Holomorphic Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ and superminimal surfaces in $\mathbb S^4$

We obtain a Runge approximation theorem for holomorphic Legendrian curves and immersions in the complex projective $3$-space $\mathbb{CP}^3$, both from open and compact Riemann surfaces, and we prove that the space of Legendrian immersions from an open Riemann surface into $\mathbb{CP}^3$ is path connected. We also show that holomorphic Legendrian immersions from Riemann surfaces of finite genus and at most countably many ends, none of which are point ends, satisfy the Calabi-Yau property. Coupled with the Runge approximation theorem, we infer that every open Riemann surface embeds into $\mathbb{CP}^3$ as a complete holomorphic Legendrian curve. Under the twistor projection $π:\mathbb{CP}^3\to \mathbb S^4$ onto the $4$-sphere, immersed holomorphic Legendrian curves $M\to \mathbb{CP}^3$ are in bijective correspondence with superminimal immersions $M\to\mathbb S^4$ of positive spin according to a result of Bryant. This gives as corollaries the corresponding results on superminimal surfaces in $\mathbb S^4$. In particular, superminimal immersions into $\mathbb S^4$ satisfy the Runge approximation theorem and the Calabi-Yau property.

The space of Gauss maps of complete minimal surfaces

The Gauss map of a conformal minimal immersion of an open Riemann surface $M$ into $\mathbb R^3$ is a meromorphic function on $M$. In this paper, we prove that the Gauss map assignment, taking a full conformal minimal immersion $M\to\mathbb R^3$ to its Gauss map, is a Serre fibration. We then determine the homotopy type of the space of meromorphic functions on $M$ that are the Gauss map of a complete full conformal minimal immersion, and show that it is the same as the homotopy type of the space of all continuous maps from $M$ to the 2-sphere. We obtain analogous results for the generalised Gauss map of conformal minimal immersions $M\to\mathbb R^n$ for arbitrary $n\geq 3$.

Complete complex hypersurfaces in the ball come in foliations

In this paper we prove that every smooth complete closed complex hypersurface in the open unit ball $\mathbb{B}_n$ of $\mathbb{C}^n$ $(n\ge 2)$ is a level set of a noncritical holomorphic function on $\mathbb{B}_n$ all of whose level sets are complete. This shows that $\mathbb{B}_n$ admits a nonsingular holomorphic foliation by smooth complete closed complex hypersurfaces and, what is the main point, that every hypersurface in $\mathbb{B}_n$ of this type can be embedded into such a foliation. We establish a more general result in which neither completeness nor smoothness of the given hypersurface is required. Furthermore, we obtain a similar result for complex submanifolds of arbitrary positive codimension and prove the existence of a nonsingular holomorphic submersion foliation of $\mathbb{B}_n$ by smooth complete closed complex submanifolds of any pure codimension $q\in\{1,\ldots,n-1\}$.

Minimal surfaces in minimally convex domains

In this paper, we prove that every conformal minimal immersion of a compact bordered Riemann surface $M$ into a minimally convex domain $D\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ can be approximated, uniformly on compacts in $\mathring M=M\setminus bM$, by proper complete conformal minimal immersions $\mathring M\to D$. We also obtain a rigidity theorem for complete immersed minimal surfaces of finite total curvature contained in a minimally convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and we characterize the minimal surface hull of a compact set $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$ by sequences of conformal minimal disks whose boundaries converge to $K$ in the measure theoretic sense.

New complex analytic methods in the study of non-orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$

The aim of this work is to adapt the complex analytic methods originating in modern Oka theory to the study of non-orientable conformal minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$. These methods, which we develop essentially from the first principles, enable us to prove that the space of conformal minimal immersions of a given bordered non-orientable surface to $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a real analytic Banach manifold, obtain approximation results of Runge-Mergelyan type for conformal minimal immersions from non-orientable surfaces, and show general position theorems for non-orientable conformal minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also give the first known example of a properly embedded non-orientable minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^4$; a Mobius strip. All our new tools mentioned above apply to non-orientable minimal surfaces endowed with a fixed choice of a conformal structure. This enables us to obtain significant new applications to the global theory of non-orientable minimal surfaces. In particular, we construct proper non-orientable conformal minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with any given conformal structure, complete non-orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with arbitrary conformal type whose generalized Gauss map is nondegenerate and omits $n$ hyperplanes of $\mathbb{CP}^{n-1}$ in general position, complete non-orientable minimal surfaces bounded by Jordan curves, and complete proper non-orientable minimal surfaces normalized by bordered surfaces in $p$-convex domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$.

