Nucleon isovector tensor charge from lattice QCD with physical light quarks

We present preliminary results for the axial, scalar and tensor charges of the nucleon measured in 2+1 flavor QCD with the physical light quarks ($m_π=135$ MeV). Our simulations are carried out with gauge configurations generated by the PACS Collaboration with the stout-smeared $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions and Iwasaki gauge action at a single lattice spacing of $0.085\ (\mathrm{fm})$. There are two lattice ensembles of the PACS gauge configurations, which have physical lattice sizes over $(10\ \mathrm{fm})^4$ and $(5\ \mathrm{fm})^4$, respectively. We compute the nucleon three-point correlation functions in the axial, scalar, and tensor channels. For the renormalization, we use the Rome-Southampton method as the intermediate scheme in order to evaluate the renormalization constants for the scalar and tensor currents in fully nonperturbative manner. We then evaluate the renormalized values of the scalar and tensor charges ($g_S$ and $g_T$) in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme at the renormalization scale of 2 GeV with a help of the continuum perturbation theory for the matching between two schemes. We compare our preliminary results of $g_S$ and $g_T$ with those of other collaboration results.

Tangelo: An Open-source Python Package for End-to-end Chemistry Workflows on Quantum Computers

Tangelo [link: https://github.com/goodchemistryco/Tangelo] is an open-source Python software package for the development of end-to-end chemistry workflows on quantum computers, released under Apache 2.0 license. It aims to support the design of successful experiments on quantum hardware, and to facilitate advances in quantum algorithm development. The software enables quick exploration of different approaches by assembling reusable building blocks and algorithms, with the flexibility to let users introduce their own. Tangelo is backend-agnostic and enables switching between various backends (Braket, Qiskit, Qulacs, Azure Quantum, QDK, Cirq...) with minimal changes in the code. The package can be used to explore quantum computing applications such as open-shell systems, excited states, or more industrially-relevant systems by leveraging problem decomposition at scale. This paper outlines the design choices, philosophy, and main features of Tangelo.

The lower moments of nucleon structure functions in lattice QCD with physical quark masses

We present results for the nucleon structure functions and form factors obtained from 2+1 flavor lattice QCD with physical light quark masses ($m_π=135$ MeV) in a large spatial extent of about 10 fm. Our calculations are performed with the PACS10 gauge configurations generated by the PACS Collaboration with the six stout-smeared ${\mathscr{O}}(a)$ improved Wilson-clover quark action and Iwasaki gauge action at $β=1.82$ and $2.00$ corresponding to lattice spacings of $0.085$ fm and $0.064$ fm respectively. The lower moments of structure functions, $\langle x \rangle_{u-d}$ and $\langle x \rangle_{Δu - Δd}$ given by the twist-2 operators being properly renormalized, are evaluated in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme at the renormalization scale of 2 GeV only at $β=1.82$, since the renormalization factors at $β=2.00$ have not yet determined nonperturbatively in the RI/MOM scheme. Instead, at two lattice spacings, we evaluate appropriate ratios of $g_{A}/g_{V}$ and $\langle x \rangle_{u-d}/\langle x \rangle_{Δu -Δd}$, which are not renormalized in the continuum limit. These quantities thus can be directly compared with the experimental data without the renormalization.

$K_{l3}$ form factors at the physical point on (10.9 fm)$^3$ volume

We present the calculation of the $K_{l3}$ form factors with $N_f = 2 + 1$ nonperturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action and Iwasaki gauge action at the physical point on a large volume of (10.9 fm)$^3$ at one lattice spacing of $a = 0.085$ fm. We extract the form factors from 3-point functions with three different time separations between the source and sink operators to confirm suppression of excited state contributions. The form factors are calculated in very close to the zero momentum transfer, $q^2 = 0$, thanks to the large volume, so that stable interpolations to $q^2 = 0$ are carried out. Using our form factors, we obtain the form factor at $q^2 = 0$, $f_+(0) = 0.9603(16)(^{+14}_{\ -4})(44)(19)(1)$, where the first, second, and fifth errors are statistical, systematic errors from fit functions and the isospin breaking effect, respectively. The third and fourth errors denote the finite lattice spacing effects estimated from the renormalization factor and contribution beyond the leading order SU(3) chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). The result of $f_+(0)$ yields the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element, $|V_{us}| = 0.2255(13)(4)$, where the first error comes from our calculation and the second from the experiment. This value is consistent with the ones determined from the unitarity of the CKM matrix and the $K_{l2}$ decay within one standard deviation, while it is slightly larger than recent lattice calculations by at most 1.5 $σ$. Furthermore, we evaluate the shape of the form factors and the phase space integral from our results. We confirm that those results are consistent with the experiment, and also $|V_{us}|$ determined with our phase space integral agrees with the one in the above.

