free hyperbolically embedded subgroups

Using a probabilistic argument we show that the second bounded cohomology of an acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$ (e.g., a non-elementary hyperbolic or relatively hyperbolic group, non-exceptional mapping class group, ${\rm Out}(F_n)$, \dots) embeds via the natural restriction maps into the inverse limit of the second bounded cohomologies of its virtually free subgroups, and in fact even into the inverse limit of the second bounded cohomologies of its hyperbolically embedded virtually free subgroups. This result is new and non-trivial even in the case where $G$ is a (non-free) hyperbolic group. The corresponding statement fails in general for the third bounded cohomology, even for surface groups.

Random subgroups of acylindrically hyperbolic groups and hyperbolic embeddings

Let G be an acylindrically hyperbolic group. We consider a random subgroup H in G, generated by a finite collection of independent random walks. We show that, with asymptotic probability one, such a random subgroup H of G is a free group, and the semidirect product of H acting on E(G) is hyperbolically embedded in G, where E(G) is the unique maximal finite normal subgroup of G.

Infinitely presented graphical small cancellation groups are acylindrically hyperbolic

We prove that infinitely presented graphical $Gr(7)$ small cancellation groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. In particular, infinitely presented classical $C(7)$-groups and, hence, classical $C'(\frac{1}{6})$-groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. We also prove the analogous statements for the larger class of graphical small cancellation presentations over free products. We construct infinitely presented classical $C'(\frac{1}{6})$-groups that provide new examples of divergence functions of groups.

Characterising actions on trees yielding non-trivial quasimorphisms

We study the construction of quasimorphisms on groups acting on trees introduced by Monod and Shalom, that we call median quasimorphisms, and in particular we fully characterise actions on trees that give rise to non-trivial median quasimorphisms. Roughly speaking, either the action is highly transitive on geodesics, it fixes a point in the boundary, or there exists an infinite family of non-trivial median quasimorphisms. In particular, in the last case the second bounded cohomology of the group is infinite dimensional as a vector space. As an application, we show that a cocompact lattice in a product of trees only has trivial quasimorphisms if and only if both closures of the projections on the two factors are locally $\infty$-transitive.

Contracting elements and random walks

We define a new notion of contracting element of a group and we show that contracting elements coincide with hyperbolic elements in relatively hyperbolic groups, pseudo-Anosovs in mapping class groups, rank one isometries in groups acting properly on proper CAT(0) spaces, elements acting hyperbolically on the Bass-Serre tree in graph manifold groups. We also define a related notion of weakly contracting element, and show that those coincide with hyperbolic elements in groups acting acylindrically on hyperbolic spaces and with iwips in $Out(F_n)$, $n\geq 3$. We prove that any simple random walk in a non-elementary finitely generated subgroup containing a (weakly) contracting element ends up in a non-(weakly-)contracting element with exponentially decaying probability. Also, we show that each (weakly) contracting element is contained in a hyperbolically embedded elementary subgroup.

Embedding relatively hyperbolic groups in products of trees

We show that a relatively hyperbolic group quasi-isometrically embeds in a product of finitely many trees if the peripheral subgroups do, and we provide an estimate on the minimal number of trees needed. Applying our result to the case of 3-manifolds, we show that fundamental groups of closed 3-manifolds have linearly controlled asymptotic dimension at most 8. To complement this result, we observe that fundamental groups of Haken 3-manifolds with non-empty boundary have asymptotic dimension 2.

Quasi-convexity of hyperbolically embedded subgroups

We show that any infinite order element $g$ of a virtually cyclic hyperbolically embedded subgroup of a group $G$ is Morse, that is to say any quasi-geodesic connecting points in the cyclic group $C$ generated by $g$ stays close to $C$. This answers a question of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin. What is more, we show that hyperbolically embedded subgroups are quasi-convex. Finally, we give a definition of what it means for a collection of subspaces of a metric space to be hyperbolically embedded and we show that axes of pseudo-Anosovs are hyperbolically embedded in Teichmüller space endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric.