A construction of complete complex hypersurfaces in the ball with control on the topology

Given a closed complex hypersurface $Z\subset \mathbb{C}^{N+1}$ $(N\in\mathbb{N})$ and a compact subset $K\subset Z$, we prove the existence of a pseudoconvex Runge domain $D$ in $Z$ such that $K\subset D$ and there is a complete proper holomorphic embedding from $D$ into the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^{N+1}$. For $N=1$, we derive the existence of complete properly embedded complex curves in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^2$, with arbitrarily prescribed finite topology. In particular, there exist complete proper holomorphic embeddings of the unit disc $\mathbb{D}\subset \mathbb{C}$ into the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^2$. These are the first known examples of complete bounded embedded complex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^{N+1}$ with any control on the topology.

Proper holomorphic Legendrian curves in $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$

In this paper we prove that every open Riemann surface properly embeds in the Special Linear group $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ as a holomorphic Legendrian curve, where $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ is endowed with its standard contact structure. As a consequence, we derive the existence of proper, weakly complete, flat fronts in the real hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ with arbitrary complex structure.

Embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$

In this paper, we prove that every confomal minimal immersion of an open Riemann surface into $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\ge 5$ can be approximated uniformly on compacts by conformal minimal embeddings. Furthermore, we show that every open Riemann surface carries a proper conformal minimal embedding into $\mathbb{R}^5$. One of our main tools is a Mergelyan approximation theorem for conformal minimal immersions to $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$ which is also proved in the paper.

Every bordered Riemann surface is a complete conformal minimal surface bounded by Jordan curves

In this paper we find approximate solutions of certain Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems for minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and null holomorphic curves in $\mathbb{C}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$. With this tool in hand we construct complete conformally immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which are normalized by any given bordered Riemann surface and have Jordan boundaries. We also furnish complete conformal proper minimal immersions from any given bordered Riemann surface to any smoothly bounded, strictly convex domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ which extend continuously up to the boundary; for $n\ge 5$ we find embeddings with these properties.

Every conformal minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is isotopic to the real part of a holomorphic null curve

In this paper, we show that for every conformal minimal immersion $u:M\to \mathbb{R}^3$ from an open Riemann surface $M$ to $\mathbb{R}^3$ there exists a smooth isotopy $u_t:M\to\mathbb{R}^3$ $(t\in [0,1])$ of conformal minimal immersions, with $u_0=u$, such that $u_1$ is the real part of a holomorphic null curve $M\to \mathbb{C}^3$ (i.e. $u_1$ has vanishing flux). Furthermore, if $u$ is nonflat then $u_1$ can be chosen to have any prescribed flux and to be complete.

The Calabi-Yau problem, null curves, and Bryant surfaces

In this paper we prove that every bordered Riemann surface M admits a complete proper null holomorphic embedding into a ball of the complex Euclidean $3$-space $\mathbb{C}^3$. The real part of such an embedding is a complete conformal minimal immersion $M\to \mathbb{R}^3$ with bounded image. For any such $M$ we also construct proper null holomorphic embeddings $M\to \mathbb{C}^3$ with a bounded coordinate function; these give rise to properly embedded null curves $M\to SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ and to properly immersed Bryant surfaces $M\to \mathbb{H}^3$ in the hyperbolic $3$-space. In particular, we give the first examples of proper Bryant surfaces with finite topology and of hyperbolic conformal type. The main novelty when compared to the existing results in the literature is that we work with a fixed conformal structure on $M$. This is accomplished by introducing a conceptually new method based on complex analytic techniques. One of our main tools is an approximate solution to the Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problem for null curves in $\mathbb{C}^3$.