$K_{l3}$ form factors in $N_f = 2+1$ QCD at physical point on large volume

We present our results of the $K_{l3}$ form factors on the volume whose spatial extent is more than $L=$10 fm, with the physical pion and kaon masses using the stout-smearing clover $N_f = 2+1$ quark action and Iwasaki gauge action at $a^{-1}\approx2.3$ GeV. The $K_{l3}$ form factor at zero momentum transfer is obtained from fit based on the next-to-leading (NLO) formula in SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. We estimate systematic errors of the form factor, mainly coming from the finite lattice spacing effect. We also determine the value of $|V_{us}|$ by combining our result with the experiment and check the consistency with the standard model prediction. The result is compared with the previous lattice calculations.

Nucleon form factors and root-mean-square radii on a (10.8 fm$)^4$ lattice at the physical point

We present the nucleon form factors and root-mean-square (RMS) radii measured on a (10.8 fm$)^4$ lattice at the physical point. We compute the form factors at small momentum transfer region in $q^2\le 0.102$ GeV$^2$ with the standard plateau method choosing four source-sink separation times $t_{\rm sep}$ from 0.84 to 1.35 fm to examine the possible excited state contamination. We obtain the electric and magnetic form factors and their RMS radii for not only the isovector channel but also the proton and neutron ones without the disconnected diagram. We also obtain the axial-vector coupling and the axial radius from the axial-vector form factor. We find that these three form factors do not show large $t_{\rm sep}$ dependence in our lattice setup. On the other hand, the induced pseudoscalar and pseudoscalar form factors show the clear effects of the excited state contamination, which affect the generalized Goldberger-Treiman relation.

Two-pion scattering amplitude from Bethe-Salpeter wave function at the interaction boundary

We observe that the ratio of the on-shell scattering amplitude to the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) wave function outside the interaction range is almost independent of time in our quenched calculation of the $I=2$ two-pion scattering with almost zero momentum. In order to discuss the time independence, we present a relation between the two-pion scattering amplitude and the surface term of the BS wave function at the boundary. Using the relation under some assumptions, we show that the ratio is independent of time if the two-pion four-point function in early time is dominated by scattering states with almost zero momentum in addition to the ground state of the two-pion scattering.

S-parameter and vector decay constant in QCD with eight fundamental fermions

SU(3) gauge theory with eight massless fundamental fermions seems to be near the conformal boundary, and is a candidate theory of walking technicolor. Along the series of study by LatKMI collaboration using HISQ fermions, S-parameter and vector decay constant, which provide important constraints in the model of electroweak symmetry breaking, are calculated for this theory. Use of various volumes allows a systematic investigation of finite volume effects. A strong sensitivity of the S-parameter to the volume is found.

Topological observables in many-flavour QCD

SU(3) gauge theory with eight massless flavours is believed to be walking, while the corresponding twelve- and four-flavour appear IR-conformal and confining respectively. Looking at the simulations performed by the LatKMI collaboration of these theories, we use the topological susceptibility as an additional probe of the IR dynamics. By drawing a comparison with SU(3) pure gauge theory, we see a dynamical quenching effect emerge at larger number of flavours, which is suggestive of emerging near-conformal and conformal behaviour.

