Shearing maps and a Runge map of the unit ball which does not embed into a Loewner chain with range $\mathbb C^n$

In this paper we study the class of "shearing" holomorphic maps of the unit ball of the form $(z,w)\mapsto (z+g(w), w)$. Besides general properties, we use such maps to construct an example of a normalized univalent map of the ball onto a Runge domain in $\mathbb C^n$ which however cannot be embedded into a Loewner chain whose range is $\mathbb C^n$.

Visibility of Kobayashi geodesics in convex domains and related properties

Let $D\subset \mathbb C^n$ be a bounded domain. A pair of distinct boundary points $\{p,q\}$ of $D$ has the visibility property provided there exist a compact subset $K_{p,q}\subset D$ and open neighborhoods $U_p$ of $p$ and $U_q$ of $q$, such that the real geodesics for the Kobayashi metric of $D$ which join points in $U_p$ and $U_q$ intersect $K_{p,q}$. Every Gromov hyperbolic convex domain enjoys the visibility property for any couple of boundary points. The Goldilocks domains introduced by Bharali and Zimmer and the log-type domains of Liu and Wang also enjoy the visibility property. In this paper we relate the growth of the Kobayashi distance near the boundary with visibility and provide new families of convex domains where that property holds. We use the same methods to provide refinements of localization results for the Kobayashi distance, and give a localized sufficient condition for visibility. We also exploit visibility to study the boundary behavior of biholomorphic maps.

Automorphisms of $\mathbb C^2$ with parabolic cylinders

A {\sl parabolic cylinder} is an invariant, non-recurrent Fatou component $Ω$ of an automorphism $F$ of $\mathbb C^2$ satisfying: (1) The closure of the $ω$-limit set of $F$ on $Ω$ contains an isolated fixed point, (2) there exists a univalent map $Φ$ from $Ω$ into $\mathbb C^2$ conjugating $F$ to the translation $(z,w) \mapsto (z+1, w)$, and (3) every limit map of $\{F^{\circ n}\}$ on $Ω$ has one-dimensional image. In this paper we prove the existence of parabolic cylinders for an explicit class of maps, and show that examples in this class can be constructed as compositions of shears and overshears.

Semigroup-fication of univalent self-maps of the unit disc

Let $f$ be a univalent self-map of the unit disc. We introduce a technique, that we call {\sl semigroup-fication}, which allows to construct a continuous semigroup $(ϕ_t)$ of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc whose time one map $ϕ_1$ is, in a sense, very close to $f$. The semigrup-fication of $f$ is of the same type as $f$ (elliptic, hyperbolic, parabolic of positive step or parabolic of zero step) and there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of boundary regular fixed points of $f$ with a given multiplier and the corresponding set for $ϕ_1$. Moreover, in case $f$ (and hence $ϕ_1$) has no interior fixed points, the slope of the orbits converging to the Denjoy-Wolff point is the same. The construction is based on holomorphic models, localization techniques and Gromov hyperbolicity. As an application of this construction, we prove that in the non-elliptic case, the orbits of $f$ converge non-tangentially to the Denjoy-Wolff point if and only if the Koenigs domain of $f$ is "almost symmetric" with respect to vertical lines.

Topological invariants for semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc

Let $(φ_t)$, $(ϕ_t)$ be two one-parameter semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc $\mathbb D\subset \mathbb C$. Let $f:\mathbb D \to \mathbb D$ be a homeomorphism. We prove that, if $f \circ ϕ_t=φ_t \circ f$ for all $t\geq 0$, then $f$ extends to a homeomorphism of $\bar{\mathbb D}$ outside exceptional maximal contact arcs (in particular, for elliptic semigroups, $f$ extends to a homeomorphism of $\bar{\mathbb D}$). Using this result, we study topological invariants for one-parameter semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc.

Growth Estimates for the Numerical Range of Holomorphic Mappings and Applications

The numerical range of holomorphic mappings arises in many aspects of nonlinear analysis, finite and infinite dimensional holomorphy, and complex dynamical systems. In particular, this notion plays a crucial role in establishing exponential and product formulas for semigroups of holomorphic mappings, the study of flow invariance and range conditions, geometric function theory in finite and infinite dimensional Banach spaces, and in the study of complete and semi-complete vector fields and their applications to starlike and spirallike mappings, and to Bloch (univalence) radii for locally biholomorphic mappings. In the present paper we establish lower and upper bounds for the numerical range of holomorphic mappings in Banach spaces. In addition, we study and discuss some geometric and quantitative analytic aspects of fixed point theory, nonlinear resolvents of holomorphic mappings, Bloch radii, as well as radii of starlikeness and spirallikeness.

Variation of Loewner chains, extreme and support points in the class $S^0$ in higher dimensions

We introduce a family of natural normalized Loewner chains in the unit ball, which we call "geräumig"---spacious---which allow to construct, by means of suitable variations, other normalized Loewner chains which coincide with the given ones from a certain time on. We apply our construction to the study of support points, extreme points and time-$\log M$-reachable functions in the class $S^0$ of mappings admitting parametric representation.

Common boundary regular fixed points for holomorphic semigroups in strongly convex domains

Let $D$ be a bounded strongly convex domain with smooth boundary in $\mathbb C^N$. Let $(ϕ_t)$ be a continuous semigroup of holomorphic self-maps of $D$. We prove that if $p\in \partial D$ is an isolated boundary regular fixed point for $ϕ_{t_0}$ for some $t_0>0$, then $p$ is a boundary regular fixed point for $ϕ_t$ for all $t\geq 0$. Along the way we also study backward iteration sequences for elliptic holomorphic self-maps of $D$.

