Analysis of persistence-based solar irradiance forecasting benchmarks

In this work we analyse a set of benchmark methods for solar irradiance forecasting based on the clear-sky index, namely, persistence, climatology, smart-persistence and convex combination (CC) of persistence and climatology. To assess the boundaries of the benchmarks, we include in the analysis a simple least squares regression technique that uses the last five past samples. For the methods that need data adjustment, we also analyze their variation with different training sets. This work is done for intra-day forecast of global solar horizontal irradiance with 10-minutes and hourly forecast horizons. Our results, obtained in the south-east region of South America known as Pampa Húmeda, confirm the benchmark recommendation, showing that the CC method is exigent for RMSD as it achieves almost the same performance of the more complex linear combination of past measurements. We also observe that the benchmarks have different behavior depending on the metric, as the most exigent benchmark for one metric is not necessarily the most exigent for another.

End-to-end NILM System Using High Frequency Data and Neural Networks

Improving energy efficiency is a necessity in the fight against climate change. Non Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) systems give important information about the household consumption that can be used by the electric utility or the end users. In this work the implementation of an end-to-end NILM system is presented, which comprises a custom high frequency meter and neural-network based algorithms. The present article presents a novel way to include high frequency information as input of neural network models by means of multivariate time series that include carefully selected features. Furthermore, it provides a detailed assessment of the generalization error and shows that this class of models generalize well to new instances of seen-in-training appliances. An evaluation database formed of measurements in two Uruguayan homes is collected and discussion on general unsupervised approaches is provided.

Intra-day solar irradiation forecast using RLS filters and satellite images

Satellite-based solar irradiation forecasting is useful for short-term intra-day time horizons, outperforming numerical weather predictions up to 3-4 hours ahead. The main techniques for solar satellite forecast are based on sophisticated cloud motion estimates from geostationary satellite images. This work explores the use of satellite information in a simpler way, namely spatial averages that require almost no preprocessing. Adaptive auto-regressive models are used to assess the impact of this information on the forecasting performance. A complete analysis regarding model selection, the satellite averaging window size and the inclusion of satellite past measurements is provided. It is shown that: (i) satellite spatial averages are useful inputs and the averaging window size is an important parameter, (ii) satellite lags are of limited utility and spatial averages are more useful than weighted time averages, and (iii) there is no value in fine-tuning the orders of auto-regressive models for each time horizon, as the same performance can be obtained by using a fixed well-selected order. These ideas are tested for a region with intermediate solar variability, and the models succeed to outperform a proposed optimal smart persistence, used here as an exigent performance benchmark.
