An Extension of the Bianchi-Egnell Stability Estimate to Bakry, Gentil, and Ledoux's Generalization of the Sobolev Inequality to Continuous Dimensions

This paper extends a stability estimate of the Sobolev Inequality established by G. Bianchi and H. Egnell in their paper "A note on the Sobolev Inequality." Bianchi and Egnell's Stability Estimate answers the question raised by H. Brezis and E. H. Lieb: "Is there a natural way to bound $\| \nabla φ\|_2^2 - C_N^2 \| φ\|_\frac{2N}{N-2}^2$ from below in terms of the 'distance' of $φ$ from the manifold of optimizers in the Sobolev Inequality?" Establishing stability estimates - also known as quantitative versions of sharp inequalities - of other forms of the Sobolev Inequality, as well as other sharp inequalities, is an active topic. In this paper, we extend Bianchi and Egnell's Stability Estimate to a Sobolev Inequality for "continuous dimensions." Bakry, Gentil, and Ledoux have recently proved a sharp extension of the Sobolev Inequality for functions on $\mathbb{R}_+ \times \mathbb{R}^n$, which can be considered as an extension to "continuous dimensions." V. H. Nguyen determined all cases of equality. The present paper extends the Bianchi-Egnell stability analysis for the Sobolev Inequality to this "continuous dimensional" generalization.

Asymptotic flatness of Morrey extremals

We study the limiting behavior as $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ of extremal functions $u$ for Morrey's inequality on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we compute the limit of $u(x)$ as $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ and show $|x||Du(x)|$ tends to $0$. To this end, we exploit the fact that extremals are uniformly bounded and that they each satisfy a PDE of the form $-Δ_pu=c(δ_{x_0}-δ_{y_0})$ for some $c\in \mathbb{R}$ and distinct $x_0,y_0\in \mathbb{R}^n$. More generally, we explain how to quantitatively deduce the asymptotic flatness of bounded $p$-harmonic functions on exterior domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $p>n$.

On the symmetry and monotonicity of Morrey extremals

We employ Clarkson's inequality to deduce that each extremal of Morrey's inequality is axially symmetric and is antisymmetric with respect to reflection about a plane orthogonal to its axis of symmetry. We also use symmetrization methods to show that each extremal is monotone in the distance from its axis of symmetry and in the direction of its axis when restricted to spheres centered at the intersection of its axis and its antisymmetry plane.

A Stability Result for a Family of Sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg Inequalities

In a recent paper, E. Carlen and A. Figalli prove a stability estimate - also known as a quantitative inequality - for a sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and use this result to solve a Keller-Segal Equation. The Gagliardo-Nirenberg Inequality that Carlen and Figalli prove their stability estimate for is part of a larger family of sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, for which the sharp constants and extremals were identified in some cases by Carrillo and Toscani, and then for the remaining cases by Del Pino and Dolbeault. We prove a stability estimate for the entire family of sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities for which Del Pino and Dolbeault calculated the sharp constants and extremals. Establishing stability estimates of inequalities is an active topic. A key piece of our proof is the application of a continuous dimension generalization of the Bianchi-Egnell Stability Estimate proven by the author.