Walking and conformal dynamics in many-flavor QCD

In the search for a realistic walking technicolor model, QCD with many flavors is an attractive candidate. From the series of studies by the LatKMI collaboration, we present updated results of the scaling properties of various hadron spectra, including the (pseudo)scalar, vector, and baryon channels, for $N_f=8$ QCD analyzed with the HISQ action. By comparing these with $N_f=12$ QCD, which has properties consistent with conformality, possible signals of walking dynamics are discussed. We also present a preliminary result of the flavor-singlet pseudoscalar mass in many-flavor QCD.

Conformality in twelve-flavour QCD

The spectrum of twelve-flavor QCD has been studied in details by the LatKMI collaboration. In this proceeding we present our updated results for the spectrum obtained with the HISQ action at two lattice spacings, several volumes and fermion masses. In particular, we emphasize the existence of a flavor-singlet scalar state parametrically light with respect to the rest of the spectrum, first reported in our paper. This feature is expected to be present for theories in the conformal window, but the lattice calculation of such a state is difficult and requires noise-reduction techniques together with large statistics, in order to evaluate disconnected diagrams. Being able to provide a robust observed connection between a light flavor-singlet scalar and (near-)conformality is an important step towards observing a light composite Higgs boson in walking technicolor theories on the lattice. We also show updated results for the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m$ obtained from various spectral quantities, including the string tension, under the assumption that the theory is inside the conformal window.

Hadronic Interactions

Understanding hadronic interactions is crucial for investigating the properties of unstable hadrons, since measuring physical quantities for unstable hadrons including the resonance mass and decay width requires simultaneous calculations of final scattering states. Recent studies of hadronic scatterings and decays are reviewed from this point of view. The nuceon-nucleon and multi-nucleon interactions are very important to understand the formation of nucleus from the first principle of QCD. These interactions have been studied mainly by two methods, due originally to Lüscher and to HALQCD. The results obtained from the two methods are compared in three channels, $I=2$ two-pion, H-dibaryon, and two-nucleon channels. So far the results from the two methods for the two-nucleon channels are different even at the level of the presence or absence of bound states. We then discuss possible uncertainties in each method. Recent results on the binding energy for helium nuclei are also reviewed.

Lattice study of the scalar and baryon spectra in many-flavor QCD

In the search for a composite Higgs boson in walking technicolor models, many flavor QCD, in particular with $N_f=8$, is an attractive candidate, and has been found to have a composite flavor-singlet scalar as light as the pion. Based on lattice simulations of this theory with the HISQ action, we will present our preliminary results on the scalar decay constant using the fermionic bilinear operator, and on the mass of the lightest baryon state which could be a dark matter candidate. Combining these two results, implications for dark matter direct detection are also discussed.

Light nuclei and nucleon form factors in $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD

We present our result of binding energy of light nuclei with the nuclear mass number less than or equal to four at the pion mass $m_π= 0.3$ GeV. The simulations are performed in $N_f=2+1$ QCD with Iwasaki gauge and a non-perturbative improved Wilson quark actions at the lattice spacing of $a = 0.09$ fm. We discuss the $m_π$ dependence of the binding energies by comparing with previous results. Furthermore, we show preliminary results for the axial charge and the Dirac radius obtained from the nucleon form factors at almost physical $m_π$.

Study of quark mass dependence of binding energy for light nuclei in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD

We investigate the formation of light nuclei with the nuclear mass number less than or equal to four in 2+1 flavor QCD using a non-perturbative improved Wilson quark and Iwasaki gauge actions. The quark mass is decreased from our previous work to the one corresponding to the pion mass of 0.30 GeV. In each multi-nucleon channel, the energy shift of the ground state relative to the assembly of free nucleons is calculated on two volumes, whose spatial extents are 4.3 fm and 5.8 fm. From the volume dependence of the energy shift, we distinguish a bound state of multi nucleons from an attractive scattering state. We find that all the ground states measured in this calculation are bound states. As in the previous studies at larger $m_π$, our result indicates that at $m_π= 0.30$ GeV the effective interaction between nucleons in the light nuclei is relatively stronger than the one in nature, since the results for the binding energies are larger than the experimental values and a bound state appears in the dineutron channel, which is not observed in experiment. Possible sources of systematic error in this calculation are discussed.

