Classically emulated digital quantum simulation for screening and confinement in the Schwinger model with a topological term

We perform digital quantum simulation, using a classical simulator, to study screening and confinement in a gauge theory with a topological term, focusing on ($1+1$)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (Schwinger model) with a theta term. We compute the ground state energy in the presence of probe charges to estimate the potential between them, via adiabatic state preparation. We compare our simulation results and analytical predictions for a finite volume, finding good agreements. In particular our result in the massive case shows a linear behavior for non-integer charges and a non-linear behavior for integer charges, consistently with the expected confinement (screening) behavior for non-integer (integer) charges.

Negative string tension of higher-charge Schwinger model via digital quantum simulation

We study some properties of generalized global symmetry for the charge-$q$ Schwinger model in the Hamiltonian formalism, which is the $(1+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with a charge-$q$ Dirac fermion. This model has the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ $1$-form symmetry, which is a remnant of the electric $U(1)$ $1$-form symmetry in the pure Maxwell theory. It is known that if we put the theory on closed space, then the Hilbert space is decomposed into $q$ distinct sectors, called universes and some states with higher energy density do not decay to the ground state due to the selection rule of the $1$-form symmetry. Even with open boundaries, we can observe the stability of such states by seeing a negative string tension behavior, meaning that opposite charges repel with each other. We develop a method based on the adiabatic state preparation to see this feature with digital quantum simulation and confirm it using a classical simulator of quantum devices. Especially, we measure local energy density and see how it jumps between inside and outside of insertion of the probe charges. We explicitly see that the energy density inside is lower than the outside one. This is a clear signature of the negative string tension.

Finite-Density Massless Two-Color QCD at Isospin Roberge-Weiss Point and 't Hooft Anomaly

We study the phase diagram of two-flavor massless two-color QCD (QC$_2$D) under the presence of quark chemical potentials and imaginary isospin chemical potentials. At the special point of the imaginary isospin chemical potential, called the isospin Roberge--Weiss (RW) point, two-flavor QC$_2$D enjoys the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ center symmetry that acts on both quark flavors and the Polyakov loop. We find a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ 't Hooft anomaly of this system, which involves the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ center symmetry, the baryon-number symmetry, and the isospin chiral symmetry. Anomaly matching, therefore, constrains the possible phase diagram at any temperatures and quark chemical potentials at the isospin RW point, and we compare it with previous results obtained by chiral effective field theory and lattice simulations. We also point out an interesting similarity of two-flavor massless QC$_2$D with $(2+1)$d quantum anti-ferromagnetic systems.

Lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ model with ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition: bions, adiabatic continuity and pseudo-entropy

We investigate the lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small) with the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetric twisted boundary condition, where a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences ($L_{s}\gg L_τ$) is taken to approximate ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. We find that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop, which is an order parameter of the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetry, remains consistent with zero ($|\langle P\rangle|\sim 0$) from small to relatively large inverse coupling $β$ (from large to small $L_τ$). As $β$ increases, the distribution of the Polyakov loop on the complex plane, which concentrates around the origin for small $β$, isotropically spreads and forms a regular $N$-sided-polygon shape (e.g. pentagon for $N=5$), leading to $|\langle P\rangle| \sim 0$. By investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, we also verify the existence of fractional instantons and bions, which cause tunneling transition between the classical $N$ vacua and stabilize the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry. Even for quite high $β$, we find that a regular-polygon shape of the Polyakov-loop distribution, even if it is broken, tends to be restored and $|\langle P\rangle|$ gets smaller as the number of samples increases. To discuss the adiabatic continuity of the vacuum structure from another viewpoint, we calculate the $β$ dependence of ``pseudo-entropy" density $\propto\langle T_{xx}-T_{ττ}\rangle$. The result is consistent with the absence of a phase transition between large and small $β$ regions.

