Manifolds that admit a double disk-bundle decomposition

Under mild topological restrictions, this article establishes that a smooth, closed, simply connected manifold of dimension at most seven which can be decomposed as the union of two disk bundles must be rationally elliptic. In dimension five, such manifolds are classified up to diffeomorphism, while the same is true in dimension six when either the second Betti number vanishes or the third Betti number is non-trivial.

Wrapped Distributions on homogeneous Riemannian manifolds

We provide a general framework for constructing probability distributions on Riemannian manifolds, taking advantage of area-preserving maps and isometries. Control over distributions' properties, such as parameters, symmetry and modality yield a family of flexible distributions that are straightforward to sample from, suitable for use within Monte Carlo algorithms and latent variable models, such as autoencoders. As an illustration, we empirically validate our approach by utilizing our proposed distributions within a variational autoencoder and a latent space network model. Finally, we take advantage of the generalized description of this framework to posit questions for future work.

Three-Dimensional Alexandrov spaces with positive or nonnegative Ricci curvature

We study closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with a lower Ricci curvature bound in the $\mathsf{CD}^*(K,N)$ sense, focusing our attention on those with positive or nonnegative Ricci curvature. First, we show that a closed three-dimensional $\mathsf{CD}^*(2,3)$-Alexandrov space must be homeomorphic to a spherical space form or to the suspension of $\mathbb{R}P^2$. We then classify closed three-dimensional $\mathsf{CD}^*(0,3)$-Alexandrov spaces.

Cohomogeneity one topological manifolds revisited

We prove a structure theorem for closed topological manifolds of cohomogeneity one; this result corrects an oversight in the literature. We complete the equivariant classification of closed, simply connected cohomogeneity one topological manifolds in dimensions $5$, $6$, and $7$ and obtain topological characterizations of these spaces. In these dimensions, these manifolds are homeomorphic to smooth manifolds.

Singular Riemannian foliations and applications to positive and nonnegative curvature

We determine the structure of the fundamental group of the regular leaves of a closed singular Riemannian foliation on a compact, simply connected Riemannian manifold. We also study closed singular Riemannian foliations whose leaves are homeomorphic to aspherical or to Bieberbach manifolds. These foliations, which we call A-foliations and B-foliations, respectively, generalize isometric torus actions on Riemannian manifolds. We apply our results to the classification problem of compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- and 5-manifolds with positive or nonnegative sectional curvature.

On three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces

We study three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with a lower curvature bound, focusing on extending three classical results on three-dimensional manifolds: First, we show that a closed three-dimensional Alexandrov space of positive curvature, with at least one topological singularity, must be homeomorphic to the suspension of the real projective plane; we use this to classify, up to homeomorphism, closed, positively curved Alexandrov spaces of dimension three. Second, we classify closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of nonnegative curvature. Third, we study the well-known Poincaré Conjecture in dimension three, in the context of Alexandrov spaces, in the two forms it is usually formulated for manifolds. We first show that the only three-dimensional Alexandrov space that is also a homotopy sphere is the 3-sphere; then we give examples of closed, geometric, simply connected three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces for five of the eight Thurston geometries, proving along the way the impossibility of getting such examples for the Nil, $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})}$ and Sol geometries. We conclude the paper by proving the analogue of the geometrization conjecture for closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces.

Simply connected Alexandrov 4-manifolds with positive or nonnegative curvature and torus actions

We point out that a 4-dimensional topological manifold with an Alexandrov metric (of curvature bounded below) and with an effective, isometric action of the circle or the 2-torus is locally smooth. This observation implies that the topological and equivariant classifications of compact, simply connected Riemannian 4-manifolds with positive or nonnegative sectional curvature and an effective isometric action of a circle or a 2-torus also hold if we consider Alexandrov manifolds instead of Riemannian manifolds.

A note on maximal symmetry rank, quasipositive curvature, and low dimensional manifolds

We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.

Isometry groups of Alexandrov spaces

For an Alexandrov space (with curvature bounded below), we determine the maximal dimension of its isometry group and show that the space is isometric to a Riemannian manifold, provided the dimension of its isometry group is maximal. We also determine a gap in the possible dimensions of the isometry groups and show that if the Alexandrov space is symmetric, then it is isometric to a Riemannian manifold.

Cohomogeneity-two torus actions on non-negatively curved manifolds of low dimension

Let $M^n$, $n \in \{4,5,6\}$, be a compact, simply connected $n$-manifold which admits some Riemannian metric with non-negative curvature and an isometry group of maximal possible rank. Then any smooth, effective action on $M^n$ by a torus $T^{n-2}$ is equivariantly diffeomorphic to an isometric action on a normal biquotient. Furthermore, it follows that any effective, isometric circle action on a compact, simply connected, non-negatively curved four-dimensional manifold is equivariantly diffeomorphic to an effective, isometric action on a normal biquotient.

Non-negatively Curved Manifolds with Maximal Symmetry Rank in Low Dimensions

We classify closed, simply-connected non-negatively curved 5-manifolds admitting an (almost) effective, isometric $T^3$ or $T^2$ action. As a direct consequence, we show that for any manifold, of dimensions up to and including 9 under the same hypotheses, the maximal symmetry rank is equal to $[2n/3]$ and the free rank is less than or equal to one half that value.

Nonnegatively curved fixed point homogeneous 5-manifolds

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group acting effectively by isometries on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with nonempty fixed point set $Fix(M,G)$. We say that the action is \emph{fixed point homogeneous} if $G$ acts transitively on a normal sphere to some component of $Fix(M,G)$, equivalently, if $Fix(M,G)$ has codimension one in the orbit space of the action. We classify up to diffeomorphism closed, simply connected 5-manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and an effective fixed point homogeneous isometric action of a compact Lie group.

Nonnegatively curved fixed point homogeneous manifolds in low dimensions

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group acting isometrically on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with nonempty fixed point set $M^G$. We say that $M$ is fixed-point homogeneous if $G$ acts transitively on a normal sphere to some component of $M^G$. Fixed-point homogeneous manifolds with positive sectional curvature have been completely classified. We classify fixed-point homogeneous Riemannian manifolds in dimensions 3 and 4 and determine which nonnegatively curved simply-connected 4-manifolds admit a smooth fixed-point homogeneous circle action with a given orbit space structure.

Cohomogeneity One Alexandrov Spaces

We obtain a structure theorem for closed, cohomogeneity one Alexandrov spaces and we classify closed, cohomogeneity one Alexandrov spaces in dimensions 3 and 4. As a corollary, we obtain the classification of closed, $n$-dimensional, cohomogeneity one Alexandrov spaces admitting an isometric $T^{n-1}$ action. In contrast to the 1- and 2-dimensional cases, where it is known that an Alexandrov space is a topological manifold, in dimension 3 the classification contains, in addition to the known cohomogeneity one manifolds, the spherical suspension of $RP^2$, which is not a manifold.
