A parabolic minimal surface in R3 intersects every nonflat properly embedded minimal surface of bounded curvature

We show that the image of a nonconstant conformal harmonic map $\mathbb C\to \mathbb R^3$, not necessarily proper and possibly with branch points, intersects every properly embedded nonflat minimal surface of bounded curvature in $\mathbb R^3$. The same holds if $\mathbb C$ is replaced by any open conformal surface without nonconstant bounded subharmonic functions.

Every smoothly bounded p-convex domain in R^n admits a p-plurisubharmonic defining function

We show that every bounded domain $D$ in $\mathbb R^n$ with smooth $p$-convex boundary for $2\le p < n$ admits a smooth defining function $ρ$ which is $p$-plurisubharmonic on $\overline D$; if in addition $bD$ has no $p$-flat points then $ρ$ can be chosen strongly $p$-plurisubharmonic on $D$. If $bD$ is $2$-convex then for any open connected conformal surface $M$ and conformal harmonic map $f:M\to \overline D$, either $f(M)\subset D$ or $f(M)\subset bD$. In particular, every conformal harmonic map $\mathbb D^*\to D$ from the punctured disc extends to a conformal harmonic map $\mathbb D\to D$.

Flexible domains for minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces

In this paper we introduce and investigate a new notion of flexibility for domains in Euclidean spaces $\mathbb R^n$ for $n\ge 3$ in terms of minimal surfaces which they contain. A domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb R^n$ is said to be flexible if every conformal minimal immersion $U\toΩ$ from a Runge domain $U$ in an open conformal surface $M$ can be approximated uniformly on compacts, with interpolation on any given finite set, by conformal minimal immersion $M\to Ω$. Together with hyperbolicity phenomena considered in recent works, this extends the dichotomy between flexibility and rigidity from complex analysis to minimal surface theory.

Holomorphic Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ and superminimal surfaces in $\mathbb S^4$

We obtain a Runge approximation theorem for holomorphic Legendrian curves and immersions in the complex projective $3$-space $\mathbb{CP}^3$, both from open and compact Riemann surfaces, and we prove that the space of Legendrian immersions from an open Riemann surface into $\mathbb{CP}^3$ is path connected. We also show that holomorphic Legendrian immersions from Riemann surfaces of finite genus and at most countably many ends, none of which are point ends, satisfy the Calabi-Yau property. Coupled with the Runge approximation theorem, we infer that every open Riemann surface embeds into $\mathbb{CP}^3$ as a complete holomorphic Legendrian curve. Under the twistor projection $π:\mathbb{CP}^3\to \mathbb S^4$ onto the $4$-sphere, immersed holomorphic Legendrian curves $M\to \mathbb{CP}^3$ are in bijective correspondence with superminimal immersions $M\to\mathbb S^4$ of positive spin according to a result of Bryant. This gives as corollaries the corresponding results on superminimal surfaces in $\mathbb S^4$. In particular, superminimal immersions into $\mathbb S^4$ satisfy the Runge approximation theorem and the Calabi-Yau property.

Holomorphic Legendrian curves in projectivised cotangent bundles

We study holomorphic Legendrian curves in the standard complex contact structure on the projectivised cotangent bundle $X=\mathbb P(T^*Z)$ of a complex manifold $Z$ of dimension at least $2$. We provide a detailed analysis of Legendrian curves degenerating to vertical curves and obtain several approximation and general position theorems. In particular, we prove that any vertical holomorphic curve $M\to X$ from a compact bordered Riemann surface $M$ can be deformed to a horizontal Legendrian curve by an arbitrarily small deformation. A similar result is proved in the parametric setting, provided that all vertical curves under consideration are nondegenerate. Stronger results are obtained when the base $Z$ is an Oka manifold or a Stein manifold with the density property. Finally, we establish basic and 1-parametric h-principles for holomorphic Legendrian curves in $X$.