SU(3) gauge theory with four degenerate fundamental fermions on the lattice

As a part of the project studying large $N_f$ QCD, the LatKMI Collaboration has been investigating the SU(3) gauge theory with four fundamental fermions (four-flavor QCD). The main purpose of studying four-flavor QCD is to provide a qualitative comparison to $N_f= 8$, $12$, $16$ QCD; however, a quantitative comparison to real-world QCD is also interesting. To make such comparisons more meaningful, it is desirable to use the same kind of lattice action consistently, so that qualitative difference of different theories are less affected by artifacts of lattice discretization. Here, we adopt the highly-improved staggered quark action with the tree-level Symanzik gauge action (HISQ/tree), which is exactly the same as the setup for our simulations for $SU(3)$ gauge theories with $N_f=8$, $12$ and $16$ fundamental fermions~\cite{Aoki:2013xza, Aoki:2012eq, Aoki:2014oma}. In the next section, we show the fermion mass dependence of $F_π$, $\langle\barψψ\rangle$, $M_π$, $M_ρ$, $M_N$ and their chiral extrapolations. In section 3, preliminary results of the measurement of the mass of the flavor-singlet scalar bound state will be reported.

Commuting Quantum Circuits with Few Outputs are Unlikely to be Classically Simulatable

We study the classical simulatability of commuting quantum circuits with n input qubits and O(log n) output qubits, where a quantum circuit is classically simulatable if its output probability distribution can be sampled up to an exponentially small additive error in classical polynomial time. First, we show that there exists a commuting quantum circuit that is not classically simulatable unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to the third level. This is the first formal evidence that a commuting quantum circuit is not classically simulatable even when the number of output qubits is exponentially small. Then, we consider a generalized version of the circuit and clarify the condition under which it is classically simulatable. Lastly, we apply the argument for the above evidence to Clifford circuits in a similar setting and provide evidence that such a circuit augmented by a depth-1 non-Clifford layer is not classically simulatable. These results reveal subtle differences between quantum and classical computation.

Light composite scalar in eight-flavor QCD on the lattice

We present the first observation of a flavor-singlet scalar meson as light as the pion in $N_f=8$ QCD on the lattice, using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action. Such a light scalar meson can be regarded as a composite Higgs with mass 125 GeV. In accord with our previous lattice results showing that the theory exhibits walking behavior, the light scalar may be a technidilaton, a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson of the approximate scale symmetry in walking technicolor.

A light composite scalar in eight-flavor QCD on the lattice

In search for a composite Higgs boson (techni-dilaton) in the walking technicolor, we present our preliminary results on the first observation of a light flavor-singlet scalar in a candidate theory for the walking technicolor, the Nf=8 QCD, which was found in our previous paper to have spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking together with remnants of the conformality. Based on simulations with the HISQ-type action on several lattice sizes with various fermion masses, we find evidence of a flavor-singlet scalar meson with mass comparable to that of the Nambu-Goldstone pion in both the small fermion-mass region, where chiral perturbation theory works, and the intermediate fermion-mass region where the hyperscaling relation holds. We further discuss its chiral limit extrapolation in comparison with other states studied in our previous paper: the scalar has a mass much smaller than that of the vector meson, which is compared to the Nambu-Goldstone pion having a vanishing mass in that limit.

Gluonic observables and the scalar spectrum of twelve-flavour QCD

We measure glueball masses and the string tension in twelve-flavour QCD, aiming at comparing the emerging gluonic spectrum to the mesonic one. When approaching the critical surface at zero quark mass, the hierarchy of masses in the different sectors of the spectrum gives a new handle to determine the existence of an infrared fixed point. We describe the details of our gluonic measurements and the results obtained on a large number of gauge configurations generated with the HISQ action. In particular, we focus on the scalar glueball and its mixing with a flavour-singlet fermionic state, which is lighter than the pseudoscalar (would-be pion) state. The results are interesting in view of a light composite Higgs boson in walking technicolor theories.

