Moments of discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles

We obtain factorial moment identities for the Charlier, Meixner and Krawtchouk orthogonal polynomial ensembles. Building on earlier results by Ledoux [Elect. J. Probab. 10, (2005)], we find hypergeometric representations for the factorial moments when the reference measure is Poisson (Charlier ensemble) and geometric (a particular case of the Meixner ensemble). In these cases, if the number of particles is suitably randomised, the factorial moments have a polynomial property, and satisfy three-term recurrence relations and differential equations. In particular, the normalised factorial moments of the randomised ensembles are precisely related to the moments of the corresponding equilibrium measures. We also briefly outline how these results can be interpreted as Cauchy-type identities for certain Schur measures.

Sorting networks, staircase Young tableaux and last passage percolation

We present new combinatorial and probabilistic identities relating three random processes: the oriented swap process on $n$ particles, the corner growth process, and the last passage percolation model. We prove one of the probabilistic identities, relating a random vector of last passage percolation times to its dual, using the duality between the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth and Burge correspondences. A second probabilistic identity, relating those two vectors to a vector of "last swap times" in the oriented swap process, is conjectural. We give a computer-assisted proof of this identity for $n\le 6$ after first reformulating it as a purely combinatorial identity, and discuss its relation to the Edelman-Greene correspondence.

Volume of the set of LOCC-convertible quantum states

The class of quantum operations known as Local Operations and Classical Communication (LOCC) induces a partial ordering on quantum states. We present the results of systematic numerical computations related to the volume (with respect to the unitarily invariant measure) of the set of LOCC-convertible bipartite pure states, where the ordering is characterised by an algebraic relation known as majorization. The numerical results, which exploit a tridiagonal model of random matrices, provide quantitative evidence that the proportion of LOCC-convertible pairs vanishes in the limit of large dimension, and therefore support a previous conjecture by Nielsen. In particular, we show that the problem is equivalent to the persistence of a non-Markovian stochastic process and the proportion of LOCC-convertible pairs decays algebraically with a nontrivial persistence exponent. We extend this analysis by investigating the distribution of the maximal success probability of LOCC-conversions. We show a dichotomy in behaviour between balanced and unbalanced bipartitions. In the latter case the asymptotics is somehow surprising: in the limit of large dimensions, for the overwhelming majority of pairs of states a perfect LOCC-conversion is not possible; nevertheless, for most states there exist local strategies that succeed in achieving the conversion with a probability arbitrarily close to one. We present strong evidences of a universal scaling limit for the maximal probability of successful LOCC-conversions and we suggest a connection with the typical fluctuations of the smallest eigenvalue of Wishart random matrices.

A shortcut through the Coulomb gas method for spectral linear statistics on random matrices

In the last decade, spectral linear statistics on large dimensional random matrices have attracted significant attention. Within the physics community, a privileged role has been played by invariant matrix ensembles for which a two dimensional Coulomb gas analogy is available. We present a critical revision of the Coulomb gas method in Random Matrix Theory (RMT) borrowing language and tools from Large Deviations Theory. This allows us to formalize an equivalent, but more effective and quicker route toward RMT free energy calculations. Moreover, we argue that this more modern viewpoint is likely to shed further light on the interesting issues of weak phase transitions and evaporation phenomena recently observed in RMT.

Correlators for the Wigner-Smith time-delay matrix of chaotic cavities

We study the Wigner-Smith time-delay matrix $Q$ of a ballistic quantum dot supporting $N$ scattering channels. We compute the $v$-point correlators of the power traces $\mathrm{Tr} Q^κ$ for arbitrary $v\geq1$ at leading order for large $N$ using techniques from the random matrix theory approach to quantum chromodynamics. We conjecture that the cumulants of the $\mathrm{Tr} Q^κ$'s are integer-valued at leading order in $N$ and include a MATHEMATICA code that computes their generating functions recursively.

Large deviations of radial statistics in the two-dimensional one-component plasma

The two-dimensional one-component plasma is an ubiquitous model for several vortex systems. For special values of the coupling constant $βq^2$ (where $q$ is the particles charge and $β$ the inverse temperature), the model also corresponds to the eigenvalues distribution of normal matrix models. Several features of the system are discussed in the limit of large number $N$ of particles for generic values of the coupling constant. We show that the statistics of a class of radial observables produces a rich phase diagram, and their asymptotic behaviour in terms of large deviation functions is calculated explicitly, including next-to-leading terms up to order 1/N. We demonstrate a split-off phenomenon associated to atypical fluctuations of the edge density profile. We also show explicitly that a failure of the fluid phase assumption of the plasma can break a genuine $1/N$-expansion of the free energy. Our findings are corroborated by numerical comparisons with exact finite-N formulae valid for $βq^2=2$.