Euclidean domains in complex manifolds

In this paper we find big Euclidean domains in complex manifolds. We consider open neighbourhoods of sets of the form $K\cup M$ in a complex manifold $X$, where $K$ is a compact $\mathscr O(U)$-convex set in an open Stein neighbourhood $U$ of $K$, $M$ is an embedded Stein submanifold of $X$, and $K\cap M$ is compact and $\mathscr O(M)$-convex. We prove a Docquier-Grauert type theorem concerning biholomorphic equivalence of neighbourhoods of such sets, and we give sufficient conditions for the existence of Stein neighbourhoods of $K\cup M$, biholomorphic to domains in $\mathbb C^n$ with $n=\dim X$, such that $M$ is mapped onto a closed complex submanifold of $\mathbb C^n$.

Holomorphic families of Fatou-Bieberbach domains and applications to Oka manifolds

We construct holomorphically varying families of Fatou-Bieberbach domains with given centres in the complement of any compact polynomially convex subset $K$ of $\mathbb C^n$ for $n>1$. This provides a simple proof of the recent result of Yuta Kusakabe to the effect that the complement $\mathbb C^n\setminus K$ of any polynomially convex subset $K$ of $\mathbb C^n$ is an Oka manifold. The analogous result is obtained with $\mathbb C^n$ replaced by any Stein manifold with the density property.

The first thirty years of Andersen-Lempert theory

In this paper we expose the impact of the fundamental discovery, made by Erik Andersén and László Lempert in 1992, that the group generated by shears is dense in the group of holomorphic automorphisms of complex Euclidean spaces of dimensions $n>1$. In three decades since its publication, their groundbreaking work led to the discovery of several new phenomena and to major new results in complex analysis and geometry involving Stein manifolds and affine algebraic manifolds with many automorphisms. The aim of this survey is to present some focal points of these developments, with a view towards the future.

Holomorphic approximation: the legacy of Weierstrass, Runge, Oka-Weil, and Mergelyan

In this paper we survey the theory of holomorphic approximation, from the classical 19th century results of Runge and Weierstrass, continuing with the 20th century work of Oka and Weil, Mergelyan, Vitushkin and others, to the most recent ones on higher dimensional manifolds. The paper includes some new results and applications of this theory, especially to manifold-valued maps.

Mergelyan approximation theorem for holomorphic Legendrian curves

In this paper, we prove a Mergelyan type approximation theorem for immersed holomorphic Legendrian curves in an arbitrary complex contact manifold $(X,ξ)$. Explicitly, we show that if $S$ is a compact admissible set in a Riemann surface $M$ and $f:S\to X$ is a $ξ$-Legendrian immersion of class $\mathscr{C}^{r+2}(S,X)$ for some $r\ge 2$ which is holomorphic in the interior of $S$, then $f$ can be approximated in the $\mathscr{C}^r(S,X)$ topology by holomorphic Legendrian embeddings from open neighbourhoods of $S$ into $X$. This result has numerous applications, some of which are indicated in the paper. In particular, by using Bryant's correspondence for the Penrose twistor map $\mathbb{CP}^3\to S^4$ we show that a Mergelyan approximation theorem and the Calabi-Yau property hold for superminimal surfaces in the $4$-sphere $S^4$.

Minimal surfaces in minimally convex domains

In this paper, we prove that every conformal minimal immersion of a compact bordered Riemann surface $M$ into a minimally convex domain $D\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ can be approximated, uniformly on compacts in $\mathring M=M\setminus bM$, by proper complete conformal minimal immersions $\mathring M\to D$. We also obtain a rigidity theorem for complete immersed minimal surfaces of finite total curvature contained in a minimally convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and we characterize the minimal surface hull of a compact set $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$ by sequences of conformal minimal disks whose boundaries converge to $K$ in the measure theoretic sense.

Proper holomorphic immersions into Stein manifolds with the density property

In this paper we prove that every Stein manifold $S$ admits a proper holomorphic immersion into any Stein manifold $X$ of dimension $2\mathrm{dim}S$ enjoying the density property or the volume density property. The case $\mathrm{dim}S=1$ was proved beforehand by Andrist and Wold (Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble), 64(2):681-697, 2014). This result generalizes the classical theorem of Bishop and Narasimhan for immersions to $\mathbb{C}^n$ with $n=2\mathrm{dim}S$, and it complements the proper embedding theorem proved by Andrist et al. when $\mathrm{dim}X>2\mathrm{dim}S$ (J. Anal. Math., 130:135-150, 2016).