Relative scale setting for two-color QCD with Nf=2 Wilson fermions

We determine the scale setting function and the pseudo-critical temperature on the lattice in $N_f=2$ two-color QCD using the Iwasaki gauge and Wilson fermion actions. Although two-color QCD does not correspond to the real world, it is very useful as a good testing ground for three-color QCD. The scale setting function gives the relative lattice spacings of simulations performed at different values of the bare coupling. It is a necessary tool for taking the continuum limit. Firstly, we measure the meson spectra for various combinations of ($β,κ$) and find a line of constant physics in $β$--$κ$ plane. Next, we determine the scale setting function via $w_0$ scale in the gradient flow method. Furthermore, we estimate the pseudo-critical temperature at zero chemical potential from the chiral susceptibility. Combining these results, we can discuss the QCD phase diagram in which both axes are given by dimensionless quantities, namely, the temperature normalized by the pseudo-critical temperature on the lattice and the chemical potential normalized by the pseudoscalar meson mass. It makes it easy to compare among several lattice studies and also makes it possible to compare theoretical analyses and lattice studies in the continuum limit.

Sparse modeling approach to obtaining the shear viscosity from smeared correlation functions

We propose the sparse modeling method to estimate the spectral function from the smeared correlation functions. We give a description of how to obtain the shear viscosity from the correlation function of the renormalized energy-momentum tensor (EMT) measured by the gradient flow method ($C(t,τ)$) for the quenched QCD at finite temperature. The measurement of the renormalized EMT in the gradient flow method reduces a statistical uncertainty thanks to its property of the smearing. However, the smearing breaks the sum rule of the spectral function and the over-smeared data in the correlation function may have to be eliminated from the analyzing process of physical observables. In this work, we demonstrate that the sparse modeling analysis in the intermediate-representation basis (IR basis), which connects between the Matsubara frequency data and real frequency data. It works well even using very limited data of $C(t,τ)$ only in the fiducial window of the gradient flow. We utilize the ADMM algorithm which is useful to solve the LASSO problem under some constraints. We show that the obtained spectral function reproduces the input smeared correlation function at finite flow-time. Several systematic and statistical errors and the flow-time dependence are also discussed.

Lattice study on the twisted ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ models on ${\mathbb R}\times S^{1}$

We report the results of the lattice simulation of the ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small). We take a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences to approximate the model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. For periodic boundary condition imposed in the $S_τ^{1}$ direction, we show that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop undergoes a deconfinement crossover as the compactified circumference is decreased, where the peak of the associated susceptibility gets sharper for larger $N$. For ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition, we find that, even at relatively high $β$ (small circumference), the regular $N$-sided polygon-shaped distributions of Polyakov loop leads to small expectation values of Polyakov loop, which implies unbroken ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry if sufficient statistics and large volumes are adopted. We also argue the existence of fractional instantons and bions by investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, which causes transition between ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ vacua.

Two-colour QCD phases and the topology at low temperature and high density

We delineate equilibrium phase structure and topological charge distribution of dense two-colour QCD at low temperature by using a lattice simulation with two-flavour Wilson fermions that has a chemical potential $μ$ and a diquark source $j$ incorporated. We systematically measure the diquark condensate, the Polyakov loop, the quark number density and the chiral condensate with improved accuracy and $j\to0$ extrapolation over earlier publications; the known qualitative features of the low temperature phase diagram, which is composed of the hadronic, Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) and BCS phases, are reproduced. In addition, we newly find that around the boundary between the hadronic and BEC phases, nonzero quark number density occurs even in the hadronic phase in contrast to the prediction of the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT), while the diquark condensate approaches zero in a manner that is consistent with the ChPT prediction. At the highest $μ$, which is of order the inverse of the lattice spacing, all the above observables change drastically, which implies a lattice artifact. Finally, at temperature of order $0.45T_c$, where $T_c$ is the chiral transition temperature at zero chemical potential, the topological susceptibility is calculated from a gradient-flow method and found to be almost constant for all the values of $μ$ ranging from the hadronic to BCS phase. This is a contrast to the case of $0.89T_c$ in which the topological susceptibility becomes small as the hadronic phase changes into the quark-gluon plasma phase.

