A combinatorial proof of a sumset conjecture of Furstenberg

We give a new proof of a sumset conjecture of Furstenberg that was first proved by Hochman and Shmerkin in 2012: if log⁡r/log⁡s\log r / \log s is irrational and XX and YY are ×r\times r- and ×s\times s-invariant subsets of [0,1][0,1], respectively, then dim⁡H(X+Y)=min⁡(1,dim⁡HX+dim⁡HY)\dim_\text{H} (X+Y) = \min ( 1, \dim_\text{H} X + \dim_\text{H} Y). Our main result yields information on the size of the sumset λX+ηYλX + ηY uniformly across a compact set of parameters at fixed scales. The proof is combinatorial and avoids the machinery of local entropy averages and CP-processes, relying instead on a quantitative, discrete Marstrand projection theorem and a subtree regularity theorem that may be of independent interest.

A new elementary proof of the Prime Number Theorem

Let Ω(n)Ω(n) denote the number of prime factors of nn. We show that for any bounded f ⁣:N→Cf\colon\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C} one has 1N∑n=1N f(Ω(n)+1)=1N∑n=1N f(Ω(n))+oN→∞(1). \frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N\, f(Ω(n)+1)=\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N\, f(Ω(n))+\mathrm{o}_{N\to\infty}(1). This yields a new elementary proof of the Prime Number Theorem.

Single and multiple recurrence along non-polynomial sequences

We establish new recurrence and multiple recurrence results for a rather large family F\mathcal{F} of non-polynomial functions which includes tempered functions defined in [11], as well as functions from a Hardy field with the property that for some ℓ∈N∪{0}\ell\in \mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}, lim⁡x→∞f(ℓ)(x)=±∞\lim_{x\to\infty }f^{(\ell)}(x)=\pm\infty and lim⁡x→∞f(ℓ+1)(x)=0\lim_{x\to\infty }f^{(\ell+1)}(x)=0. Among other things, we show that for any f∈Ff\in\mathcal{F}, any invertible probability measure preserving system (X,B,μ,T)(X,\mathcal{B},μ,T), any A∈BA\in\mathcal{B} with μ(A)>0μ(A)>0, and any ε>0ε>0, the sets of returns Rε,A={n∈N:μ(A∩T−⌊f(n)⌋A)>μ2(A)−ε} R_{ε, A}= \big\{n\in\mathbb{N}:μ(A\cap T^{-\lfloor f(n)\rfloor}A)>μ^2(A)-ε\big\} and RA(k)={n∈N:μ(A∩T⌊f(n)⌋A∩T⌊f(n+1)⌋A∩⋯∩T⌊f(n+k)⌋A)>0} R^{(k)}_{A}= \big\{ n\in\mathbb{N}: μ\big(A\cap T^{\lfloor f(n)\rfloor}A\cap T^{\lfloor f(n+1)\rfloor}A\cap\cdots\cap T^{\lfloor f(n+k)\rfloor}A\big)>0\big\} possess somewhat unexpected properties of largeness; in particular, they are thick, i.e., contain arbitrarily long intervals.

Structure of multicorrelation sequences with integer part polynomial iterates along primes

Let TT be a measure preserving Zℓ\mathbb{Z}^\ell-action on the probability space (X,B,μ),(X,{\mathcal B},μ), q1,…,qm:R→Rℓq_1,\dots,q_m:{\mathbb R}\to{\mathbb R}^\ell vector polynomials, and f0,…,fm∈L∞(X)f_0,\dots,f_m\in L^\infty(X). For any ε>0ε> 0 and multicorrelation sequences of the form α(n)=∫Xf0⋅T⌊q1(n)⌋f1⋯T⌊qm(n)⌋fm  dμ\displaystyleα(n)=\int_Xf_0\cdot T^{ \lfloor q_1(n) \rfloor }f_1\cdots T^{ \lfloor q_m(n) \rfloor }f_m\;dμ we show that there exists a nilsequence ψψ for which lim⁡N−M→∞1N−M∑n=MN−1∣α(n)−ψ(n)∣≤ε\displaystyle\lim_{N - M \to \infty} \frac{1}{N-M} \sum_{n=M}^{N-1} |α(n) - ψ(n)| \leq ε and lim⁡N→∞1π(N)∑p∈P∩[1,N]∣α(p)−ψ(p)∣≤ε.\displaystyle\lim_{N \to \infty} \frac{1}{π(N)} \sum_{p \in {\mathbb P}\cap[1,N]} |α(p) - ψ(p)| \leq ε. This result simultaneously generalizes previous results of Frantzikinakis [2] and the authors [11,13].

