Hyperbolicity and Specialness of Symmetric Powers

Inspired by the computation of the Kodaira dimension of symmetric powers Xm of a complex projective variety X of dimension n $\ge$ 2 by Arapura and Archava, we study their analytic and algebraic hyperbolic properties. First we show that Xm is special if and only if X is special (except when the core of X is a curve). Then we construct dense entire curves in (suf-ficiently hig) symmetric powers of K3 surfaces and product of curves. We also give a criterion based on the positivity of jet differentials bundles that implies pseudo-hyperbolicity of symmetric powers. As an application, we obtain the Kobayashi hyperbolicity of symmetric powers of generic projective hypersur-faces of sufficiently high degree. On the algebraic side, we give a criterion implying that subvarieties of codimension $\le$ n -- 2 of symmetric powers are of general type. This applies in particular to varieties with ample cotangent bundles. Finally, based on a metric approach we study symmetric powers of ball quotients.

Orbifold hyperbolicity

We define and study jet bundles in the geometric orbifold category. We show that the usual arguments from the compact and the logarithmic settings do not all extend to this more general framework. This is illustrated by simple examples of orbifold pairs of general type that do not admit any global jet differential, even if some of these examples satisfy the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture. This contrasts with an important result of Demailly (2010) proving that compact varieties of general type always admit jet differentials. We illustrate the usefulness of the study of orbifold jets by establishing the hyperbolicity of some orbifold surfaces, that cannot be derived from the current techniques in Nevanlinna's theory. We also conjecture that Demailly's theorem should hold for orbifold pairs with smooth boundary divisors under a certain natural multiplicity condition, and provide some evidence towards it.

Characteristic foliation on non-uniruled smooth divisors on hyperkaehler manifolds

We prove that the characteristic foliation $F$ on a non-singular divisor $D$ in an irreducible projective hyperkaehler manifold $X$ cannot be algebraic, unless the leaves of $F$ are rational curves or $X$ is a surface. More generally, we show that if $X$ is an arbitrary projective manifold carrying a holomorphic symplectic $2$-form, and $D$ and $F$ are as above, then $F$ can be algebraic with non-rational leaves only when, up to a finite étale cover, $X$ is the product of a symplectic projective manifold $Y$ with a symplectic surface and $D$ is the pull-back of a curve on this surface. When $D$ is of general type, the fact that $F$ cannot be algebraic unless $X$ is a surface was proved by Hwang and Viehweg. The main new ingredient for our results is the observation that the canonical bundle of the (apriori, orbifold; but the orbifold structure is actually trivial) base of the family of leaves must be torsion. This implies, in particular, the isotriviality of the family of leaves of $F$. We also make some remarks in the Kähler case and apply this to the Lagrangian conjecture in the last section.

Fundamental group and pluridifferentials on compact Kähler manifolds

A compact Kähler manifold is shown to be simply-connected if its `symmetric cotangent algebra' is trivial. Conjecturally, such a manifold should even be rationally connected. The relative version is also shown: a proper surjective connected holomorphic map between connected complex manifolds induces an isomorphism of fundamental groups if its smooth fibres are as above, and if the domain is Kähler.

Orbifold generic semi-positivity: an application to families of canonically polarized manifolds

In this article we establish a version of Y. Miyaoka generic semi-positivity theorem in the context of log-canonical orbifold pairs. As an application, we show that the canonical bundle associated to a lc pair is big as soon as there exists a generically injective morphism from an ample line bundle to some symmetric power of the cotangent bundle associated to the orbifold pair.

