Controlling chaos in wave-particle interactions

We analyze the behavior of a relativistic particle moving under the influence of a uniform magnetic field and a stationary electrostatic wave. We work with a set of pulsed waves that allows us to obtain an exact map for the system. We also use a method of control for near-integrable Hamiltonians that consists in the addition of a small and simple control term to the system. This control term creates invariant tori in phase space that prevent chaos from spreading to large regions and make the controlled dynamics more regular. We show numerically that the control term just slightly modifies the system but is able to drastically reduce chaos with a low additional cost of energy. Moreover, we discuss how the control of chaos and the consequent recovery of regular trajectories in phase space are useful to improve regular particle acceleration.

Parton distributions in the presence of target mass corrections

We study the consistency of parton distribution functions in the presence of target mass corrections (TMCs) at low Q^2. We review the standard operator product expansion derivation of TMCs in both x and moment space, and present the results in closed form for all unpolarized structure functions and their moments. To avoid the unphysical region at x > 1 in the standard TMC analysis, we propose an expansion of the target mass corrected structure functions order by order in M^2/Q^2, and assess the convergence properties of the resulting forms numerically.

Standard map in magnetized relativistic systems: fixed points and regular acceleration

We investigate the concept of a standard map for the interaction of relativistic particles and electrostatic waves of arbitrary amplitudes, under the action of external magnetic fields. The map is adequate for physical settings where waves and particles interact impulsively, and allows for a series of analytical result to be exactly obtained. Unlike the traditional form of the standard map, the present map is nonlinear in the wave amplitude and displays a series of peculiar properties. Among these properties we discuss the relation involving fixed points of the maps and accelerator regimes.

Thermodynamics of Quasi-Particles at Finite Chemical Potential

We present in this work a generalization of the solution of Gorenstein and Yang to the inconsistency problem of thermodynamics for systems of quasi-particles whose masses depend on both the temperature and the chemical potential. We work out several solutions for an interacting system of quarks and gluons and show that there is only one type of solution that reproduce both perturbative and lattice QCD.

Thermodynamics of Quasi-Particles

We present in this work a generalization of the solution of Gorenstein and Yang for a consistent thermodynamics for systems with a temperature dependent Hamiltonian. We show that there is a large class of solutions, work out three particular ones, and discuss their physical relevance. We apply the particular solutions for an ideal gas of quasi-gluons, and compare the calculation to lattice and perturbative QCD results.

Decoupling heavy particles simultaneously

The renormalization group is extended to cases where several heavy particles are decoupled at the same time. This involves large logarithms which are scale-invariant and so cannot be eliminated by a change of renormalization scheme. A set of scale-invariant running couplings, one for each heavy particle, is constructed without reference to intermediate thresholds. The entire heavy-quark correction to the axial charge of the weak neutral current is derived to next-to-leading order, and checked in leading order by evaluating diagrams explicitly. The mechanism for cancelling contributions from the top and bottom quarks in the equal-mass limit is surprisingly non-trivial.

Running couplings for the simultaneous decoupling of heavy quarks

Scale-invariant running couplings are constructed for several quarks being decoupled together, without reference to intermediate thresholds. Large-momentum scales can also be included. The result is a multi-scale generalization of the renormalization group applicable to any order. Inconsistencies in the usual decoupling procedure with a single running coupling can then be avoided, e.g. when cancelling anomalous corrections from t,b quarks to the axial charge of the proton.

Target mass corrections revisited

We propose a new implementation of target mass corrections to nucleon structure functions which, unlike existing treatments, has the correct kinematic threshold behavior at finite Q^2 in the x -> 1 limit. We illustrate the differences between the new approach and existing prescriptions by considering specific examples for the F_2 and F_L structure functions, and discuss the broader implications of our results, which call into question the notion of universal parton distribution at finite Q^2.

Effect of bound nucleon internal structure change on nuclear structure functions

Effect of bound nucleon internal structure change on nuclear structure functions is investigated based on local quark-hadron duality. The bound nucleon structure functions calculated for charged-lepton and (anti)neutrino scattering are all enhanced in symmetric nuclear matter at large Bjorken-$x$ ($x \agt 0.85$) relative to those in a free nucleon. This implies that a part of the enhancement observed in the nuclear structure function $F_2$ (in the resonance region) at large Bjorken-$x$ (the EMC effect) is due to the effect of the bound nucleon internal structure change. However, the $x$ dependence for the charged-lepton and (anti)neutrino scattering is different. The former [latter] is enhanced [quenched] in the region $0.8 \alt x \alt 0.9$ [$0.7 \alt x \alt 0.85$] due to the difference of the contribution from axial vector form factor. Because of these differences charge symmetry breaking in parton distributions will be enhanced in nuclei.

The Temperature Dependence of the QCD Running Coupling

We study the running of the QCD coupling with the momentum squared ($Q^2$) and the temperature scales in the high temperature limit ($T > T_{c}$), using a mass dependent renormalization scheme to build the Renormalization Group Equations. The approach used guaranty gauge invariance, through the use of the Hard Thermal Loop approximation, and independence of the vertex chosen to renormalize the coupling. In general, the dependence of the coupling with the temperature is not logarithmical, although in the region $Q^2 \sim T^2$ the logarithm approximation is reasonable. Finally, as known from Debye screening, color charge is screened in the coupling. The number of flavors, however, is anti-screened.