Light composite scalar in twelve-flavor QCD on the lattice

Based on lattice simulations using highly improved staggered quarks for twelve-flavor QCD with several bare fermion masses, we observe a flavor-singlet scalar state lighter than the pion in the correlators of fermionic interpolating operators. The same state is also investigated using correlators of gluonic interpolating operators. Combined with our previous study, that showed twelve-flavor QCD to be consistent with being in the conformal window, we infer that the lightness of the scalar state is due to infrared conformality. This result shed some light on the possibility of a light composite Higgs boson ("technidilaton") in walking technicolor theories.

Multi-nucleon bound states in $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD

We report on our on-going effort to calculate the properties of light nuclei directly from quarks and gluons based on lattice QCD. After briefly introducing our motivations and aims, we describe our strategy of fixing the strange quark mass at its physical value and approaching the physical point for the up and down quark masses step by step from the region of heavy quark masses. A successful calculation for the pion mass of 0.51GeV is reviewed, and the status for a lighter pion mass of 0.30GeV is reported.

Walking signals in Nf=8 QCD on the lattice

We investigate chiral and conformal properties of the lattice QCD with eight flavors (Nf=8) through meson spectrum using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action. We also compare our results with those of Nf=12 and Nf=4 which we study on the same systematics. We find that the decay constant F_pi of the pseudoscalar meson "pion" is non-zero, with its mass M_pi consistent with zero, both in the chiral limit extrapolation of the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). We also measure other quantities which we find are in accord with the pi data results: The rho meson mass is consistent with non-zero in the chiral limit, and so is the chiral condensate, with its value neatly coinciding with that from the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation in the chiral limit. Thus our data for the Nf=8 QCD are consistent with the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. Remarkably enough, while the Nf=8 data near the chiral limit are well described by the ChPT, those for the relatively large fermion bare mass m_f away from the chiral limit actually exhibit a finite-size hyperscaling relation, suggesting a large anomalous dimension gamma_m ~ 1. This implies that there exists a remnant of the infrared conformality, and suggests that a typical technicolor ("one-family model") as modeled by the Nf=8 QCD can be a walking technicolor theory having an approximate scale invariance with large anomalous dimension gamma_m ~ 1.

Bound states of multi-nucleon channels in N_f=2+1 lattice QCD

We calculate the energies for multi-nucleon ground states with the nuclear mass number less than or equal to 4 in 2+1 flavor QCD at the lattice spacing of a = 0.09 fm employing a relatively heavy quark mass corresponding to m_pi = 0.51 GeV. We investigate the volume dependence of the energy shift of the ground state and the state of free nucleons to distinguish a bound state from attractive scattering states. From the investigation we conclude that ^4He, ^3He, deuteron and dineutron are bound at m_pi = 0.51 GeV. We compare their binding energies with those in our quenched studies and also with some recent investigations.

To distinguish a bound state from attractive scattering states, we investigate the volume dependence of the energy shift between the ground state and the state of free nucleons by changing the spatial extent of the lattice from 2.9 fm to 5.8 fm. Lattice study of conformality in twelve-flavor QCD

We study infrared conformality of the twelve-flavor QCD on the lattice. Utilizing the highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) type action which is useful to study the continuum physics, we analyze the lattice data of the mass and the decay constant of a pseudoscalar meson and the mass of a vector meson as well at several values of lattice spacing and fermion mass. Our result is consistent with the conformal hypothesis for the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m \sim 0.4-0.5$.

Low energy spectra in many flavor QCD with Nf=12 and 16

We present our result of the many-flavor QCD. Information of the phase structure of many-flavor SU(3) gauge theory is of great interest, since the gauge theories with the walking behavior near the infrared fixed point are candidates of new physics for the origin of the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. We study the SU(3) gauge theories with 12 and 16 fundamental fermions. Utilizing the HISQ type action which is useful to study the continuum physics, we analyze the lattice data of the mass and the decay constant of the pseudoscalar meson and the mass of the vector meson as well at several values of lattice spacing and fermion mass. The finite size scaling test in the conformal hypothesis is also performed. Our data is consistent with the conformal scenario for Nf=12. We obtain the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m \sim 0.4-0.5$. An update of $N_f=16$ study is also shown.