Entanglement entropy for pure gauge theories in 1+1 dimensions using the lattice regularization

We study the entanglement entropy (EE) for pure gauge theories in 1+1 dimensions with the lattice regularization. Using the definition of the EE for lattice gauge theories proposed in a previous paper [1] (S. Aoki, T. Iritani, M. Nozaki, T. Numasawa, N. Shiba and H. Tasaki, JHEP 1506 (2015) 187), we calculate the EE for arbitrary pure as well as mixed states in terms of eigenstates of the transfer matrix in 1+1 dimensional lattice gauge theory. We find that the EE of an arbitrary pure state does not depend on the lattice spacing, thus giving the EE in the continuum limit, and show that the EE for an arbitrary pure state is independent of the real (Minkowski) time evolution. We also explicitly demonstrate the dependence of EE on the gauge fixing at the boundaries between two subspaces, which was pointed out for general cases in the paper [1]. In addition, we calculate the EE at zero as well as finite temperature by the replica method, and show that our result in the continuum limit corresponds to the result obtained before in the continuum theory, with a specific value of the counter term, which is otherwise arbitrary in the continuum calculation. We confirm the gauge dependence of the EE also for the replica method.

(2+1)-flavor QCD Thermodynamics from the Gradient Flow

Recently, we proposed a novel method to define and calculate the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) in lattice gauge theory on the basis of the Yang-Mills gradient flow [1]. In this proceedings, we summarize the basic idea and technical steps to obtain the bulk thermodynamic quantities in lattice gauge theory using this method for the quenched and $(2+1)$-flavor QCD. The revised results of integration measure (trace anomaly) and entropy density of the quenched QCD with corrected coefficients are shown. Furthermore, we also show the flow time dependence of the parts of EMT including the dynamical fermions. This work is based on a joint-collaboration between FlowQCD and WHOT QCD.

A novel scheme for the wave function renormalization of the composite operators

We propose a novel renormalization scheme for the hadronic operators. The renormalization factor of the operator in this scheme is normalized by the correlation function at tree level in coordinate space. If we focus on the pseudo scalar operator, then its renormalization factor is related to the mass renormalization factor of the fermion through the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) relation. Using the renormalization factor for the pseudo scalar operator in our scheme, we obtain the mass anomalous dimension of the SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f=12 massless fundamental fermions, which has an infrared fixed point (IRFP). The mass anomalous dimension at the IRFP is estimated as gamma_m^*= 0.044_{-0.024}^{+0.025} (stat.)_{-0.032}^{+0.057} (syst.).

Entanglement in Four-Dimensional SU(3) Gauge Theory

We investigate the quantum entanglement entropy for the four-dimensional Euclidean SU(3) gauge theory. We present the first non-perturbative calculation of the entropic $c$-function ($C(l)$) of SU(3) gauge theory in lattice Monte Carlo simulation using the replica method. For $0 \leqslant l \leqslant 0.7$~fm, where $l$ is the length of the subspace, the entropic $c$-function is almost constant, indicating conformally invariant dynamics. The value of the constant agrees with that perturbatively obtained from free gluons, with 20 % discrepancy. When $l$ is close to the Hadronic scale, the entropic $c$-function decreases smoothly, and it is consistent with zero within error bars at $l \gtrsim 0.9$ fm.

Finite-temperature phase transition of $N_{f}=3$ QCD with exact center symmetry

For the $Z_{3}$-symmetric lattice QCD-like theory ($Z_3$-QCD), in which $SU(3)$ gauge theory is coupled with three fundamental Wilson quarks with flavor-dependent twisted boundary conditions, we calculate the expectation values of Polyakov loop and chiral condensate as functions of temperature on $16^3 \times4$ and $20^3 \times 4$ lattices with $m_{PS}/m_{V}=0.70$ fixed. We find the first-order phase transition with respect to the $Z_{3}$ center symmetry, where the Polyakov loop exhibits a hysteresis depending on the initial condition of thermalization process. We also show that the crossover behavior of chiral condensate around the critical temperature of the center transition and the manifestation of flavor symmetry breaking in the high-temperature phase.

