Dephasing-rephasing dynamics of one-dimensional tunneling quasicondensates

We study the quantum tunneling of two one-dimensional quasi-condensates made of alkali-metal atoms, considering two different tunneling configurations: side-by-side and head-to-tail. After deriving the quasiparticle excitation spectrum, we discuss the dynamics of the relative phase following a sudden coupling of the independent subsystems. In particular, we calculate the coherence factor of the system, which, due to the nonzero tunneling amplitude, it exhibits dephasing-rephasing oscillations instead of pure dephasing. These oscillations are enhanced by a higher tunneling energy, and by higher system densities. Our predictions provide a benchmark for future experiments at temperatures below $T \lesssim 5 \, \mbox{nK}$.

Quenched dynamics of the momentum distribution of the unitary Bose gas

We study the quenched dynamics of the momentum distribution of a unitary Bose gas under isotropic harmonic confinement within a time-dependent density functional approach based on our recently calculated Monte Carlo (MC) bulk equation of state. In our calculations the inter-atomic s-wave scattering length of the trapped bosons is suddenly increased to a very large value and the real-time evolution of the system is studied. Prompted by the very recent experimental data of $^{85}$Rb atoms at unitarity [Nature Phys. 10, 116 (2014)] we focus on the momentum distribution as a function of time. Our results suggest that at low momenta, a quasi-stationary momentum distribution is reached after a long transient, contrary to what found experimentally for large momenta which equilibrate on a time scale shorter than the one for three body losses.

Density functional theory of a trapped Bose gas with tunable scattering length: from weak-coupling to unitarity

We study an interacting Bose gas at T=0 under isotropic harmonic confinement within Density Functional Theory in the Local Density approximation. The energy density functional, which spans the whole range of positive scattering lengths up to the unitary regime (infinite scattering length), is obtained by fitting the recently calculated Monte Carlo bulk equation of state [Phys. Rev. A 89, 041602(R) (2014)]. We compare the density profiles of the trapped gas with those obtained by MC calculations. We solve the time-dependent Density Functional equation to study the effect of increasing values of the interaction strength on the frequencies of monopole and quadrupole oscillations of the trapped gas. We find that the monopole breathing mode shows a non-monotonous behavior as a function of the scattering length. We also consider the damping effect of three-body losses on such modes.

Dipolar Bose gas in highly anharmonic traps

By means of mean-field theory, we have studied the structure and excitation spectrum of a purely dipolar Bose gas in pancake-shaped trap where the confinement in the x-y plane is provided by a highly anharmonic potential resulting in an almost uniform confinement in the plane. We show that the stable condensates is characterized by marked radially structured density profiles. The stability diagram is calculated by independently varying the strength of the interaction and the trap geometry. By computing the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum near the instability line we show that soft "angular" rotons are responsible for the collapse of the system. The free expansion of the cloud after the trap is released is also studied by means of time-dependent calculations, showing that a prolate, cigar-shaped condensate is dynamically stabilized during the expansion, which would otherwise collapse. Dipolar condensates rotating with sufficiently high angular velocity show the formation of multiply-quantized giant vortices, while the condensates acquire a ring-shaped form.

Emulation of lossless exciton-polariton condensates by dual-core optical waveguides: Stability, collective modes, and dark solitons

We propose a possibility to simulate the exciton-polariton (EP) system in the lossless limit, which is not currently available in semiconductor microcavities, by means of a simple optical dual-core waveguide, with one core carrying the nonlinearity and operating close to the zero-group-velocity-dispersion (GVD) point, and the other core being linear and dispersive. Both 2D and 1D EP systems may be emulated by means of this optical setting. In the framework of this system, we find that, while the uniform state corresponding to the lower branch of the nonlinear dispersion relation is stable against small perturbations, the upper branch is always subject to the modulational instability (MI). The stability and instability are verified by direct simulations too. We analyze collective excitations on top of the stable lower-branch state, which include a Bogoliubov-like gapless mode and a gapped one. Analytical results are obtained for the corresponding sound velocity and energy gap. The effect of a uniform phase gradient (superflow) on the stability is considered too, with a conclusion that the lower-branch state becomes unstable above a critical wavenumber of the flux. Finally, we demonstrate that the stable 1D state may carry robust dark solitons.

Monte Carlo Simulations of the Unitary Bose Gas

We investigate the zero-temperature properties of a diluted homogeneous Bose gas made of $N$ particles interacting via a two-body square-well potential by perfor ming Monte Carlo simulations. We tune the interaction strength to achieve arbitrary positive values of the scattering length and compute by Monte Carlo quadrature the energy per particle $E/N$ and the condensate fraction $N_0/N$ of this system by using a Jastrow ansatz for the many-body wave function which avoids the formation of the self-bound ground-state and describes instead a (metastable) gaseous state with uniform den sity. In the unitarity limit, where the scattering length diverges while the range of the inter-atomic potential is much smaller than the average distance between atoms, we find a finite energy per particle ($E/N=0.70\ \hbar^2(6π^2n)^{2/3}/2m$, with $n$ th e number density) and a quite large condensate fraction ($N_0/N=0.83$).

