Trapping $\tfrac{h}{2e}$ Flux in Metals

We report on a new flux quantization phenomenon in metals. We study the response of normal metals to the presence of localized magnetic flux. We find that, due to backreaction effects, the metal traps 0 flux or $\tfrac{h}{2e}$ flux (half flux). We exhibit this effect both for metals pierced by magnetic solenoids and metals wrapping a magnetic solenoid. In the latter case we demonstrate the trapping of magnetic flux analytically. Furthermore, we find that as the solenoid is adiabatically turned off, a logarithmically enhanced localized equilibrium current persists, reflecting perfect defect-diamagnetism of the Fermi gas.

Chaotic RG Flow in Tensor Models

We study a bi-antisymmetric tensor quantum field theory with $O(N_1)\times O(N_2)$ symmetry. Working in $4-ε$ dimensions we calculate the beta functions up to second order in the coupling constants and analyze in detail the Renormalization Group (RG) flow and its fixed points. We allow $N_1$ and $N_2$ to assume general real values and treat them as bifurcation parameters. In studying the behavior of the model in the space of $N_1$ and $N_2$ we find a point where a zero-Hopf bifurcation occurs. In the vicinity of this point, we provide analytical and numerical evidence for the existence of Shilnikov homoclinic orbits, which induce chaotic behavior in the RG flow of the model. As a simple warm-up example for the study of chaotic RG flows, we also review the non-hermitian Ising chain and show how for special complex values of the coupling constant, its RG transformations are chaotic and equivalent to the Bernoulli map.

Supersymmetry in QCD$_2$ coupled to fermions

We consider $1+1$ dimensional Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $G$ coupled to a massive Majorana fermion field in an adjoint representation and a number of massless Dirac or Majorana fermions transforming in arbitrary representations of the gauge group $G$. It is shown that the spectrum of the massive sector of this theory becomes supersymmetric at particular mass of adjoint fermion. This mass is independent of the detailed structure of the massless sector of the model and depends only on the gauge group $G$ and integer $k$ measuring the total anomaly. The massless sector of the model is shown to be not necessarily supersymmetric.

Hagedorn Temperature in Large $N$ Majorana Quantum Mechanics

We discuss two types of quantum mechanical models that couple large numbers of Majorana fermions and have orthogonal symmetry groups. In models of vector type, only one of the symmetry groups has a large rank. The large $N$ limit is taken keeping $gN=λ$ fixed, where $g$ multiplies the quartic Hamiltonian. We introduce a simple model with $O(N)\times SO(4)$ symmetry, whose energies are expressed in terms of the quadratic Casimirs of the symmetry groups. This model may be deformed so that the symmetry is $O(N)\times O(2)^2$, and the Hamiltonian reduces to that studied in arXiv:1802.10263. We find analytic expressions for the large $N$ density of states and free energy. In both vector models, the large $N$ density of states varies approximately as $e^{-|E|/λ}$ for a wide range of energies. This gives rise to critical behavior as the temperature approaches the Hagedorn temperature $T_{\rm H} = λ$. In the formal large $N$ limit, the specific heat blows up as $(T_H- T)^{-2}$, which implies that $T_H$ is the limiting temperature. However, at any finite $N$, it is possible to reach arbitrarily large temperatures. Thus, the finite $N$ effects smooth out the Hagedorn transition. We also study models of matrix type, which have two $O(N)$ symmetry groups with large rank. An example is provided by the Majorana matrix model with $O(N)^2\times O(2)$ symmetry, which was studied in arXiv:1802.10263. In contrast with the vector models, the density of states is smooth and nearly Gaussian near the middle of the spectrum.

Supersymmetric Tensor Model at Large $N$ and Small $ε$

We study the $O(N)^3$ supersymmetric quantum field theory of a scalar superfield $Φ_{abc}$ with a tetrahedral interaction. In the large $N$ limit the theory is dominated by the melonic diagrams. We solve the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations in continuous dimensions below $3$. For sufficiently large $N$ we find an IR stable fixed point and computed the $3-ε$ expansion up to the second order of perturbation theory, which is in agreement with the solution of DS equations. We also describe the $1+ε$ expansion of the model and discuss the possiblity of adding the Chern-Simons action to gauge the supersymmetric model.

Ultraviolet phenomena in AdS self-interacting quantum field theory

We study the one-loop corrections to the four-point function in the Anti de Sitter space-time for a $ϕ^4$ field theory. Our calculation shows the existence of non-local counterterms which however respect the AdS isometry. Our arguments are quite general and applicable to other (non-conformal) AdS field theories. We also explain why calculations in Euclidean and Lorentzian signatures should differ even at the leading order in non globaly hyperbolic manifolds.

A way to distinguish very compact stellar objects from black holes

We propose a way to distinguish compact stellar object, whose size is very close to its Schwarzschild radius, from the collapsing stars. Namely, we show that {\it massive} fields in the vicinity of a very compact stellar object have discrete energy levels. (These levels are different from the standard non-relativistic ones present in Coulomb type of potentials and from the quasinormal modes.) At the same time we show that there are no such discrete levels for massive fields in the vicinity of a collapsing star.

Hawking radiation and secularly growing loop corrections

We study the expectation value of the energy momentum tensor during thin shell collapse for a massive, real, scalar field theory. At tree-level, we find thermal, Hawking-type, behaviour for the energy flux. Using the Schwinger-Keldysh technique, we calculate two-loop corrections to the tree-level correlation functions and show that they exhibit secular growth, suggesting the breakdown of the perturbation theory.