Runge tubes in Stein manifolds with the density property

In this paper we give a very simple proof of the existence and plenitude of Runge tubes in $\mathbb C^n$ $(n>1)$ and, more generally, in Stein manifolds with the density property. We show in particular that for any algebraic submanifold $A$ of codimension at least two in a complex Euclidean space $\mathbb C^n$, the normal bundle of $A$ in $\mathbb C^n$ admits a holomorphic embedding onto a Runge domain in $\mathbb C^n$ which agrees with the inclusion map $A\hookrightarrow \mathbb C^n$ on the zero section.

New complex analytic methods in the study of non-orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$

The aim of this work is to adapt the complex analytic methods originating in modern Oka theory to the study of non-orientable conformal minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$. These methods, which we develop essentially from the first principles, enable us to prove that the space of conformal minimal immersions of a given bordered non-orientable surface to $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a real analytic Banach manifold, obtain approximation results of Runge-Mergelyan type for conformal minimal immersions from non-orientable surfaces, and show general position theorems for non-orientable conformal minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also give the first known example of a properly embedded non-orientable minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^4$; a Mobius strip. All our new tools mentioned above apply to non-orientable minimal surfaces endowed with a fixed choice of a conformal structure. This enables us to obtain significant new applications to the global theory of non-orientable minimal surfaces. In particular, we construct proper non-orientable conformal minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with any given conformal structure, complete non-orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with arbitrary conformal type whose generalized Gauss map is nondegenerate and omits $n$ hyperplanes of $\mathbb{CP}^{n-1}$ in general position, complete non-orientable minimal surfaces bounded by Jordan curves, and complete proper non-orientable minimal surfaces normalized by bordered surfaces in $p$-convex domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$.

The parametric h-principle for minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^n$ and null curves in $\mathbb C^n$

Let $M$ be an open Riemann surface. It was proved by Alarcón and Forstnerič (arXiv:1408.5315) that every conformal minimal immersion $M\to\mathbb R^3$ is isotopic to the real part of a holomorphic null curve $M\to\mathbb C^3$. In this paper, we prove the following much stronger result in this direction: for any $n\geq 3$, the inclusion $ι$ of the space of real parts of nonflat null holomorphic immersions $M\to\mathbb C^n$ into the space of nonflat conformal minimal immersions $M\to \mathbb R^n$ satisfies the parametric h-principle with approximation; in particular, it is a weak homotopy equivalence. We prove analogous results for several other related maps, and we describe the homotopy type of the space of all holomorphic immersions $M\to\mathbb C^n$. For an open Riemann surface $M$ of finite topological type, we obtain optimal results by showing that $ι$ and several related maps are inclusions of strong deformation retracts; in particular, they are homotopy equivalences.

Embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$

In this paper, we prove that every confomal minimal immersion of an open Riemann surface into $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\ge 5$ can be approximated uniformly on compacts by conformal minimal embeddings. Furthermore, we show that every open Riemann surface carries a proper conformal minimal embedding into $\mathbb{R}^5$. One of our main tools is a Mergelyan approximation theorem for conformal minimal immersions to $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$ which is also proved in the paper.

Every bordered Riemann surface is a complete conformal minimal surface bounded by Jordan curves

In this paper we find approximate solutions of certain Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems for minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and null holomorphic curves in $\mathbb{C}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$. With this tool in hand we construct complete conformally immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which are normalized by any given bordered Riemann surface and have Jordan boundaries. We also furnish complete conformal proper minimal immersions from any given bordered Riemann surface to any smoothly bounded, strictly convex domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ which extend continuously up to the boundary; for $n\ge 5$ we find embeddings with these properties.

Every conformal minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is isotopic to the real part of a holomorphic null curve

In this paper, we show that for every conformal minimal immersion $u:M\to \mathbb{R}^3$ from an open Riemann surface $M$ to $\mathbb{R}^3$ there exists a smooth isotopy $u_t:M\to\mathbb{R}^3$ $(t\in [0,1])$ of conformal minimal immersions, with $u_0=u$, such that $u_1$ is the real part of a holomorphic null curve $M\to \mathbb{C}^3$ (i.e. $u_1$ has vanishing flux). Furthermore, if $u$ is nonflat then $u_1$ can be chosen to have any prescribed flux and to be complete.