Many flavor QCD as exploration of the walking behavior with the approximate IR fixed point

We present the first report of the LatKMI collaboration on the the lattice QCD simulation performed at the KMI computer, "$φ$", for the cases of 4 flavors and 8 flavors, the latter being expected to be a candidate for the walking technicolor having an approximate scale invariance near the infrared fixed point. The simulation was carried out based on the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action. In this proceedings, we report preliminary results on the spectrum, analyzed through the chiral perturbation theory and the finite-size hyperscaling. We observe qualitatively different behavior of the 8-flavor case in contrast to the 4-flavor case which shows clear indication of the hadronic phase as in the usual QCD.

Many flavor QCD with N_f=12 and 16

Information of the phase structure of many flavor SU(3) gauge theory is of great interest for finding a theory which dynamically breaks the electro-weak symmetry. We study the SU(3) gauge theory with fermions for $N_f=12$ and 16 in fundamental representation. Both of them, through perturbation theory, reside in the conformal phase. We try to determine the phase of each theory non-perturbatively with lattice simulation and to find the characteristic behavior of the physical quantities in the phase. HISQ type staggered fermions are used to reduce the discretization error which could compromise the behavior of the physical quantity to determine the phase structure at non-zero lattice spacings. Spectral quantities such as bound state masses of meson channel and meson decay constants are investigated with careful finite volume analysis. Our data favor the conformal over chiral symmetry breaking scenario for both $N_f=12$ and 16.

Study of the conformal hyperscaling relation through the Schwinger-Dyson equation

We study corrections to the conformal hyperscaling relation in the conformal window of the large Nf QCD by using the ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation as a concrete dynamical model. From the analytical expression of the solution of the ladder SD equation, we identify the form of the leading mass correction to the hyperscaling relation. We find that the anomalous dimension, when identified through the hyperscaling relation neglecting these corrections, yields a value substantially lower than the one at the fixed point γ_m^* for large mass region. We further study finite-volume effects on the hyperscaling relation, based on the ladder SD equation in a finite space-time with the periodic boundary condition. We find that the finite-volume corrections on the hyperscaling relation are negligible compared with the mass correction. The anomalous dimension, when identified through the finite-size hyperscaling relation neglecting the mass corrections as is often done in the lattice analyses, yields almost the same value as that in the case of the infinite space-time neglecting the mass correction, i.e., a substantially lower value than γ_m^* for large mass. We also apply the finite-volume SD equation to the chiral-symmetry-breaking phase and find that when the theory is close to the critical point such that the dynamically generated mass is much smaller than the explicit breaking mass, the finite-size hyperscaling relation is still operative. We also suggest a concrete form of the modification of the finite-size hyperscaling relation by including the mass correction, which may be useful to analyze the lattice data.

The Infrared behavior of SU(3) Nf=12 gauge theory -about the existence of conformal fixed point-

Incorporated with twisted boundary condition, Polyakov loop correlators can give a definition of the renormalized coupling. We employ this scheme for the step scaling method (with step size s = 2) in the search of conformal fixed point of SU(3) gauge theory with 12 massless flavors. Staggered fermion and plaquette gauge action are used in the lattice simulation with six different lattice sizes, L/a = 20, 16, 12, 10, 8 and 6. For the largest lattice size, L/a = 20, we used a large number of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and accumulated 3,000,000 trajectories in total. We found that the step scaling function sigma (u) is consistent with u in the low-energy region. This means the existence of conformal fixed point. Some details of our analysis and simulations will also be presented.

A new scheme for the running coupling constant in gauge theories using Wilson loops

We propose a new renormalization scheme of the running coupling constant in general gauge theories using the Wilson loops. The renormalized coupling constant is obtained from the Creutz ratio in lattice simulations and the corresponding perturbative coefficient at the leading order. The latter can be calculated by adopting the zeta-function resummation techniques. We perform a benchmark test of our scheme in quenched QCD with the plaquette gauge action. The running of the coupling constant is determined by applying the step-scaling procedure. Using several methods to improve the statistical accuracy, we show that the running coupling constant can be determined in a wide range of energy scales with relatively small number of gauge configurations.