Large deviations of spread measures for Gaussian matrices

For a large $n\times m$ Gaussian matrix, we compute the joint statistics, including large deviation tails, of generalized and total variance - the scaled log-determinant $H$ and trace $T$ of the corresponding $n\times n$ covariance matrix. Using a Coulomb gas technique, we find that the Laplace transform of their joint distribution $\mathcal{P}_n(h,t)$ decays for large $n,m$ (with $c=m/n\geq 1$ fixed) as $\hat{\mathcal{P}}_n(s,w)\approx \exp\left(-βn^2 J(s,w)\right)$, where $β$ is the Dyson index of the ensemble and $J(s,w)$ is a $β$-independent large deviation function, which we compute exactly for any $c$. The corresponding large deviation functions in real space are worked out and checked with extensive numerical simulations. The results are complemented with a finite $n,m$ treatment based on the Laguerre-Selberg integral. The statistics of atypically small log-determinants is shown to be driven by the split-off of the smallest eigenvalue, leading to an abrupt change in the large deviation speed.

Large-$N$ expansion for the time-delay matrix of ballistic chaotic cavities

We consider the $1/N$-expansion of the moments of the proper delay times for a ballistic chaotic cavity supporting $N$ scattering channels. In the random matrix approach, these moments correspond to traces of negative powers of Wishart matrices. For systems with and without broken time reversal symmetry (Dyson indices $β=1$ and $β=2$) we obtain a recursion relation, which efficiently generates the coefficients of the $1/N$-expansion of the moments. The integrality of these coefficients and their possible diagrammatic interpretation is discussed.

Universal covariance formula for linear statistics on random matrices

We derive an analytical formula for the covariance $\mathrm{Cov}(A,B)$ of two smooth linear statistics $A=\sum_i a(λ_i)$ and $B=\sum_i b(λ_i)$ to leading order for $N\to\infty$, where $\{λ_i\}$ are the $N$ real eigenvalues of a general one-cut random-matrix model with Dyson index $β$. The formula, carrying the universal $1/β$ prefactor, depends on the random-matrix ensemble only through the edge points $[λ_-,λ_+]$ of the limiting spectral density. For $A=B$, we recover in some special cases the classical variance formulas by Beenakker and Dyson-Mehta, clarifying the respective ranges of applicability. Some choices of $a(x)$ and $b(x)$ lead to a striking \emph{decorrelation} of the corresponding linear statistics. We provide two applications - the joint statistics of conductance and shot noise in ideal chaotic cavities, and some new fluctuation relations for traces of powers of random matrices.

A unified fluctuation formula for one-cut $β$-ensembles of random matrices

Using a Coulomb gas approach, we compute the generating function of the covariances of power traces for one-cut $β$-ensembles of random matrices in the limit of large matrix size. This formula depends only on the support of the spectral density, and is therefore universal for a large class of models. This allows us to derive a closed-form expression for the limiting covariances of an arbitrary one-cut $β$-ensemble. As particular cases of the main result we consider the classical $β$-Gaussian, $β$-Wishart and $β$-Jacobi ensembles, for which we derive previously available results as well as new ones within a unified simple framework. We also discuss the connections between the problem of trace fluctuations for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and the enumeration of planar maps.

Fluctuations in the two-dimensional one-component plasma and associated fourth-order phase transition

We study the distribution of the mean radial displacement of charges of a 2D one-component plasma in the thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$ at finite temperature $β>0$. We compute explicitly the large deviation functions showing the emergence of a fourth-order phase transition as a consequence of a change of topology in the plasma distribution. This weak phase transition occurs exactly at the ground state of the plasma. These results have been compared with the integrable case (finite $N$) of plasma parameter $βq^2=2$. In this case the problem can be mapped to the stationary properties of 2D Dyson Brownian particles and to a non-Hermitian matrix model.

Joint statistics of quantum transport in chaotic cavities

We study the joint statistics of conductance $G$ and shot noise $P$ in chaotic cavities supporting a large number $N$ of open electronic channels in the two attached leads. We determine the full phase diagram in the $(G,P)$ plane, employing a Coulomb gas technique on the joint density of transmission eigenvalues, as dictated by Random Matrix Theory. We find that in the region of typical fluctuations, conductance and shot noise are uncorrelated and jointly Gaussian, and away from it they fluctuate according to a different joint rate function in each phase of the $(G,P)$ plane. Different functional forms of the rate function in different regions emerge as a direct consequence of third order phase transitions in the associated Coulomb gas problem.

Statistical distribution of the Wigner-Smith time-delay matrix moments for chaotic cavities

We derive the joint distribution of the moments $\mathrm{Tr}\, Q^κ$ ($κ\geq0$) of the Wigner-Smith matrix for a chaotic cavity supporting a large number of scattering channels $n$. This distribution turns out to be asymptotically Gaussian, and we compute explicitly averages and covariances. The results are in a compact form and have been verified numerically. The general methodology of proof and computations has a wide range of applications.

Typical Entanglement

Let a pure state ψbe chosen randomly in an NM-dimensional Hilbert space, and consider the reduced density matrix ρof an N-dimensional subsystem. The bipartite entanglement properties of ψare encoded in the spectrum of ρ. By means of a saddle point method and using a "Coulomb gas" model for the eigenvalues, we obtain the typical spectrum of reduced density matrices. We consider the cases of an unbiased ensemble of pure states and of a fixed value of the purity. We finally obtain the eigenvalue distribution by using a statistical mechanics approach based on the introduction of a partition function.