Compact Kähler 3-manifolds without non-trivial subvarieties

We prove that any compact Kähler 3-dimensional manifold which has no non-trivial complex subvarieties is a torus. This is a very special case of a general conjecture on the structure of 'simple manifolds', central in the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler manifolds. The proof follows from the Brunella pseudo-effectivity theorem, combined with fundamental results of Siu and of the second author on the Lelong numbers of closed positive (1,1)-currents, and with a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudo-effective line bundles, due to Takegoshi and Demailly-Peternell-Schneider. In a similar vein, we show that a normal compact and Kähler 3-dimensional analytic space with terminal singularities and nef canonical bundle is a cyclic quotient of a simple non-projective torus if it carries no effective divisor. This is a crucial step to complete the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler 3-folds

Quelques propriétés de stabilité des variétés spéciales

We show that the general fibres of the Albanese morphism of a projective special manifold are special as well (a question raised by the first-named author). The main ingredient of the proof is a version (established by Birkar and Chen) with boundary of the famous conjecture of Iitaka on the subadditivity of the Kodaira dimension in an algebraic fibre space. Some consequences of our main result are discussed.

Metrics with cone singularities along normal crossing divisors and holomorphic tensor fields

We prove the existence of non-positively curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities along a given simple normal crossing divisor on a compact Kähler manifold, under a technical condition on the cone angles, and we also discuss the case of positively-curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities. As an application we extend to this setting classical results of Lichnerowicz and Kobayashi on the parallelism and vanishing of appropriate holomorphic tensor fields.

On families of lagrangian tori on hyperkaehler manifolds

This is a note on Beauville's problem (solved by Greb, Lehn and Rollenske in the non-algebraic case and by Hwang and Weiss in general) whether a lagrangian torus on an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold is a fiber of a lagrangian fibration. We provide a different, very short solution in the non-algebraic case and make some observations suggesting a different approach in the algebraic case.

On h-principle and specialness for complex projective manifolds

We show that a complex projective manifold X which satisfies the Gromov's h-principle is `special', and raise some questions about the reverse implication, the extension to the quasi-K\" ahler case, and the relationships of these properties to the `Oka' property. The guiding principle is that the existence of many Stein manifolds which have degenerate Kobayashi pseudometric gives strong obstructions to the complex hyperbolicity of X satisfying the h-principle.

Abelianity Conjecture for special threefolds

Using orbifold metrics of the appropriately signed Ricci curvature on orbifolds with negative or numerically trivial canonical bundle and the two-dimensional Log Minimal Model Program, we prove that the fundamental group of special compact Kähler threefolds is almost abelian. This property was conjectured in all dimensions in [Cam04b], and also for orbifolds in [Cam07], where the notion of specialness was introduced. We briefly recall below the definition, basic properties, and the role of special manifolds in classification theory.

Rational curves and ampleness properties of the tangent bundle of algebraic varieties

The purpose of this paper is to translate positivity properties of the tangent bundle (and the anti-canonical bundle) of an algebraic manifold into existence and movability properties of rational curves and to investigate the impact on the global geometry of the manifold $X$. Among the results we prove are these: \quad If $X$ is a projective manifold, and ${\cal E} \subset T_X$ is an ample locally free sheaf with $n-2\ge rk {\cal E}\ge n$, then $X \simeq \EP_n$. \quad Let $X$ be a projective manifold. If $X$ is rationally connected, then there exists a free $T_X$-ample family of (rational) curves. If $X$ admits a free $T_X$-ample family of curves, then $X$ is rationally generated.

The algebraic dimension of compact complex threefolds with vanishing second Betti number

We investigate compact complex manifolds of dimension three and second Betti number $b_2(X) = 0$. We are interested in the algebraic dimension $a(X)$, which is by definition the transcendence degree of the field of meromorphic functions over the field of complex numbers. The topological Euler characteristic $χ_{\mathrm{ top}}(X) $ equals the third Chern class $c_3(X)$ by a theorem of Hopf. Our main result is that, if $X$ is a compact 3-dimensional complex manifold with $b_2(X) = 0$ and $a(X) > 0$, then $c_3(X) = χ_{\rm top}(X) = 0$, that is, we either have $b_1(X) = 0, \ b_3(X) = 2$ or $b_1(X) = 1, \ b_3(X) = 0.$