Shearing process and an example of a bounded support function in $S^0(\mathbb B^2)$

We introduce a process, that we call "shearing", which for any given normal Loewner chain produces a normal Loewner chain made of shears automorphisms. As an application, and in stringent contrast to the one-dimensional case, we prove the existence of a starlike bounded function in the class $S^0$ of the ball $\mathbb B^2$ (in fact the restriction of a shear automorphism of $\mathbb C^2$) which is a support point for a linear continuous functional.

Abel averages and holomorphically pseudo-contractive maps in Banach spaces

A class of maps in a complex Banach space is studied, which includes both unbounded linear operators and nonlinear holomorphic maps. The defining property, which we call {\sl pseudo-contractivity}, is introduced by means of the Abel averages of such maps. We show that the studied maps are dissipative in the spirit of the classical Lumer-Phillips theorem. For pseudo-contractive holomorphic maps, we establish the power convergence of the Abel averages to holomorphic retractions.

Boundary regular fixed points in Loewner theory

We characterize regular fixed points of evolution families in terms of analytical properties of the associated Herglotz vector fields and geometrical properties of the associated Loewner chains. We present several examples showing the rôle of the given conditions. Moreover, we study the relations between evolution families and Herglotz vector fields at regular contact points and prove an embedding result for univalent self-maps of the unit disc with a given boundary regular fixed point into an evolution family with prescribed boundary data.

Contact points and fractional singularities for semigroups of holomorphic self-maps in the unit disc

We study boundary singularities which can appear for infinitesimal generators of one-parameter semigroups of holomorphic self-maps in the unit disc. We introduce "regular" fractional singularities and characterize them in terms of the behavior of the associated semigroups and Koenigs functions. We also provide necessary and sufficient geometric criteria on the shape of the image of the Koenigs function for having such singularities. In order to do this, we study contact points of semigroups and prove that any contact (not fixed) point of a one-parameter semigroup corresponds to a maximal arc on the boundary to which the associated infinitesimal generator extends holomorphically as a vector field tangent to this arc.

Embedding univalent functions in filtering Loewner chains in higher dimension

We discuss the problem of embedding univalent functions into Loewner chains in higher dimension. In particular, we prove that a normalized univalent map of the ball in $\C^n$ whose image is a smooth strongly pseudoconvex domain is embeddable into a normalized Loewner chain (satisfying also some extra regularity properties) if and only if the closure of the image is polynomially convex.

Growth estimates for pseudo-dissipative holomorphic maps in Banach spaces

In this paper we introduce a class of pseudo-dissipative holomorphic maps which contains, in particular, the class of infinitesimal generators of semigroups of holomorphic maps on the unit ball of a complex Banach space. We give a growth estimate for maps of this class. In particular, it follows that pseudo-dissipative maps on the unit ball of (infinite-dimensional) Banach spaces are bounded on each domain strictly contained inside the ball. We also present some applications.

Dynamics of multi-resonant biholomorphisms

The goal of this paper is to study the dynamics of holomorphic diffeomorphisms in C^n such that the resonances among the first 1<= r<= n eigenvalues of the differential are generated over N by a finite number of Q-linearly independent multi-indices (and more resonances are allowed for other eigenvalues). We give sharp conditions for the existence of basins of attraction where a Fatou coordinate can be defined. Furthermore, we obtain a generalization of the Leau-Fatou flower theorem, providing a complete description of the dynamics in a full neighborhood of the origin for 1-resonant parabolically attracting holomorphic germs in Poincare'-Dulac normal form.

Regular poles and $β$-numbers in the theory of holomorphic semigroups

We introduce the notion of regular (boundary) poles for infinitesimal generators of semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc. We characterize such regular poles in terms of $β$-points (i.e. pre-images of values with positive Carleson-Makarov $β$-numbers) of the associated semigroup and of the associated Königs intertwining function. We also define a natural duality operation in the cone of infinitesimal generators and show that the regular poles of an infinitesimal generator correspond to the regular null poles of the dual generator. Finally we apply such a construction to study radial multi-slits and give an example of a non-isolated radial slit whose tip has not a positive Carleson-Makarov $β$-number.

The range of holomorphic maps at boundary points

We prove a boundary version of the open mapping theorem for holomorphic maps between strongly pseudoconvex domains. That is, we prove that the local image of a holomorphic map $f:D\to D'$ close to a boundary regular contact point $p\in \de D$ where the Jacobian is bounded from zero along normal non-tangential directions has to eventually contain every cone (and more generally every admissible region) with vertex at $f(p)$.

An abstract approach to Loewner chains

We present a new geometric construction of Loewner chains in one and several complex variables which holds on a complete hyperbolic complex manifold M and prove that there is essentially a one-to-one correspondence between evolution families of order d and Loewner chains of the same order. As a consequence we obtain a solution for any Loewner-Kufarev PDE, given by univalent mappings (f_t) from M to a complex manifold N. The problem of finding solutions given by univalent mappings with range in C^n is reduced to investigating whether the union of the images f_t(M) is biholomorphic to a domain in C^n. We apply such results to the study of univalent mappings from the unit ball B^n to C^n.

Dynamics of one-resonant biholomorphisms

Our first main result is a construction of a simple formal normal form for holomorphic diffeomorphisms in C^n whose differentials have one-dimensional family of resonances in the first m eigenvalues, m <= n (but more resonances are allowed for other eigenvalues). Next, we provide invariants and give conditions for the existence of basins of attraction. Finally, we give applications and examples demonstrating the sharpness of our conditions.
