Uniformly expanding vacuum: a possible interpretation of the dark energy

Following the spirit of the equivalence principle, we take a step further to recognize the free fall of the observer as a method to eliminate causes that would lead the perceived vacuum to change its original state. Thus, it is expected that the vacuum should be in a rigid Minkowski state or be uniformly expanding. By carefully investigating the impact on measurement caused by the expansion, we clarify the exact meaning of the uniformly expanding vacuum and find that this proposal may be able to explain the current observations of an accelerating universe.

Disformal transformation in Newton-Cartan geometry

Newton-Cartan geometry has played a central role in recent discussions of non-relativistic holography and condensed matter systems. Although the conformal transformation in non-relativistic holography can be easily rephrased in Newton-Cartan geometry, we show that it requires a nontrivial procedure to get the consistent form of anisotropic disformal transformation in this geometry. Furthermore, as an application of the newly obtained disformal transformation, we use it to induce a new geometry.

Generalized Hodge dual for torsion in teleparallel gravity

For teleparallel gravity in four dimensions, Lucas and Pereira have shown that a generalized Hodge dual for torsion tensor can be defined with coefficients determined by mathematical consistency. In this paper, we demonstrate that a direct generalization to other dimensions fails and no new generalized Hodge dual operator could be given. Furthermore, if one enforces the definition of a generalized Hodge dual to be consistent with the action of teleparallel gravity in general dimensions, the basic identity for any sensible Hodge dual would require an \textit{ad hoc} definition for the second Hodge dual operation which is totally unexpected. Therefore, we conclude that at least for the torsion tensor, the observation of Lucas and Pereira only applies to four dimensions.

Thermodynamic approach to field equations in Lovelock gravity and f(R) gravity revisited

The first law of thermodynamics at black hole horizons is known to be obtainable from the gravitational field equations. A recent study claims that the contributions at inner horizons should be considered in order to give the conventional first law of black hole thermodynamics. Following this method, we revisit the thermodynamic aspects of field equations in the Lovelock gravity and f(R) gravity by focusing on two typical classes of charged black holes in the two theories.

$f(T)$ gravity from holographic Ricci dark energy model with new boundary conditions

Commonly used boundary conditions in reconstructing $f(T)$ gravity from holographic Ricci dark energy model (RDE) are found to cause some problem, we therefore propose new boundary conditions in this paper. By reconstructing $f(T)$ gravity from the RDE with these new boundary conditions, we show that the new ones are better than the present commonly used ones since they can give the physically expected information, which is lost when the commonly used ones are taken in the reconstruction, of the resulting $f(T)$ theory. Thus, the new boundary conditions proposed here are more suitable for the reconstruction of $f(T)$ gravity.

A modified variational principle for gravity in modified Weyl geometry

The usual interpretation of Weyl geometry is modified in two senses. First, both the additive Weyl connection and its variation are treated as (1, 2) tensors under the action of Weyl covariant derivative. Second, a modified covariant derivative operator is introduced which still preserves the tensor structure of the theory. With its help, the Riemann tensor in Weyl geometry can be written in a more compact form. We justify this modification in detail from several aspects and obtain some insights along the way. By introducing some new transformation rules for the variation of tensors under the action of Weyl covariant derivative, we find a Weyl version of Palatini identity for Riemann tensor. To derive the energy-momentum tensor and equations of motion for gravity in Weyl geometry, one naturally applies this identity at first, and then converts the variation of additive Weyl connection to those of metric tensor and Weyl gauge field. We also discuss possible connections to the current literature on Weyl-invariant extension of massive gravity and the variational principles in f(R) gravity.

Entropic corrections and modified Friedmann equations in the emergence of cosmic space

In the emergent cosmic space scenario recently proposed by Padmanabhan, the expansion of the universe is attributed to the difference between the number of degrees of freedom on a holographic surface and the one in the bulk. Based on this idea, we explore the cases where logarithmic and power-law entropic corrections are present, respectively. The previously found modified Friedmann equations are reproduced through an improved proposal, and we show that the same results can be obtained using a generalized expansion law.

Harrison metrics for the Schwarzschild black hole

Based on the hidden conformal symmetry, some authors have proposed a Harrison metric for the Schwarzschild black hole. We give a procedure which can generate a family of Harrison metrics starting from a general set of SL(2, R) vector fields. By analogy with the subtracted geometry of the Kerr black hole, we find a new Harrison metric for the Schwarzschild case. Its conformal generators are also investigated using the Killing equations in the near-horizon limit.

Hidden conformal symmetry of extremal Kaluza-Klein black hole in four dimensions

We study the hidden conformal symmetry of four-dimensional extremal Kaluza-Klein black hole. The scalar Laplacian corresponding to the radial equation in the near-region is rewritten in terms of the $SL(2,\mathbb R)$ quadratic Casimir. Using the first law of black hole thermodynamics, this symmetry enables us to obtain the conjugate charges for the CFT side. The real-time correlators are also found to agree with the CFT expectations.

Thermodynamics of nonspherical black holes from Liouville theory

A Liouville formalism was proposed many years ago to account for the black hole entropy. It was recently updated to connect thermodynamics of general black holes, in particular the Hawking temperature, to two-dimensional Liouville theory. This relies on the dimensional reduction to two-dimensional black hole metric. The relevant dilaton gravity model can be rewritten as a Liouville-like theory. We refine the method and give general formulas for the corresponding scalar and energy-momentum tensors in Liouville theory. This enables us to read off the black hole temperature using a relation which was found about three decades ago. Then the range of application is extended to include nonspherical black holes such as neutral and charged black rings, topological black hole and the case coupled to a scalar field. As for the entropy, following previous authors, we invoke the Lagrangian approach to central charge by Cadoni and then use the Cardy formula. The general relevant parameters are also given. This approach is more advantageous than the usual Hamiltonian approach which was used by the old Liouville formalism for black hole entropy.