Nucleon isovector structure functions in (2+1)-flavor QCD with domain wall fermions

We report on numerical lattice QCD calculations of some of the low moments of the nucleon structure functions. The calculations are carried out with gauge configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations with (2+1)-flavors of dynamical domain wall fermions and the Iwasaki gauge action ($β= 2.13$). The inverse lattice spacing is $a^{-1} = 1.73$ GeV, and two spatial volumes of ((2.7{\rm fm})^3) and ((1.8 {\rm fm})^3) are used. The up and down quark masses are varied so the pion mass lies between 0.33 and 0.67 GeV while the strange mass is about 12 % heavier than the physical one. The structure function moments we present include fully non-perturbatively renormalized iso-vector quark momentum fraction, (< x >_{u-d}), helicity fraction, (< x >_{Δu - Δd}), and transversity, (< 1 >_{δu - δd}), as well as an unrenormalized twist-3 coefficient, (d_1). The ratio of the momentum to helicity fractions, (< x >_{u-d}/< x >_{Δu - Δd}), does not show dependence on the light quark mass and agrees well with the value obtained from experiment. Their respective absolute values, fully renormalized, show interesting trends toward their respective experimental values at the lightest quark mass. A prediction for the transversity, (0.7 < < 1 >_{δu -δd} < 1.1), in the (\bar{\rm MS}) scheme at 2 GeV is obtained. The twist-3 coefficient, (d_1), though yet to be renormalized, supports the perturbative Wandzura-Wilczek relation.

Search for the IR fixed point in the Twisted Polyakov Loop scheme (II)

We measure the renormalized coupling in the Twisted Polyakov loop scheme for SU(3) gauge theory coupled with $N_f=12$ fundamental fermions. To find the infrared fixed point of this theory, we focus on the step scaling function for the renormalized coupling. We take the continuum limit using the linear function of $(a/L)^2$ and a constant fit function. We find that there is a sizeable systematic error due to the choice of the continuum extrapolation function in the low energy region. We will give some directions to reduce the systematic errors.

Study of the scaling properties in SU(2) gauge theory with eight flavors

We present our preliminary study of the SU(2) gauge theory with 8 flavors of fermions in fundamental representation. This theory could be a candidate of the gauge theory with conformal fixed point. By using Wilson/Polyakov loop in a finite volume with twisted boundary conditions, we study the renormalization group flow of the gauge coupling constant. Our calculation gives consistent result with the perturbative prediction of the running coupling in the weak coupling region. We investigate a possible signal for conformal behavior in the strong coupling region.

Nucleon form factors with 2+1 flavor dynamical domain-wall fermions

We report our numerical lattice QCD calculations of the isovector nucleon form factors for the vector and axialvector currents: the vector, induced tensor, axialvector, and induced pseudoscalar form factors. The calculation is carried out with the gauge configurations generated with N_f=2+1 dynamical domain wall fermions and Iwasaki gauge actions at beta = 2.13, corresponding to a cutoff 1/a = 1.73 GeV, and a spatial volume of (2.7 fm)^3. The up and down quark masses are varied so the pion mass lies between 0.33 and 0.67 GeV while the strange quark mass is about 12% heavier than the physical one. We calculate the form factors in the range of momentum transfers, 0.2 < q^2 < 0.75 GeV^2. The vector and induced tensor form factors are well described by the conventional dipole forms and result in significant underestimation of the Dirac and Pauli mean-squared radii and the anomalous magnetic moment compared to the respective experimental values. We show that the axialvector form factor is significantly affected by the finite spatial volume of the lattice. In particular in the axial charge, g_A/g_V, the finite volume effect scales with a single dimensionless quantity, m_pi L, the product of the calculated pion mass and the spatial lattice extent. Our results indicate that for this quantity, m_pi L > 6 is required to ensure that finite volume effects are below 1%.

