Hyperon electromagnetic timelike elastic form factors at large $q^2$

We present estimates of the hyperon elastic form factors for the baryon octet and the $Ω^-$ baryon for large four-momentum transfer squared, $q^2$, in the timelike region ($q^2>0$). Experimentally, those form factors can be extracted from the $e^+ e^- \to B \bar B$ and $p \bar p \to B \bar B$ processes, where $B$ stands for a general baryon. Our results are based on calculations of the elastic electromagnetic form factors in the spacelike region ($Q^2 = - q^2 > 0$) within a covariant quark model. To connect the results in the spacelike region to those in the timelike region, we use asymptotic relations between the two regions which are constraints derived from analyticity and unitarity. We calculate the effective form factors $|G(q^2)|$ and compare them with the integrated cross section data $σ_{\rm Born} (q^2)$ from BaBar, BES III, and CLEO. The available data are at the moment restricted to $Λ$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^-$, $Ξ^-$, $Ξ^0$, and $Ω^-$ as well as to $e^+ e^- \to Λ\bar Σ^0 $ and $e^+ e^- \to Σ^0 \bar Λ$ reactions. Our results provide useful reference for future experiments and seem to indicate that the present data are still in the non-perturbative QCD region, while the onset for the asymptotic constraints from analyticity and unitarity happens much before the region of the perturbative QCD falloff of the form factors.

$Φ$ and $J/Ψ$ Mesons in Cold Nuclear Matter

We present $Φ$- and $J/Ψ$--nuclear bound state energies and absorption widths for some selected nuclei, using potentials in the local density approximation computed from an effective Lagrangian approach combined with the quark-meson coupling model. Our results suggest that these mesons should form bound states with all the nuclei considered provided that these mesons are produced in nearly recoilless kinematics.

Effects of medium modifications of nucleon form factors on neutrino scattering in dense matter

Effects of the in-medium modifications of nucleon form factors on neutrino interaction in dense matter are presented by considering both the weak and electromagnetic interactions of neutrinos with the constituents of the matter. A relativistic mean field and the quark-meson coupling models are respectively adopted for the effective nucleon mass and in-medium nucleon form factors. We calculate the cross-section of neutrino scattering as well as the neutrino mean free path. We found the cross sections of neutrino scattering in cold nuclear medium decreases when the in-medium modifications of the nucleon weak and electromagnetic form factors are taken into account. This reduction results in the enhancement of the neutrino mean free path, in particular at the baryon density of around a few times of the normal nuclear matter density.

Hadron properties in a nuclear medium and effective nuclear force from quarks: the quark-meson coupling model

We give a short review of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, the quark-based model of finite nuclei and hadron interactions in a nuclear medium, highlighting on the relationship with the Skyrme effective nuclear forces. The model is based on a mean field description of nonoverlapping nucleon MIT bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of Lorentz-scalar-isoscalar, Lorentz-vector-isoscalar, and Lorentz-vector-isovector meson fields directly coupled to the light quarks up and down. In conventional nuclear physics the Skyrme effective forces are very popular, but, there is no satisfactory interpretation of the parameters appearing in the Skyrme forces. Comparing a many-body Hamiltonian generated by the QMC model in the zero-range limit with that of the Skyrme force, it is possible to obtain a remarkable agreement between the Skyrme force and the QMC effective interaction. Furthermore, it is shown that 3-body and higher order N-body forces are naturally included in the QMC-generated effective interaction.

Pion structure in a nuclear medium

The structure and electroweak properties of the pion in symmetric nuclear matter are presented in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The pion is described as a bound state of a dressed quark-antiquark pair governed by the Bethe-Salpeter equation. For the in-medium current-light-quark properties we use the quark-meson coupling model, which describes successfully the properties of hadron in a nuclear medium. We found that the light-quark condensates, the pion decay constant and pion-quark coupling constant decrease with increasing nuclear matter density. We then predict the modifications of the charge radius of the charged pion in nuclear matter.

${\bar D}D$ meson pair production in antiproton-nucleus collisions

We study the $\bar D D$ (${\bar D}^0 D^0$ and $D^-D^+$) charm meson pair production in antiproton (${\bar p}$) induced reactions on nuclei at beam energies ranging from threshold to several GeV. Our model is based on an effective Lagrangian approach that has only the baryon-meson degrees of freedom and involves the physical hadron masses. The reaction proceeds via the $t$-channel exchanges of $Λ_c^+$, $Σ_c^+$, and $Σ_c^{++}$ baryons in the initial collision of the antiproton with one of the protons of the target nucleus. The medium effects on the exchanged baryons are included by incorporating in the corresponding propagators, the effective charm baryon masses calculated within a quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. The wave functions of the bound proton have been determined within the QMC model as well as in a phenomenological model where they are obtained by solving the Dirac equation with appropriate scalar and vector potentials. The initial- and final-state distortion effects have been approximated by using an eikonal approximation-based procedure. Detailed numerical results are presented for total and double differential cross sections for the ${\bar D}^0 D^0$ and $D^-D^+$ production reactions on $^{16}$O and $^{90}$Zr targets. It is noticed that at ${\bar p}$ beam momenta of interest to the ${\bar P}ANDA$ experiment, medium effects lead to noticeable enhancements in the charm meson production cross sections.

Axial form factors of the octet baryons in a covariant quark model

We study the weak interaction axial form factors of the octet baryons, within the covariant spectator quark model, focusing on the dependence of four-momentum transfer squared, Q^2. In our model the axial form factors G_A(Q^2) (axial-vector form factor) and G_P(Q^2) (induced pseudoscalar form factor), are calculated based on the constituent quark axial form factors and the octet baryon wave functions. The quark axial current is parametrized by the two constituent quark form factors, the axial-vector form factor g_A^q(Q^2), and the induced pseudoscalar form factor g_P^q(Q^2). The baryon wave functions are composed of a dominant S-state and a P-state mixture for the relative angular momentum of the quarks. First, we study in detail the nucleon case. We assume that the quark axial-vector form factor g_A^q(Q^2) has the same function form as that of the quark electromagnetic isovector form factor. The remaining parameters of the model, the P-state mixture and the Q^2-dependence of g_P^q(Q^2), are determined by a fit to the nucleon axial form factor data obtained by lattice QCD simulations with large pion masses. In this lattice QCD regime the meson cloud effects are small, and the physics associated with the valence quarks can be better calibrated. Once the valence quark model is calibrated, we extend the model to the physical regime, and use the low Q^2 experimental data to estimate the meson cloud contributions for G_A(Q^2) and G_P(Q^2). Using the calibrated quark axial form factors, and the generalization of the nucleon wave function for the other octet baryon members, we make predictions for all the possible weak interaction axial form factors G_A(Q^2) and G_P(Q^2) of the octet baryons. The results are compared with the corresponding experimental data for G_A(0), and with the estimates of baryon-meson models based on SU(6) symmetry.