Minimal hulls of compact sets in $\mathbb R^3$

The main result of this paper is a characterization of the minimal surface hull of a compact set $K$ in $\mathbb R^3$ by sequences of conformal minimal discs whose boundaries converge to $K$ in the measure theoretic sense, and also by $2$-dimensional minimal currents which are limits of Green currents supported by conformal minimal discs. Analogous results are obtained for the null hull of a compact subset of $\mathbb C^3$. We also prove a null hull analogue of the Alexander-Stolzenberg-Wermer theorem on polynomial hulls of compact sets of finite linear measure, and a polynomial hull version of classical Bochner's tube theorem.

Noncritical holomorphic functions on Stein spaces

We prove that every reduced Stein space admits a holomorphic function without critical points. Furthermore, any closed discrete subset of such a space is the critical locus of a holomorphic function. We also show that for every complex analytic stratification with nonsingular strata on a reduced Stein space there exists a holomorphic function whose restriction to every stratum is noncritical. These result also provide some information on critical loci of holomorphic functions on desingularizations of Stein spaces. In particular, every 1-convex manifold admits a holomorphic function that is noncritical outside the exceptional variety.

Fatou-Bieberbach domains in $\mathbb C^n\setminus\mathbb R^k$

We construct Fatou-Bieberbach domains in $\mathbb C^n$ for $n>1$ which contain a given compact set $K$ and at the same time avoid a totally real affine subspace $L$ of dimension $<n$, provided that $K\cup L$ is polynomially convex. By using this result, we show that the domain $\mathbb C^n\setminus\mathbb R^k$ for $1\le k<n$ enjoys the Oka property with approximation for maps from any Stein manifold of dimension $<n$.

The Calabi-Yau problem, null curves, and Bryant surfaces

In this paper we prove that every bordered Riemann surface M admits a complete proper null holomorphic embedding into a ball of the complex Euclidean $3$-space $\mathbb{C}^3$. The real part of such an embedding is a complete conformal minimal immersion $M\to \mathbb{R}^3$ with bounded image. For any such $M$ we also construct proper null holomorphic embeddings $M\to \mathbb{C}^3$ with a bounded coordinate function; these give rise to properly embedded null curves $M\to SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ and to properly immersed Bryant surfaces $M\to \mathbb{H}^3$ in the hyperbolic $3$-space. In particular, we give the first examples of proper Bryant surfaces with finite topology and of hyperbolic conformal type. The main novelty when compared to the existing results in the literature is that we work with a fixed conformal structure on $M$. This is accomplished by introducing a conceptually new method based on complex analytic techniques. One of our main tools is an approximate solution to the Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problem for null curves in $\mathbb{C}^3$.

Holomorphic flexibility properties of compact complex surfaces

We introduce the notion of a stratified Oka manifold and prove that such a manifold $X$ is strongly dominable in the sense that for every $x\in X$, there is a holomorphic map $f:\C^n\to X$, $n=\dim X$, such that $f(0)=x$ and $f$ is a local biholomorphism at 0. We deduce that every Kummer surface is strongly dominable. We determine which minimal compact complex surfaces of class VII are Oka, assuming the global spherical shell conjecture. We deduce that the Oka property and several weaker holomorphic flexibility properties are in general not closed in families of compact complex manifolds. Finally, we consider the behaviour of the Oka property under blowing up and blowing down.

Null curves and directed immersions of open Riemann surfaces

In this paper we study holomorphic immersions of open Riemann surfaces into C^n whose derivative lies in a conical algebraic subvariety A of C^n that is smooth away from the origin. Classical examples of such A-immersions include null curves in C^3 which are closely related to minimal surfaces in R^3, and null curves in SL_2(C) that are related to Bryant surfaces. We establish a basic structure theorem for the set of all A-immersions of a bordered Riemann surface, and we prove several approximation and desingularization theorems. Assuming that A is irreducible and is not contained in any hyperplane, we show that every A-immersion can be approximated by A-embeddings; this holds in particular for null curves in C^3. If in addition A-{0} is an Oka manifold, then A-immersions are shown to satisfy the Oka principle, including the Runge and the Mergelyan approximation theorems. Another version of the Oka principle holds when A admits a smooth Oka hyperplane section. This lets us prove in particular that every open Riemann surface is biholomorphic to a properly embedded null curve in C^3.