Lattice study on QCD-like theory with exact center symmetry

We investigate QCD-like theory with exact center symmetry, with emphasis on the finite-temperature phase transition concerning center and chiral symmetries. On the lattice, we formulate center symmetric $SU(3)$ gauge theory with three fundamental Wilson quarks by twisting quark boundary conditions in a compact direction ($Z_3$-QCD model). We calculate the expectation value of Polyakov loop and the chiral condensate as a function of temperature on 16^3 x 4 and 20^3 x 4 lattices along the line of constant physics realizing $m_{PS}/m_{V}=0.70$. We find out the first-order center phase transition, where the hysteresis of the magnitude of Polyakov loop exists depending on thermalization processes. We show that chiral condensate decreases around the critical temperature in a similar way to that of the standard three-flavor QCD, as it has the hysteresis in the same range as that of Polyakov loop. We also show that the flavor symmetry breaking due to the twisted boundary condition gets qualitatively manifest in the high-temperature phase. These results are consistent with the predictions based on the chiral effective model in the literature. Our approach could provide novel insights to the nonperturbative connection between the center and chiral properties.

Thermodynamics and reference scale of SU(3) gauge theory from gradient flow on fine lattices

We study the parametrization of lattice spacing and thermodynamics of SU(3) gauge theory on the basis of the Yang-Mills gradient flow on fine lattices. The lattice spacing of the Wilson gauge action is determined over a wide range $6.3\leβ\le7.5$ with high accuracy. The measurements of the flow time and lattice spacing dependences of the expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor are performed on fine lattices.

Thermodynamics of SU(3) Gauge Theory from Gradient Flow

A novel method to study the bulk thermodynamics in lattice gauge theory is proposed on the basis of the Yang-Mills gradient flow with a fictitious time t. The energy density (epsilon) and the pressure (P) of SU(3) gauge theory at fixed temperature are calculated directly on 32^3 x (6,8,10) lattices from the thermal average of the well-defined energy-momentum tensor (T_{mu nu}^R(x)) obtained by the gradient flow. It is demonstrated that the continuum limit can be taken in a controlled manner from the t-dependence of the flowed data.

Determination of the mass anomalous dimension for $N_f=12$ and $N_f=9$ SU($3$) gauge theories

We show the numerical simulation result for the mass anomalous dimension of the SU($3$) gauge theory coupled to $N_f = 12$ fundamental fermions. We use two independent methods, namely the step scaling method and the hyperscaling method of the Dirac mode number, to determine the anomalous dimension in the vicinity of the infrared fixed point of the theory. We show the continuum extrapolations keeping the renormalized coupling constant as a reference in both analyses. Furthermore, some recent works seems to suggest the lower boundary of the conformal window of the SU($3$) gauge theory exists between $N_f=8$ and $10$. We also briefly report our new project, in which the numerical simulation of the SU($3$) gauge theory coupled to $N_f=9$ fundamental fermions has been performed.

Measurement of thermodynamics using gradient flow

We analyze bulk thermodynamics and correlation functions of the energy-momentum tensor in pure Yang-Mills gauge theory using the energy-momentum tensor defined by the gradient flow and small flow time expansion. Our results on thermodynamic observables are consistent with those obtained by the conventional integral method. The analysis of the correlation function of total energy supports the energy conservation. It is also addressed that these analyses with gradient flow require less statistics compared with the previous methods. All these results suggest that the energy-momentum tensor can be successfully defined and observed on the lattice with moderate numerical costs with the gradient flow.