Hadronic molecules with a ${\bar{D}}$ meson in a medium

We study the effect of a hot and dense medium on the binding energy of hadronic molecules with open-charm mesons. We focus on a recent chiral quark-model-based prediction of a molecular state in the $N \bar D$ system. We analyze how the two-body thresholds and the hadron-hadron interactions are modified when quark and meson masses and quark-meson couplings change in a function of the temperature and baryon density according to predictions of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We find that in some cases the molecular binding is enhanced in medium as compared to their free-space binding. We discuss the consequences of our findings for the search for exotic hadrons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions as well as in the forthcoming facilities FAIR or J-PARC.

Schroedinger Equation in Rotating Frame by using Stochastic Variational Method

We give a pedagogical introduction of the stochastic variational method by considering the quantization of a non-inertial particle system. We show that the effects of fictitious forces are represented in the forms of vector fields which behave analogous to the gauge fields in the electromagnetic interaction. We further discuss that the operator expressions for observables can be defined by applying the stochastic Noether theorem.

Coulomb breakup of $^{37}$Mg and its ground state structure

We calculate Coulomb breakup of the neutron rich nucleus $^{37}$Mg on a Pb target at the beam energy of 244 MeV/nucleon within the framework of a finite range distorted wave Born approximation theory that is extended to include the effects of projectile deformation. In this theory, the breakup amplitude involves the full wave function of the projectile ground state. Calculations have been carried out for the total one-neutron removal cross section $(σ_{-1n})$, the neutron-core relative energy spectrum, the parallel momentum distribution of the core fragment, the valence neutron angular, and energy-angular distributions. The calculated $σ_{-1n}$ has been compared with the recently measured data to put constraints on the spin parity, and the one-neutron separation energy ($S_n$) of the $^{37}$Mg ground state ($^{37}$Mg$_{gs}$). The dependence of $σ_{-1n}$ on the deformation of this state has also been investigated. While a spin parity assignment of $7/2^-$ for the $^{37}$Mg$_{gs}$ is ruled out by our study, neither of the $3/2^-$ and $1/2^+$ assignments can be clearly excluded. Using the spectroscopic factor of one for both the $3/2^-$ and $1/2^+$ configurations and ignoring the projectile deformation effects, the $S_n$ values of $0.35 \pm 0.06$ MeV and $0.50 \pm 0.07$ MeV, respectively, are extracted for the two configurations. However, the extracted $S_n$ is strongly dependent on the spectroscopic factor and the deformation effects of the respective configuration. The narrow parallel momentum distribution of the core fragment and the strong forward peaking of the valence neutron angular distribution suggest a one-neutron halo configuration in either of the $2p_{3/2}$ and $2s_{1/2}$ configurations of the $^{37}$Mg ground state.

Quark-Meson Coupling Model, Nuclear Matter Constraints and Neutron Star Properties

We explore the equation of state for nuclear matter in the quark-meson coupling model, including full Fock terms. The comparison with phenomenological constraints can be used to restrict the few additional parameters appearing in the Fock terms which are not present at Hartree level. Because the model is based upon the in-medium modification of the quark structure of the bound hadrons, it can be applied without additional parameters to include hyperons and to calculate the equation of state of dense matter in beta-equilibrium. This leads naturally to a study of the properties of neutron stars, including their maximum mass, their radii and density profiles.

$γ^\ast N \to N(1710)$ transition at high momentum transfer

In a relativistic quark model we study the structure of the $N(1710)$ resonance, and the $γ^\ast N \to N(1710)$ reaction focusing on the high momentum transfer region, where the valence quark degrees of freedom are expected to be dominant. The $N(1710)$ resonance, a state with spin 1/2 and positive parity ($J^P = \frac{1}{2}^+$), can possibly be interpreted as the second radial excitation of the nucleon, after the Roper, $N(1440)$. We calculate the $γ^\ast N \to N(1710)$ helicity amplitudes, and predict that they are almost identical to those of the $γ^\ast N \to N(1440)$ reaction in the high momentum transfer region. Thus, future measurement of the helicity amplitudes for the $γ^\ast N \to N(1710)$ reaction can give a significant hint on the internal structure of the $N(1710)$ state.

Pion structure in the nuclear medium

Using the light-front pion wave function based on a Bethe-Salpeter amplitude model, we study the properties of the pion in symmetric nuclear matter. The pion model we adopt is well constrained by previous studies to explain the pion properties in vacuum. In order to consistently incorporate the constituent up and down quarks of the pion immersed in symmetric nuclear matter, we use the quark-meson coupling model, which has been widely applied to various hadronic and nuclear phenomena in a nuclear medium with success. We predict the in-medium modifications of the pion lectromagnetic form factor, charge radius and weak decay constant in symmetric nuclear matter.

Stochastic Variational Method as a Quantization Scheme II: Quantization of Electromagnetic Fields

Quantization of electromagnetic fields is investigated in the framework of stochastic variational method (SVM). Differently from the canonical quantization, this method does not require canonical form and quantization can be performed directly from the gauge invariant Lagrangian. The gauge condition is used to choose dynamically independent variables. We verify that, in the Coulomb gauge condition, SVM result is completely equivalent to the traditional result. On the other hand, in the Lorentz gauge condition, SVM quantization can be performed without introducing the indefinite metric. The temporal and longitudinal components of the gauge filed, then, behave as c-number functionals affected by quantum fluctuation through the interaction with charged matter fields. To see further the relation between SVM and the canonical quantization, we quantize the usual gauge Lagrangian with the Fermi term and argue a stochastic process with a negative second order correlation is introduced to reproduce the indefinite metric.