Approximation theory for non-orientable minimal surfaces and applications

We prove a version of the classical Runge and Mergelyan uniform approximation theorems for non-orientable minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space R3. Then, we obtain some geometric applications. Among them, we emphasize the following ones: 1. A Gunning-Narasimhan type theorem for non-orientable conformal surfaces. 2. An existence theorem for non-orientable minimal surfaces in R3, with arbitrary conformal structure, properly projecting into a plane. 3. An existence result for non-orientable minimal surfaces in R3 with arbitrary conformal structure and Gauss map omitting one projective direction.

Null curves and directed immersions of open Riemann surfaces

In this paper we study holomorphic immersions of open Riemann surfaces into C^n whose derivative lies in a conical algebraic subvariety A of C^n that is smooth away from the origin. Classical examples of such A-immersions include null curves in C^3 which are closely related to minimal surfaces in R^3, and null curves in SL_2(C) that are related to Bryant surfaces. We establish a basic structure theorem for the set of all A-immersions of a bordered Riemann surface, and we prove several approximation and desingularization theorems. Assuming that A is irreducible and is not contained in any hyperplane, we show that every A-immersion can be approximated by A-embeddings; this holds in particular for null curves in C^3. If in addition A-{0} is an Oka manifold, then A-immersions are shown to satisfy the Oka principle, including the Runge and the Mergelyan approximation theorems. Another version of the Oka principle holds when A admits a smooth Oka hyperplane section. This lets us prove in particular that every open Riemann surface is biholomorphic to a properly embedded null curve in C^3.

The Minkowski problem, new constant curvature surfaces in R^3, and some applications

Let $m\in\mathbb{N},$ $m\geq 2,$ and let $\{p_j\}_{j=1}^m$ be a finite subset of $\mathbb{S}^2$ such that $0\in\mathbb{R}^3$ lies in its positive convex hull. In this paper we make use of the classical Minkowski problem, to show the complete family of smooth convex bodies $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose boundary surface consists of an open surface $S$ with constant Gauss curvature (respectively, constant mean curvature) and $m$ planar compact discs $\bar{D_1},...,\bar{D_m},$ such that the Gauss map of $S$ is a homeomorphism onto $\mathbb{S}^2-\{p_j\}_{j=1}^m$ and $D_j\bot p_j,$ for all $j.$ We derive applications to the generalized Minkowski problem, existence of harmonic diffeomorphisms between domains of $\mathbb{S}^2,$ existence of capillary surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3,$ and a Hessian equation of Monge-Ampere type.

Minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ properly projecting into $\mathbb{R}^2$

For all open Riemann surface M and real number $θ\in (0,π/4),$ we construct a conformal minimal immersion $X=(X_1,X_2,X_3):M \to \mathbb{R}^3$ such that $X_3+\tan(θ) |X_1|:M \to \mathbb{R}$ is positive and proper. Furthermore, $X$ can be chosen with arbitrarily prescribed flux map. Moreover, we produce properly immersed hyperbolic minimal surfaces with non empty boundary in $\mathbb{R}^3$ lying above a negative sublinear graph.

Null Curves in $\mathbb{C}^3$ and Calabi-Yau Conjectures

For any open orientable surface $M$ and convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^3,$ there exists a Riemann surface $N$ homeomorphic to $M$ and a complete proper null curve $F:N\toΩ.$ This result follows from a general existence theorem with many applications. Among them, the followings: For any convex domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$ there exist a Riemann surface $N$ homeomorphic to $M$ and a complete proper holomorphic immersion $F:N\toΩ.$ Furthermore, if $D \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is a convex domain and $Ω$ is the solid right cylinder $\{x \in \mathbb{C}^2 | {Re}(x) \in D\},$ then $F$ can be chosen so that ${\rm Re}(F):N\to D$ is proper. There exists a Riemann surface $N$ homeomorphic to $M$ and a complete bounded holomorphic null immersion $F:N \to {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{C}).$ There exists a complete bounded CMC-1 immersion $X:M \to \mathbb{H}^3.$ For any convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ there exists a complete proper minimal immersion $(X_j)_{j=1,2,3}:M \to Ω$ with vanishing flux. Furthermore, if $D \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is a convex domain and $Ω=\{(x_j)_{j=1,2,3} \in \mathbb{R}^3 | (x_1,x_2) \in D\},$ then $X$ can be chosen so that $(X_1,X_2):M\to D$ is proper. Any of the above surfaces can be chosen with hyperbolic conformal structure.