Phase structure of pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory in 5 dimensions

We investigate the nonperturbative phase structure of five-dimensional SU(3) pure Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. We perform numerical simulations using the Wilson plaquette gauge action on an anisotropic lattice with a four-dimensional lattice spacing (a4) and with an independent value in the fifth dimension (a5). We investigate both cases of a4 > a5 and a4 < a5. The Polyakov loops in the fourth and the fifth directions are observed, and we find that there are four possible phases for the anisotropic five-dimensional quenched QCD theory on the lattice. We determine the critical values of the lattice bare coupling and the anisotropy parameter for each phase transition. Furthermore, we find that the two center domains where the Polyakov loop have locally different charges of the center symmetry appears in single configuration in the specific region of the lattice parameters.

Hosotani mechanism on the lattice

We explore the phase structure and symmetry breaking in four-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory with one spatial compact dimension on the lattice in the presence of fermions in the adjoint and fundamental representations with general boundary conditions. The eigenvalue phases of Polyakov loops and the associated susceptibility are measured on 16^3 x 4 lattice. We establish a correspondence between the phases found on the lattice and the gauge symmetry breaking by the Hosotani mechanism.

Properties of the twisted Polyakov loop coupling and the infrared fixed point in the SU(3) gauge theories

We report the nonperturbative behavior of the twisted Polyakov loop (TPL) coupling constant for the SU(3) gauge theories defined by the ratio of Polyakov loop correlators in finite volume with twisted boundary condition. We reveal the vacuum structures and the phase structure for the lattice gauge theory with the twisted boundary condition. Carrying out the numerical simulations, we determine the nonperturbative running coupling constant in this renormalization scheme for the quenched QCD and Nf=12 SU(3) gauge theories. At first, we study the quenched QCD theory using the plaquette gauge action. The TPL coupling constant has a fake fixed point in the confinement phase. We discuss this fake fixed point of the TPL scheme and obtain the nonperturbative running coupling constant in the deconfinement phase, where the magnitude of the Polyakov loop shows the nonzero values. We also investigate the system coupled to fundamental fermions. Since we use the naive staggered fermion with the twisted boundary condition in our simulation, only multiples of 12 are allowed for the number of flavors. According to the perturbative two loop analysis, the Nf=12 SU(3) gauge theory might have a conformal fixed point in the infrared region. However, the recent lattice studies show controversial results for the existence of the fixed point. We point out possible problems in previous works, and present our careful study. Finally, we find the infrared fixed point (IRFP) and discuss the robustness of the nontrivial IRFP of many flavor system under the change of the analysis method. A part of preliminary results was reported in the proceedings [1, 2] and the letter paper [3]. In this paper we include a review of these results and give a final conclusion for the existence of IRFP of SU(3) Nf = 12 massless theory using the updated data.

The anomalous dimension at the infrared fixed point of Nf = 12 SU(3) theory

We propose a novel renormalization scheme for the hadronic operators. As an example, we show the numerical simulation result for the anomalous dimension of the pseudo scalar operator of the SU(3) gauge theory coupled to Nf = 12 fundamental fermions. The anomalous dimension of the pseudo scalar operator is related with the mass renormalization factor of the fermion thought the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) relation. We derive the mass anomalous dimension at the infrared fixed point (IRFP) of the theory, and find that it is given by gamma_m^*= 0.044_{-0.024}^{+0.025} (stat.)_{-0}^{+0.057} (syst.)_{-0.032}^{+0} (syst.), where the first systematic error comes from the uncertainty of the continuum extrapolation while the second one comes from the uncertainty of the value of the coupling constant at the IRFP.

The twisted Polyakov loop coupling and the search for an IR fixed point

We report the nonperturbative behavior of the twisted Polyakov loop (TPL) coupling constant for the SU(3) gauge theories defined by the ratio of Polyakov loop correlators in finite volume with twisted boundary condition. Carrying out the numerical simulations, we determine the nonperturbative running coupling constant in this renormalization scheme for Nf=12 SU(3) gauge theory. According to the perturbative two loop analysis, the Nf=12 SU(3) gauge theory might have a conformal fixed point in the infrared region. However, the recent lattice studies show controversial results for the existence of the fixed point. We point out possible reasons of the controversy in previous works, and present our careful study. Finally, we find the infrared fixed point (IRFP) and discuss the robustness of the nontrivial IRFP of many flavor system under the change of the analysis method. This talk is based on the paper[1].