Faddeev-Chiral Unitary Approach to the $K^- d$ scattering length

Our earlier Faddeev three-body study in the $K^-$-deuteron scattering length, $A_{K^-d}$, is revisited here in the light of the recent developments in two fronts: {\it (i)} the improved chiral unitary approach to the theoretical description of the coupled $\Kbar N$ related channels at low energies, and {\it (ii)} the new and improved measurement from SIDDHARTA Collaboration of the strong interaction energy shift and width in the lowest $K^-$-hydrogen atomic level. Those two, in combination, have allowed us to produced a reliable two-body input to the three-body calculation. All available low-energy $K^-p$ observables are well reproduced and predictions for the $\Kbar N$ scattering lengths and amplitudes, $(πΣ)^\circ$ invariant-mass spectra, as well as for $A_{K^-d}$ are put forward and compared with results from other sources. The findings of the present work are expected to be useful in interpreting the forthcoming data from CLAS, HADES, LEPS and SIDDHARTA Collaborations.

Octet Spin Fractions and the Proton Spin Problem

The relatively small fraction of the spin of the proton carried by its quarks presents a major challenge to our understanding of the strong interaction. Traditional efforts to explore this problem have involved new and imaginative experiments and QCD based studies of the nucleon. We propose a new approach to the problem which exploits recent advances in lattice QCD. In particular, we extract values for the spin carried by the quarks in other members of the baryon octet in order to see whether the suppression observed for the proton is a general property or depends significantly on the baryon structure. We compare these results with the values for the spin fractions calculated within a model that includes the effects of confinement, relativity, gluon exchange currents and the meson cloud required by chiral symmetry, finding a very satisfactory level of agreement given the precision currently attainable.

Octet to decuplet electromagnetic transition in a relativistic quark model

We study the octet to decuplet baryon electromagnetic transitions using the covariant spectator quark model, and predict the transition magnetic dipole form factors for those involving the strange baryons. Utilizing SU(3) symmetry, the valence quark contributions are supplemented by the pion cloud dressing based on the one estimated in the $γ^\ast N \to Δ$ reaction. Although the valence quark contributions are dominant in general, the pion cloud effects turn out to be very important to describe the experimental data. We also show that, other mesons besides the pion in particular the kaon, may be relevant for some reactions such as $γ^\ast Σ^+ \to Σ^{*+}$, based on our analysis for the radiative decay widths of the strange decuplet baryons.

Structure and Coulomb dissociation of 23O within the quark-meson coupling model

We study the ground-state structure of nuclei in the vicinity of the one-neutron dripline within the latest version of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model with a particular emphasis on 23O. For this nucleus the model predicts a [22O(0+) + n (2s_{1/2})] configuration for its ground state, with a one neutron separation energy in close agreement with the corresponding experimental value. The wave function describing the valence neutron-core relative motion was then used to calculate the Coulomb dissociation of 23O on a lead target at a beam energy of 422 MeV/nucleon. The experimental neutron-core relative energy spectrum and the total one-neutron removal cross sections are well described by the calculations. The widths of the longitudinal momentum distributions of the 22O fragment are found to be broad, which do not support the formation of a neutron halo in this nucleus.

What is the role of the meson cloud in the $Σ^{*0} \to γΛ$ and $Σ^\ast \to γΣ$ decays?

We study the effect of the meson cloud dressing in the octet baryon to decuplet baryon electromagnetic transitions. Combining the valence quark contributions from the covariant spectator quark model with those of the meson cloud estimated based on the flavor SU(3) cloudy bag model, we calculate the transition magnetic form factors at $Q^2=0$ ($Q^2=-q^2$ and $q$ the four-momentum transfer), and also the decuplet baryon electromagnetic decay widths. The result for the $γ^\ast Λ\to Σ^{\ast 0}$ decay width is in complete agreement with the data, while that for the $γ^\ast Σ^+ \to Σ^{\ast +}$ is underestimated the data by 1.4 standard deviations. This achievement may be regarded as a significant advance in the present theoretical situation.

Covariant spectator quark model description of the $γ^\ast Λ\to Σ^0$ transition

We study the $γ^\ast Λ\to Σ^0$ transition form factors by applying the covariant spectator quark model. Using the parametrization for the baryon core wave functions as well as for the pion cloud dressing obtained in a previous work, we calculate the dependence on the momentum transfer squared, $Q^2$, of the electromagnetic transition form factors. The magnetic form factor is dominated by the valence quark contributions. The final result for the transition magnetic moment, a combination of the quark core and pion cloud effects, turns out to give a value very close to the data. The pion cloud contribution, although small, pulls the final result towards the experimental value The final result, $μ_{ΛΣ^0}= -1.486 μ_N$, is about one and a half standard deviations from the central value in PDG, $μ_{ΛΣ^0}= -1.61 \pm 0.08 μ_N$. Thus, a modest improvement in the statistics of the experiment would permit the confirmation or rejection of the present result. It is also predicted that small but nonzero values for the electric form factor in the finite $Q^2$ region, as a consequence of the pion cloud dressing.

Effect of a $Λ$ impurity in doubly magic nuclei

We study the effect of a $Λ$ hyperon immersed in the doubly magic nuclei, $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, $^{48}$Ca, and $^{208}$Pb, as well as the neutron magic nucleus $^{90}$Zr. For a $Λ$ in the $1s$ and $1p$ states in $^{17}_Λ$O, $^{41}_Λ$Ca, $^{49}_Λ$Ca, $^{91}_Λ$Zr, and $^{209}_Λ$Pb, we compare the single-particle energies and density distributions of the core nucleons with those of the nuclei without the $Λ$, as well as the point proton and neutron radii. A remarkable finding is that the bound $Λ$ induces a significant asymmetry in the proton-neutron density distributions in the core nucleus. This in turn gives rise to an appreciable, iso-vector mean field. As a consequence, the neutrons in the core are more attracted to the center of the nucleus, while the protons are pushed away, in comparison with those in the corresponding nucleus without the $Λ$.

