Field-induced spin-density wave beyond hidden order in URu2Si2

URu2Si2 is one of the most enigmatic strongly-correlated-electron systems and offers a fertile testing ground for new concepts in condensed matter science. In spite of >30 years of intense research, no consensus on the order parameter of its low-temperature hidden-order phase exists. A strong magnetic field transforms the hidden order into magnetically-ordered phases, whose order parameter has also been defying experimental observation. Here, thanks to an instrumentation breakthrough in high-field neutron scattering, we identify the field-induced phases of URu2Si2 as a spin-density-wave state with wavevector k1 = (0.6 0 0). The transition to the spin-density wave represents a unique touchstone for understanding the hidden-order phase. An intimate relationship between this magnetic structure, the magnetic fluctuations, and the Fermi surface is emphasized, calling for dedicated band structure calculations.

A 31T split-pair pulsed magnet for single crystal x-ray diffraction at low temperature

We have developed a pulsed magnet system with panoramic access for synchrotron x-ray diffraction in magnetic fields up to 31T and at low temperature down to 1.5 K. The apparatus consists of a split-pair magnet, a liquid nitrogen bath to cool the pulsed coil, and a helium cryostat allowing sample temperatures from 1.5 up to 250 K. Using a 1.15MJ mobile generator, magnetic field pulses of 60 ms length were generated in the magnet, with a rise time of 16.5 ms and a repetition rate of 2 pulses/hour at 31 T. The setup was validated for single crystal diffraction on the ESRF beamline ID06.

High-field irreversible moment reorientation in the antiferromagnet Fe$_{1.1}$Te

Magnetization measurements have been performed on single-crystalline Fe$_{1.1}$Te in pulsed magnetic fields $\mathbf{H}\perp\mathbf{c}$ up to 53 T and temperatures from 4.2 to 65 K. At $T=4.2$ K, a non-reversible reorientation of the antiferromagnetic moments is observed at $μ_0H_R=48$ T as the pulsed field is on the rise. No anomaly is observed at $H_R$ during the fall of the field and, as long as the temperature is unchanged, during both rises and falls of additional field pulses. The transition at $H_R$ is reactivated if the sample is warmed up above the Néel temperature $T_N\simeq60$ K and cooled down again. The magnetic field-temperature phase diagram of Fe$_{1.1}$Te in $\mathbf{H}\perp\mathbf{c}$ is also investigated. We present the temperature dependence of $H_R$, as well as that of the antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic borderline $H_c$ in temperatures above 40 K.

High frequency magnetic oscillations of the organic metal $θ$-(ET)$_4$ZnBr$_4$(C$_6$H$_4$Cl$_2$) in pulsed magnetic field of up to 81 T

De Haas-van Alphen oscillations of the organic metal $θ$-(ET)$_4$ZnBr$_4$(C$_6$H$_4$Cl$_2$) are studied in pulsed magnetic fields up to 81 T. The long decay time of the pulse allows determining reliable field-dependent amplitudes of Fourier components with frequencies up to several kiloteslas. The Fourier spectrum is in agreement with the model of a linear chain of coupled orbits. In this model, all the observed frequencies are linear combinations of the frequency linked to the basic orbit $α$ and to the magnetic-breakdown orbit $β$.

Field-Induced Freezing of a Quantum Spin Liquid on the Kagome Lattice

We report 17O NMR measurements in the S=1/2 Cu2+ kagome antiferromagnet Herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 down to 45mK in magnetic fields ranging from 2T to 12T. While Herbertsmithite displays a gapless spin-liquid behavior in zero field, we uncover an instability toward a spin-solid phase at sub-kelvin temperature induced by an applied magnetic field. The latter phase shows largely suppressed moments $\lesssim 0.1\muB$ and gapped excitations. The H-T phase diagram suggests the existence of a quantum critical point at the small but finite magnetic field mu0 Hc=1.55(25)T. We discuss this finding in light of the perturbative Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which was theoretically proposed to sustain a quantum critical regime for the quantum kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet model.

A Photon Regeneration Experiment for Axionlike Particle Search using X-rays

In this letter we describe our novel photon regeneration experiment for the axionlike particle search using a x-ray beam with a photon energy of 50.2 keV and 90.7 keV, two superconducting magnets of 3 T, and a Ge detector with a high quantum efficiency. A counting rate of regenerated photons compatible with zero has been measured. The corresponding limits on the pseudoscalar axionlike particle-two photon coupling constant is obtained as a function of the particle mass. Our setup widens the energy window of purely terrestrial experiments devoted to the axionlike particle search by coupling to two photons. It also opens a new domain of experimental investigation of photon propagation in magnetic fields.

Universal magnetic structure of the half-magnetization phase in Cr-based spinels

Using an elastic neutron scattering technique under a pulsed magnetic field up to 30 T, we determined the magnetic structure in the half-magnetization plateau phase in the spinel CdCr$_2$O$_4$. The magnetic structure has a cubic $P4_3$32 symmetry, which is the same as that observed in HgCr$_2$O$_4$. This suggests that there is a universal field induced spin-lattice coupling mechanism at work in the Cr-based spinels.