Rigidity of high dimensional graph manifolds

We define the class of high dimensional graph manifolds. These are compact smooth manifolds supporting a decomposition into finitely many pieces, each of which is diffeomorphic to the product of a torus with a finite volume hyperbolic manifold with toric cusps. The various pieces are attached together via affine maps of the boundary tori. We require all the hyperbolic factors in the pieces to have dimension at least 3. Our main goal is to study this class of graph manifolds from the viewpoint of rigidity theory. We show that, in high dimensions, the Borel conjecture holds for our graph manifolds. We also show that smooth rigidity holds within the class: two graph manifolds are homotopy equivalent if and only if they are diffeomorphic. We introduce the notion of irreducible graph manifolds, which form a subclass which has better coarse geometric properties. We establish some structure theory for finitely generated groups which are quasi-isometric to the fundamental group of an irreducible graph manifold: any such group has a graph of groups splitting with strong constraints on the edge and vertex groups. Finally, we prove that in every dimension >3 there exist examples of irreducible graph manifolds which do not support any locally CAT(0) metric.

Tracking rates of random walks

We show that simple random walks on (non-trivial) relatively hyperbolic groups stay $O(\log(n))$-close to geodesics, where $n$ is the number of steps of the walk. Using similar techniques we show that simple random walks in mapping class groups stay $O(\sqrt{n\log(n)})$-close to geodesics and hierarchy paths. Along the way, we also prove a refinement of the result that mapping class groups have quadratic divergence. An application of our theorem for relatively hyperbolic groups is that random triangles in non-trivial relatively hyperbolic groups are $O(\log(n))$-thin, random points have $O(\log(n))$-small Gromov product and that in many cases the average Dehn function is subasymptotic to the Dehn function.

On metric relative hyperbolicity

We show the equivalence of several characterizations of relative hyperbolicity for metric spaces, and obtain extra information about geodesics in a relatively hyperbolic space. We apply this to characterize hyperbolically embedded subgroups in terms of nice actions on (relatively) hyperbolic spaces. We also study the divergence of (properly) relatively hyperbolic groups, in particular showing that it is at least exponential. Our main tool is the generalization of a result proved by Bowditch for hyperbolic spaces: if a family of paths in a space satisfies a list of properties specific to geodesics in a relatively hyperbolic space then the space is relatively hyperbolic and the paths are close to geodesics.

The fundamental group of a locally finite graph with ends: a hyperfinite approach

The end compactification |Γ| of the locally finite graph Γis the union of the graph and its ends, endowed with a suitable topology. We show that π_1(|Γ|) embeds into a nonstandard free group with hyperfinitely many generators, i.e. an ultraproduct of finitely generated free groups, and that the embedding we construct factors through an embedding into an inverse limit of free groups, recovering a result of Diestel and Sprüssel.

Tree-graded asymptotic cones

We study the bilipschitz equivalence type of tree-graded spaces, showing that asymptotic cones of relatively hyperbolic groups (resp. asymptotic cones of groups containing a cut-point) only depend on the bilipschitz equivalence types of the pieces in the standard (resp. minimal) tree-graded structure. In particular, the asymptotic cones of many relatively hyperbolic groups do not depend on the scaling factor. We also describe the asymptotic cones as above "explicitly". Part of these results were obtained independently and simultaneously by D. Osin and M. Sapir.

Virtual Amalgamation of Relatively Quasiconvex Subgroups

For relatively hyperbolic groups, we investigate conditions guaranteeing that the subgroup generated by two relatively quasiconvex subgroups $Q_1$ and $Q_2$ is relatively quasiconvex and isomorphic to $Q_1 \ast_{Q_1 \cap Q_2} Q_2$. The main theorem extends results for quasiconvex subgroups of word-hyperbolic groups, and results for discrete subgroups of isometries of hyperbolic spaces.

Iterated asymptotic cones

Iterated asymptotic cones have been used by Druţu and Sapir to construct a group with uncountably many pairwise non-homeomorphic asymptotic cones. In this paper we define a class of metric spaces which display a wide range of behaviors with respect to iterated asymptotic cones, and we use those to construct examples within the class of groups. Namely, we will show that there exists a group whose iterated cones are pairwise non-homeomorphic, or periodically homeomorphic.