Octet baryon electromagnetic form factors in nuclear medium

We study the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors in nuclear matter using the covariant spectator quark model extended to the nuclear matter regime. The parameters of the model in vacuum are fixed by the study of the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors. In nuclear matter the changes in hadron properties are calculated by including the relevant hadron masses and the modification of the pion-baryon coupling constants calculated in the quark-meson coupling model. In nuclear matter the magnetic form factors of the octet baryons are enhanced in the low $Q^2$ region, while the electric form factors show a more rapid variation with $Q^2$. The results are compared with the modification of the bound proton electromagnetic form factors observed at Jefferson Lab. In addition, the corresponding changes for the bound neutron are predicted.

Production of cascade hypernuclei via the (K-,K+) reaction within a quark-meson coupling model

We study the production of bound cascade hypernuclei via the (K-,K+) reaction on 12C and 28Si targets within a covariant effective Lagrangian model, employing the cascade bound state spinors derived from the latest quark-meson coupling model as well as Dirac single particle wave functions. The K+-cascade production vertex is described by excitation, propagation and decay of Lambda and Sigma resonance states in the initial collision of a K- meson with a target proton in the incident channel. The parameters of the resonance vertices are fixed by describing the available data on total and differential cross sections for the cascade production in elementary (K-,K+) reaction. We find that both the elementary and hypernuclear production cross sections are dominated by the contributions from the Lambda(1520) intermediate resonant state. The 0 degree differential cross sections for the formation of simple s-state cascade particle-hole states peak at a beam momentum around 1.0 GeV/c, with a value in excess of 1 mub.

Valence quark and meson cloud contributions for the gamma* Lambda -> Lambda* and gamma* Sigma0 -> Lambda* reactions

We estimate the valence quark contributions for the gamma* Y -> Lambda* (Y=Lambda, Sigma0) electromagnetic transition form factors. We focus particularly on the case Lambda*=Lambda(1670) as an analog reaction with gamma* N -> N(1535). The results are compared with those obtained from chiral unitary model, where the Lambda* resonance is dynamically generated and thus the electromagnetic structure comes directly from the meson cloud excitation of the baryon ground states. The form factors for the case Y=Sigma0 in particular, depend crucially on the two real phase (sign) combination, a phase between the Lambda and Lambda* states, and the other, the phase between the Lambda and Sigma0 radial wave functions. Depending on the combination of these two phases, the form factors for the gamma* Sigma0 -> Lambda* reaction can be enhanced or suppressed. Therefore, there is a possibility to determine the phase combination by experiments.

Variations of nuclear binding with quark masses

We investigate the variation with light quark mass of the mass of the nucleon as well as the masses of the mesons commonly used in a one-boson-exchange model of the nucleon-nucleon force. Care is taken to evaluate the meson mass shifts at the kinematic point relevant to that problem. Using these results, the corresponding changes in the energy of the 1 S0 anti-bound state, the binding energies of the deuteron, triton and selected finite nuclei are evaluated using a one-boson exchange model. The results are discussed in the context of possible corrections to the standard scenario for big bang nucleosynthesis in the case where, as suggested by recent observations of quasar absorption spectra, the quark masses may have changed over the age of the Universe.

$J/Ψ$ mass shift and $J/Ψ$-nuclear bound state

We calculate mass shift of the $J/Ψ$ meson in nuclear matter arising from the modification of $DD, DD^*$ and $D^*D^*$ meson loop contributions to the $J/Ψ$ self-energy. The estimate includes the in-medium $D$ and $D^*$ meson masses consistently. The $J/Ψ$ mass shift (scalar potential) calculated is negative (attractive), and complementary to the attractive potential obtained from the QCD color van der Waals forces. Some results for the $J/Ψ$-nuclear bound state energies are also presented.

$J/Ψ$-nuclear bound states

$J/Ψ$-nuclear bound state energies are calculated for a range of nuclei by solving the Proca (Klein-Gordon) equation. Critical input for the calculations, namely the medium-modified $D$ and $D^*$ meson masses, as well as the nucleon density distributions in nuclei, are obtained from the quark-meson coupling model. The attractive potential originates from the $D$ and $D^*$ meson loops in the $J/Ψ$ self-energy in nuclear medium. It appears that $J/Ψ$-nuclear bound states should produce a clear experimental signature provided that the $J/Ψ$ meson is produced in recoilless kinematics.

A simple relation between the gamma N -> N(1535) helicity amplitudes

It is shown that the helicity amplitudes A_1/2 and S_1/2 in the gamma N -> N(1535) reaction, can be well related by S_1/2 = -\frac{\sqrt{1+τ}}{\sqrt{2}} \frac{M_S^2-M^2}{2 M_S Q} A_1/2 in the region Q^2 > 2 GeV^2, where M and M_S are the nucleon and N(1535) masses, q^2=-Q^2 the four-momentum transfer squared, and tau=\sfrac{Q^2}{(M_S+M)^2}. The observed relation is tested by the experimental data and the MAID parametrization. A direct consequence of the relation is that the assumption,|A_1/2| >> |S_1/2|, is not valid for high Q^2. Instead, both amplitudes A_1/2 and S_1/2 have the same Q^2 dependence in the high Q^2 region, aside from that S_{1/2} has an extra factor,-\sfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\sfrac{M_S-M}{2M_S}. The origin of this relation is interpreted in a perspective of a quark model.

Medium Modifications of Hadron Properties and Partonic Processes

Chiral symmetry is one of the most fundamental symmetries in QCD. It is closely connected to hadron properties in the nuclear medium via the reduction of the quark condensate <bar{q}q>, manifesting the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. To better understand this important issue, a number of Jefferson Lab experiments over the past decade have focused on understanding properties of mesons and nucleons in the nuclear medium, often benefiting from the high polarization and luminosity of the CEBAF accelerator. In particular, a novel, accurate, polarization transfer measurement technique revealed for the first time a strong indication that the bound proton electromagnetic form factors in 4He may be modified compared to those in the vacuum. Second, the photoproduction of vector mesons on various nuclei has been measured via their decay to e+e- to study possible in-medium effects on the properties of the rho meson. In this experiment, no significant mass shift and some broadening consistent with expected collisional broadening for the rho meson has been observed, providing tight constraints on model calculations. Finally, processes involving in-medium parton propagation have been studied. The medium modifications of the quark fragmentation functions have been extracted with much higher statistical accuracy than previously possible.

