AutoKnow: Self-Driving Knowledge Collection for Products of Thousands of Types

Can one build a knowledge graph (KG) for all products in the world? Knowledge graphs have firmly established themselves as valuable sources of information for search and question answering, and it is natural to wonder if a KG can contain information about products offered at online retail sites. There have been several successful examples of generic KGs, but organizing information about products poses many additional challenges, including sparsity and noise of structured data for products, complexity of the domain with millions of product types and thousands of attributes, heterogeneity across large number of categories, as well as large and constantly growing number of products. We describe AutoKnow, our automatic (self-driving) system that addresses these challenges. The system includes a suite of novel techniques for taxonomy construction, product property identification, knowledge extraction, anomaly detection, and synonym discovery. AutoKnow is (a) automatic, requiring little human intervention, (b) multi-scalable, scalable in multiple dimensions (many domains, many products, and many attributes), and (c) integrative, exploiting rich customer behavior logs. AutoKnow has been operational in collecting product knowledge for over 11K product types.

Crystal-electric-field excitations in a quantum-spin-liquid candidate NaErS$_2$

The delafossite family of compounds with a triangular lattice of rare earth ions has been recently proposed as a candidate host for quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. To realize QSLs, the crystal-electric-field (CEF) ground state of the rare earth ions should be composed of a doublet that allows sizable quantum tunneling, but till now the knowledge on CEF states in the delafossite compounds is still limited. Here we employ inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study the CEF transitions in a powder sample of the delafossite NaErS$_2$, where the large total angular momentum $J = 15/2$ of the Er$^{3+} $ ions and the resulting plethora of CEF transitions enable an accurate fit of the CEF parameters. Our study reveals nearly isotropic spins with large $J_z = \pm 1/2$ components for the Er$^{3+}$ CEF ground states, which might facilitate the development of a QSL state. The scaling of the obtained CEF Hamiltonian to different rare earth ions suggests that sizable $J_z = \pm 1/2$ components are generally present in the CEF ground states, supporting the ternary sulfide delafossites as potential QSL hosts.

A Near-Ideal Molecule-Based Haldane Spin-Chain

The molecular coordination complex NiI$_2$(3,5-lut)$_4$ [where (3,5-lut) $=$ (3,5-lutidine) $=$ (C$_7$H$_9$N)] has been synthesized and characterized by several techniques including synchrotron X-ray diffraction, ESR, SQUID magnetometry, pulsed-field magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation. Templated by the configuration of 3,5-lut ligands the molecules pack in-registry with the Ni--I$\cdots$I--Ni chains aligned along the $c$--axis. This arrangement leads to through-space I$\cdots$I magnetic coupling which is directly measured for the first time in this work. The net result is a near-ideal realization of the $S = 1$ Haldane chain with $J = 17.5~\rm{K}$ and energy gaps of $Δ^{\parallel} = 5.3~{\rm K}$ $Δ^{\perp} =7.7~{\rm K}$, split by the easy-axis single-ion anisotropy $D=-1.2~{\rm K}$. The ratio $D/J = -0.07$ affords one of the most isotropic Haldane systems yet discovered, while the ratio $Δ_0/J = 0.40(1)$ (where $Δ_0$ is the average gap size) is close to its ideal theoretical value, suggesting a very high degree of magnetic isolation of the spin chains in this material. The Haldane gap is closed by orientation-dependent critical fields $μ_0H_{\rm c}^{\parallel} = 5.3~\rm{T}$ and $μ_0H_{\rm c}^{\perp} = 4.3~\rm{T}$, which are readily accessible experimentally and permit investigations across the entirety of the Haldane phase, with the fully polarized state occurring at $μ_0 H_{\rm s}^{\parallel}=46.0~\rm{T}$ and $μ_0 H_{\rm s}^{\perp}=50.7~\rm{T}$. The results are explicable within the so-called fermion model, in contrast to other reported easy-axis Haldane systems. Zero-field magnetic order is absent down to $20~{\rm mK}$ and emergent end-chain effects are observed in the gapped state, as evidenced by detailed low-temperature measurements.

Ultrafast time resolved photo-electric emission

The emission times of laser-triggered electrons from a sharp tungsten tip are directly characterized under ultrafast, near-infrared laser excitation at Keldysh parameters $6.6< γ< 19.1$. Emission delays up to 10 fs are observed, which are inferred from the energy gain of photoelectrons emitted into a synchronously driven microwave cavity. ~ fs timing resolution is achieved in a configuration capable of measuring timing shifts up to 55 ps. The technique can also be used to measure the microwave phase inside the cavity with a precision below 70 fs upon the energy resolved detection of a single electron.

Lattice-site-specific spin-dynamics in double perovskite Sr2CoOsO6

We have studied the magnetic properties and spin-dynamics of the structurally-ordered double perovskite Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$. Our neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation and ac-susceptibility measurements reveal two antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases on cooling from room temperature down to 2 K. In the first AFM phase, with transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}=108$ K, cobalt (3$d^7$, $S=3/2$) and osmium (5$d^2$, $S=1$) moments fluctuate dynamically, while their \textit{average} effective moments undergo long-range order. In the second AFM phase with $T_{\mathrm{N}}=67$ K, cobalt moments first become frozen and induce a noncollinear spin-canted AFM state, while dynamically fluctuating osmium moments are later frozen into a randomly canted state at $T\approx 5$ K. Our \textit{ab initio} calculations indicate that the effective exchange coupling between cobalt and osmium sites is rather weak, so that cobalt and osmium sublattices exhibit different ground states and spin-dynamics, making Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$ distinct from previously reported double-perovskite compounds.
