The APEX Large CO Heterodyne Orion Legacy Survey (ALCOHOLS). I. Survey overview

The Orion molecular cloud complex harbours the nearest GMCs and site of high-mass star formation. Its YSO populations are thoroughly characterized. The region is therefore a prime target for the study of star formation. Here, we verify the performance of the SuperCAM 64 pixel heterodyne array on APEX. We give a descriptive overview of a set of wide-field CO(3-2) spectral cubes obtained towards the Orion GMC complex, aimed at characterizing the dynamics and structure of the extended molecular gas in diverse regions of the clouds, ranging from very active sites of clustered star formation in Orion B to comparatively quiet regions in southern Orion A. We present a 2.7 square degree (130pc$^2$) mapping survey in the CO(3-2) transition, obtained using SuperCAM on APEX at an angular resolution of 19'' (7600AU or 0.037pc at a distance of 400pc), covering L1622, NGC2071, NGC2068, OriB9, NGC2024, and NGC2023 in Orion B, and the southern part of the L1641 cloud in Orion A. We describe CO integrated emission and line moment maps and position-velocity diagrams and discuss a few sub-regions in some detail. Evidence for expanding bubbles is seen with lines splitting into double components, most prominently in NGC2024, where we argue that the bulk of the molecular gas is in the foreground of the HII region. High CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) line ratios reveal warm CO along the western edge of Orion B in the NGC2023/NGC2024 region facing the IC434 HII region. Multiple, well separated radial velocity components seen in L1641-S suggest that it consists of a sequence of clouds at increasingly larger distances. We find a small, spherical cloud - the 'Cow Nebula' globule - north of NGC2071. We trace high velocity line wings for the NGC2071-IR outflow and the NGC2024 CO jet. The protostellar dust core FIR4 (rather than FIR5) is the true driving source of the NGC2024 monopolar outflow.

ALMA-IMF I -- Investigating the origin of stellar masses: Introduction to the Large Program and first results

The ALMA-IMF Large Program imaged a total noncontiguous area of 53pc2, covering 15 extreme, nearby protoclusters of the Milky Way. They were selected to span relevant early protocluster evolutionary stages. Our 1.3mm and 3mm observations provide continuum images that are homogeneously sensitive to point-like cores with masses of 0.2 and 0.6Msun, respectively, with a matched spatial resolution of 2000au. We also detect lines that probe the protocluster structure, kinematics, chemistry, and feedback over scales from clouds to filaments to cores. We classify ALMA-IMF protoclusters as Young, Intermediate, or Evolved based on the amount of dense gas in the cloud that has potentially been impacted by HII regions. The ALMA-IMF catalog contains 700 cores that span a mass range of 0.15-250Msun at a typical size of 2100au. We show that this core sample has no significant distance bias and can be used to build core mass functions at similar physical scales. Significant gas motions, which we highlight here in the G353.41 region, are traced down to core scales and can be used to look for inflowing gas streamers and to quantify the impact of the possible associated core mass growth on the shape of the CMF with time. Our first analysis does not reveal any significant evolution of the matter concentration from clouds to cores or from the youngest to more evolved protoclusters, indicating that cloud dynamical evolution and stellar feedback have for the moment only had a slight effect on the structure of high-density gas in our sample. Furthermore, the first-look analysis of the line richness toward bright cores indicates that the survey encompasses several tens of hot cores, of which we highlight the most massive in the G351.77 cloud. Their homogeneous characterization can be used to constrain the emerging molecular complexity in protostars of high to intermediate masses.

High-order Harmonic Generation and its Unconventional Scaling Law in the Mott-insulating $\rm{Ca_2RuO_4}$

Competition and cooperation among orders is at the heart of many-body physics in strongly correlated materials and leads to their rich physical properties. It is crucial to investigate what impact many-body physics has on extreme nonlinear optical phenomena, with the possibility of controlling material properties by light. However, the effect of competing orders and electron-electron correlations on highly nonlinear optical phenomena has not yet been experimentally clarified. Here, we investigated high-order harmonic generation from the Mott-insulating phase of Ca2RuO4. Changing the gap energy in Ca2RuO4 as a function of temperature, we observed a strong enhancement of high order harmonic generation at 50 K, increasing up to several hundred times compared to room temperature. We discovered that this enhancement can be well-reproduced by an empirical scaling law that depends only on the material gap energy and photon emission energy. Such scaling law cannot be explained by a simple two-band model under the single electron approximation. Our results suggest that the highly nonlinear optical response of strongly correlated materials is deeply coupled to their electron-electron correlations and resultant many-body electronic structure.

Catalog of dense cores in the Orion A giant molecular cloud

We present Orion A giant molecular cloud core catalogs, which are based on 1.1 mm map with an angular resolution of 36 arcsec (sim 0.07 pc) and C18O (1-0) data with an angular resolution of 26.4 arcsec (sim 0.05 pc). We have cataloged 619 dust cores in the 1.1 mm map using the Clumpfind method. The ranges of the radius, mass, and density of these cores are estimated to be 0.01 - 0.20 pc, 0.6 - 1.2 times 10^2 Msun, and 0.3 times 10^4 - 9.2 times 10^6 cm^{-3}, respectively. We have identified 235 cores from the C18O data. The ranges of the radius, velocity width, LTE mass, and density are 0.13 -- 0.34 pc, 0.31 - 1.31 km s^{-1}, 1.0 - 61.8 Msun, and (0.8 - 17.5) times 10^3 cm^{-3}, respectively. From the comparison of the spatial distributions between the dust and C18O cores, four types of spatial relations were revealed: (1) the peak positions of the dust and C18O cores agree with each other (32.4% of the C18O cores), (2) two or more C18O cores are distributed around the peak position of one dust core (10.8% of the C18O cores), (3) 56.8% of the C18O cores are not associated with any dust cores, and (4) 69.3% of the dust cores are not associated with any C18O cores. The data sets and analysis are public.