N*(1535) electroproduction at high Q2

A covariant spectator quark model is applied to study the gamma N -> N*(1535) reaction in the large Q2 region. Starting from the relation between the nucleon and N*(1535) systems, the N*(1535) valence quark wave function is determined without the addition of any parameters. The model is then used to calculate the gamma N -> N*(1535) transition form factors. A very interesting, useful relation between the A12 and S12 helicity amplitudes for Q2 > GeV^2, is also derived.

Octet baryon electromagnetic form factors in a relativistic quark model

We study the octet baryon electromagnetic properties by applying the covariant spectator quark model, and provide covariant parametrization that can be used to study baryon electromagnetic reactions. While we use the lattice QCD data in the large pion mass regime (small pion cloud effects) to determine the parameters of the model in the valence quark sector, we use the nucleon physical and octet baryon magnetic moment data to parameterize the pion cloud contributions. The valence quark contributions for the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors are estimated by extrapolating the lattice parametrization in the large pion mass regime to the physical regime. As for the pion cloud contributions, we parameterize them in a covariant, phenomenological manner, combined with SU(3) symmetry. We also discuss the impact of the pion cloud effects on the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors and their radii.

A model for the Delta(1600) resonance and gamma N -> Delta(1600) transition

A covariant spectator constituent quark model is applied to study the gamma N -> Delta(1600) transition. Two processes are important in the transition: a photon couples to the individual quarks of the Delta(1600) core (quark core), and a photon couples to the intermediate pion-baryon states (pion cloud). While the quark core contributions are estimated assuming Delta(1600) as the first radial excitation of Delta(1232), the pion cloud contributions are estimated based on an analogy with the gamma N -> Delta(1232) transition. To estimate the pion cloud contributions in the gamma N -> Delta(1600) transition, we include the relevant intermediate states, pi-N, pi-Delta, pi-N(1440) and pi-Delta(1600). Dependence on the four-momentum transfer squared, Q2, is predicted for the magnetic dipole transition form factor, GM*(Q2), as well as the helicity amplitudes, A_1/2(Q2) and A_3/2(Q2). The results at Q2=0 are compared with the existing data.

Valence quark contributions for the gamma N -> P11(1440) transition

A covariant spectator quark model is applied to estimate the valence quark contributions to the$ F1*(Q2) and F2*(Q2) transition form factors for the gamma N -> P11(1440) reaction. The Roper resonance, P11(1440), is assumed to be the first radial excitation of the nucleon. The model requires no extra parameters except for those already fixed by the previous studies for the nucleon. The results are consistent with the experimental data in the high Q2 region, and those from the lattice QCD. Finally the model is also applied to estimate the meson cloud contributions from the CLAS and MAID analysis.

Binding of D, D-bar and J/Psi mesons in nuclei

We estimate the $D$, $\overline{D}$ and $J/Ψ$ meson potentials in nuclei. $J/Ψ$-nuclear potential (self-energy) is calculated based on the color-singlet mechanism, by the $DD$ and $DD^*$ meson loops. This consistently includes the in-medium properties of $D$ and $D^*$ mesons. The potential obtained for the $J/Ψ$ meson is attractive, and it is complementary to the attraction obtained from the color-octet gluon-based mechanism. We predict that the $D^-$ and $J/Ψ$ mesons will be bound in nuclei under proper conditions.

We study incoherent DVCS on $^4$He in the $^4{\rm He}(e,e^{\prime}γp)X$ reaction, which probes medium-modifications of the bound nucleon GPDs and elastic form factors. Assuming that the bound nucleon GPDs are modified in proportion to the corresponding bound nucleon elastic form factors, as predicted in the Quark-Meson Coupling model, we develop an approach to calculate various incoherent nuclear DVCS observables. As an example, we compute the beam-spin DVCS asymmetry, and predict the $x_B$- and $t$-dependence of the ratio of the bound to free proton asymmetries, $A_{\rm LU}^{p^{\ast}}(ϕ)/A_{\rm LU}^{p}(ϕ)$. We find that the deviation of $A_{\rm LU}^{p^{\ast}}(ϕ)/A_{\rm LU}^{p}(ϕ)$ from unity is as much as $\sim$ 6%.

Photoproduction of hypernuclei within the quark-meson coupling model

We study the photoproduction of the ^12{_Lambda}B hypernucleus within a fully covariant effective Lagrangian based model, employing Lambda bound state spinors derived from the latest quark-meson coupling model. The kaon production vertex is described via creation, propagation and decay of N*(1650), N*(1710), and N*(1720) intermediate baryonic resonant states in the initial collision of the photon with a target proton in the incident channel. The parameters of the resonance vertices are fixed by describing the total and differential cross section data on the elementary gamma (p, K+) Lambda reaction in the energy regime relevant to the hypernuclear production. It is found that the hypernuclear production cross sections calculated with the quark model based hyperon bound state spinors differ significantly from those obtained with the phenomenological Dirac single particle wave functions.

Using baryon octet magnetic moments and masses to fix the pion cloud contribution

Using SU(3) symmetry to constrain the pion BB' couplings, assuming SU(3) breaking comes only from one-loop pion cloud contributions, and using the the covariant spectator theory to describe the photon coupling to the quark core, we show how the experimental masses and magnetic moments of the baryon octet can be used to set a model independent constraint on the strength of the pion cloud contributions to the octet, and hence the nucleon, form factors at Q2=0.

Effect of bound nucleon internal structure change on nuclear structure functions

Effect of bound nucleon internal structure change on nuclear structure functions is investigated based on local quark-hadron duality. The bound nucleon structure functions calculated for charged-lepton and (anti)neutrino scattering are all enhanced in symmetric nuclear matter at large Bjorken-$x$ ($x \agt 0.85$) relative to those in a free nucleon. This implies that a part of the enhancement observed in the nuclear structure function $F_2$ (in the resonance region) at large Bjorken-$x$ (the EMC effect) is due to the effect of the bound nucleon internal structure change. However, the $x$ dependence for the charged-lepton and (anti)neutrino scattering is different. The former [latter] is enhanced [quenched] in the region $0.8 \alt x \alt 0.9$ [$0.7 \alt x \alt 0.85$] due to the difference of the contribution from axial vector form factor. Because of these differences charge symmetry breaking in parton distributions will be enhanced in nuclei.