Oka manifolds: From Oka to Stein and back

Oka theory has its roots in the classical Oka-Grauert principle whose main result is Grauert's classification of principal holomorphic fiber bundles over Stein spaces. Modern Oka theory concerns holomorphic maps from Stein manifolds and Stein spaces to Oka manifolds. It has emerged as a subfield of complex geometry in its own right since the appearance of a seminal paper of M. Gromov in 1989. In this expository paper we discuss Oka manifolds and Oka maps. We describe equivalent characterizations of Oka manifolds, the functorial properties of this class, and geometric sufficient conditions for being Oka, the most important of which is Gromov's ellipticity. We survey the current status of the theory in terms of known examples of Oka manifolds, mention open problems and outline the proofs of the main results. In the appendix by F. Larusson it is explained how Oka manifolds and Oka maps, along with Stein manifolds, fit into an abstract homotopy-theoretic framework. The article is an expanded version of the lectures given by the author at the Winter School KAWA-4 in Toulouse, France, in January 2013. A more comprehensive exposition of Oka theory is available in the monograph F. Forstneric, Stein Manifolds and Holomorphic Mappings (The Homotopy Principle in Complex Analysis), Ergebnisse der Mathematik und ihrer Grenzgebiete, 3. Folge, 56, Springer-Verlag, Berlin-Heidelberg (2011).

Gunning-Narasimhan's theorem with a growth condition

Given a compact Riemann surface X and a point x_0 in X, we construct a holomorphic function without critical points on the punctured Riemann surface R = X - x_0 which is of finite order at the point x_0. This complements the result of Gunning and Narasimhan from 1967 who constructed a noncritical holomorphic function on every open Riemann surface, but without imposing any growth condition. On the other hand, if the genus of X is at least one, then we show that every algebraic function on R admits a critical point. Our proof also shows that every cohomology class in H^1(X;C) is represented as a de Rham class by a nowhere vanishing holomorphic one-form of finite order on the punctured surface X-x_0.

Disc functionals and Siciak-Zaharyuta extremal functions on singular varieties

We establish plurisubharmonicity of envelopes of certain classical disc functionals on locally irreducible complex spaces, thereby generalizing the corresponding results for complex manifolds. We also find new formulae expressing the Siciak-Zaharyuta extremal function of an open set in a locally irreducible affine algebraic variety as the envelope of certain disc functionals, similarly to what has been done for open sets in C^n by Lempert and by Larusson and Sigurdsson.

Strongly pseudoconvex domains as subvarieties of complex manifolds

In this paper (a sequel to B. Drinovec Drnovsek and F. Forstneric, Holomorphic curves in complex spaces, Duke Math. J. 139 (2007), 203-253) we obtain existence and approximation results for closed complex subvarieties that are normalized by strongly pseudoconvex Stein domains. Our sufficient condition for the existence of such subvarieties in a complex manifold is expressed in terms of the Morse indices and the number of positive Levi eigenvalues of an exhaustion function on the manifold. Examples show that our condition cannot be weakened in general. Optimal results are obtained for subvarieties of this type in complements of compact complex submanifolds with Griffiths positive normal bundle; in the projective case these results generalize classical theorems of Remmert, Bishop and Narasimhan concerning proper holomorphic maps and embeddings to complex Euclidean spaces.

Survey of Oka theory

Oka theory has its roots in the classical Oka principle in complex analysis. It has emerged as a subfield of complex geometry in its own right since the appearance of a seminal paper of M. Gromov in 1989. Following a brief review of Stein manifolds, we discuss the recently introduced category of Oka manifolds and Oka maps. We consider geometric sufficient conditions for being Oka, the most important of which is ellipticity, introduced by Gromov. We explain how Oka manifolds and maps naturally fit into an abstract homotopy-theoretic framework. We describe recent applications and some key open problems. This article is a much expanded version of the lecture given by the first-named author at the conference RAFROT 2010 in Rincon, Puerto Rico, on March 22, 2010, and of a brief survey article by the second-named author in Notices Amer. Math. Soc., January 2010.