Properness of associated minimal surfaces

We prove that for any open Riemann surface $N$ and finite subset $Z\subset \mathbb{S}^1=\{z\in\mathbb{C}\,|\;|z|=1\},$ there exist an infinite closed set $Z_N \subset \mathbb{S}^1$ containing $Z$ and a null holomorphic curve $F=(F_j)_{j=1,2,3}:N\to\mathbb{C}^3$ such that the map $Y:Z_N\times N\to \mathbb{R}^2,$ $Y(v,P)=Re(v(F_1,F_2)(P)),$ is proper. In particular, $Re(vF):N \to\mathbb{R}^3$ is a proper conformal minimal immersion properly projecting into $\mathbb{R}^2=\mathbb{R}^2\times\{0\}\subset\mathbb{R}^3,$ for all $v \in Z_N.$

Compact complete null curves in Complex 3-space

We prove that for any open orientable surface $S$ of finite topology, there exist a Riemann surface $\mathcal{M},$ a relatively compact domain $M\subset\mathcal{M}$ and a continuous map $X:\bar{M}\to\mathbb{C}^3$ such that: $\mathcal{M}$ and $M$ are homeomorphic to $S,$ $\mathcal{M}-M$ and $\mathcal{M}-\bar{M}$ contain no relatively compact components in $\mathcal{M},$ $X|_M$ is a complete null holomorphic curve, $X|_{\bar{M}-M}:\bar{M}-M\to\mathbb{C}^3$ is an embedding and the Hausdorff dimension of $X(\bar{M}-M)$ is $1.$ Moreover, for any $ε>0$ and compact null holomorphic curve $Y:N\to\mathbb{C}^3$ with non-empty boundary $Y(\partial N),$ there exist Riemann surfaces $M$ and $\mathcal{M}$ homeomorphic to $N^\circ$ and a map $X:\bar{M}\to\mathbb{C}^3$ in the above conditions such that $δ^H(Y(\partial N),X(\bar{M}-M))<ε,$ where $δ^H(\cdot,\cdot)$ means Hausdorff distance in $\mathbb{C}^3.$

Harmonic diffeomorphisms between domains in the Euclidean 2-sphere

We study the existence or not of harmonic diffeomorphisms between certain domains in the Euclidean 2-sphere. In particular, we show harmonic diffeomorphisms from circular domains in the complex plane onto finitely punctured spheres, with at least two punctures. This result follows from a general existence theorem for maximal graphs in the Lorentzian product $M\times\mathbb{R}_1,$ where $M$ is an arbitrary $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold, $n\geq 2.$ In contrast, we show that there is no harmonic diffeomorphism from the unit complex disc onto the once punctured sphere and no harmonic diffeomeorphisms from finitely punctured spheres onto circular domains in the Euclidean 2-sphere.

In particular, any open orientable surface admits a complex structure properly holomorphically embedding into $\mathbb{C}^2.$

Harmonic mappings and conformal minimal immersions of Riemann surfaces into $\mathbb{R}^n$

We prove that for any open Riemann surface $N,$ natural number $n\geq 3,$ non-constant harmonic map $h:N\to \mathbb{R}^{n-2}$ and holomorphic 2-form $H$ on $N,$ there exists a weakly complete harmonic map $X=(X_j)_{j=1,\ldots,n}:N \to \mathbb{R}^n$ with Hopf differential $H$ and $(X_j)_{j=3,\ldots,n}=h.$ In particular, there exists a complete conformal minimal immersion $Y=(Y_j)_{j=1,\ldots,n}:N \to \mathbb{R}^n$ such that $(Y_j)_{j=3,\ldots,n}=h.$ As a consequence of these results, complete full non-decomposable minimal surfaces with arbitrary conformal structure and whose generalized Gauss map is non-degenerate and fails to intersect $n$ hyperplanes of $\mathbb{CP}^{n-1}$ in general position are constructed. Moreover, complete non-proper embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n,$ $\forall n>3,$ are exhibited.