Two-scale scalar mesons in nuclei

We generalize the linear sigma model in order to develop a chiral-invariant model of nuclear structure. The model is natural, and contains not only the usual sigma meson which is the chiral partner of the pion but also a new chiral-singlet that is responsible for the medium-range nucleon-nucleon attraction. This approach provides significant advantages in terms of its description of nuclear matter and finite nuclei in comparison with conventional models based on the linear sigma model.

Properties of charmed and bottom hadrons in nuclear matter: A plausible study

Changes in properties of heavy hadrons with a charm or a bottom quark are studied in nuclear matter. Effective masses (scalar potentials) for the hadrons are calculated using quark-meson coupling model. Our results also suggest that the heavy baryons containing a charm or a bottom quark will form charmed or bottom hypernuclei, which was first predicted in mid 70's. In addition a possibility of $B^-$-nuclear bound (atomic) states is briefly discussed.

Charmonium absorption by nucleons

$J/Ψ$ dissociation in collisions with nucleons is studied within a boson exchange model and the energy dependence of the dissociation cross section is calculated from the threshold for $Λ_c{\bar D}$ production to high energies. We illustrate the agreement of our results with calculations based on short distance QCD and Regge theory. The compatibility between our calculations and the data on $J/Ψ$ photoproduction on a nucleon is discussed. We evaluate the elastic $J/Ψ{+}N$ cross section using a forward dispersion relation and demonstrate the overall agreement with the predictions from QCD sum rules. Our results are compatible with the phenomenological dissociation cross section evaluated from the experimental data on $J/Ψ$ production from $γ{+}A$, $p{+}A$ and $A{+}A$ collisions.

Chiral Behaviour of the Rho Meson in Lattice QCD

In order to guide the extrapolation of the mass of the rho meson calculated in lattice QCD with dynamical fermions, we study the contributions to its self-energy which vary most rapidly as the quark mass approaches zero; from the processes $ρ\to ωπ$ and $ρ\to ππ$. It turns out that in analysing the most recent data from CP-PACS it is crucial to estimate the self-energy from $ρ\to ππ$ using the same grid of discrete momenta as included implicitly in the lattice simulation. The correction associated with the continuum, infinite volume limit can then be found by calculating the corresponding integrals exactly. Our error analysis suggests that a factor of 10 improvement in statistics at the lowest quark mass for which data currently exists would allow one to determine the physical rho mass to within 5%. Finally, our analysis throws new light on a long-standing problem with the J-parameter.

Hadron Mass Extraction from Lattice QCD

The extraction of quantities from lattice QCD calculations at realistic quark masses is of considerable importance. Whilst physical quark masses are some way off, the recent advances in the calculation of hadron masses within full QCD now invite improved extrapolation methods. We show that, provided the correct chiral behaviour of QCD is respected in the extrapolation to realistic quark masses, one can indeed obtain a fairly reliable determination of masses, the sigma commutator and the J parameter. We summarise these findings by presenting the nonanalytic behaviour of nucleon and rho masses in the standard Edinburgh plot.

Non-singlet structure function of the 3He-3H system and divergence of the Gottfried integral

We study shadowing and antishadowing corrections to the flavor non-singlet structure function F_2(3He)-F_2(3H) and show that the difference between the one-particle density distributions of 3He and 3H plays an important role at very small x. We find that the flavor non-singlet structure function in these mirror nuclei is enhanced at small x by nuclear shadowing, which increases the nuclear Gottfried integral, integrated from 10^{-4} to 1, by 11-36 %. When integrated from zero, the Gottfried integral is divergent for these mirror nuclei. It seems likely that, as a consequence of charge symmetry breaking, this may also apply to the proton-neutron system.

Structure Functions of Unstable Lithium Isotopes

We study both the spin-average and spin-dependent structure functions of the lithium isotopes, $^{6-11}$Li, which could be measured at RIKEN and other nuclear facilities in the future. It is found that the light-cone momentum distribution of the valence neutron in the halo of $^{11}$Li is very sharp and symmetric around y = 1, because of the weak binding. The EMC ratios for Li isotopes are then calculated. We study the possibility of extracting the neutron structure function from data for the nuclear structure functions of the Li isotopes. Next we calculate the spin-dependent structure functions of $^{7,9,11}$Li isotopes, which have spin of 3/2. The effect of the nuclear binding and Fermi motion on the multipole spin structure function, $^{3/2}_{~1}g_1$, is about 10% in the region x < 0.7, but it becomes quite important at large x. The spin structure function of $^{3/2}_{~3}g_1$ is also investigated. Finally, we discuss the modification of the Gottfried and Bjorken integrals in a nuclear medium and point out several candidates for a pair of mirror nuclei to study the flavor-nonsinglet quark distributions in nuclei.

Deep inelastic scattering on asymmetric nuclei

We study deep inelastic scattering on isospin asymmetric nuclei. In particular, the difference of the nuclear structure functions and the Gottfried sum rule for the lightest mirror nuclei, 3He and 3H, are investigated. It is found that such systems can provide significant information on charge symmetry breaking and flavor asymmetry in the nuclear medium. Furthermore, we propose a new method to extract the neutron structure function from radioactive isotopes far from the line of stability. We also discuss the flavor asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process with isospin asymmetric nuclei.

In-medium kaon and antikaon properties in the quark-meson coupling model

The properties of the kaon, $K$, and antikaon, $\kbar$, in nuclear medium are studied in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. Employing a constituent quark-antiquark (MIT bag model) picture, their excitation energies in a nuclear medium at zero momentum are calculated within mean field approximation. The scalar, and the vector mesons are assumed to couple directly to the nonstrange quarks and antiquarks in the $K$ and $\kbar$ mesons. It is demonstrated that the $ρ$ meson induces different mean field potentials for each member of the isodoublets, $K$ and $\kbar$, when they are embedded in asymmetric nuclear matter. Furthermore, it is also shown that this $ρ$ meson potential is repulsive for the $K^-$ meson in matter with a neutron excess, and renders $K^-$ condensation less likely to occur.