Matching functions for heavy particles

We introduce matching functions as a means of summing heavy-quark logarithms to any order. Our analysis is based on Witten's approach, where heavy quarks are decoupled one at a time in a mass-independent renormalization scheme. The outcome is a generalization of the matching conditions of Bernreuther and Wetzel: we show how to derive closed formulas for summed logarithms to any order, and present explicit expressions for leading order and next-to-leading order contributions. The decoupling of heavy quarks in theories lacking asymptotic freedom is also considered.

A Constraint on the x Dependence of the Light Antiquarks Ratio

We perform a careful study on the effect of the Pauli blocking to the light antiquark structure of the proton sea. We develop the formal expressions for the antiquark distributions, highlighting the role played by quark statistics and the vacuum structure. Ratios involving the antiquarks are calculated. In particular, it is found that $Δ\bar{d}(x)/Δ\bar{u}(x)$ should be negative and x independent.

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking in the Sea of the Nucleon

We derive the non-analytic chiral behavior of the flavor asymmetry dbar - ubar. Such behavior is a unique characteristic of Goldstone boson loops in chiral theories, including QCD, and establishes the unambiguous role played by the Goldstone boson cloud in the sea of the proton. Generalizing the results to the SU(3) sector, we show that strange chiral loops require that the s - sbar distribution be non-zero.

A New Analysis of Charge Symmetry Violation in Parton Distributions

To date, the strongest indication of charge symmetry violation in parton distributions has been obtained by comparing the $F_2$ structure functions from CCFR neutrino data and NMC muon data. We show that in order to make precise tests of charge symmetry with the neutrino data, two conditions must be satisfied. First, the nuclear shadowing calculations must be made explicitly for neutrinos, not simply taken from muon data on nuclei. Second, the contribution of strange and charm quarks should be calculated explicitly using next-to-leading order [NLO] QCD, and the ``slow rescaling'' charm threshold correction should not be applied to the neutrino data. When these criteria are satisfied, the comparison is consistent with charge symmetry within the experimental errors and the present uncertainty in the strange quark distribution of the nucleon.

Charm in the Nucleon

A next-to-leading order analysis of inelastic electroproduction of charm is performed using an interpolating scheme which maps smoothly onto massless QCD evolution at large Q^2 and photon-gluon fusion at small Q^2. In contrast with earlier analyses, this scheme allows the inclusion of quark and target mass effects and heavy quark thresholds, as well as possible non-perturbative, or intrinsic, charm contributions. We find no conclusive evidence in favor of an intrinsic charm component in the nucleon, although several data points which disagree with perturbative QCD expectations will need to be checked by future experiments.

Meson Cloud and SU(3) Symmetry Breaking in Parton Distributions

We apply the Meson Cloud Model to the calculation of nonsinglet parton distributions in the nucleon sea, including the octet and the decuplet cloud baryon contributions. We give special attention to the differences between nonstrange and strange sea quarks, trying to identify possible sources of SU(3) flavor breaking. A analysis in terms of the $κ$ parameter is presented, and we find that the existing SU(3) flavor asymmetry in the nucleon sea can be quantitatively explained by the meson cloud. We also consider the $Σ^+$ baryon, finding similar conclusions.

Heavy Quarks in Polarized Structure Functions

Quark mass effects are included in the calculation of polarized structure functions. In particular, the validity of fixed order perturbation theory and of massless evolution is studied in the framework of heavy quarks structure functions. The polarized version of the ACOT and MRRS interpolating schemes for the evolution of massive quarks distributions is also developed and studied. The different behaviours of the various approaches in $x$ and $Q^2$ are shown.

Spin Dependent Parton Distributions in a Bound Nucleon

The determination of the spin distribution functions for the neutron requires an understanding of the changes induced by a nuclear medium. We present the first estimates of the changes induced in the spin-dependent, valence parton distributions of the proton and neutron bound in $^3$He and $^6$Li. For $^3$He the result is quite reassuring, in that the off-shell correction to $g_{1n}$ is very small. On the other hand, in $^6$Li the corrections to the spin distributions in the bound proton are sufficiently large that they should be taken into account if one aims for a precision of better than 10%. We provide a simple parametrization of the off-shell changes in the valence spin distributions of $^3$He and $^6$Li, which can be used with any conventional estimate of nuclear binding and Fermi motion corrections.

A Study of Structure Functions for the Bag Beyond Leading Order

There has recently been surprising progress in understanding the spin and flavor dependence of deep inelastic structure functions in terms of the same physics needed in the simple quark models used for hadronic spectroscopy. However, the corresponding scale is usually very low, casting doubt on the use of leading order $QCD$ evolution. We show that the conclusions are not significantly altered if one goes to next-to-leading order. In particular, the excellent agreement with unpolarized and polarized valence quark distributions is retained.

The Role of Strange and Charm Quarks in the Nucleon Spin Structure Function

We perform an analysis of the relation between the factorization scale and the masses of the quarks in the calculation of the hard gluon coefficient in polarized deep inelastic scattering. Particular attention is paid to the role of strange and charm quarks at finite momentum transfer. It is found that for the momentum transfer of the present experiments, the contribution from the charm quark is significant.