Invariance of the parametric Oka property

Assume that E and B are complex manifolds and that pi is a holomorphic Serre fibration from E onto E such that E admits a finite dominating family of holomorphic fiber-sprays over a small neighborhood of any point in B. We show that the parametric Oka property (POP) of B implies POP of E; conversely, POP of E implies POP of B for contractible parameter spaces. This follows from a parametric Oka principle for holomorphic liftings which we establish in the paper.

Oka manifolds

We give the following positive answer to Gromov's question (in "Oka's principle for holomorphic sections of elliptic bundles", J. Amer. Math. Soc. 2, 851-897 (1989), 3.4.(D), page 881). THEOREM: If every holomorphic map from a compact convex set in a complex Euclidean space C^n to a certain complex manifold Y is a uniform limit of entire maps of C^n to Y, then Y enjoys the parametric Oka property. In particular, for any reduced Stein space X the inclusion of the space of holomorphic maps of X to Y into the space of continuous maps is a weak homotopy equivalence. This shows that all Oka type properties of a complex manifold are equivalent to each other. (See also the articles F. Forstneric, "Runge approximation on convex sets implies Oka's property", Ann. Math. (2), 163, 689-707 (2006); "Extending holomorphic mappings from subvarieties in Stein manifolds", Ann. Inst. Fourier 55, 733-751 (2005).)

Oka maps

Given a holomorphic submersion of reduced complex spaces, we prove that the basic Oka property of the submersion implies the parametric Oka property. This generalizes the corresponding result for complex manifolds (F. Forstneric, Oka Manifolds, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I, 347 (2009) 1017-1020). It follows that a stratified elliptic (or subelliptic) holomorphic submersion, or a stratified holomorphic fiber bundle whose fibers are Oka manifolds, enjoys the parametric Oka property. As an application we give a parametric version of the factorization theorem due to Ivarsson and Kutzschebauch (A solution of Gromov's Vaserstein problem, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 346 (2008) 1239-1243) for holomorphic maps from finite dimensional reduced Stein spaces to the special linear group SL_n(C).

The Oka principle for sections of stratified fiber bundles

A complex manifold Y satisfies the Convex Approximation Property (CAP) if every holomorphic map from a neighborhood of a compact convex set K in a complex Euclidean space C^n to Y can be approximated, uniformly on K, by entire maps from C^n to Y. If X is a reduced Stein space and Z is a stratified holomorphic fiber bundle over X all of whose fibers satisfy CAP, then sections of Z over X enjoy the Oka property with (jet) interpolation and approximation. Previously this has been proved by the author in the case when X is a Stein manifold without singularities (Ann. Math., 163 (2006), 689-707, math.CV/0402278; Ann. Inst. Fourier, 55 (2005), 733-751, math.CV/0411048). We also give existence results for holomorphic sections under certain connectivity hypothesis on the fibers. In the final part of the paper we obtain the Oka property for sections of submersions with stratified sprays over Stein spaces.

Solving the $d$ and $\bar\partial$-equation in thin tubes and applications to mappings

We construct a family of integral kernels for solving the \bar\partial equation with C^k and Holder estimates in thin tubes around totally real submanifolds in complex Eulidean spaces (theorems 1.1 and 3.1). Combining this with the proof of a theorem of Serre we solve the d-equation with estimates for holomorphic forms in such tubes (theorem 5.1). We apply these techniques and a method of Moser to approximate C^k-diffeomorphisms between totally real submanifolds in C^n in the C^k-topology by biholomorphic mappings in tubes, by unimodular and symplectic biholomorphic mappings, and by holomorphic automorphisms of C^n.

A Carleman type theorem for proper holomorphic embeddings

In 1927, Carleman showed that a continuous, complex-valued function on the real line can be approximated in the Whitney topology by an entire function restricted to the real line. In this paper, we prove a similar result for proper holomorphic embeddings. Namely, we show that a proper $\cC^r$ embedding of the real line into $\C^n$ can be approximated in the strong $\cC^r$ topology by a proper holomorphic embedding of $\C$ into $\C^n$.