Novel features of $J/Ψ$ dissociation in matter

We make a detailed study of the effect that the recently predicted modification of the in-medium masses of charmed mesons would have on $J/Ψ$ dissociation on pion and $ρ$-meson comovers in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We find a substantial dependence of the $J/Ψ$ absorption rates on the density and temperature of the nuclear matter. This suggests that a quantitative analysis of $J/Ψ$ dissociation in nucleus nucleus collisions should include the effects of the modification of meson masses in dense matter.

Strangeness production from $πN$ collisions in nuclear matter

Kaon production in pion-nucleon collisions in nuclear matter is studied in the resonance model. To evaluate the in-medium modification of the reaction amplitude as a function of the baryonic density we introduce relativistic, mean-field potentials for the initial, final and intermediate mesonic and baryonic states. These vector and scalar potentials were calculated using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. The in-medium kaon production cross sections in pion-nucleon interactions for reaction channels with $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons in the final state were calculated at the baryonic densities appropriate to relativistic heavy ion collisions. Contrary to earlier work which has not allowed for the change of the cross section in medium, we find that the data for kaon production are consistent with a repulsive $K^+$-nucleus potential.

Charge symmetry breaking in mirror nuclei from quarks

The binding energy differences of the valence proton and neutron of the mirror nuclei, $^{15}$O -- $^{15}$N, $^{17}$F -- $^{17}$O, $^{39}$Ca -- $^{39}$K and $^{41}$Sc -- $^{41}$Ca, are calculated using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. The calculation involves nuclear structure and shell effects explicitly. It is shown that binding energy differences of a few hundred keV arise from the strong interaction, even after subtracting all electromagnetic corrections. The origin of these differences may be ascribed to the charge symmetry breaking effects set in the strong interaction through the u and d current quark mass difference.

Charmed Mesic Nuclei: Bound D and $\bar{D}$ states with ^{208}Pb

We show that the D^- meson will form narrow bound states with ^{208}Pb. Mean field potentials for the D^0, D^0-bar and D^- in ^{208}Pb are calculated self-consistently using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model in local density approximation. The meson-^{208}Pb bound state energies are then calculated by solving the Klein-Gordon equation with these potentials. The experimental confirmation and comparison with the D^0-bar and D^0 will provide distinctive information on the nature of the interaction between the charmed meson and matter.

Effect of nucleon structure variation on the longitudinal response function

Using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, we study the longitudinal response function for quasielastic electron scattering from nuclear matter. In QMC the coupling constant between the scalar ($σ$) meson and the nucleon is expected to decrease with increasing nuclear density, because of the self-consistent modification of the structure of the nucleon. The reduction of the coupling constant then leads to a smaller contribution from relativistic RPA than in the Walecka model. However, since the electromagnetic form factors of the in-medium nucleon are modified at the same time, the longitudinal response function and the Coulomb sum are reduced by a total of about 20% in comparison with the Hartree contribution. We find that the relativistic RPA and the nucleon structure variation both contribute about fifty-fifty to the reduction of the longitudinal response.

Fock terms in the quark-meson coupling model

The mean field description of nuclear matter in the quark-meson coupling model is improved by the inclusion of exchange contributions (Fock terms). The inclusion of Fock terms allows us to explore the momentum dependence of meson-nucleon vertices and the role of pionic degrees of freedom in matter. It is found that the Fock terms maintain the previous predictions of the model for the in-medium properties of the nucleon and for the nuclear incompressibility. The Fock terms significantly increase the absolute values of the single-particle, four-component scalar and vector potentials, a feature that is relevant for the spin-orbit splitting in finite nuclei.

On Studying Charm in Nuclei through Antiproton Annihilation

We examine the production of open charm in antiproton annihilation on finite nuclei. The enhancement of the subthreshold production cross section, even in a nucleus as light as carbon, should provide a clean signature of the reduction in the masses of these mesons in-medium. We also show that a careful analysis of the $D^+$ and $D^-$ spectra can yield important information on the cross section for $D^{\pm}N$ scattering.

Resonance model study of kaon production in baryon baryon reactions for heavy ion collisions

The energy dependence of the total kaon production cross sections in baryon baryon ($N$ and $Δ$) collisions are studied in the resonance model, which is a relativistic, tree-level treatment. This study is the first attempt to complete a systematic, consistent investigation of the elementary kaon production reactions for both the pion baryon and baryon baryon reactions. Our model suggests that the magnitudes of the isospin-averaged total cross sections for the $N N \to N Y K$ and $ΔN \to N Y K$ ($Y = Λ$ or $Σ$) reactions are almost equal at energies up to about 200 MeV above threshold. However, the magnitudes for the $ΔN$ reactions become about 6 times larger than those for the $N N$ reactions at energies about 1 GeV above threshold. Furthermore, the magnitudes of the isospin-averaged total cross sections for the $N N \to ΔY K$ reactions turn out to be comparable to those for the $N N \to N Y K$ reactions at $N N$ invariant collision energies about 3.1 GeV, and about 5 to 10 times larger at $N N$ invariant collision energies about 3.5 GeV. The microscopic cross sections are parametrized in all isospin channels necessary for the transport model studies of kaon production in heavy ion collisions. These cross sections are then applied in the relativistic transport model to study the sensitivity to the underlying elementary kaon production cross sections.

Are eta- and omega-nuclear states bound ?

We investigate theoretically whether it is feasible to detect $η$- and $ω$-nucleus bound states. As well as the closed shell nuclei, $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb, we also investigate $^6$He, $^{11}$B and $^{26}$Mg, which are the final nuclei in the proposed experiment involving the (d,$^3$He) reaction at GSI. Potentials for the $η$ and $ω$ mesons in these nuclei are calculated in local density approximation, embedding the mesons in the nucleus described by solving the mean-field equations of motion in the QMC model. Our results suggest that one should expect to find $η$- and $ω$-nucleus bound states in all these nuclei.