The Infrared behavior of SU(3) Nf=12 gauge theory -about the existence of conformal fixed point-

Incorporated with twisted boundary condition, Polyakov loop correlators can give a definition of the renormalized coupling. We employ this scheme for the step scaling method (with step size s = 2) in the search of conformal fixed point of SU(3) gauge theory with 12 massless flavors. Staggered fermion and plaquette gauge action are used in the lattice simulation with six different lattice sizes, L/a = 20, 16, 12, 10, 8 and 6. For the largest lattice size, L/a = 20, we used a large number of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and accumulated 3,000,000 trajectories in total. We found that the step scaling function sigma (u) is consistent with u in the low-energy region. This means the existence of conformal fixed point. Some details of our analysis and simulations will also be presented.

A new scheme for the running coupling constant in gauge theories using Wilson loops

We propose a new renormalization scheme of the running coupling constant in general gauge theories using the Wilson loops. The renormalized coupling constant is obtained from the Creutz ratio in lattice simulations and the corresponding perturbative coefficient at the leading order. The latter can be calculated by adopting the zeta-function resummation techniques. We perform a benchmark test of our scheme in quenched QCD with the plaquette gauge action. The running of the coupling constant is determined by applying the step-scaling procedure. Using several methods to improve the statistical accuracy, we show that the running coupling constant can be determined in a wide range of energy scales with relatively small number of gauge configurations.

Search for the IR fixed point in the Twisted Polyakov Loop scheme (II)

We measure the renormalized coupling in the Twisted Polyakov loop scheme for SU(3) gauge theory coupled with $N_f=12$ fundamental fermions. To find the infrared fixed point of this theory, we focus on the step scaling function for the renormalized coupling. We take the continuum limit using the linear function of $(a/L)^2$ and a constant fit function. We find that there is a sizeable systematic error due to the choice of the continuum extrapolation function in the low energy region. We will give some directions to reduce the systematic errors.

Study of the scaling properties in SU(2) gauge theory with eight flavors

We present our preliminary study of the SU(2) gauge theory with 8 flavors of fermions in fundamental representation. This theory could be a candidate of the gauge theory with conformal fixed point. By using Wilson/Polyakov loop in a finite volume with twisted boundary conditions, we study the renormalization group flow of the gauge coupling constant. Our calculation gives consistent result with the perturbative prediction of the running coupling in the weak coupling region. We investigate a possible signal for conformal behavior in the strong coupling region.

Search for the IR fixed point in the twisted Polyakov loop scheme

We present a non-perturbative study of the running coupling constant in the Twisted Polyakov Loop (TPL) scheme. We investigate how the systematic and statistical errors can be controlled {\it via} a feasibility study in SU(3) pure Yang-Mills theory. We show that our method reproduces the perturbative determination of the running coupling in the UV. In addition, our numerical result agrees with the theoretical prediction of this coupling constant in the IR. We also present our preliminary results for $N_f=12$ QCD, where an IR fixed point may be present.

A New Method of Calculating the Running Coupling Constant

We propose a new method to compute the running coupling constant of gauge theories on the lattice. We first give the definition of the running coupling in the new scheme using the Wilson loops in a finite volume, and explain how the running of the coupling constant is extracted from the measurement of the volume dependence. The perturbative calculation of the renormalization constant to define the scheme is also given at the leading order. As a benchmark test of the new scheme we apply the method the case of the quenched QCD. We show the preliminary result from our numerical simulations which are carried out with plaquette gauge action for various lattice sizes and bare lattice couplings. With techniques to improve the statistical accuracy, we show that we can determine the non-perturbative running of the coupling constant in a wide range of the energy scale with relatively small number of gauge configurations in our scheme. We compare our lattice data of the running coupling constant with perturbative renormalization group evolution at one- and two-loop order, and confirm the consistency between them at high energy.