Polarization of a quasi two-dimensional repulsive Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling: a variational study

Motivated by the remarkable experimental control of synthetic gauge fields in ultracold atomic systems, we investigate the effect of an artificial Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the spin polarization of a two-dimensional repulsive Fermi gas. By using a variational many-body wavefunction, based on a suitable spinorial structure, we find that the polarization properties of the system are indeed controlled by the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and repulsive interaction. In particular, two main effects are found: 1) The Rashba coupling determines a gradual increase of the degree of polarization beyond the critical repulsive interaction strength, at variance with conventional 2D Stoner instability. 2) The critical interaction strength, above which finite polarization is developed, shows a dependence on the Rashba coupling, i.e. it is enhanced in case the Rashba coupling exceeds a critical value. A simple analytic expression for the critical interaction strength is further derived in the context of our variational formulation, which allows for a straightforward and insightful analysis of the present problem.

Supersolid structure and excitation spectrum of soft-core bosons in 3D

By means of a mean-field method, we have studied the zero temperature structure and excitation spectrum of a three-dimensional soft-core bosonic system for a value of the interaction strength that favors a crystal structure made of atomic nano-clusters arranged with FCC ordering. In addition to the longitudinal and transverse phonon branches expected for a normal crystal, the excitation spectrum shows a soft mode related to the breaking of gauge symmetry, which signals a partial superfluid character of the solid. Additional evidence of supersolidity is provided by the calculation of the superfluid fraction, which shows a first-order drop, from 1 to 0.4, at the liquid-supersolid transition and a monotonic decrease as the interaction strength parameter is increased. The conditions for the coexistence of the supersolid with the homogeneous superfluid are discussed, and the surface tension of a representative solid-liquid interface is calculated.

Pair condensation in the BCS-BEC crossover of ultracold atoms loaded onto a 2D square lattice

We investigate the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly-bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of strongly-bound molecular dimers in a gas of ultracold atoms loaded on a two-dimensional optical lattice. By using the the mean-field BCS equations of the emerging Hubbard model and the concept of off-diagonal-long-range-order for fermions we calculate analytically and numerically the pair binding energy, the energy gap and the condensate fraction of Cooper pairs as a function of interaction strength and filling fractor of atoms in the lattice at zero temperature.

Coherence and entanglement in the ground-state of a bosonic Josephson junction:from macroscopic Schrödinger cats to separable Fock states

We consider a bosonic Josephson junction made of $N$ ultracold and dilute atoms confined by a quasi one-dimensional double-well potential within the two-site Bose-Hubbard model framework. The behaviour of the system is investigated at zero temperature by varying the inter-atomic interaction from the strongly attractive regime to the repulsive one. We show that the ground-state exhibits a crossover from a macroscopic Schrödinger-cat state to a separable Fock state through an atomic coherent regime. By diagonalizing the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we characterize the emergence of the mascroscopic cat states by calculating the Fisher information $F$, the coherence by means of the visibility $α$ of the interference fringes in the momentum distribution, and the quantum correlations by using the entanglement entropy $S$. Both Fisher information and visibility are shown to be related to the ground state energy by employing the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. This result, together with a perturbative calculation of the ground-state energy, makes possible to obtain simple analytical formulas for $F$ and $α$ over a range of interactions, in excellent agreement with the exact diagonalization of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. In the attractive regime the entanglement entropy attains values very close to its upper limit for a specific interaction strength lying in the region where coherence is lost and self trapping sets in.

Dynamical spin-flip susceptibility for a strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gas

The Stoner model predicts that a two-component Fermi gas at increasing repulsive interactions undergoes a ferromagnetic transition. Using the random-phase approximation we study the dynamical properties of the interacting Fermi gas. For an atomic Fermi gas under harmonic confinement we show that the transverse (spin-flip) dynamical susceptibility displays a clear signature of the ferromagnetic phase in a magnon peak emerging from the Stoner particle-hole continuum. The dynamical spin susceptibilities could be experimentally explored via spin-dependent Bragg spectroscopy.