A structure theorem for level sets of multiplicative functions and applications

Given a level set EE of an arbitrary multiplicative function ff, we establish, by building on the fundamental work of Frantzikinakis and Host [13,14], a structure theorem which gives a decomposition of 1E\mathbb{1}_E into an almost periodic and a pseudo-random parts. Using this structure theorem together with the technique developed by the authors in [3], we obtain the following result pertaining to polynomial multiple recurrence. Let E={n1<n2<…}E=\{n_1<n_2<\ldots\} be a level set of an arbitrary multiplicative function with positive density. Then the following are equivalent: - EE is divisible, i.e. the upper density of the set E∩uNE\cap u\mathbb{N} is positive for all u∈Nu\in\mathbb{N}; - EE is an averaging set of polynomial multiple recurrence, i.e. for all measure preserving systems (X,B,μ,T)(X,\mathcal{B},μ,T), all A∈BA\in\mathcal{B} with μ(A)>0μ(A)>0, all ℓ≥1\ell\geq 1 and all polynomials pi∈Z[x]p_i\in\mathbb{Z}[x], i=1,…,ℓi=1,\ldots,\ell, with pi(0)=0p_i(0)=0 we have lim⁡N→∞1N∑j=1Nμ(A∩T−p1(nj)A∩…∩T−pℓ(nj)A)>0. \lim_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N}\sum_{j=1}^N μ\big(A\cap T^{-p_1(n_j)}A\cap\ldots\cap T^{-p_\ell(n_j)}A\big)>0. We also show that if a level set EE of a multiplicative function has positive upper density, then any self-shift E−rE-r, r∈Er\in E, is a set of averaging polynomial multiple recurrence. This in turn leads to the following refinement of the polynomial Szemerédi theorem (cf. [4]). Let EE be a level set of an arbitrary multiplicative function, suppose EE has positive upper density and let r∈Er\in E. Then for any set D⊂ND\subset \mathbb{N} with positive upper density and any polynomials pi∈Q[t]p_i\in\mathbb{Q}[t], i=1,…,ℓi=1,\ldots,\ell, which satisfy pi(Z)⊂Zp_i(\mathbb{Z})\subset\mathbb{Z} and pi(0)=0p_i(0)=0 for all i∈{1,…,ℓ}i\in\{1,\ldots,\ell\}, there exists β>0β>0 such that the set { n∈E−r:d‾(D∩(D−p1(n))∩…∩(D−pℓ(n)))>β } \left\{\,n\in E-r:\overline{d}\Big(D\cap (D-p_1(n))\cap \ldots\cap(D-p_\ell(n)) \Big)>β\,\right\} has positive lower density.

Rationally almost periodic sequences, polynomial multiple recurrence and symbolic dynamics

A set R⊂NR\subset \mathbb{N} is called rational if it is well-approximable by finite unions of arithmetic progressions. Examples of rational sets include many classical sets of number-theoretical origin such as the set of squarefree numbers, the set of abundant numbers, or sets of the form Φx:={n∈N:φ(n)n<x}Φ_x:=\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \frac{\boldsymbolφ(n)}{n}<x\}, where x∈[0,1]x\in[0,1] and φ\boldsymbolφ is Euler's totient function. We investigate the combinatorial and dynamical properties of rational sets and obtain new results in ergodic Ramsey theory. We show that if RR is a rational set with d‾(R)>0\overline{d}(R)>0, then the following are equivalent: (a) RR is divisible, i.e. d‾(R∩uN)>0\overline{d}(R\cap u \mathbb{N})>0 for all u∈Nu\in\mathbb{N}. (b) RR is an averaging set of polynomial single recurrence. (c) RR is an averaging set of polynomial multiple recurrence. As an application, we show that if RR is rational and divisible, then for any set E⊂NE\subset\mathbb{N} with d‾(E)>0\overline{d}(E)>0 and any polynomials pi∈Q[t]p_i\in\mathbb{Q}[t],i=1,…,ℓi=1,\ldots,\ell, which satisfy pi(Z)⊂Zp_i(\mathbb{Z})\subset\mathbb{Z} and pi(0)=0p_i(0)=0 for all i∈{1,…,ℓ}i\in\{1,\ldots,\ell\}, there exists β>0β>0 such that the set {n∈R:d‾(E∩(E−p1(n))∩…∩(E−pℓ(n)))>β}\{n\in R:\overline{d}( E\cap (E-p_1(n))\cap\ldots\cap(E-p_\ell(n)))>β\} has positive lower density. Ramsey-theoretical applications naturally lead to problems in symbolic dynamics, which involve rationally almost periodic sequences. We prove that if A\mathcal{A} is a finite alphabet, η∈ANη\in\mathcal{A}^\mathbb{N} is rationally almost periodic, SS denotes the left-shift on AZ\mathcal{A}^\mathbb{Z} and X:={y∈AZ:each finite word appearing in y appears in η},X:=\{y\in \mathcal{A}^\mathbb{Z} : \text{each finite word appearing in $y$ appears in }η\}, then ηη is a generic point for an SS-invariant probability measure νν on XX such that (X,ν,S)(X,ν,S) is ergodic and has rational discrete spectrum.