S-wave pi-K scattering length from lattice QCD

The $S$-wave $πK$ scattering lengths are calculated for both the isospin 1/2 and 3/2 channels in the lattice QCD by using the finite size formula. We perform the calculation with $N_f=2+1$ gauge configurations generated on $32^3 \times 64$ lattice using the Iwasaki gauge action and nonperturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson action at $1/a = 2.17$ GeV. The quark masses correspond to $m_π= 0.30 - 0.70$ GeV. For $I=1/2$, to separate the contamination from excited states, we construct a $2 \times 2$ matrix of the time correlation function and diagonalize it. Here, we adopt the two kinds of operators, $\bar{s}u$ and $πK$. It is found that the signs of the scattering lengths are in agreement with experiment, namely attraction in $I=1/2$ and repulsion in $I=3/2$. We investigate the quark-mass dependence of the scattering lengths and also discuss the limitation of chiral perturbation theory.

Search for the IR fixed point in the twisted Polyakov loop scheme

We present a non-perturbative study of the running coupling constant in the Twisted Polyakov Loop (TPL) scheme. We investigate how the systematic and statistical errors can be controlled {\it via} a feasibility study in SU(3) pure Yang-Mills theory. We show that our method reproduces the perturbative determination of the running coupling in the UV. In addition, our numerical result agrees with the theoretical prediction of this coupling constant in the IR. We also present our preliminary results for $N_f=12$ QCD, where an IR fixed point may be present.

A New Method of Calculating the Running Coupling Constant

We propose a new method to compute the running coupling constant of gauge theories on the lattice. We first give the definition of the running coupling in the new scheme using the Wilson loops in a finite volume, and explain how the running of the coupling constant is extracted from the measurement of the volume dependence. The perturbative calculation of the renormalization constant to define the scheme is also given at the leading order. As a benchmark test of the new scheme we apply the method the case of the quenched QCD. We show the preliminary result from our numerical simulations which are carried out with plaquette gauge action for various lattice sizes and bare lattice couplings. With techniques to improve the statistical accuracy, we show that we can determine the non-perturbative running of the coupling constant in a wide range of the energy scale with relatively small number of gauge configurations in our scheme. We compare our lattice data of the running coupling constant with perturbative renormalization group evolution at one- and two-loop order, and confirm the consistency between them at high energy.

Nucleon form factors and structure functions with N_f=2+1 dynamical domain wall fermions

We report isovector form factors and low moments of structure functions of nucleon in numerical lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) from the on-going calculations by the RIKEN-BNL-Columbia (RBC) and UKQCD Collaborations with (2+1) dynamical flavors of domain-wall fermion (DWF) quarks. We calculate the matrix elements with four light quark masses, corresponding to pion mass values of m_π= 330-670 MeV, while the dynamical strange mass is fixed at a value close to physical, on (2.7 fm)^3 spatial volume. We found that our axial charge, g_A, at the lightest mass exhibits a large deviation from the heavier mass results. This deviation seems to be a finite-size effect as the g_A value scales with a single parameter, m_πL, the product of pion mass and linear spatial lattice size. The scaling is also seen in earlier 2-flavor dynamical DWF and Wilson quark calculations. Without this lightest point, the three heavier mass results show only very mild mass dependence and linearly extrapolate to g_A=1.16(6). We determined the four form factors, the vector (Dirac), induced tensor (Pauli), axial vector and induced pseudoscalar, at a few finite momentum transfer values as well. At the physical pion mass the form-factors root mean square radii determined from the momentum-transfer dependence %of the form factors are 20-30% smaller than the corresonding experiments. The ratio of the isovector quark momentum to helicity fractions, < x>_{u-d}/< x>_{Δu - Δd} is in agreement with experiment without much mass dependence including the lightest point. We obtain an estimate, 0.81(2), by a constant fit. Although the individual momentum and helicity fractions are yet to be renormalized, they show encouraging trend toward experiment.

Bound state spectrum in the finite volume

The signature of bound state formation on the lattice is of particular interest in this talk. In the finite volume, where all states have discrete energies, it is rather hard to distinguish between a bound state and a scattering state if the bound state were close to threshold, i.e., like a "loosely bound state". To study bound states in the finite volume, we calculate the positronium spectroscopy in the Higgs phase of U(1) gauge dynamics, where the photon is massive and then massive photons give rise to the short-ranged interparticle force. We try to identify bound state formation on the basis of the Luscher's finite size method, which suggests specific volume dependences of the energy gap/shift from the threshold energy for either bound states or scattering states.