Current-Induced Gap Suppression in the Mott Insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$

We present nonlinear conduction phenomena in the Mott insulator Ca2RuO4 investigated with a proper evaluation of self-heating effects. By utilizing a non-contact infrared thermometer, the sample temperature was accurately determined even in the presence of large Joule heating. We find that the resistivity continuously decreases with currents under an isothermal environment. The nonlinearity and the resulting negative differential resistance occurs at relatively low current range, incompatible with conventional mechanisms such as hot electron or impact ionization. We propose a possible current-induced gap suppression scenario, which is also discussed in non-equilibrium superconducting state or charge-ordered insulator.

The Rotating Outflow, Envelope and Disk in Class-0/I protostar [BHB2007] 11 in the Pipe Nebula

We present the results of observations toward a low-mass Class-0/I protostar, [BHB2007]#11 (afterwards B59#11) at the nearby (d=130 pc) star forming region, Barnard 59 (B59) in the Pipe Nebula with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10 m telescope (~22" resolution) in CO(3--2), HCO+, H13CO+(4--3), and 1.1 mm dust-continuum emissions. We also show Submillimeter Array (SMA) data in 12CO, 13CO, C18O(2--1), and 1.3 mm dust-continuum emissions with ~5" resolution. From ASTE CO(3--2) observations, we found that B59#11 is blowing a collimated outflow whose axis lies almost on the plane of the sky. The outflow traces well a cavity-like structure seen in the 1.1 mm dust-continuum emission. The results of SMA 13CO and C18O(2--1) observations have revealed that a compact and elongated structure of dense gas is associated with B59#11, which is oriented perpendicular to the outflow axis. There is a compact dust condensation with a size of 350x180 AU seen in the SMA 1.3 mm continuum map, and the direction of its major axis is almost the same as that of the dense gas elongation. The distributions of 13CO and C18O emission also show the velocity gradients along their major axes, which are considered to arise from the envelope/disk rotation. From the detailed analysis of the SMA data, we infer that B59#11 is surrounded by a Keplerian disk with a size of less than 350 AU. In addition, the SMA CO(2--1) image shows a velocity gradient in the outflow along the same direction as that of the dense gas rotation. We suggest that this velocity gradient shows a rotation of the outflow.

Quantum Oscillations in the High Pressure Metallic State of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$

We present evidence for quantum oscillations in the pressure-induced metallic state of the 4$d$ layered perovskite Ca$_2$RuO$_4$. A complicated oscillation spectrum is observed, which is both temperature and field dependent, with unusually light cyclotron masses in the range of $m^*/m_e$ $\sim$ 0.6 -- 3, suggesting that the pressure-induced metallic state is a weakly correlated Fermi liquid. We compare our observations to band structure calculations within the local spin density approximation, and conclude that some features of the spectrum are a result of non-linear spin splitting effects.

Near-Infrared Imaging Polarimetry Toward Serpens South: Revealing the Importance of the Magnetic Field

The Serpens South embedded cluster, which is located at the constricted part in a long filamentary infrared dark cloud, is believed to be in very early stage of cluster formation. We present results of near-infrared (JHKs) polarization observations toward the filamentary cloud. Our polarization measurements of near-infrared point sources indicate a well-ordered global magnetic field that is perpendicular to the main filament, implying that the magnetic field is likely to have controlled the formation of the main filament. On the other hand, the sub-filaments, which converge on the central part of the cluster, tend to run along the magnetic field. The global magnetic field appears to be curved in the southern part of the main filament. Such morphology is consistent with the idea that the global magnetic field is distorted by gravitational contraction along the main filament toward the northern part that contains larger mass. Applying the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, the magnetic field strength is roughly estimated to be a few x 100 microgauss, suggesting that the filamentary cloud is close to magnetically critical as a whole.

Control of the ferroelectricity in metastable state for orthorhombic $R$MnO$_{3}$ crystals

We have investigated orthorhombic $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($R$=(Gd$_{1-y}$Tb$_{y}$)) crystals near the phase boundary between the paraelectric $A$-type-antiferromagnetic (AF) phase (PA) and the ferroelectric transverse-spiral-AF one (FS). The spiral AF structure breaks inversion symmetry and induces the ferroelectric polarization through the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We have found that the PA-FS phase boundary is located at around 0.15$<$$y$$<$0.2. In $y$=0.15 compound, PA and FS phases appear in cooling scan, while FS is not observed in warming scan. This result suggests that FS observed in $y$=0.15 is a metastable state arising from the competition between PA and FS. Furthermore, we demonstrate the phase control between these competing phases by the application of the external magnetic field and external quasihydrostatic pressure.

Evidence for suppressed metallicity on the surface of La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4

Hard X-ray Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of copper core electronic states, with a probing depth of $\sim$60 Å, is used to show that the Zhang-Rice singlet feature is present in La$_2$CuO$_4$ but is absent in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. Hole- and electron doping in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO) result in new well-screened features which are missing in soft X-ray PES. Impurity Anderson model calculations establish metallic screening as its origin, which is strongly suppressed within 15 $\textÅ$ of the surface. Complemented with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the small chemical-potential shift in core levels ($\sim0.2$ eV) are shown to be consistent with modifications of valence and conduction band states spanning the band gap ($\sim1$ eV) upon hole- and electron-doping in LSCO and NCCO.