Medium dependence of the bag constant in the quark-meson coupling model

Possible variations of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model are examined in which the bag constant decreases in the nuclear medium. The reduction is supposed to depend on either the mean scalar field or the effective mass of the nucleon. It is shown that the electric and magnetic radii of the bound nucleon are almost linearly correlated with the bag constant. Using the fact that the size of the bound nucleon inside a nucleus is strongly constrained by $y$-scaling data in quasielastic, electron-nucleus scattering, we set a limit for the reduction allowed in the bag constant for these two models. The present study implies that the bag constant can decrease up to 10--17 % at average nuclear density, depending on the details of the model.

omega-nucleus bound states in the Walecka model

Using the Walecka model, we investigate theoretically whether an omega meson is bound to finite nuclei. We study several nuclei from ^{6}He to ^{208}Pb, and compare the results with those in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. Our calculation shows that deeper omega-nucleus bound states are predicted in the Walecka model than in QMC. One can expect to detect such bound states in the proposed experiment involving the (d,^3He) reaction at GSI.

Quark and gluon condensates in the quark-meson coupling model

Using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, we study the density dependence of the quark and gluon condensates in nuclear matter. We show that the change of the quark condensate is mainly driven by the scalar field in the medium and that the reduction of the quark condensate is suppressed at high density, even in the mean-field approximation. The gluon condensate decreases by 4 - 6 % at nuclear saturation density. We also give a simple relationship between the change of the quark condensate and that of a hadron mass in the medium.

Sigma and omega meson propagation in a dense nuclear medium

The propagation of the scalar ($σ$) and vector ($ω$) mesons in nuclear matter is studied in detail using the Walecka model over a wide range of densities and including the effects of a finite $σ$ width through the inclusion of a two-pion loop. We calculate the dispersion relation and spectral functions of the $σ$ and (transverse and longitudinal) $ω$ mesons, including the effect of $σ$-$ω$ mixing in matter. It is shown that the mixing effect is quite important in the propagation of the (longitudinal) $ω$ and $σ$ mesons above normal nuclear matter density. We find that there is a two-peak structure in the spectral function of the $σ$ channel, caused by $σ$-$ω$ mixing.

Spin Dependent Parton Distributions in a Bound Nucleon

The determination of the spin distribution functions for the neutron requires an understanding of the changes induced by a nuclear medium. We present the first estimates of the changes induced in the spin-dependent, valence parton distributions of the proton and neutron bound in $^3$He and $^6$Li. For $^3$He the result is quite reassuring, in that the off-shell correction to $g_{1n}$ is very small. On the other hand, in $^6$Li the corrections to the spin distributions in the bound proton are sufficiently large that they should be taken into account if one aims for a precision of better than 10%. We provide a simple parametrization of the off-shell changes in the valence spin distributions of $^3$He and $^6$Li, which can be used with any conventional estimate of nuclear binding and Fermi motion corrections.

The neutron charge form factor in helium-3

In order to measure the charge form factor of the neutron, $G^n_E(Q^2)$, one needs to use a neutron bound in a nuclear target. We calculate the change in the form factor for a neutron bound in $^3He$, with respect to the free case, using several versions of the quark meson coupling model. Using the resonance model, which was successfully applied for the study of the $pp{\to}pΛK^+$ reaction, we investigate $NN{\to}NΣK$ reactions that should provide cleaner information about resonance excitations and meson exchange contributions. For this purpose we demonstrate that the invariant mass distribution for the $ΣK$ system, as well as the Dalitz plot for the $NN{\to}NΣK$ reaction, provide direct information about the $ΣK$ production mechanism, which can be tested in the near future by experiments at COSY.

A clue to the mechanism of $ΛK^+$ production in $pp$-reactions

We analyse the $p p \to p ΛK^+$ total cross section data which were recently measured by the COSY-11 collaboration at an energy 2~MeV above the reaction threshold. Our analysis suggests that the measurement of the invariant mass spectrum for the $ΛK^+$ at energies around 100 MeV above the threshold can provide a new constraint on the theoretical calculations for this reaction. In particular, the measurement can give a clue as to whether the reaction is dominated by resonance excitation or not. Thus, it should contribute to further understanding of the strangeness production mechanism. We show the invariant mass spectra for the $ΛK^+$ system in these optimal kinematic conditions calculated by several approaches, and demonstrate that our suggestion is experimentally feasible.

Self-consistent description of $Λ$ hypernuclei in the quark-meson coupling model

The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which has been successfully used to describe the properties of both finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter, is applied to a study of $Λ$ hypernuclei. With the assumption that the (self-consistent) exchanged scalar, and vector, mesons couple only to the u and d quarks, a very weak spin-orbit force in the $Λ$-nucleus interaction is achieved automatically. This is a direct consequence of the SU(6) quark model wave function of the $Λ$ used in the QMC model. Possible implications and extensions of the present investigation are also discussed.

The quark-meson coupling model for Lambda, Sigma and Xi hypernuclei

The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which has been successfully used to describe the properties of both infinite nuclear matter and finite nuclei, is applied to a systematic study of $Λ, Σ$ and $Ξ$ hypernuclei. Assumptions made in the present study are, (i) the (self-consistent) exchanged scalar, and vector, mesons couple only to the u and d quarks, and (ii) an SU(6) valence quark model for the bound nucleons and hyperon. The model automatically leads to a very weak spin-orbit interaction for the $Λ$ in a hypernucleus. Effects of the Pauli blocking at the quark level, particularly in the open, coupled, $ΣN - ΛN$ channel (strong conversion), is also taken into account in a phenomenological way.

Resonance model study of strangeness production in pp collisions

Results for the energy dependence of the elementary kaon production cross sections in proton-proton collisions are reported. Calculations are performed within an extended version of the resonance model which was used for the previous studies of elementary kaon production in pion-nucleon and pion-$Δ$ collisions. Although the model treatment is within the {\it empirical} tree level (observed widths for the resonances are used), it is fully relativistic, and includes all relevant baryon resonances up to 2 GeV. One of the purposes of this study is to provide the results for the simulation codes of subthreshold kaon production in heavy ion collisions. This is the first, consistent study of the elementary kaon production reactions including both $πB$ and $B B$ ($B=N, Δ$) collisions on the same footing. Comparisons are made between the calculated results and the existing semi-empirical parametrizations which are widely used for the simulation codes, as well as the experimental data.