Magnetization of a homogeneous two dimensional fermion gas with repulsive contact interaction and Rashba spin-orbit potential

The z axis magnetization of a two dimensional electron gas with contact repulsive interaction and in presence of a Rashba potential is computed by means of quantum field theory at second order. A striking effect of the pure Rashba interaction is that of hindering spin alignment along the z direction. Evidence of transition at critical repulsive interaction coupling constant is still found. The degree of magnetization, however, shows a clear dependence on the spin-orbit interaction strength. Furthermore, the transition to magnetized state appears to be smoothed by the presence of the Rashba interaction.

Variational Monte Carlo for spin-orbit interacting systems

Recently, a diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm was applied to the study of spin dependent interactions in condensed matter. Following some of the ideas presented therein, and applied to a Hamiltonian containing a Rashba-like interaction, a general variational Monte Carlo approach is here introduced that treats in an efficient and very accurate way the spin degrees of freedom in atoms when spin orbit effects are included in the Hamiltonian describing the electronic structure. We illustrate the algorithm on the evaluation of the spin-orbit splittings of isolated carbon and lead atoms. In the case of the carbon atom, we investigate the differences between the inclusion of spin-orbit in its realistic and effective spherically symmetrized forms. The method exhibits a very good accuracy in describing the small energy splittings, opening the way for a systematic quantum Monte Carlo studies of spin-orbit effects in atomic systems.

Viscosity-entropy ratio of the unitary Fermi gas from zero-temperature elementary excitations

We investigate the low-temperature behavior of the ratio between the shear viscosity ηand the entropy density s in the unitary Fermi gas by using a model based on the zero-temperature spectra of both bosonic collective modes and fermonic single-particle excitations. Our theoretical curve of η/s as a function of the temperature T is in qualitative agreement with the experimental data of trapped ultracold 6Li atomic gases. We find the minimum value η/s \simeq 0.44 (in units of \hbar/k_B) at the temperature T/T_F \simeq 0.27, with T_F the Fermi temperature.

Extended Thomas-Fermi Density Functional for the Unitary Fermi Gas

We determine the energy density $ξ(3/5) n ε_F$ and the gradient correction $λ\hbar^2(\nabla n)^2/(8m n)$ of the extended Thomas-Fermi (ETF) density functional, where $n$ is number density and $ε_F$ is Fermi energy, for a trapped two-components Fermi gas with infinite scattering length (unitary Fermi gas) on the basis of recent diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99}, 233201 (2007)]. In particular we find that $ξ=0.455$ and $λ=0.13$ give the best fit of the DMC data with an even number $N$ of particles. We also study the odd-even splitting $γN^{1/9} \hbar ω$ of the ground-state energy for the unitary gas in a harmonic trap of frequency $ω$ determining the constant $γ$. Finally we investigate the effect of the gradient term in the time-dependent ETF model by introducing generalized Galilei-invariant hydrodynamics equations.

Nonlinear quantum model for atomic Josephson junctions with one and two bosonic species

We study atomic Josephson junctions (AJJs) with one and two bosonic species confined by a double-well potential. Proceeding from the second quantized Hamiltonian, we show that it is possible to describe the zero-temperature AJJs microscopic dynamics by means of extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) models, which include usually-neglected nonlinear terms. Within the mean-field approximation, the Heisenberg equations derived from such two-mode models provide a description of AJJs macroscopic dynamics in terms of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We discuss the possibility to distinguish the Rabi, Josephson, and Fock regimes, in terms of the macroscopic parameters which appear in the EBH Hamiltonians and, then, in the ODEs. We compare the predictions for the relative populations of the Bose gases atoms in the two wells obtained from the numerical solutions of the two-mode ODEs, with those deriving from the direct numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs). Our investigations shows that the nonlinear terms of the ODEs are crucial to achieve a good agreement between ODEs and GPEs approaches, and in particular to give quantitative predictions of the self-trapping regime.

Atomic Josephson junction with two bosonic species

We study an atomic Josephson junction (AJJ) in presence of two interacting Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in a double well trap. We assume that bosons of different species interact with each other. The macroscopic wave functions of the two components obey to a system of two 3D coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE). We write the Lagrangian of the system, and from this we derive a system of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODE), for which the coupled pendula represent the mechanic analogous. These differential equations control the dynamical behavior of the fractional imbalance and of the relative phase of each bosonic component. We perform the stability analysis around the points which preserve the symmetry and get an analytical formula for the oscillation frequency around the stable points. Such a formula could be used as an indirect measure of the inter-species s-wave scattering length. We also study the oscillations of each fractional imbalance around zero and non zero - the macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) - time averaged values. For different values of the inter-species interaction amplitude, we carry out this study both by directly solving the two GPE and by solving the corresponding coupled pendula equations. We show that, under certain conditions, the predictions of these two approaches are in good agreement. Moreover, we calculate the crossover value of the inter-species interaction amplitude which signs the onset of MQST.
