Nonuniform dependence on initial data for compressible gas dynamics: The Cauchy problem on $\mathbb{R}^2$

The Cauchy problem for the two dimensional compressible Euler equations with data in the Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb R^2)$ is known to have a unique solution of the same Sobolev class for a short time, and the data-to-solution map is continuous. We prove that the data-to-solution map on the plane is not uniformly continuous on any bounded subset of Sobolev class functions.

Nonuniform dependence on initial data for compressible gas dynamics: The periodic Cauchy problem

We start with the classic result that the Cauchy problem for ideal compressible gas dynamics is locally well posed in time in the sense of Hadamard; there is a unique solution that depends continuously on initial data in Sobolev space $H^s$ for $s>d/2+1$ where $d$ is the space dimension. We prove that the data to solution map for periodic data in two dimensions although continuous is not uniformly continuous on any bounded subset of Sobolev class functions.

Generalized Euler-Poincaré equations on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, orbit invariants and applications

We develop the necessary tools, including a notion of logarithmic derivative for curves in homogeneous spaces, for deriving a general class of equations including Euler-Poincaré equations on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces. Orbit invariants play an important role in this context and we use these invariants to prove global existence and uniqueness results for a class of PDE. This class includes Euler-Poincaré equations that have not yet been considered in the literature as well as integrable equations like Camassa-Holm, Degasperis-Procesi, $μ$CH and $μ$DP equations, and the geodesic equations with respect to right invariant Sobolev metrics on the group of diffeomorphisms of the circle.

The periodic Cauchy problem for Novikov's equation

We study the periodic Cauchy problem for an integrable equation with cubic nonlinearities introduced by V. Novikov. Like the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, Novikov's equation has Lax pair representations and admits peakon solutions, but it has nonlinear terms that are cubic, rather than quadratic. We show the local well-posedness of the problem in Sobolev spaces and existence and uniqueness of solutions for all time using orbit invariants. Furthermore we prove a Cauchy-Kowalevski type theorem for this equation, that establishes the existence and uniqueness of real analytic solutions.
